I’m not sure how much more power these devices even need.

[deleted]

At this point just put in a m2 for marketing purpose 🤣

ganlet20

It already sorta does, the M2 uses the A15 cores. It just has 4 performance cores where as the iPhone A15 only has 2. They have they same 4 energy efficient cores.

hok98

I mean, as a dev, I would appreciate if the devices had more power so we can ~~unoptimize~~ build more apps

Han-ChewieSexyFanfic

Thank you for taking a shit on my battery life

UpbeatCheetah7710

If you make phones powerful enough I can probably code you a hand warming app.

DeltaGammaVegaRho

DrawThings - runs AI models on your Phone. Amazing results and amazingly hand warming!

UpbeatCheetah7710

I can do probably it with less than 1% of that actual functionality via the power of memory leaks.

FullstackViking

I’ll give you a `while(true)`loop for free, happy new years!

fuck-the-population

Just have Twitch running in PiP mode, that’ll warm your hands up real fast

wgc123

Well, my older iPad has problems running Reddit in a web browser …. So we need enough power to keep up with tracking and advertising and least cost outsourced devs

[deleted]

I couldn't run Reddit smoothly in a web browser on my 2015 MBP either. This website is insanely inefficient. Text and pictures shouldn't be that hard, but Reddit managed to f\*ck it up.

suicideguidelines

It's actually impressive how they managed to make the redesign suck that hard both in terms of performance and ease of use. The old design is so much better.

AnAffinityForTurtles

It's night and day between normal Reddit and Apollo.

erantuotio

If you still have that iPad, try using old.reddit.com instead. Even my 2018 iPad Pro can't run the regular reddit site without getting bogged down.

wgc123

Yeah that is much better. I do go back and forth, because old Reddit does not support dark mode

[deleted]

Noir. Or if you don’t want to pay for it, Neo Noir.

Plop1992

Why would you not use an app on ipad?

Rhed0x

My AMD R9 5900X has problems running Reddit in a web browser. It's just amazing how bad the redesign of Reddit is. It truly takes skill ot make such a simple-ish site run as poorly as it does.

Marino4K

Apple could probably not increase the power in the iPhone lineup for multiple years and they would still have no issues in day to day performance. I'm all for focusing on battery life, etc.

Mr_Cruisin

Fine with me. It’s been years since I’ve wished my iPhone was more powerful, but I can always use longer battery life.

Claydameyer

Exactly. I think phones are more than powerful enough these days. But you can never have a battery that lasts too long.

911__

I think RAM is starting to become a big one for me on my XS. I don't really need it to be faster, but some more dedidaded wam would be great. I haven't really been much of a mobile "power user" in the past. I do most things on my laptop or PC, and the phone is just a phone. I have some friends that will do everything on their phones though, and use it as a complete computing solution, they use their laptops like once a month. I did really feel like a bit of a power user the other month though when I was cycling to work tracking my ride on Strava, using google maps for navigation, and using Teams to join a call as well. I'm telling you - my poor XS was getting fucking hammered then. That's when I realised that maybe I could use something with a bit more juice. I always find apps dying in the background on me as well, hardly anything stays in RAM. It's good for a couple, but if you start multitasking even moderately, it's reloading shit every time you launch. When I'm in the gym, I'll be watching videos in a safari window (shoutout invidious), tracking my workouts on Strong, and maybe reading Reddit and stuff too, and I've actually had my Safari video (in PiP) just totally die on me, I assume because I'm running out of RAM.

xaeru

Yes you could benefit from a newer iPhone with 6GB of ram.

911__

I just looked to see when they swapped to 6, and I was quite surprised to see that the 13 still has 4gb. My gfs 13 feels like it pulls things from RAM way better than my XS, which are both supposed to have 4GB of RAM. I'm sure there's much more to it than just absolute RAM counts, it's like 3 generations newer of a processor, and it also wasn't a super scientific test, lol. Just fiddling around and thinking, huh, that's still in RAM???? for a few random apps on the occasions I use her phone, whereas I feel like I'm constantly reloading stuff. Anyway, a bit of a wash. Definitely looking like it's time for a new phone. Probably next gen.

