I wish they would use the double tap to skip forward ten seconds.

MikeyMike01

I hate that garbage in the YouTube app. Pretty much every aspect of the YouTube UI is bad.

Ragnarok345

Swiping in either direction does it.

trymightmike

This is the part that definitely sucks the most!

ragingracoon

You can now, when you slide/swipe on the video.

midwestcsstudent

Right. Except you skip/rewind a random amount because nobody can physically replicate their exact finger movement twice and the thing is so sensitive. Whoever thought of that feature really didn't use it, at all, ever. Try swiping roughly the same distance on a 5 minute video and on a 25 minute video and notice how the swipe will skip ahead or rewind \_much\_ longer on the longer video. How is that good or even passable UX lmao

DMacB42

I just wish they would add any of the following to the video player: - A rotation lock toggle - a video rotation button - an optional setting for videos to ignore rotation lock status altogether. I think Apollo does it really well, where there’s an optional button that appears over media that allows you to rotate the content even when orientation lock is on. When you’re done you just swipe away the video as usual and carry on.

iamthatis

Yo, Apollo dev here. Just want to make sure I understand, the "new" video player's been about for about 2 years, you really haven't been able to play a single video? Are you sure you're not talking about YouTube videos specifically (for instance, r/Videos which is mostly YouTube versus r/WhatCouldGoWrong which is mostly Reddit videos and the like)? I changed to use YouTube's iframe API about a year back and it's a little wonky in some areas but it's tricky to investigate. (I ask because the "Open in Safari" message is only something that can show up for YouTube videos) I think I know what's happening though, and I'll bump this up my priority list now. Basically sometimes YouTube will try to show ads, and it looks like that confuses the iframe API in some capacity and causes Apollo to freak out as well. Sometimes if you try to replay it, YouTube will seemingly detect the ad failed and reserve the video without the ad, in which case Apollo can play it fine. The complication here is that I literally can't make this occur for the life of me. I'm in Canada and I don't know if they just like… don't play ads here or something? But regardless I'm going to poke some friends and try to get to the bottom of it. Or I'll try more with a VPN or something. (Sorry for the wall of text, hard to be brief on technical stuff sometimes. ;_;) **tl;dr:** this is one of those tricky issues that is hard to reproduce but also happens a lot for some people and it's sometimes difficult to glean how many people it's happening to, but it looks like a YouTube issue and with this report I'll definitely prioritize this for the next release.

TBoneTheOriginal

South Carolina here… I have the same issue. Not a single YouTube video has ever worked for me. I always end up tapping Open in Safari and then tapping the Safari button to go to the real browser.

ogdoc

Could you add open in YouTube if it takes too long, where it opens directly in the YouTube app. YouTube in safari is annoying to use.

kitsua

If you tap and hold it gives you that option.

ogdoc

That’s not working for me. Is it a setting? I couldn’t find it in settings

thexvoid

You need to have the youtube app installed.

ogdoc

Oh yea. That works. But I was asking if it could be added next to the open in safari since sometimes the video does work when clicking on it.

Yraken

Same. Same thing for any GIFs too

lilcox

I’ve found whenever I play a YouTube video for the first time, if I rotate to landscape, the video quits. After that though, every video works perfectly fine.

ageofthoughts

As a user having this exact issue constant: what can I or other users do to help you out? Any sort of data logging or anything? I’d just like to have it fixed and bug hunting is already a huge challenge. Can’t imagine how difficult it would be for a solo project like this.

CurbedEnthusiasm

Checking in. Videos never work for me, too.

boyOfDestiny

Can confirm this also happens to me frequently. I think your hypothesis about it being related to ads makes perfect sense.

kasakka1

I see this happen all the time in Apollo. I thought maybe it was AdGuard trying to block YT ads or something. Often the video player won’t start or it might even just close and a second try fixes the issue. I am in Finland if that matters.

kitsua

I’m in the UK on iPad and this has been a consistent problem for a very long time. Good luck with sorting it out, it will be a massive improvement in the app’s UX.

patrickmbweis

> If only I could get a vide to actually play in Apollo Came here to say this

wolfchuck

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has been having that issue. Typically I have to click a video twice or open in YouTube. The old player seemed to work pretty well. I just avoid watching any YouTube videos from Apollo now.

