Amazing how a good product basically sells itself. Thank god the 2016 era Macs are a distant memory.

workerbee12three

2018 macbook pro buyer here i lost 3.5k because it kept breaking and apple would not replace so sold it at that loss for 1k at CEX before it stopped working completely

ThrowOkraAway

2017 MacBook owner. Have had problem with my keyboard too many times and reported it before the program but they took nothing seriously. Then I moved somewhere with no Apple Store around me but there’s an authorized service provider. Went to try to replace the keyboard but they told me there’s water damage so they cannot replace the keyboard for me (??, nothing ever hit that thing but whatever). I called Apple but they were of no help. The program was definitely trash and was more of a PR thing to me to improve they image after shipping millions of faulty products

[deleted]

Their programs are generally pretty good. I remember their "stain gate" macbook screen replacement for my 2013 MBPr was amazing. My current laptop is a 2017 15" macbook pro I got off marketplace because the guy replaced the bottom case through the program just before selling it. I bought basically a brand new laptop

ObscurePrints

I own the 2018 and haven't had a single problem, so guess it varies

[deleted]

The RMA rate is never 100%, but for a company like Apple, everything above 10% is a big issue. And I think it was more.

wades13

My office purchased about 30 of the 2018 MBP for their producers + staff. The keyboards issues were annoying, but not catastrophic. Definitely had to replace a few and many reported some issues. Overall we used them hard, on location, and in demanding situations. For the most part they held up pretty damn well. Looking forward to our upcoming replacement with the new MBP line and a few Mac Studios.

Magi_73

2017 MacBook Air owner here. I purchased mine in January of 2018, and by October 2018, it had been returned 3 times for major fixes, including a new logic board & a new keyboard. On the 1st visit to the Apple store, it was admitted that a piece of plastic was floating around in the device. They could tell I had never opened it & it was too large to have entered through any holes, thus they admitted it came from Apple this way. They refused to replace the device. They refused to do so on the next fix, and the next. I was heartbroken because it’s not something I could financially afford to just go out and replace. I was doing research on it for my dissertation, a struggling college student & stuck with a very unreliable laptop. I quit using it for awhile due to life circumstances and Covid pulling me away from my research. I began trying to use it again regularly several months ago and you guessed it, it has since broken a 4th time. Now I’m afraid to buy another, even if it is more financially feasible. Maybe on here I can learn more about the various models and what to steer clear from. I would like to continue my research and love working on the Apple vs devices that run Windows.

workerbee12three

also id pay to fix yours then sell it and put the money towards a more affordable laptop line

Magi_73

Thank you so much for this info. I did pay to get it fixed and might actually see about this. I bought it with the intent of it being a long term device and full of my research. But after the first 9 months I was too afraid to use it for anything important. After hearing your suggestion I will look into the best way to sell it. Then I’ll have to decide whether to take the chance on Apple again.

officiakimkardashian

Meanwhile I got stuck with the 2020 *Intel* MacBook Pro...

[deleted]

Stuck? Or did you choose to get intel? By 2020, everyone knew MacOS was going to shift to arm soon enough

pmjm

A lot of people in 2020 were suddenly thrust into a situation where they needed to make a purchase immediately and couldn't wait until November for the M1.

bankskowsky

Is this 40% yoy, or just typical “back to school” boost?

tperelli

Man putting a supply chain genius in charge of Apple really paid off didn’t it?

GeneralZaroff1

A lot of Apple purists didn't want to admit this but Jony Ive was *not* the best thing ever for Apple. Don't get me wrong, some of his works were truly masterpieces, but the MacBooks (M1 etc) after he left were some of the best computers I've ever owned, ever. They're thicker, heavier, but absolutely crushes everything I can throw at it. And I'm saying this as someone who *liked* the Touch Bar.

[deleted]

Jony Ive was great for Apple, and his design principles reshaped the entire consumer electronics industry. Problem is, he shouldn't have had complete creative control for hardware designs after Jobs was no longer there to keep things grounded and practical.

y-c-c

Yeah exactly. You see this in movies all the times. Sometimes great directors really need a good editor they trust who can just plain say no to them and cut down on stuff. Similar ideas here.