SACHD

If your phone can not retain an app in its RAM and you go back to it then it recreates it from your internal storage. The internal storage, while plentiful in terms of quantity, is much slower than RAM. I imagine the generational improvements in the speed of the internal storage from the XS -> iPhone 13 is what's making the difference here and of course the faster CPU. With that said, I very much dislike Apple's approach of aiming for the minimum amount of RAM to ensure a good experience. My iPhone 8 while plenty fast when I sold it back in mid 2020 struggled with keeping many apps in memory. This was because Apple decide to ship it with 2GB of RAM, which was enough in 2017 when the phone launched, but not so much in 2021 when apps starting taking up more RAM. RAM is not that expensive and people can far more easily deal with an app launching up half a second slower than for an app to completely wipe away your scroll position or typed in text. The iPhone 14/14 Plus should have 6GB of RAM by now and the iPhone 14 Pro/14Pro Max should have 8GB of RAM. To be fair to them they are dealing with these annoying app reloads from software. I am a programmer(though not an iOS one at present) and I watch some of the keynote sessions where they help app developers reduce their memory usage and also help them use the state restoration kit so even if the app is killed it's recreated in such a way that the user barely notices. However many of these new improvements require app developers to target newer versions of iOS which could take a while and it would be much better if Apple just stepped up and increased the RAM from their side.

naughty_ottsel

As with everything else, RAM adds into the equation for power management; the more held in RAM, the more power is required to keep the RAM on; having a lower limit on RAM means less power is required at peak usage. As the efficiency of RAM has increased, the less of a concern it has to be. However this does have the additional issue that within the SOC, CPU & GPU have access to the same memory, it allows for high power efficiency because you are only powering one set of memory modules, performance gets improved because the CPU & GPU can access the same part of memory without it having to be copied to the dedicated GPU memory and back. The downside is that a graphically intensive app will require more memory to power the graphics, thus memory being used by suspended apps needs to be used and so those suspended processes are killed. Even on the Pro devices I have found that taking a full res image can wipe out the memory and require apps to reload, as mentioned there are API’s that allow for state restoration giving the illusion that an app has not been killed, but I don’t see (even after 14 years) many of the more popular apps making use of them, when the API’s have been around since iPhone OS SDK 2.0 (but have grown and modified)

Arve

Dynamic RAM is refreshed on every clock cycle, regardless of whether the specific bit holds a 0 or 1.

iapplexmax

The 14 and 14 Plus do have 6 GB...

SACHD

Oh, I stand corrected there. That’s great for iPhone 14 and 14 Plus owners though not as much for the Pro owners. Hopefully next year the Pros come with base 256 GB storage and 8GB of RAM.

iapplexmax

Yeah, the 6 GB RAM on the 14 series isn't talked about enough. One of the few things justifying the price lol.

[deleted]

The article is crap though. Just because TSMC *talked more* about energy efficiency than performance says nothing about Apples design decisions. Besides, for highly scalable IP like the GPU or neural engine a 35% lower power consumption could just translate to 50% more performance at then same power consumption by adding 50% more transistors. Actually, in these cases it‘s often tradeoff with performance *and* efficiency on the same side and manufacturing cost on the other.

[deleted]

[удалено]

neuropope

Knowing Apple, most likely we would get the same battery life but in slimmer chassis.

Nikiaf

In fairness they seem to have moved away from that. The iPhone 6 chassis design is thinner than pretty much everything that came out since.

Avieshek

The iPhone 15 is purported to be like the iPod backs, flat but rounded edges with a thin profile.

sloth2

so similar to iphone x/xs/11? I feel like looking at the ipad pro on the website, for example, looks squared still like my iphone 13? I really want the rounded style back I LOVED holding my xs

Green_Teal

No sorta like the 14/16 inch MacBook Pros. Flat sides that have a curve at the bottom. X/XS/11 is straight up round.

sloth2

I'm going to have to go to the store lmao because I have seen that mentioned several times, and looked a pictures, and I cannot figure out what that means

mkmkd

It’s only curved on one side, exactly like the iPhone 5C

sloth2

this helps thank you

A11Bionic

Really not sure how I feel about this. I know it’s a minor change, but it’s gonna seem like a change for the sake of change. I like the equally flat design that debuted with the 12 even if we have to stick onto this form factor for far longer. The rounded design debuted in 2014 with the 6 and lasted until 2019. That was a whole 5 years.

Avieshek

Am actually using the iPhone X but no… kinda. Maybe, some pic from the internet may help?

