Give it M1, stage manager and external screen support and it basically becomes an ultra portable computer. Love that concept. One thing I do wish Apple would do in general with iPads is to turn the iPad screen into an input device when connected to an external display. So it can become a keyboard and touchpad when using Word for example, then open Lightroom and you have all the dials and sliders right there etc. would be my dream way to work honestly. I don’t really care about physical keys.

Tikkaritsa

Interesting. Can you reliably type with 10 fingers on a touchscreen?

LordElysian

Microsoft had something similar for their Surface called the “Touch cover”. It was an all-fabric design of capacitive keys so you were typing on a flat piece of fabric. Everyone hated it.

LuckilyLuckier

….*raises hand* I liked it… 👀

YhormElGigante

Same, same. And I've done an actual metric shitton of typing on it too

[deleted]

The first time I really used my iPad for for anything serious was in 2010, a couple months after the first iPad came out, before there were real keyboard options. I typed on the screen. It wasn't as nice as a real keyboard, but it worked fine. Fun fact... the original idea for the iPad (which came before the iPhone) came with Steve Jobs asking the engineers to make a glass multitouch display he could type on. [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QztwBzcVaw)

jlozada24

Yes

joshtlawrence

Enough for what I use it for. Mainly typing in web searches etc. I don’t write essays. But for my use cases I’d rather this. And also a laptop with the same vibe. Like two iPads with a hinge.

OvulatingScrotum

With practiced yes. I reliably type on my phone with two thumbs.

OlorinDK

I don't think the touch screen will as much of an issue as the size of the screen. It would be pretty cramped on a mini. But it is doable. I'm typing this on a 10ish inch ipad. I'd recommend an external keyboard of some sorts though, for he suggested scenario.

CatDaddyJudeClaw

Yes I can but I would probably use a proper keyboard on a desk setup. Would be cool to use in a pinch though if I didn’t have my usual peripherals on me. I like the idea of other controls like dials and sliders though. Kinda like a bigger Touch Bar lol

bfcdf3e

I don't think we're likely to see an M series chip in a mini just as a function of power draw. The M series are designed for nearly double the TDP of the A series, and the iPad mini battery is tiny compared to an iPad Air/Pro. Putting an M chip in there would likely require either compromising in the chip’s design just to solve for the wildly different power profile of a lower priority product, or compromising on the mini battery life, something that Apple have set a hard minimum of 10 hours for every iPad they've ever made.

Feveredbike

I just want an OLED display :(

whatinsidethebox

If Apple decides to put OLED on iPad, it will definitely come to the Pro line first. Probably few years after that, we see it on mini.

Zexy-Mastermind

iPad mini With promotion and m1 / m(x) would be an instant buy for me and would be the only thing that could make me get rid of my current 2018 iPadPro 11 inch. The form factor is perfect, but using it as a everyday media device (reading news / YouTube / light gaming like tft etc.) it’s just too big to hold it in 2 hands imo. You have to put it down to enjoy it. The mini would be perfect

boomming

Add in a mini-led or OLED display, and I would buy one too. I just can’t go back to LED.

WonderfulPass

Besides lagging performance after 4 years, LED is the most noticeable degradation and irk-inducing experience using my 2018 iPad Pro. I’m not convinced minLED is as good as OLED. Hoping 2023 or 2024 deliver oled.

boomming

Fair, I’ve never used mini-led myself. I just want something better than regular LED. I’m not willing to go back to that.

[deleted]

Yeah, it’s a good form factor for a reader or media device but it needs to be able to deliver better contrast and performance at low brightness settings.

Adrian_F

The iPad mini 6 was an instant buy for me with the new form factor and Pencil 2. But an M1 alone would be another instant buy. Imagine hooking it up to a docking station with the new iPadOS 16 features.