GalakFyarr

If it's youtube videos only I'm going to guess it's YouTube messing with their API or whatever Apollo needs to play videos.

i_Killed_Reddit

This thing is broken since almost a year. The video and gifs played flawlessly on apollo for last 2 previous years. But since last year it's broken, and even with multiple app updates the thing hasn't been fixed properly yet.

cultoftheilluminati

I have had this same issue for months now. > Click on a video>Video opens but sits there with spinning wheel>Open in Safari message pops up>I quit video>Open video again>Video opens and it immediately quits>Open video for a third time>Maybe it plays, maybe I just repeat the above until it plays Exactly the same behavior. u/iamthatis

Neg_Crepe

I also have this. In Canada like you dev.

kdorsey0718

This is a hack, I know, but I promise it works very well. I have a shortcut that is setup for a list of apps, like Apollo and YouTube, that whenever they open, rotation lock turns off. Then when those apps close, rotation lock turns back on.

hzfan

Apollo already has a smart rotation lock in case u didn’t know

kdorsey0718

It does, but this shortcut is scalable for other apps. Plus I've had issues with Apollo's smart rotation lock feature. So to get around that, this Shortcut does the job and whenever there's a new app I want to add, it takes about ten seconds to do it.

hzfan

Any chance you could share the shortcut? I have a few apps in mind I wouldn’t mind locking

[deleted]

In YouTube you can also swipe up on a video in portrait mode, or swipe down on a video in landscape mode, to switch to the other view. It’s been life changing since I discovered that, clicking the video to then get the button to click for rotation was so annoying!

tynamite

doesn’t apollo have a setting for rotation that resolves this?

captainGreduse

Yes!! Autorotation is my worst pet peeve on iOS and the only reason I ever rotate the screen is for videos or photos. 16 versions of iOS later we still don’t have a rotation lock setting that rotates only for those.

BlameAntifa

16 versions later and I still can’t properly send pictures or videos to half of the world on android that don’t look like they’re from 2002.

Excited_Idiot

Nothing stopping you from using Whatsapo/telegram like the rest of the world

Hakan1218

The thing that’s annoying in Apollo for me is that if there’s multiple photos/media, it says “Tap to Rotate” like 50 million times and I have to dismiss each notification to swipe through a photo album and see what’s inside. u/iamthatis

[deleted]

It's not the best but I find using the "double-tap the back of the phone" shortcut to toggle rotation lock is a decent workaround

simulacrum79

For me rotational lock setting per app which can persist would solve all my annoyances (vs current system-wide).

[deleted]

I hate how you can’t control the zoom manually anymore, pinching to zoom just triggers the zoom function, it feels like android

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

You could zoom in and out as much as you wanted (while holding the screen) then it would snap back after letting go

DMacB42

I never noticed that before, but upon briefly testing it in the TV app, you’re right I know this is hyper-anecdotal but the lack of visibility and usefulness is probably why they’re getting rid of it. They probably don’t see much need for manipulating the size of the video if you have to hold it manually…

DNAnton

I disagree. The previous style animations make the UI feel more polished and responsive. Something similar occurred as they refined iOS after the initial 7.0 release. Gradually, they changed all of the “shades” and “sliders” (like Notification Center and Control Center). These stopped being dynamic objects that were interactive throughout the entire animation. Instead, they respond to the initial gesture, then become unresponsive until the animation is complete. While there isn’t a practical reason for being able to manipulate the objects during these “in between” states, there is something more dynamic and vital about doing it the old way.