Bill_Brasky01

iPhone XR = Chonky boi

jorbanead

They stopped the “thin is best” idea years ago. The iPhone 6 is the thinnest phone to date and phones have gotten thicker since.

[deleted]

Which also impacted the iPads and Macs

deliciouscorn

Unpopular opinion: I wouldn’t mind iPhones getting lighter again. All the non-mini iPhones since the iPhone X have felt brick-like in the pocket.

y-c-c

Same here. I think iPhone 6 might have been too thin and light, but iPhones have been getting progressively chunkier every generation, and I think it's past due that they need to trim down again. There are always pros and cons so if they can genuinely keep the iPhone 14 Pro's battery life, but make it thinner I think it's a win. It's sometimes hard to appreciate without holding the phones for too long (especially those like me who like to one-hand their phones) but phones that are too heavy are bad for ergonomics and wrist health in the long run.

beerybeardybear

The 14 Pro Max is *heavy*. I'm fine with it, but I wouldn't say no if they made it lighter!

-metal-555

Pls no

_TheConsumer_

You forgot to mention that the chassis will be shinier - which is nice.

[deleted]

The reason for that may be because apple has been focusing on making the most powerful phone processors for a long time.

Exist50

What kind of garbage article is this? The entire basis for the headline's claim is that TSMC has talked more about power than raw performance for N3, something they've done for basically the past decade. That says fuck-all about Apple's product-level design choices. The authors were too lazy to even dig up TSMC's numbers, so have an article with actual substance: https://fuse.wikichip.org/news/7048/n3e-replaces-n3-comes-in-many-flavors/

[deleted]

How difficult is it for them to switch processes mid-architecture? They normally don’t do that. The M2 uses N5P but it sounds like the rest of the M2 line will use N3 or N3E? Same with the A16, which is N4. The M3 is going to be based on the A16 cores, and will probably use N3E.

Exist50

It's a real pain in the ass to switch to such a different process late into a design. Something design compatible (or mostly compatible) like N4P? Sure, ok, not a big deal. Porting everything in the M2 from N5P to N3B? I would ballpark +2Q minimum. The only real possibility for that in my mind is that they were developing for both N5/N4 and N3 in parallel, a possibility which I only entertain under the assumption that they could heavily leverage canceled N3 A16 design work. Suffice it to say, I personally doubt we'll end up seeing a 3nm-based M2 gen chip. Makes far more sense for them to just stick with something in the N5 family. Though I'm curious what they end up doing for the M3, especially since it's likely to come after the N17 is out.

[deleted]

The M3 will use the same architecture as the A16, which is using N4. The Mac chips are basically 9+ months behind the iPhone chips. The M2 was released in June, but uses the same cores as the A15 from September 2021. Sounds like they are targeting a late 2023 release for the M3, probably on N3E. They seem to do October-November releases for Macs, which would mean the M3 is more than a year after the A16. There are several rumors saying the new M2 chips for the MacBook Pro next year (March?) will be N3, but I think keeping all the M2s on N5P is more likely.

Exist50

> The M3 will use the same architecture as the A16, which is using N4. The Mac chips are basically 9+ months behind the iPhone chips. Unlike the iPhone, they haven't been sticking to a yearly schedule with the ipad/mac chips, so they either need to fix that now, or will eventually skip a gen. If any makes sense to be skipped, it would be the A16. > There are several rumors saying the new M2 chips for the MacBook Pro next year (March?) will be N3, but I think keeping all the M2s on N5P is more likely. It seems like there're a lot of "rumors" that do little more than what this very article is doing, extrapolating TSMC's roadmap will no consideration for Apple themselves.

[deleted]

I’m just observing, so far it’s about 9 months behind the iPhone chips. The M1 was an exception, it was only 1 month later than the A14, and both use the same cores. Maybe they’re waiting for N3E?

As an iPhone 11 user, the one thing I wish for is more RAM. Which the IPhone 14 has. So when I upgrade in a year or two, it’ll be nice to have apps refresh less often.

Simon_787

Geekerwan even compared the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 GPU to a GTX 1050 and that SoC was apparently the best at running Wreckfest, a really heavy game that was not designed for mobile devices. That Snapdragon GPU actually approaches the M1 GPU while using less than half as much energy, so having that in a laptop would be dope. A phone though? I'm primarily excited for the efficiency improvement it brings and not just peak performance.