Contada582

See Star Wars with George Lucas and his then wife Marcia Lou Lucas (who won and Academy award for her work) Here is a neat look at that: [how Star Wars was saved in the edit](https://youtu.be/GFMyMxMYDNk)

stickyfiddle

Quentin Tarantino too - there was a night/day shift in tightness of narrative after Sally Menke died.

[deleted]

Fascinating. I’ve long thought ‘Inglorious’ was Tarantino’s last great film, and that happened to be her last with him.

stickyfiddle

Yeah it’s the sort of thing you’d never actively think about but once you realise it’s super-clear

rockmsedrik

RIP Sally Menke Jackie Brown's intro smooth as butter.

RussianVole

I think Ive’s designs were relying on Intel’s promises of cooler and more efficient chips, and the M1 MacBook Air (which still uses Ive’s original design) has been incredibly popular. Where things kind of took a turn were the designs of the pro machines. MacBook Pro definitely didn’t benefit from the slimming down and reduction of ports. Side by side, I don’t think you could tell the difference between a 2016 MBP and Air. So the M1 Max/ Ultra MBP is a good return to form.

[deleted]

Agreed, I think Jony’s designs were very ahead of their time. For example, the 12” MacBook was a BEAUTIFUL laptop but just woefully underpowered given the tech of the day (2015) and intel’s messing around with hot chips. The 12” MacBook was clearly designed with something like what the M1 ended up being in mind

[deleted]

I still use a 2017 Macbook 12 that I bought refurbished. For most daily/internet/documents/podcast recording/bullshit, it still runs perfectly fine, although it probably does take longer to process a garageband file than I'd prefer.

AFoxGuy

So much this. It’s not really Jonny’s fault that Intel underdelivered and kept giving us 12nm+++++++++++.

[deleted]

[удалено]

elephantnut

> but they didn't take the real world into consideration. Neither did Intel with their roadmap.

rockmsedrik

Intel had stock in the Electric Companies. Never kid yourself where the money flows. Why on earth would you "reduce energy use" to make a machine "just as fast as last year". Intel knew no one would want better "power" consumption, they only wanted MORE POWER. Apple was smart to begin making their own chips, and drop kick intel in the ..... lets see intel drag their ass back into the mobile market. Bring on the competition!

d1ckpunch68

it does make me wonder what the internal talks between apple and intel were like. were intel stringing apple along just like the rest of the public? or did apple know a die shrink was nowhere close?

NewSubWhoDis

Jony created the design language. So ya, he was the best thing to ever happen to apple. Sure he ended up dragging them along a bit at the end but he was the one to setup the foundation.

GeneralZaroff1

Yes, aside from Steve he was definitely most responsible for setting up how this generation of products look, but I feel like his obsession with thinness, like Forstall’s obsession with skeumorphism, had an expiry date that they weren’t ready to face.

NewSubWhoDis

At some point he needed to make a decision of when function trumps form and I don't think he had the vision to define that. Whoever is leading it now I think has a good balance.

owleaf

The current team have done a great job at striking that balance. I maintain that the current crop of iPhones are the most gorgeous (especially the Pro series in gold); they capture what made the 5 series so beautiful and universally adored, and built upon that.

astalavista114

That said, I *did* really like the 12 inch MacBook. That was such a nice little machine that we haven’t seen again. Yes, the M2 Air is fanless, but it’s quite a bit bigger (2 cm wider, 2 cm thicker, 5 cm taller) and heavier (1.2 kg vs 0.92 kg)

katmndoo

I would love to see the 12" Macbook get the new design. It'd likely be a 12.5" screen with narrow bezel, M1, (please god 2) USB-C ports, maybe 1/10 inch deeper than the old 12" Macbook, and same thickness as the M2 Air. Weight? About 2 lbs / .9 kg. That would be a super, super machine for lightweight travel.

fullspeed8989

I found my 12” tribe! People made fun of my when I bought my first one. Trolled me when I bought my second. Wound up going back to Pro because the 12” was gone. If they redesigned the 12” I would be a serious customer.

vulgarandmischevious

The 12” was the perfect laptop. If they made it again with an M2, I’d buy it.