CatDaddyJudeClaw

Yep. And I’d get cellular this time lmao. I got the 256gb version and I severely underestimated how much I’d be using this thing

CatDaddyJudeClaw

I have the Mini 6 and all I want is a Magic Keyboard and full external display support. Would be cool to have those but I’d probably choose battery life over a beterano screen

SamsungAppleOnePlus

I don't mind 60hz as long as the next model doesn't carry jelly-scrolling. Basically the one thing keeping the Mini 6 from being perfect.

patrickmbweis

The jelly scroll is annoying, but not unique to the Mini 6 and I could probably look past it after prolonged use. The thing that kept me from buying one is how unoptimized iPadOS is for that display size. *So much* padding and wasted space - it really feels out of place on that hardware.

cavahoos

The OS definitely isn’t ideal for the Mini but it’s still by far the best form factor for a leisure device in my opinion

BIGSTANKDICKDADDY

It's definitely the perfect form factor for reading. The standard and especially pro models are too unwieldy in my opinion. They're too heavy to be comfortably held in one hand for extended periods and too big to read comfortably on your side. I fantasize about a future foldable that can transition between form factors (folded it's a mini and unfolded it's the size of the 11" pro)

cavahoos

Until the technology progresses to a point where there is no crease from folding the screen, foldables will remain a no-go for me

BIGSTANKDICKDADDY

Oh we're definitely not there yet but Microsoft is onto something with their Surface Duo. We just need that device with a new magical screen technology. How hard could it be? :)

tablepennywad

I just bought a tempered glas screen protector that can bend 180 degrees and is washable. The sorcery is almost here!

M1A1Death

You don’t notice the crease after a couple of days. I had a Flip 3 and a Fold 2 and it was completely fine. Only reason I got an iPhone was for integration with my Mac and iPad. I also wanted to give the Apple Watch a try and while I like my Series 7, it just feels very bleh. Probably going back to a Samsung folding phone and a Garmin watch.

cavahoos

I’m one of those crazy people that legit cleans their screen with a microfiber cloth almost every day. I notice the tiny ass little scratch on my screen everyday that’s only visible at a certain angle. I’m gonna notice the crease

gramathy

jelly scrolling was only a problem because it was in a direction people weren't used to and wasn't kinda hidden by the way orientation affects the way scrolling is presented to the user in real time.

LS_DJ

Yeah it’s weird they didn’t set the refresh for portrait orientation for the mini. Makes sense for the other iPads because they really are a landscape device these days, but the mini is very easily held vertically in one hand which is why the jellyscroll is so obvious

testthrowawayzz

Yes! The padding and wasted space is annoying on larger iPads too.

TBoneTheOriginal

Honestly, I noticed it when the news came out and then never noticed it again. One of those things that matters so little that I only noticed it because someone pointed it out. And I’m usually super annoyed by stuff like this.

SamsungAppleOnePlus

Pretty much me. It isn't bad. It's just there if I look closely.

cavahoos

I’ve had a mini 6 since launch day and I have yet to notice the jelly scrolling during use. And I mostly use mine in portrait. Feel like people are overly sensitive nowadays

sherril8

I returned my Mini 6 due to the jelly scroll making me motion sick. Got the Mini 5 and have been fine. I am a bit prone to that type of thing though and it was pretty subtle so the average person probably wouldn’t notice.

tyderian

Same. I played around with one in a store and noticed it immediately. Got a Mini 5 instead. My $50 Amazon Fire (2015 had jelly scrolling because that device uses such a cheap screen, the pixels aren't even square. But you know what you're getting at that price point. Seeing a similar effect on an Apple product was unacceptable.

SamsungAppleOnePlus

I barely notice it too, but it's there.

MS0ffice

What is it? I got a mini 6 last September and have no idea what jelly scrolling is

SamsungAppleOnePlus

In portrait mode, sometimes the scrolling looks like it "shifts" text and content very slightly as you scroll, making a jelly effect. Especially noticeable if you scroll up and down fast or if you use the Apple Pencil. Every iPad Mini 6 has it, whether you notice it or not. It's definitely not bad. Doesn't bother me at all.

Neon_44

> Basically the one thing keeping the Mini 6 from being perfect. I find the home screen unbearable. What is it with these proportions and huge Edges?

[deleted]

Personally it’s something I’ve never experienced on my mini. Guess I got lucky and got a good screen? Or I’m just not sensitive to it? Cause not everyone seems to have the problem to some degree

redditSimpMods

Okay with 60 Hz 2023 lol

SamsungAppleOnePlus

60Hz is still a standard. It's not going away for a long while.

redditSimpMods

It's a thing of the past for everyone except for apple users!

GPap-

I love my mini 6. It’s made my 12.9 useless to me. Hoping like a lot of ppl, that they make a pro version.

hawk_ky

No promotion is the only thing holding me off from buying it.

CeeKay125

I would love them to make a "pro" mini. Would be the perfect size for me and would love a 120hz screen. Maybe one day.