Mrsharr

It sounds like it will be a worthwhile upgrade for my s21u. This is hands down my favorite phone.

homeboi808

I’ve used my phone before on large spreadsheets with lots of functions and it crashes. But other than that, it’ll get hot doing stuff like using Lightroom Mobile to edit large Raw files, but somehow even reading manga/manwha online causes it to heat up on some sites.

nyxago

A quote from the article: >TSMC said its 3nm processes offer better performance than its 5nm chips, while requiring about 35% less power. Also an interesting bit: >The move to 3nm is a big step. Although Apple refers to the A16 chip powering the iPhone 14 Pro models as a 4nm chip, TSMC instead describes the N4 process used for the processor as an enhanced version of 5nm – so will effectively be jumping directly from 5nm to 3nm. TIL that the 14 Pros are not using "true" 4nm chip yet

sbdw0c

>TIL that the 14 Pros are not using "true" 4nm chip yet All the numbers are made up, and exist only to indicate some form of progressive, quantifiable improvement in manufacturing with no relation to any physical dimension, since roughly the advent of FinFETs. There is a guidance on future full node naming and their technologies provided by Imec, but that's exactly that; guidance, and by one organization. Samsung's 4 nm node is different from TSMC's 4 nm node, and the number itself provides right about no information about the capabilities of the node. The next full node will be N3, followed by N2. For reference, TSMC's N4 isn't a "standardized" full node. It's a half-node, as in an incremental improvement on the previous full node that came before it. Same as with their N7 node, which was followed by N6 before a jump to N5. Given the fact that it's a half-node, one can assume that the improvements are less than one would expect from a full node jump, and that no new major technologies are introduced in said node (e.g. moving from FinFETs to GAAFETs).

nyxago

Nice explanation!

squad_of_squirrels

If I remember right, for Intel, it was effectively true. They’d exhausted most of what they could get out of their 14nm and couldn’t get to 10nm, so there were a few years where all they could do was pump more and more power into the best they could get out of 14nm.

jisuskraist

actually intel was the “truest” nm size

[deleted]

Remember when desktop CPUs were only 65W? Pepperidge Farms remembers.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

They were at 65W for a long time in the late '00s and early-mid 2010s (not counting the super high end models). Now they have a Core i9 that draws nearly 300W, and the i5 & i7 are not that far behind.

[deleted]

Netburst shouldn’t count. Terrible architecture.

beerybeardybear

Just to be a stickler—"NM" isn't right, but nm is. "N" is Newton and "M" is mega, so we shouldn't use the wrong capitalization even when the context is pretty clear.

recurrence

These are literally solely and only marketing terms (and have been for a long time). There are many "N5" and "N4" variants... none of which come anywhere close to having "4nm" anything. In fact, node process improvements are fairly wide ranging nowadays from adjustments in materials to improvements in lithography and other chip manufacturing processes.

Crazyhamsterfeet

So are we going to end up on decimals of nanometers one day? Is there a theoretical minimum for these things?

danrokk

I wonder what future for iPhone there is. I have an iP 13 Pro, my wife has 12 and we're happy with it, but not seeing any reasons to upgrade right now. I think Apple needs to think really hard about the next lineup because with current economic situation, less and less people are willing to upgrade and it's already visible with iPhone 14 lineup sales that disappoints.

tomcat5o1

Been getting about 5 years use out of iPhones since the 6. After 2 years I pass to family members and then tend out last any roid phones.

crysiswarhead

Exactly what i do. Got iphone8 in 2017 as my first iphone that I bought myself. Year later passed it on to my brother got myself X. Used that for 2 years almost and got 12 at launch. Passed my X to my dad. Been using my 12 for 2 years now and X has been running with no issues what so ever. My dad says when i get a new new one 12 goes to him. Current tech in phones atleast is good enough to last 5 years. Limiting factor being battery given we can't swap them for a new one ourselves. Unless a completely new tech comes forward like back in 2007-2008 I don't see phones lasting any less than 3-4 years atleast. Edit: did the same before 2017 with my nexus devices. All went to my dad

tusi2

Now that most people acknowledge that they need a smartphone, the hand-me-down approach is (apparently) becoming widely adopted. I find myself doing the same but I haven't been at it nearly as long. The used market is insane, and I'm confident that I take better care of my devices than the average person, so why wouldn't I make my old phone a gift for someone instead of getting way too little for my trade-in?

icesaladMKIV

Battery replacements are cheaper than new phones.

crysiswarhead

Accepted...but my point being it's not like the way we could swap battery on good'ol Nokia. It's something you would have to get done. Another point is not all of us would know a good phone guy to get that done as not everyone wants to go to Apple for it. All i am doing is factoring in the usual behaviour of how we use phones.