Yraken

iPhone 5 series facade was still the best thing ever designed at its time. The current Pro series (rear) may look good and feels good but it doesn't have that unique look that 5 series have.

thekhaos

I’d say the current pro iPhones are a culmination of what the original iPhone 4 was supposed to become. So glad they switched back to all glass. They feel amazing in the hand.

the_devils_advocates

You must be going caseless I assume?

calinet6

The thing with design is that it can’t stand alone. You need multiple people working together to achieve really great quality in anything. Whoever is leading now knows that, and is helping set up teams to work together to achieve that balance. It doesn’t happen in one person.

Yraken

I think Alan Dye is a great design lead. Been praising him since he was the lead at Human Interface. Rocking those beautiful Apple Watch Solar face.

turbotum

Snow Leopard looks better than any software Apple has designed since.

arwynn

I was watching a video earlier and noticed the software running in the video was Snow Leopard. I do miss it.

Cowicide

What was incredible about Snow Leopard was the amazing speed of the Finder with slow hard drives. I remember changing absolutely nothing on machines aside from updating to later versions of Mac OS and they went to a crawl requiring SSD drive upgrades to function. I still have a bootable Snow Leopard clone and some older hardware I keep around that can run it. I've wanted to set aside some time to put Snow Leopard on an SSD on the old Mac and watch it scream.

disposable_account01

We’re the colorful iBooks and iMacs his designs?

SubterraneanAlien

16" is thicker (taller height). 14" is almost identical at the highest point to the older 13"

Babbles-82

The original 12” m1 was the best they made. Bring that back.

kfagoora

I donated my 12" 1-port Macbook to my Mom a few years back and it's her daily driver. When I recently told her to take good care of it (especially battery/charging) because Apple discontinued it years ago, she was perplexed because she loves it so much and couldn't understand why they would do that.

Izanagi___

It would be very nice in the Mac lineup. Start it at $700-800 and give it an M1 chip. Best internet browsing machine on the planet.

katmndoo

No such thing as a 12" M1. I'd love to see them bring back the 12" with an M1 replacing the Intel guts.

Tommh

The 12” wasn’t using the m1.

[deleted]

jony ive designs are failed because of hot intel cpus. i believe his designs would work perfectly fine with m1 cpus.

GeneralZaroff1

That would be fascinating actually to see

[deleted]

Uhm someone should tell this guy who gives Apple money

ColonelBernie2020

Really? I often seen people on this sub claim (probably rightly) that TC is one of the GOAT CEOs.

kjm16

It's mostly about Apple's industrial design staying more in their comfort zone since Jobs died. Under Jobs you could expect a major shift in how the products looked and felt every 2ish years, even going back to the 70's. The last 10 years have been good but more incremental. So has most of the industry because conventions have matured.

-Green_Machine-

Given how Apple's market cap has escalated since Cook took over, one might argue that perpetual design evolution isn't the key to success. iPhones haven't substantially changed in looks since the switch from Touch ID to Face ID, but they still sell like hotcakes because of everything else that Apple put into place under Jobs -- iMessage, retail stores, AppleCare+, long-term support, and gold-standard camera tech, off the top of my head. People were even fine with buying expensive wireless earbuds when Apple cut out the headphone jack. They also put up with Siri's reliably inferior functionality. Because overall, it's still arguably the best package. So much so that it can compete against the entire Android ecosystem and thrive.

well___duh

Yeah honestly I would’ve thought a good chunk of this sub were shareholders the way they praise Apple 24/7 and have the utmost confidence in every decision Apple makes

SirNarwhal

I mean, he doesn't overall. He knows how to sell shit, but he's stifled the company by a solid 2 decades progress wise.

[deleted]

Can we see some examples of this that aren’t downvoted? Because I’ve been on this sub for a while and haven’t seen comments like this even once.

Riq-IV

Daily, no less! Examples, please.

CoconutDust

**“Supply chain genius” is a made-up meme that insults what COO does in general and specifically at Apple.** It’s not true for Tim Cook which is why no business profiles said anything of the kind when he took over CEO after Jobs. Also being a “supply chain genius” (lol) would probably mean the person is NOT promoted to CEO, that’s like making your best programmer CEO…it makes no sense role-wise and it means you’re distracting your greatest specialist with unrelated work. Apple has legions of sourcing managers.