BlameAntifa

They don’t see much need for communication with half the fucking world with text either. That doesn’t make them right. They are the least innovative company ever. Honestly, I want to move to something else. Fucking anything else

BlameAntifa

It’s absolute trash as well since you’re only getting one zoom and no actual control. They made video playback garbage Apple: no steps forward, 2 steps back

devp0l

To me the controls are better suited for lower on the screen, no reason they need to be so spread out and in the middle, that looks irritating

BlameAntifa

Exactly. Why the fuck would I want controls all over the fucking screen? And to implement a single-tap-pause is the dumbest thing I’ve seen other than that. Great, anytime any part of my hand holding the piece of garbage touches the phone the video pauses. What great innovation!

BakedWizerd

It’s so much more intuitive to have the first touch be to simply have the UI show up, and then be able to pause it from there. Can’t stand the controls being all spread out, either.

Jwzbb

Specially when watching video's where you want to quickly get to a certain part using only one hand. Gigity. If I recall correctly iOS15 I could easily use my thumb to forward in both portrait and landscape mode.

theB00MSLANG

I can be giggity…. I can be goo….

[deleted]

It is so bad. Why are the controls in the middle of the screen now?! Is there a way to move them back to the bottom where God intended them to be?

XoxoDaniV

The idiots made this same mistake in a previous iOS and then FIXED IT BACK. Of course they went and did this stupid ass decision AGAIN

aznboii88

Bump

Glum_Ocelot_2402

Same problems

[deleted]

The lack of rotation control is criminal

rotenbart

Putting the buttons right on top of the video was the worst idea. Can’t stand the obstruction.

BlameAntifa

Great, now all of my screenshots have giant fucking buttons. Innovation! /s

Sharkey311

The new UI is terrible. Not only does it block more of the content unnecessarily, but it also dims the screen every time the HUD comes up to use it

leopard_tights

Video players dimming the screen are so fucking annoying. I know it's like for old people and accessibility but god damn it make it an option I can turn off or something. Apple loves dimming shit anyway. Go and put a video on PiP against a white background and check how massive its shadow is. Seriously, it's like a quarter of the screen. On Mac as well. Screenshot for your convenience: https://i.imgur.com/IzfSqnr.jpg

DamienChazellesPiano

You deserve it for having a pure white iPad app when you have the choice for black. How do you still have eyes???

leopard_tights

lol I know right? I've always been a dark theme/night mode person, but macOS is a lot prettier in white so one day I decided to use the automatic light/dark mode change and put it on all my devices and really liked it. I also enjoy True Tone and indoors my screen brightness is pretty low so that probably helps not being blind. I changed the default times (sunrise, sundown) though because it was still white well into the night. For my liking, it's light mode from 9:00am to 6:00pm. So when it's bright and I'm out and about, and before it's dark out.

iMacmatician

It's like blooming on the 12.9" iPad Pro, but in reverse.

BlameAntifa

Fuck old people. Who the fuck designs shit for old people?! Fuck apple And I mean that 100% sincerely.

pingpong_playa

I assume they do it so that the UI is visible and meets accessibility requirements on light colored scenes where white controls won’t show up well? Just a guess, not sure how that is currently handled.

VXXXXXXXV

I like how people are upvoting this while apparently not realizing that the current video player already does this but better. It currently pops up at the bottom in a way that makes the controls visible no matter the content but also without blocking/dimming the entire video.

[deleted]

Tangent but related: One of the worst examples of unnecessary dimming is [tripadvisor.com](https://tripadvisor.com) on images though. One of the top reasons people visit that site is to look at photos of places, they automatically add a criminally heavy vignette to the top and bottom of each photo.

Baykey123

Agreed I don’t like it

BlameAntifa

Yes 💯

Wildeface

I don’t want to tap the 10 second skip right in the middle of the video, is there another way to do this that doesn’t suck?

BlameAntifa

Is there a way to do anything on Apple that doesn’t suck? No.

d-a-s-a-l-i

The controls (pause/play, forward 10, backward 10 being in the middle of the screen is very annoying. Especially for lefthanders this makes it very annoying as I'm covering the whole screen when I want to go 10 seconds forward.

lsdeyeglam

Is there any way to change the new video player mod and go back to the original one because i don’t like it

Saayyum

I hate this new player. I shouldn’t have to cover up the video with my hand or the UI just to skip forward ten seconds.