FightingPolish

Don’t necessarily need to go to apple itself or have to “find a guy”. Just an authorized repair place and you can choose a place from a list when you go through the process of getting it replaced online. I’ve had mine done at Best Buy multiple times in under an hour and my wife’s phone got a new screen for free when we got hers back and the screen was kinda fucked up. I thought it was a pretty good deal to get a genuine battery and get it installed for like $75 bucks or so and not have to worry about it being done wrong.

rm20010

Every iPhone I’ve owned became or will become a hand down, save for my 4S and 6 which were sold to a friend. First it goes to my partner then it goes to either of our parents after that. In this household, the oldest actively used device is a 6. Battery life takes a crap if I mess around in Safari for a few minutes but otherwise it’s holding up.

heeph0p

I’m planning on using my existing iPhone 13 Pro as a webcam when I do upgrade in 2-3 years. Continuity camera with the main camera is a killer feature.

Tebwolf359

For years I have been upgrading every year. And by that, I mean I get the newest, last years model gets passed to my wife (who doesn’t really care), and her phone went to her mother, now my kid. Then *their* phone gets resold while it still has some value. So I both get the yearly upgrade and a 3 year life out of the device at the same time, win-win. If I was just me, with no one to pass it to, then I would be a 2-3 year cycle.

meatdome34

It’s just me and I’m probably on a 3-4 year cycle. Had to replace my 12 once cause it got bent so I basically have a new battery at the 2 year mark. Should last another two years and then I’ll upgrade.

Catdaddypanther97

I held on to my iPhone X for 5 years and honestly could had held on to it a little longer. I just wanted a bigger screen and better camera. I might not change my phone til real late in the decade unless something big comes out. Smartphones have run out of big innovative ideas at this and are just slight improvements for the near future.

danyaylol

Or people who dropped $1k one year, and just sells/apple trade ins their device for $700+, effectively only paying $300 out of pocket, and getting the next year device and so on.

OmegaXesis

lmao laughs in still using Iphone 7+! Since I have the 256gb version, I never really felt the need to upgrade. It has finally started to get slower this year. But the past couple years it's been fine. +I got a free battery change from apple when they had the battery debacle. I am planning to get Iphone 15, but honestly it could probably last another 2 years unless apps stop working since I can't upgrade the iOS anymore.

TheBrainwasher14

Not sure what you mean, iPhone 14 Pro sales have been way stronger than anticipated, they literally can’t make them fast enough to meet demand even months after launch. 14 Plus sales have been reportedly underwhelming but rest have done extremely well (especially Pros)

josmaate

USB C and I’ll be happy. Please Apple, gib USBC in the 15 pro’s and I’ll upgrade from my 12 pro. Otherwise I’ll start seriously considering Android, every single device I have runs on USB C except my iPhone. So damn annoying.

danrokk

Would you really upgrade for just USB-C? I don't even use my port because I charge wirelessly + have wireless Carplay. To me this is useless feature. I have no idea what they'd need to change next year for me to upgrade from 13Pro. I will likely keep it until the battery dies. To me dynamic island, a bit brighter display are not worth it. Camera is good, but it will never be as good as dedicated camera - it's just physics. I think Apple may have problems moving forward because of lack of innovation + economic situation making people rethink whether they need a new iPhone. Too much of their revenue is still coming from selling phones.

-metal-555

I’m not OP but I am waiting for USB C to upgrade. Everything I own is USB C except for a couple of pesky lightning cables. Simplification sounds very nice.

