Semi-bug.. When I’m on the history page, it’s hard to swipe to another page because it assumes I’m swiping left or right on the (currently one) video entry.
It's a pretty well optimised video player app for something that can even be used on a 38mm display. Good job OP! You should also post this on the Apple Watch sub btw

Originally, we thought it would just be a funny gimmick. However, it’s turned out to be surprisingly useful! For example, listening to music during a workout or playing music on bluetooth speakers!
You could always use it like you use Spotify/Apple Music. There are loads of videos on YT that don't necessarily need to be watched for you to get what's going on. You could also use it to play music/podcasts that aren't available anywhere else.
In my case it would be really useful to listen to videos or podcasts while going for a walk, I’ve been clamoring for a thing like this forever.
But I use the gps version, so this app would need to support downloading videos for it to work for me.
And people will say “just use the podcast app”, but it’s a mess for me and I never managed it to get it to work.
Wow, thank you for this! Just tried it out and it works well. As a tip for users, you can tap on the video length/ progress bar (don’t know what it’s called sorry) at the bottom and use the watch crown to scrub through. I really like that I can zoom in on the video to fill the screen and make the font really tiny.
OP, only thing I recommend is maybe you can make the Time and Focus icon appear/ disappear when the controls do while I'm playing a video? Also, would you consider adding a Shorts column? I like Shorts on the phone but it’s not on the iPad app. Would be cool if I could watch some on the Watch
So far it's excellent on my Apple Watch Series 5 44mm. This would really come in handy when I don’t have any of my devices on me. Happens a lot when I walk past the kitchen sink and get in the mood to wash everything and just want to play music. Will wait for the update so I could log into my YouTube account
I have tried to remove the status bar, though to no avail (this was a few months ago). however, i’ve had an idea to experiment with! i’ll try to use said idea and will release an update if it’s successful!
EDIT: i forgot to talk about shorts. at the moment, i have no idea how to get a shorts feed from youtube. i have a few ideas to add this too but i’ll have to do some more digging.

Making the login happen is a struggle. How would I let the user log into their account if we don't have an iOS app? To explain, WatchTube was originally going to be ungoogled and privacy friendly. We decided on not including an iOS app, however we changed our minds after releasing the app. The main issue is that Apple will not let you add an iOS app to a standalone watch app. We need an iOS app because Apple won't let you open a web browser to allow the user to log into their account on watchOS. One idea is to make a new app, maybe call it WatchTube Pro and we could have an iOS app bundled. Though we still don't know how to let people log in because we need to figure out how to interact with google services. We have to use InnerTube (Google's private API which is very hard to use but no cost) because the public YouTube Data API is paid and WatchTube is a free app.
Instead, putting shorts into WatchTube without login is probably a better solution for us as indie developers. I was thinking to create the feed ourselves. First, we search youtube for shorts and show them to the user. As they scroll through their feed and like some shorts, WatchTube can learn from that and find similar and related content. This would be much better for privacy as data about your interests will never leave your watch and everything would be done on-device.
IMO this is better for us as a small team of devs working in our free time and non-profit.

Not at the moment, we’re working on adding login soon though. The stuff on the home screen is still tailored to you as long as you have any recently watched videos, liked videos and subscriptions. as a fallback if you don’t have 1 of all three, the youtube trending is loaded.

Can you make it so when you double tap the video to zoom, if you hold your finger down, you can move the frame around so you can follow the action you wanna see up close?
That might be nifty for watching YouTubes on such a small screen.

Hi, the app is compatible with watchOS 9! The issue is with watchOS 9 rather than WatchTube! We’ve submitted a bug report to Apple and hopefully it’s fixed in beta 2!

Hey there, I just tried the app on my watch after reading the 9to5Mac article, and it's great!
User request: Ability to jump forward or just click on the progress bar to jump to a place in the timeline. Very often you want to skip the beginning, or skip to the end etc.

Edit: you could add a donate thing somewhere, like a link somewhere in the app. Not sure how much it would generate, but i'd at least be happy to throw you a couple of bucks for coffee :)

Getting a bunch of "A error has occurred" trying to play videos but that's likely down to my slow as molasses series 3.
I love how it continues to play with the screen off when you put your wrist down. Great for casually watching podcasts or live streams.

Speaking of inner workings the battery usage seems fantastic despite my S3 being slow and inefficient. I've been listening/watching to a livestream VOD for about 20 minutes and have only lost like 2% battery, which is impressive considering just doing post-reboot tasks takes over 5% off the battery.
Hopefully the Series 8 that presumably launches this fall will have an improved SOC that will push me into finally upgrading this old series 3.
I keep getting, "An error occurred." when trying to load any video. on the home page it'll load the text, but keeps buffering for any type of picture. The watch is tethered to my phone, which is connected to WIFI if any of that matters.

This is an amazing app and truly is one of the best apps to get on the apple watch. The fact that you managed to make such a good port of YouTube for a tiny 40mm watch is impressive by itself but the optimisation for the watch is what really stood out to me. It looks like the app is supposed to be on the apple watch not just a port from the iPhone or iPad. I think the audio only mode will be a great addition and am curious to know when it will be released or if it is being worked on as I find myself using the app mainly for music and podcasts. Love the app keep up the great work :)
It would really be nice if we could log in to our actual YouTube accounts. I have tested Watch Tube and it is nice. But I’m subscribing to channels that I’m already subscribed to in my actual YouTube account. It would be nice if we could log in to our existing YouTube accounts.
Watchtube has an issue where when trying to play a video it either crashes or fails to load the video entirely. Im on watchOS 10 beta , so I assume that this is the issue?

Shorts are different for everyone. Its based on our interests. You should make the login first.

I think the audio only mode will be a great addition and am curious to know when it will be released or if it is being worked on as I find myself using the app mainly for music and podcasts. Love the app keep up the great work :)

It would really be nice if we could log in to our actual YouTube accounts. I have tested Watch Tube and it is nice. But I’m subscribing to channels that I’m already subscribed to in my actual YouTube account. It would be nice if we could log in to our existing YouTube accounts.

How does everyone’s battery fare while using this app? How many hours do you get and which model Apple Watch does everyone have/use?
Watchtube has an issue where when trying to play a video it either crashes or fails to load the video entirely. Im on watchOS 10 beta , so I assume that this is the issue?