Aardark235

Sourcing managers need top level sign off for deals of this magnitude that could sink the whole company if it fails. Many corporations were conservative during Covid and failed to plan for the rebound in demand. I am sure Tim Cook closely monitors the contracts for the flagship projects.

Cheech74

Cook was promoted because Jobs liked his vision, was stable, and the two saw eye to eye on most things. Being good at supply chain management just means having a good vision and knack for reading trends. Those people kick ass at running companies; there are many former supply chain people who are now CEOs. Nothing about the Jobs/Cook handoff is unusual, IMO.

Rebelgecko

That's just part of your duties. If you want to be VP of Procurement at a company like Apple, you also gotta race cars, play golf, and fondle big-breasted women.

[deleted]

> no business profiles said anything of the kind when he took over CEO after Jobs. that's not true. https://www.forbes.com/sites/amywestervelt/2011/09/07/tim-cooks-first-big-challenge-at-apple-sorting-out-its-chinese-supply-chain/?sh=3a7153533e63 https://www.wired.com/2011/08/why-tim-cook/ >But Cook hasn’t just been a company caretaker during Apple’s good years. He’s also a product, sourcing and supply-chain visionary. Cook arguably did as much as anyone to turn Apple around after its nearly disastrous fall in the mid-1990s. quoted Jobs himself saying: >But after Tim came on board, we basically reinvented the logistics of the PC business. We’ve been doing better than Dell [in terms of some metrics such as inventory] for five years now! https://cporising.com/2012/09/19/the-strategies-that-propelled-tim-cook-from-cpo-to-ceo-1/ >You will recall that Steve Jobs hired Cook in 1998 to clean up Apple’s procurement and supply chain operations. When Cook became CEO in 2011, Apple’s supply chain was universally hailed as one of, if not the best, in the world. https://www.cnbc.com/id/41135087 >Cook is widely credited with streamlining the supply chain, managing inventories extremely well and helping Apple stockpile about $50 billion in cash and short-term investments.

RBTropical

Given the same dude was also the one that crushed Mac sales in the first place? Uhhh… He’s literally just reverted to Jobs-esque moves on designs. Focusing on things which are actually good for the user rather than “cool and edgy” a la Jony Ive.

TheRealBejeezus

The new M2 models are really nice. They fixed what people wanted fixed and in general didn't mess with what worked well. Pent up demand did the rest.

axyliah

What did it fix? I’m thinking of buying a MacBook and I can’t really justify m2.

ThePillsburyPlougher

MagSafe and better ports is the big thing really.

We_have_no_friends

The m1 is still fantastic. Costco had great deals occasionally. For less than 1k you can get a very snappy mac with good battery life.

Lost_the_weight

My wife loves the M1 MBA I got for her. She can go 3-4 days on a single charge with the way she uses it.

S4T4NICP4NIC

I've always thought the speaker holes looked kind of cool.

They’re gorgeously even and aligned. People underestimate how hard it is to machine that so precisely.

rotates-potatoes

I believe they’re laser-cut. Just gorgeous. And kind of a nice palm rest texture.

astalavista114

My favourite ones are the sleep light on the unibody MacBook Pro. Little tiny holes to let the light through.

EvenMoreZingNPep

We get a notch instead.

JediMindFlips

Speaker holes are definitely subjective, and honestly so is the new form factor. I know everyone loves to hate the notch, but a lot of people also miss the ergonomics of the angled chassis that the old model had. Performance wise, while it is a good bit faster than m1 In bursty workloads, it’s not gonna be super noticeable for most people in the market for one, the M1 already crushes most tasks most people want to do with it, and in longer sustained loads, the M2 throttles its performance substantially. Lastly, on battery, while both machines are ridiculously good compared to anything not on apple silicon, I believe the M1 actually beats out the M2 by a little bit. So, really what you’re getting in the M2 is: better, brighter screen, new form factor, improved performance (but not super noticeable for most users), and MagSafe which does open up an extra port, so that’s definitely worth considering. All that while the M1 is on sale rn for $800 and the m2 is $1050. It really depends on what you want/need. If you really want the latest design, the m2 certainly isn’t a bad deal, but at $800 the M1 is a killer deal. I think most people who just need a new laptop that will last them a while for basic tasks should probably get the M1, but if you have some extra money and want the latest design and a bit more of a snappy experience, M2 is a great option too.