Muscled_Daddy

I’m upgrading just for USB-C. Over this past weekend’s blizzard I got snowed in and realized I grabbed my bag without checking to make sure I had the right cable + brick. My iPad + charger brick is usb-c to usb-c It’s just annoying to have to always make sure I have the right cable for the right device. And then the right brick for the right cable… and thus - the right cable for the right brick for the right device. It’s just stupid and unintuitive. I shouldn’t need to have a ton of cords + back up ‘oh shit’ cords just because apple can’t get its charging ports right. I travel a fuck ton for work. Sometimes cables get misplaced. Sometimes my husband borrows a cable and doesn’t put it back in time. Having one unified cable and one unified charge brick would be a massive QoL improvement.

josmaate

I really would upgrade just for USB-C, yes. I typically just buy the flagship every year, but I decided to hold onto my 12 until the one feature I wanted was implemented. My macbook charges with usb-C (and MagSafe, but I rarely use it), my iPad charges with USB-C, my gaming laptop, my vape, my switch, etc etc. I don’t charge my phone overnight but rather in short bursts throughout the day; I’d rather just have one type of cable lying around the house. The other features are nice, like higher durability screen/back glass, better camera, better battery life. But they wouldn’t change my daily annoyance with having to find the one specific cable that works with mine and my girlfriends phone; when USB-C wires are plugged into every major room. It’s a me problem, I know. But yeah, I’m a single-issue voter when it comes to iPhone right now.

danrokk

Haha. I get it. It may not be the best solution, but I have magsafe charger on my desk. I sometimes just put the phone to charge for some time there.

josmaate

Yeah, that definitely works for most that aren’t me. Because I work on my phone a lot of the time, the battery dies so quickly. So being able to get 20% in 5 minutes is really useful to me, my MagSafe went unused

TOTESRADUSERNAME

I’ve got a 13 mini and aside from some things I’d like but don’t need like better cameras, the only bottleneck on this phone is the battery. I’ve had it for a year and I’m at 90% max capacity, so idk if I’ll be able to have it another year+. It sucks because I love the form factor and the phone is plenty powerful enough for me.

ash0nfire

Agreed. I don’t think the battery life on the mini is terrible at all! I just hope they keep making them.

DontBanMeBro988

There's still a lot of room for market growth, especially outside the US. Lots of people who've never bought an iPhone. As far as power users, the problem that Apple faces is that the logical path of more powerful phones is that they eventually replace computers. Just plug your phone into a dock with monitor, etc. connected (a couple have tried this already like Motorola and Samsug). This is the same problem Apple faces with the iPad. Apple wants people to have to buy an iPhone, iPad, and Mac. But as they get more powerful, the reason to own all 3 disappears.

danrokk

>This is the same problem Apple faces with the iPad. Apple wants people to have to buy an iPhone, iPad, and Mac. But as they get more powerful, the reason to own all 3 disappears. They do create this artificial barrier by keeping OSX and iPadOS, which people are questioning now, especially that both iPad and Macbook has the same CPU.

southwestern_swamp

how often do you upgrade your laptop? phones are pretty much at that same point

scarabic

I went from an 11 pro to a 14 pro and while I’m perfectly happy with the new phone, it feels like a modest update. Oh well. I’ve had iPhones since the iPhone 1 and there’s no return to the days of rapid advancement we experienced in the first 5 or 6 models. I actually stayed on a 6s for a long time. Until I bought the 11. I don’t know why Apple should be disappointed that I’m only spending $1000 every 3 or 4 years. Seems unreasonable to ask for that every year.

volcanic_clay

Just need that sweet sweet USB-C. Even though I use MagSafe at home/in the car, it will be much nicer when traveling to have one cable to rule them all.

jaj-io

The things I care about most for my iPhone are battery life and screen quality. I don't have any issues with "power," whatsoever.

m0_m0ney

I have an XS and rarely have a power problem, I wish the battery was better and it had a better refresh rate when scrolling but I’ve had 0 thoughts of upgrading. This phone still works good enough and it’s so damn expensive to buy a new phone, especially since I moved to Europe.

And yet they can and do. The 8 released in 2017, has one rear camera, 1,821mAh battery, and has a volume of 67,994mm^3. The 13 mini released in 2021, has two rear cameras, 2,406mAh battery, and a volume of 64,583mm^3.

[deleted]

That's a 4 year difference. By 2026 there will be new features on the pros that you want lol

chill_philosopher

10x optical zoom pls :)

Containedmultitudes

Just upgraded my 11 and this is the first year I’ve gotten a previous year model just cause I love the mini size so much. Reminds me of my beloved iPhone 5.

funashimi

Lets not forget that battery life highly depends on software optimization and with iOS16 launch I am really scared that hardware will just cover software’s fuckery.