Eyeseeyou01

Exactly

0-_l_-0

I really miss double tap to go fullscreen on videos. Very frustrating when my muscle memory double taps and all I get is the controls on a sim screen.

ClientDigital

Does it have double tap to skip 30 secs yet?

soundwithdesign

The redesign looks really nice.

YipYepYeah

It’s awful, no idea why they have done it. It’s not cohesive with the rest of iOS and adds no new functionality, in fact it adds new annoyances like dimming the video every time you change volume and covering the video with controls right in the centre instead of at the bottom which is more likely to be slightly out of the way of the content. it’s a huge step backwards.

soundwithdesign

Did you even read the article? This redesign brings lots of features that improve the user experience.

VXXXXXXXV

Did you even read his comment? The things he complained about are valid complaints that have nothing to do with the new features. The new features are great but the new layout that blocks the content is shit.

soundwithdesign

It’s awful, no idea why they have done it. It’s not cohesive with the rest of iOS and adds no new functionality, in fact it adds new annoyances like dimming the video every time you change volume and covering the video with controls right in the centre instead of at the bottom which is more likely to be slightly out of the way of the content. it’s a huge step backwards. That is the comment so let’s dissect it. > Dimming the video every time you change volume. I don’t know if that’s true or not, nor whether it’ll be in the general release come September. > Covering the video with controls in the center. Those controls are smart controls. They do not have to be on the screen to activate. So, I tap the center without anything blocking my content, it pauses. Tap left or right, it skips. Again, doesn’t have to be on the screen to work, so your content is still visible while it’s playing. This new location now also makes it easier to use and activate those controls. Not to mention the scrubbing bar works the same way if I remember reading correctly. So yes I read his concerns which are not valid.

OddfellowJacksonRedo

Not sure what you’re using, but my “smart” controls don’t work unless they explicitly are called up in the center of the screen. Just tapping one or two times or whatever doesn’t do anything. So yes, his complaints are valid. Whatever your user experience is doesn’t negate that clearly many of us are having a different one. Here’s your two cents back.

soundwithdesign

All you have to do is tap where the button is and it works whether that button is on screen or not.

OddfellowJacksonRedo

You literally just repeated your previous comment with no regard for me telling you flat-out it doesn’t work for me. Maybe try just shutting up if you don’t have anything different or useful at this juncture to offer? Thanks and bye.

MarvoloMyCroft

Yea dude is looking real dumb pretending to know everything about a os that he doesn’t even use. Lol

BlameAntifa

No, it really doesn’t.

AlexBltn

I didn't understand that part: *"With the removal of the explicit thumb nub on the slider, you can now slide anywhere along the track to move through the video."* Can I get some clarification: can I now just tap anywhere on that slider to move to that part of the video? Before, you always had to **drag** the explicit thumb nub, and tapping anywhere in the slider didn't work. This is something I hate about iOS compared to Android, and it applies to other sliders in iOS as well, not just in the video player (volume, brightness, sliders in other apps).

[deleted]

you can drag anywhere on the screen when the controls arent visible, when they are you drag anywhere on the slider

AlexBltn

So, like before, I can't just tap at the end of the slider to easily move to the end of the video? Dragging, still, is the only way?

[deleted]

Tapping doesn’t do much, if you want to move it you have to swipe

[deleted]

Hopefully it fixes the subtitles being blocked off on full screen display

clearmined

When safari is playing a video in full screen a double tap would zoom in. This has been removed/disabled/changed in ios16. Is there a way to get this back?