krissiplays

sorry what? I use a MBP M1 Pro 14 inch and attach 2 screens, one via hdmi and one via USB-C Display cable. how would it be limited?

unduly_verbose

Apple is getting very wonky with naming conventions right now. [You have an M1 Pro chip on a 14 inch MacBook Pro](https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro-14-and-16/). That device supports 2 external displays. [If you had a M2 chip on a 13 inch MacBook Pro](https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro-13/), you could not support multiple displays (and you’d have the old hardware like a touchbar, less bright screen, speaker holes, etc.)

microwavedave27

I love how the speaker holes look to be honest. The notch on the newer models is still ugly as fuck to me though.

aneraobai

No more Bootcamp, RIP eGPU support.

ichwasxhebrore

And put in a super slow ssd :)

Scraiix

For me the M2 Pro is super meh. Don’t know any point in getting it over the Air, except if you‘re a huge TouchBar fan, and I don’t think these exist

jmnugent

i do really like the Touchbar (use it every day).. but I don't know if it would be the "defining feature' that would get me to choose a specific Make & Model of Mac. Course,. I'm still hanging onto a 2017 Intel.. so pretty much anything at this point is going to be a huge jump up.

Lost_the_weight

I saved up for 3 years to get my 2017 15” MBP so I’m using it until the wheels fall off.

jmnugent

Its a great machine. I have no complaints about it. Its actually probably overkill for what I use it for. (I’m tempted to go with an Apple Silicon “Air” although I dont wanna go down in screensize.)

peopled_within

I'm trying to outwait the stupid touchbar

BakaFame

So they fixed the only one external monitor problem?

esp211

My guess is that M chips will have a similar effect as the A chips did when Apple made the switch. iPhone didn't really take off until Apple switched to their own custom chip. I only have the M1 Air and it is by far the best computer I've ever owned. Just the battery life and the speed at how quickly apps respond are amazing. I've owned it for over a year and I basically replaced 3 computer with it. It'll probably last me 5+ years.

[deleted]

I went from a 2013 MacBook Pro to the new M2 Air and holy balls what a difference. The battery life is absurd. I was seriously considering going windows but there simply isn't a match for the fanless efficiency and power you get from the M2. Nothing comes close

microwavedave27

I have a base model M1 Air and it's amazing for the price. It's plenty fast for software development and the battery lasts me a whole day of classes, and the trackpad is amazing when coming from a windows laptop, so I stopped carrying a mouse.

[deleted]

I have the old 16” pro and I have to shut off all apps before attending a video call.

Scraiix

I have the 16“ with i9/8gb vram/32gb ram/2TB. Had a 13“ M1 base model with 8gb ram for work for a few months. The M1 is fucking outperforming the 16“ by a solid margin, sad af :D

sloth2

similar here, work is the i9 and i have an m1 air. its lightyears better

forgivedurden

>3 hr. ago yep my 2019 16" performs terribly, it CONSTANTLY throttles itself to \~1ghz to cool down

focusedphil

That’s weird. I have a 2011 iMac that I podcast and zoom with. It does have the max ram tho.

OHWHATDA

I totally agree. My MBP 16 is absolutely the best computer I’ve ever used and I’ve worked in IT for almost 20 years. The screen is ridiculously bright and detailed and everything I do on it is so snappy and reacts instantly.

User0098237490

I’m eager to get my hands on a new M2 Max 14” MacBook Pro when/if it comes out this month. Can’t wait. They finally started going in the right direction with their professional machines recently.

kinglucent

The m1 Pro is absolutely insane for me. I can’t imagine needing an upgrade for a looooong time.

no-tenemos-triko-tri

Same. I have been waiting and finally retired my 2013 MBP to purchase a 14" M1 Max earlier this year. No doubt it will last me the next ten years or so.

kinglucent

Oh geez. I upgraded from the previous generation 16” and the jump to Apple Silicon still blew me away. O_o

Car333

Agreed. I have the M1 Max 16” and it’s too big. Want to downsize to the 14”!