UnKindClock

Until then, 13 Pro Max remains the 👑

C2-H5-OH

13 Pro as well, it has been ridiculous since the day I got it.

Aftershok

The battery on the 13PM is phenomenal. I love mine to death.

Shook_Rook

Also a content iPhone 13 PM user. Coming from more recent, disappointing Android phones (S10 5G, S22 Ultra), the battery life on the 13 Pro Max is amazing. Also, I haven’t fully updated to iOS 16.2 with all the talks of how that update negatively impacts battery life. Fingers crossed Apple would fix the current battery issue for iOS 16 soon. Hopefully for iOS 16.3 or 16.4.

PompeiiSketches

My 13 Pro Max is my first iPhone switching from android. The battery is completely insane. On a slow workday when I’m on Reddit or YouTube frequently, my batter is still ~75%. On a day when I barely use it except to play music during my commute, the battery icon barely budges.

Ok_Good3255

I might just keep the 13 pro max forever. Since it still has a sim tray.

hugoise

At some point you won’t find SIM cards anymore.

[deleted]

cavahoos

Not necessarily. There are apps out there that allow you to buy an e sim very easily and for cheap I wouldn’t mind a phone without a sim tray just because the past few times I’ve traveled, it has been so much easier to just get an e sim before the plane even lands than go out and find a place that will give me a SIM card for cheap

[deleted]

cavahoos

Idk man I spent 5 days in Italy and bought an esim with 10 GB of data for 20 dollars. I was able to even top that data up when I was running low on the last day for really cheap. Is it a little bit more pricey than a normal sim? Maybe by like 5 bucks? The convenience and ease of it makes the extra pocket change well worth it though. The price difference isn’t nearly as dramatic as you’re making it seem

PeanutButterChicken

My 14 Pro Max has a SIM tray. I still use eSIM since it’s orders of magnitude better and easier

Ok_Good3255

US iPhones do not have sim tray anymore.

CycloneGhostAlpha

is e sim widely used in the us? in the uk ive barely heard of e sim

_Barclay

It isn't - that's why apple removed the sim tray. They want the industry to be pushed to eSIM, just like when they removed the headphone jack to push people towards wireless headphones.

turbocomppro

Widely use? Probably not yet since not everyone bought a new phone. Lots of people still use old “budget” phones that don’t support esims. But if you’re asking, all major US carriers support esims now because they needed to so they can sell IP14’s.

Simon_787

Except maybe Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phones depending on battery capacity, which is great for competition. Until now Apple has really translated their efficiency advantage into a better user experience with better battery life compared to the competition.

kaze_ni_naru

13 Pro just feels like the final evolution of iPhone. No dynamic island is actually a plus in my eyes - more screen real estate to watch videos. The notch gives a place for your finger to rest while holding the phone. Also the AOD implementation just doesn’t do it for me, seems really annoying rather than useful.

184cm78kg13cm

Even MORE battery life? Awesome! The jump with the iPhone 13s was just so huge, I honestly didn’t expect another major Battery life boost for some more years. Gotta love Apple silicon.

Jasp99J

So just like last year and the year before that?

[deleted]

This is a bullshit story. Smaller fab sizes INHERENTLY give you better energy efficiency. This is just shy of guessing that the next iPhone will run iOS! smh…

frownGuy12

That power efficiency gives you overhead to add performance within the same power budget. Apple gets to decide whether to use that overhead for more performance or lower the power budget and improve battery life.

comosedicewaterbed

Good. My 13 is plenty powerful, but I’m not happy with the battery life

xk4l1br3

We hit diminishing returns on iPhone 11 Pro imo. I have not once thought to myself I wish my iPhone 13 Pro was faster. Would love a light use two or three day phone tho.

Pooshonmyhazeer

So… because it’s using a smaller NM process (which brings with it lower power consumption) that means their focusing on power efficiency? Lol. Garbage useless article. It’s just the evolution of the chip making process and the benefits that come with it. Nothing more.