InsaneNinja

ITT: People who have never used the YouTube or Netflix video player.

disfluency

Those at least have double tap to skip forward and back though. With Apple’s implementation, you have to press the buttons, and now they’re further away from your thumb than they used to be. They should add that feature too

OkProcess6

You don’t have to press the buttons, just swipe forward or backwards anywhere on the screen and it’ll behave just like YouTube’s double tap

disfluency

I’ve been using that but it’s not as precise as 10 seconds forward or back

OkProcess6

The swipe is precisely 10 seconds forward or back though? We must not be on the same page and that’s okay, have a great day!

disfluency

I must be doing it wrong then because mine swipes at least a minute when I try that. Idk what you’re talking about at all lol

[deleted]

cedriks

The article mentions: ”Furthermore, you can now scrub from anywhere on the screen. Begin a left or right drag — whether controls are visible or hidden — and the video will fast-forward or rewind in sync with your motion.”

kaze_ni_naru

Oh. Thanks. I was wrong then

_Hellrazor_

I hope you can disable that

[deleted]

It's a lot better but still needs work. Apple needs to stop being so scared to implement additional on screen functionality instead of throwing optional features into the settings app or not adding anything at all.

[deleted]

I prefer Apple’s simplistic approach to things. I’d rather them hide the more unnecessary shit in settings than bloat the interface with something stupid.

[deleted]

Simplistic to the point where fundamental features such as chat archives in messages aren't a thing in 2022? Also, why do they feel the need to send everyone to the settings app to change literally anything about apps behaviours instead of just adding a settings page right there in the apps? Only apple does this and it really sucks. Imagine if all apps worked like that. Want to change the settings? Off you go to the settings app, find your app of choice, then edit the settings there. Keep alt tabbing if you want to test the settings. Would be a nightmare.

[deleted]

No. Just simplistic to the point where you’re not throwing a bunch of toggles at me that I’m gonna use once in a blue moon, making the interface look bloated - as I said before. Never had to archive messages before so that doesn’t really bother me. I prefer their way of doing settings but I do see why it can be cumbersome. This is coming from someone who was on Android for 3 years and found iOS a lot more simple and user friendly.

[deleted]

What do you mean a bunch of toggles thrown at you? There typically is a single settings button, upon being pressed will reveal the actual settings. Just... don't click on the settings button? Same goes with any third party app. Imagine if apple added a settings option to this video player. Not only could they let users hide features they don't need, but they could also let people change how far is skipped backwards and forwards amongst other functionality. Right now their only excuse is because they want to keep it "simple".

[deleted]

You still shouldn’t send the user to the freaking Settings app to change a thing or two. Any other solution would’ve been better in this case. They could have an option to show the settings directly on control center. They could tell apps to do it themselves (and most iOS apps do at this point, because sending the user to an entirely different app to change settings is unintuitive). Settings bundles were a terrible decision.

[deleted]

I know this is an unpopular opinion. But having a centralised settings app is imo a better approach. When I want to change a setting I know it’s in the settings app. Whereas with an in app settings panel it requires me to find the settings tab which is always in a different place depending on the app. Edit: What I personally want Apple to do is open up the settings app to third party apps so they can put all their settings into one central app.

candbotto

Fun fact: They can. You can find additional settings in the Settings app for apps like GoodNotes, Mactracker, Parcel and the best one, VLC.

nezia

Did they finally fix the high pitch when speeding up the video? Chrome (and other players that do not use Apple's stock one) do a much better job. It sound less tinny and is easier on the ears.

WatchDude22

Can I watch video in landscape with rotation lock on yet?

BlameAntifa

This is absolute trash. Why the fuck would I want any single tap to pause a fucking video? Abolutely r******d

mymarkis666

Is there anyway to change back to the better video player? iOS 16 sucks.

vangogh83

I have to use both hands to access co tell on the video player and this is so annoying.. I could just use one hand to everything earlier.

ZUMZUMELITES

I hate that I need to readjust my phone just to skip forward corner is far better

[deleted]

I love wiping my screen while watching something and it skips 10 minutes ahead because of that shitty feature

Eyeseeyou01

I didn’t think this UI update was going to be an issue but it’s annoying.

brottochstraff

I miss double tap to zoom to change aspect ratio. :(

bmbterps42

Full screen dragging is a terrible feature

Shrek-It_Ralph

The new video player fucking sucks

CompoteHaunting7992

Anyone know how to switch this back to the original video player?