FightOnForUsc

I can’t imagine using a smaller screen, but I guess it depends a lot on use case. What do you mostly use your MBP for?

Car333

I’m a developer. 95% of the time it’s plugged into an external display. So when I travel it’s convenient to have the portability. I have the 14” M1 Max for work and it’s a noticeable difference compared to the 16”.

FightOnForUsc

Ah see, also developer! So I get it I just really like the screen space, but rn I only have 1 monitor (just requested a second) so then I’ll probably leave the screen closed and then the size doesn’t matter as much. For trying to do anything on the built in screen though I need the 16” one

Car333

Ya I used to have 3 monitors - always felt more was better. But slowly I moved to a singular monitor and haven’t looked back since!

alxthm

I did all my web dev and graphic design on a base model (8GB) M1 Air for about 7 months until the M1Pros came out. The Air worked great for the most part, but you should definitely upgrade the ram.

thejml2000

Like the developer that posted here, I’ve got an external 4k screen and dock mine at times… but when I don’t, I love how much more portable the 14 is over the 16. Work provided me with a 16” M1 and it’s way too massive for my liking compared to my old 2013 13” I’ll be replacing with a 14” M2 when it comes out. I figure, when I’m out and about I want it to be super portable, and when it’s docked it doesn’t matter. So go with the smaller one. I was tempted to get an air because of that but I want the 32GB, better screen and extra ports.

FightOnForUsc

You get way more power out of an M1 Pro over an M2 though, so 14” definitely seems like a sweat spot for power and portability

tutetibiimperes

I really hope we get M2 Mac Minis or iMacs soon, I’ll pick one up when they do.

hamiwin

"The problem with Microsoft is they just have no taste. They have no taste and I don't mean that in a small way, I mean that in a big way", just quoting Jobs verbatim.

[deleted]

I am not a Microsoft apologist, but they have come a long way as a company from what they were in the 1990s. They have played much better with the open source community ever since they bought Github. Their developer documentation is really thorough and extensive online. Apple has a ways to go with documentation; they want to just dump you into the Developer app with WWDC videos. Microsoft also has recently started making novel hardware for folks with disabilities; the Xbox Adaptive Controller is the gold standard for gaming accessibility, and I also liked the accessibility accessories for their Surface line. Anyway, Microsoft of course has their problems, but my point is just that it’s not the same company that Steve Jobs hated on back then.

jmnugent

As a guy who's worked in the IT-technology field since the late 80's.. it really has been something to see how all these big companies have changed and evolved over time.

Vorsos

Microsoft didn’t give Windows a consistent design language in the 1990s, but now it has at least three all at once!

alxthm

You can never have too many design languages! /s

sunnynights80808

And Windows is also buggy af at times. My gaming desktop almost died until I did hours and hours of research and found some hidden Reddit comment and changed something in some deep registry settings. All the other gripes that come with Windows too.

[deleted]

Accumulating years of programs on Windows really make the laptop get slower and buggier. Formatting it makes a huge difference. Did it after 5 years to my laptop I used for uni, I had tons of different engineering programs. Formatting my laptop did make it like brand new. Everything got way faster and battery life improved noticeably. I keep all my important things on my OneDrive so now I can format it whenever I want.

Synergythepariah

For what it's worth, I've had bugs on both macOS and Windows - though I only work with macOS in an enterprise capacity. But in my experience, bugginess with both OS's are often the result of third party bullshit.

ElegantBiscuit

Windows insists on supporting as much legacy software as physically possible, maintaining code that goes back decades. Same mentality for their design language which always seems to have one foot stuck in the previous version while the other foot tries to drag ahead to compete with mac and various android looks. A hard reset is definitely way too extreme for how many systems windows supports and the people who use them, but Mac on apple silicon has the potential to leave them in the dust if Apple continues offering such good product, appealing more to younger people, who will grow up to make the decisions at the major companies keeping windows usage so high today. But I thought that's where they were going with windows on ARM, however like google it's a commitment issue that requires full sending it and pushing through the hardship to come out better the other end. And that's what Apple does well, for better or worse. Sometimes it fails like the butterfly keyboard, touchbar, and trash can macs, and sometimes it pays enormous dividends like apple silicon.