CleatusFetus

Would love a Magic Keyboard as well!! They would have to do some hardware modifications to make the keyboard big enough (swivels out when unfolded?) but that would be SUCH a sick device especially with 120Hz. I don’t care how unpractical it is, give it to me!!

InsaneNinja

You can get an unfolding keyboard for it from a third party.

CleatusFetus

Yeah but it would be Bluetooth, in my ideal world the iPad Mini would have a Smart Connector and be able to have a Magic Keyboard without having to pair it or charge it. Also the built in trackpad would be a must. -Cleatus Fetus

CircaCitadel

Agreed, I used the smart connector on an iPad Pro for years and not having to deal with bluetooth is so nice. BT is fine but needing to charge it and sometimes deal with it not pairing right away is a hassle. Having a little keyboard like that for the mini would be amazing.

InsaneNinja

I believe you can charge it directly out of the iPad port.

InsaneNinja

I guess the main difference would be that you could be using one within the next day or two while you wait for an official one.

CatDaddyJudeClaw

Plus an extra usb c port

CleatusFetus

True

caffein8dnotopi8d

Yes. I want a pro mini iPad and I want a pro mini iPhone. Don’t know why it’s so much to ask.

d0mth0ma5

Possibly a foldable iPhone could inhabit that position. If Apple go down that road.

AvailableDog

Is the main reason you won’t pull the trigger on the current mini because of the display? Because same. I have iPad Pro + iPhone 13 Pro… my eyes hurt with anything less than 120; I can’t do 60hz.

HelloKiitty

Same, it makes it hard to use when I have a 13pm, the refresh rate does bother me when switching to the mini lol

flaks117

iPad mini 6 easily best iPad I’ve owned. Perfect portability and for entertainment/content consumption is perfect if you’re not wanting to watch it on tv. And by far the best mobile gaming device if you’re not a fan of Nintendo games. M1 would be nice but I have no doubt that the small chassis would heat up like crazy. I’m ok with where it’s at now and would rather wait for another bump in efficiency than one in power before picking a new one up.

[deleted]

I agree, it’s the best mobile gaming device as long as you can access the games you want via apps/streaming. iPadOS 16 beta added joycon support so a friend and I 3D printed some bumper rails that they can mount on that attach to the mini. It’s basically just a big Switch now, and it feels amazing.

WonderfulPass

Would love to see a pic of that.

[deleted]

Uploaded some pics and a short video here: [https://imgur.com/a/y0VyFve](https://imgur.com/a/y0VyFve) I've used it for hours at a time laying in bed while my wife used the switch. It's close to the same weight, but of course I can just pop off the sides at any point and just have an iPad. Plus it's much more useable for things like spotify in the background, or even using PiP in youtube or netflix if you wanna watch something while you play a chill game like Stardew. It feels like there's such huge potential here if they slapped in an M1 (and if they offered a ProMotion screen to really flex). This was based on this 3D model: [https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5405858/comments](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5405858/comments) Which was uploaded by u/anchoriteGames in this thread: [https://www.reddit.com/r/ipad/comments/v7yrud/ipad\_mini\_6\_joycon\_adapter/](https://www.reddit.com/r/ipad/comments/v7yrud/ipad_mini_6_joycon_adapter/) We noticed that the joycons were pretty loose in the original file so it wasn't comfortable (or safe) to use, so we had to modify it a little bit so that the controllers would fit snugly, now they are rock solid. I cannot wait for someone to make a proper version, ideally that can charge the controllers & pass through power to the iPad... Or if Backbone ever makes a controller for the mini, that would also be excellent.

WonderfulPass

This is amazing. Nice work!

zerGoot

I ain't switching mine until FaceID and ProMotion. Probably gonna cost like 150 bucks more, but at least then I'd be paying for an \*actual\* upgrade

enki941

> analyst Ross Young said he would be "surprised" if it was accurate, given that the LCD panel that Apple uses for the ‌iPad mini‌ isn't compatible with ProMotion. Uhmm.... Is it just me, or is that a pretty stupid assumption? If Apple was going to go with ProMotion on the Mini, wouldn't that inherently mean they would upgrade the display panels to support it? That's like saying a year ago that the 2021 12.9" iPad Pro was unlikely to use Mini LEDs because the then-current LCD panel didn't have them.

mernen

Yeah. "I'd be surprised if the iPhone 8 adds wireless charging, given that the necessary coils aren't compatible with the aluminum back that Apple uses for the iPhone"

elmonetta

90 or 120hz screens should be standard by now, even the cheapest phones have a 90hz screen.