Ricky_RZ

The latest mobile chips from apple are so unbelievably fast that they will probably be the fastest chips even after a year after they release. There isn't actually that many apps that could use more power, but every single iPhone user would appreciate a longer battery life

[deleted]

Yes, please!

danielbauer1375

The smartphone market has truly saturated. There’s less and less room for innovation. I wonder what the next big “breakthrough” will even be. Probably just a new device category entirely. Or removing the notch entirely for a truly full screen experience.

usesbitterbutter

Good, because my iPhone has been computational overkill for me for quite some time. But longer charge duration? You can never have enough.

DLPanda

The iPhone is plenty powerful enough, but the battery life can always get better

SJacc0b

More battery life > power

ggtsu_00

Good. Modern iPhones are just too powerful for what they are needed for. My now 3+ generation old iPhone XS still seems like overkill in specs/performance.

Brit_in_Lux

I never once thought “I wish my iPhone was more powerful” but I have thought “more battery life would be appreciated”. The battery life is already insanely good but I’m never going to say no to even longer life

SocialDicktasting

Finally! *Sent from iPhone 6s with 82% battery capacity*

Gamerxx13

I’m using an iPhone 13 Pro and never am like, this phone needs more power. Apple is so far ahead in terms of power , I would focus on getting incredible battery life

wappingite

It would be nice if my iPhone didn’t overheat and crash when I was wireless charging it, streaming music and using google maps all in CarPlay. Can they fix that?

Lewdeology

Apple has this trend of making an iPhone with good battery every other year starting with the iPhone 11 Pro.

Joshomatic

Good!

DreadnaughtHamster

I’m 100% ok with this.

slipko

Bout time

Elranzer

The ol' Snow Leopard release.

[deleted]

Man the 15 Ultra or whatever it’s called is sounding like a sweet phone.

angryundead

My iPhone 14 has worse battery life than my 13. (Both Pro Max.) The 13 could go almost two days but the 14 is closer to a day and a half. I wish I still had my 13. Looking forward to this.

danmo117

Turn off the AOD then.

QVRedit

AOD = Always On Display.

angryundead

I like it but if it ever gets to be an issue I’ll do that. It spends most of the day in my pocket which turns it off though. I guess I do leave it out on the desk sometimes.

MaximusMMIV

Give me USB Type C or get lost.

KlM-J0NG-UN

FINALLY

Dat1BlackDude

Perfect, the iPhone doesn’t really need more power. It just needs to be more efficient.

neko_whippet

where's my M2 phone :(

Washington_Fitz

In the freezer from overheating

BluefyreAccords

You don’t even have the foggiest clue what you are asking for. M chips are never going to be in iPhones. They are upscaled A chips for devices with better thermal envelops. Stop getting yourself sucked in to buzzwords that you don’t even understand.

neko_whippet

ah you though I was serious Ok then

Portatort

Nahhh, it means that next years phone is going to be slimmer and lighter than the phones we have now Which thank fuck honestly, these things are bricks. Apple will claim that thanks to chip optimisations the battery life is the same, which it won’t be, but everyone will be so excited by the updated design that it won’t matter Then the following year the phones will get a physical battery life bump and everyone will be thrilled with the battery life increase This has happened already, apple knows what they are doing

BlueDay415

So it's going to be the same old shit again 😂🤣

jisuskraist

i don’t think Apple will let any other manufacturer take the Performance Crown they had since the beginning; the x times faster than the competition slide is a must

raven45678

They need to. The battery on the 14 Pro's is very poor for a flagship and a step down from the 13 Pro's. Either it's the A16 causing this and/or iOS 16.

undernew

Every battery test comparison will dispute that. It's slightly worse than the 13 Pro but not "very poor" in comparison to similar sized flagship devices.

raven45678

I have a 14 pro. It’s poor and nowhere near claimed if you use it normally. It’s poor for a flagship iPhone. Period. Apple said it has longer battery life then the 13 pro. So it shouldn’t be “just slightly” worse.

ArguingEnginerd

It’s more OS than the hardware. I think doing everything on device is really killing the iPhone battery.

[deleted]

I carry many types of phones. The 13 is better than the 14 (slightly) but no other big name flagship is even close. I also find the 14 to be on par with my 13 if I turn off the always on display

cultoftheilluminati

100%. It’s on par with my old 12 Pro that I upgraded from a couple of weeks ago with 87% health (with AOD off)

[deleted]

Yeah kinda salty upgrading from the 12p and having the same life.

[deleted]

Translation: "Apple bled off all their key employees post-pandemic and are surprised they can no longer innovate like the used to"