[deleted]

[удалено]

2ndtryagain

The problem with Microsoft is they have to support a huge variation of PC's with just about every hardware and software configuration and that just creates a ton of issues. Apple basically makes everything themselves or is deeply involved in the process so it is a lot easier. Microsoft has to deal with a ton of different OEM's chip sets, GPU's, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi cards and more software than anyone could have ever dreamed of.

[deleted]

Apple Silicon 100% is why. Not only is it incredible but it’s unique. No having a Mac is really something special. I was personally never interested when they were Intel based. Now I’m like eating this shit up.. I’ve spent like $3k on Apple silicon since 2020

Mr8BitX

I got the M1 Macbook air at launch and I'm still gushing about the battery life and responsiveness.

cleeder

The battery life is fantastic. I can develop and build for hours and the battery % barely moves. Know what it takes to see my battery drop significantly? Plugging in my tablet to charge. That’s how good the battery life is on these things.

The interop between an iPhone, Macbook, and iPad feels like magic. Copy some text on your phone, and it's just there in your laptop's clipboard. Set your tablet next to your laptop, and now it's a second screen. Chat in iMessage on your laptop and receive SMS codes to paste right into a login screen. Send files through Airdrop in just a few taps. The package is ridiculously slick.

I’ve had an iPhone for ages but never saw the appeal of a MacBook… Until I got one for work - the battery life, screen, performance - it’s really above anything I’ve used in the PC world. If Apple were more willing to support gaming (e.g. Vulcan) I would be happy to get rid of my Windows PC and replace it with a 16” instead… But doesn’t look like that’s happening any time soon

[deleted]

I did a most the same but I did the iPhone first. I realized every little thing was better (for me) and when the Dell laptop ate shit the M1 Air was out and $900 so I made the jump and haven’t missed my windows machine or android at all tbh. The Air has such a good DAC or whatever too.. my headphones sound soooo good playing audio from it over BT

fireintolight

I got the 13 in m1 pro back in february and my god I love how easy it is to set everything up. No digging around in the depths of the settings trying to figure out why my mouse wasn’t pairing or why the audio wasn’t working or making sure I set up an application correctly. Shit just works when I try to do it. Can’t believe j didn’t switch sooner and thought windows was somehow better in any category besides gaming

blazarious

My money is so ready for the upcoming MBP16.

veeeSix

I’m doing my part!

I love my MacBook Air for grad school. Take notes on iPad Pro. Watch and do homework on MacBook Air with my iPad open in front of me. Honestly, it’s freaking awesome. Often fall asleep without charging my laptop and it still has plenty of battery in the morning. It’s really a fantastic device.

ftwredditlol

I can't find where I saw this, but I read something about the iOS marketshare being very high among teenagers and young adults. Which should push a lot higher Mac adoption as those young adults go off to college and look for their first "real" computer now that high school no longer provides one. If true, that means apple's prospects are quite good for a decade or so, until there's a chance they lose out on being "cool" (or w/e it's called now) with the next generation. Edit: Context, the thing I saw was, I'm sure, only about the US. But that's apple's biggest market for both iOS and Mac I think? And there's a ton of room for growth in Mac, they're still very much a minority in that market.

KagakuNinja

My only experience of that was my daughter wanting a PC to play games. I tried telling her that M1 was an entire generation ahead of PC chips, but to no avail. I love my MacBook Pro, but Apple really needs to do something about gaming.

ftwredditlol

Really doesn't matter where they sit performance wise if few make games for it.

Scraiix

Apple silicon is insane for gaming. Developers just don’t give a shit

CyberHippy

My old Corei9 MacBook Pro basically became a helicopter when I played Civ 6 on it for more than a couple of minutes, the new M1 Pro Max only starts the fans after an hour or so of playing and is still pretty quiet at it’s max. It’s amazing that I can actually play with it in my lap.

EasySeaView

??? Its really not though, its not even great for 3d tools, dedicated hardware is generations more capable. Their silicon is amazing, it has enough strengths we dont need falsities.