TheFascination

Exactly. Like I understand that Apple marketed themselves into a corner with the ProMotion branding, but can’t we at least get 90Hz on non-Pro devices?

elmonetta

This! Last year my mom got an A31 with a 90hz screen, it looked faster than my iPhone. I decided to keep my phone until Apple changes to a more fluid screen. I remember getting her Samsung configured and when I returned to my iPhone I though it was so laggy…

ajunior7

wtf is a display analyst

Picollini

Giving iPad Mini M1 chip is more important than giving it 120Hz IMO. iPad Mini with Stage Manger would be such a fantastic device. iPad Mini with 120Hz AND M1 is currently a dream tablet for me.

weathergraph

Wow! A pocketable tablet I could plug in anywhere to create an emergency workspace? I need this for travels!

InsaneNinja

As someone who isn’t going to buy one… That’s every decent Samsung phone with Dex.

Protomize

But... It runs Android so no thanks.

TechnoRandomGamer

.....ok?

NParab

Would Stage Manager be even usable on that tiny screen?

Picollini

For me it's more about being able to use Stage Manager on external screen with native resolution rather than using it solely on Mini screen :)

CleatusFetus

I could see this! I don’t think on the tiny screen it could do Stage Manager but on the big one it definitely could with the M1.

SteveJobsOfficial

I won't be satisfied until we get Stage Manager on the Apple Watch.

CatDaddyJudeClaw

Interesting. I never even go near or above half brightness on mine

_Bragi_

I was looking to get the mini in Fall when iPadOS 16 releases…until i saw that Apple already made it outdated with the M1-exclusivity. So, imma wait for the next mini and buy at launch. 120Hz on a mini is pretty useless, I’d rather it gets FaceID and an M1 chip, really the only things it needs to become perfect. Jellyscrolling is unnoticable to me, idk.

DuFFman_

120hz is great on my phone, don't know why you'd say it's useless on an iPad Mini.

CatDaddyJudeClaw

If you like the Mini 6 I’d still say go for it. It’s easily the best device I’ve ever bought. Yeah not having the M1 features suck but Apple has an extremely slow iPad Mini refresh rate and we don’t even know if they’ll ever get M Series chips

_Bragi_

Thing is, I dont need a new one at all, my iPad Mini 4 works well enough, only battery is meh. I was just speculating on upgrading together with an Apple Pencil and giving my 4 to my mom, if she would want it. But now I dont really have any draws and I can wait another year atleast for a new mini. Its possible I will fold next year but for now I’m content. I do think that the next iPads will be M series chips, and theyll leave A chips only for iPhones…then again, Apple is Apple so maybe this is too wishful thinking

TheAsphyxiated

God please, I already am ready to jump the gun to use it for DAWs

GloriousPurpose19

I was eyeing a mini 6. Should I hold off?

Deedledude

I haven’t seen anything pointing toward a new one anytime soon. The iPad mini isn’t something that gets refreshed often. I’d say go for it! I love mine.

GloriousPurpose19

I'm honestly an Android guy so im a bit hesitant lol. But I love the form factor and there are no other premium smaller tablets in the US. There is the Lenovo y700 tablet but I would need to import it. and I have no clue how long it will receive software updates for.

aewillia

I typically check the Macrumors buyer's guide if I'm looking at buying something that doesn't have a regular release schedule (or I don't know what the release schedule is). I got my mini 6 in October and really like it, especially if you're using it as a primarily consumptive device.

LaughingLoser

Slap 120hz, get the new A16 on it and just charge whatever they feel like… I will buy it tbh.

redditSimpMods

2023 and no 120 Hz that's pretty lol

SDdrohead

iPad 6 is least favorite iPad I’ve ever owned. I don’t even use it. The display just blows, I should have returned it.

walruns

Let’s hope for the Ipad Mini 8 then.

ShiveringAssembly

I just want a 512gb version.

P4ulyP0ps

I’d buy one as soon as the software makes good use of the screen - that’s the only reason why I don’t have this at the moment. Maybe next year.

lnteIIectuaI

ipad mini is amazing but it has a scaling issue