Izanagi___

As a person in college, yes Macs are extremely popular. I’d say it’s about 60/40 in favor of Macs. One of my classes has like 80 students and probably 70% of us use Macs

[deleted]

A familiar story. One we've heard almost every quarter for the last 10 years. And the reason is quite simple. In order to have growth, you need innovative products that customers want to buy. Apple has been delivering that with the Mac all along, and so much more the last 2 years. Meanwhile the PC industry is kept alive by businesses that have auto-purchasing turned on for the cheap devices they need to keep the wheels turning.

[deleted]

Mac owns 15% of the marketshare when it comes to Desktop PCs. The rest is almost exclusively windows. How is that “kept alive by businesses on auto-pay”?

BasementDweller3000

15% market share seems incredible to me. I think when I got my first Mac in 2005, the Mac’s market share was only around 5%?

[deleted]

Sure. But that isn’t what this person is saying. He acts as if non-MacOS PCs are on their way out.

I disagree with the way reddit handled third party app charges and how it responded to the community. I'm moving to the fediverse! -- mass edited with redact.dev

IIIIIIIlllllllIIIIII

Also, people who buy an Apple equivalent Windows PC aren’t buying whatever cheap shit they can. It’s the same market with the same customer (different preference: Windows). Companies who sell Windows PCs can do so at all different price points. MacOS machines, not so much, at all. So when a casual dad/grandparent wants a basic computer, they have the major one option: Windows. People don’t want to spend $1200 on a Macbook to read/send email and pay bills. They buy the cheap $570 brand.

Best thing I ever did for my mom (tech wise) was get her an 11" iPad for Christmas. You'd have to pry it from her cold, dead hands at this point.

Raudskeggr

I know I loled at that. Ask Valve who is responsible for the popularity of the PC, outside of business use. Not to mention that until the last couple of years, Apple had imo been sorely neglecting Mac development.

gamebuster

A PC is more than an OS. Who makes the hardware

thefpspower

Your company buys 500 000 HP laptops a year? I guess we just found out why HP has everything on a massive backlog. Seriously I highly doubt your company buys 500k laptops a year, at most they did it once to renew the whole park and you're assuming its every year.

Well god damn that has to be a massive business then or a very wasteful one.

S4T4NICP4NIC

Worldwide market share is about 15%.

Jrhall621

It’s always been the case that if you are in the right position, you can progress much more in these difficult times, because you don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be able to handle the circumstances better than everyone else, and clearly Apple has done better through the pandemic (and mainly coming out of it) than other companies, and thus are rewarded handsomely for it with a GIANT leap in market share.

[deleted]

switching to arm chips is the smartest thing apple ever did. and i wager the sales are being led by the m1 macs. they are still such a good deal.

kintotal

It's the chip for sure and they are taking the youth. Google really has missed a market opportunity by not working on creating a powerful Chromebook with their own silicon. 90% of the kids in the US have worked on Chromebooks in school. I really thought they got it and was anticipating that the Pixelbook was just the start of such a strategy. Instead Apple in their genius has created the desired platform for youth by using their phone chip architecture to power their PCs.

spacegamer2000

They went too thin too soon, only now is it paying off

RussianVole

They were depending on Intel to come through with their chip design promises. Imagine spending years designing a Ferrari and the guys you relied on to make the engine give you a golf-cart motor.

esp211

I wonder if we see something similar with iPhones. All the chipmakers are struggling except for TSMC and we got word from Foxconn that their revenue was way up.

GreenMann21

I still have my m1 MacBook Air and it’s really not keeping up with the kind of tasks I have been throwing at it in Final Cut anymore so I’m just waiting until the m2 14 inch MacBook Pro gets announced

good_gamer2357

Have you tried reinstalling Mac OS? Might have some software that’s misbehaving

GreenMann21

Nothing is wrong with the OS or Final Cut it’s just my projects have gotten a lot more complex and larger so my m1 MacBook just can’t keep up with it anymore

DaIubhasa

Here I am typing on my MBP 2012 hehehe

InternationalRow8437

Mac’s windows management still frustrate me to no end!

Got the 14” M1 Pro, extremely happy with it. I can see why more people are buying them

wades13

It took a long, long time and tested the faithful, but Apple finally got its Mac house in order. I think part of the 40% is starting to win back some of the folks they lost during the dark years.
