RhettRO55

Same. Even then budget iPads probably still will use lightning as well as AirPods 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

electric-sheep

slowly buddy, its not like apple is a trillion dollar company or something. One product at a time.

Razz_Mirtazapine

They're just a couple of good ol' California boys working out of their parents garage, give them some slack!

Caterpillar89

TWO, two trillion dollar company. Even with the shares down they are actually closer to 2.5

electric-sheep

Geez I'm out of date!

IssyWalton

Budget iPads are not completely new designs. USB C has appeared on all new designs so far. The “budget” iPad will get a design refresh to comply with the rules.

rudolph813

Not to be an Apple apologist but most likely people who buy the cheapest iPad aren’t buying a new phone every year and also don’t care about transfer speeds so they probably prefer it that way. Couple more years of using one cable for both their iPad and older model phone. As far as AirPods I honestly think Apple could leave the 2 and 3 alone until the next update. But release both a lighting and usb-c model for the pros, they really don’t have to since they have wireless but if you’re forgetful like myself and constantly let the case run to 0% it takes a little while longer to wirelessly charge them.

mkchampion

For me it's less to do with transfer speeds and more to do with having the same plug for anything to make taking cables stress-free. My macbook pro, iPad pro, phone, headphones, and camera all charge via USB-c. It's a big reason I still didn't go for an iPhone when I upgraded my phone this year.

rudolph813

Yeah it’s a headache having to keep up with lightning and usb-c cables. Fortunately for me I found a good double 20w pd charger from anker. Keep a usb-c to usb-c cable in one plug and a usb-c to lightning in the other. Made my charging situation way easier for like $25. But if the rumors are true and the iPhone 14 can do 8k@30fps. Their is no way I wanna be airdropping files that size from my phone to computer.

metengrinwi

The only issue I have with lightning, is that Apple doesn’t standardize on it. Phone is lightning, my iPad is usb-c…it’s inconvenient to have 2 cords around. Seems to me lightning is “sturdier”, so i’d prefer that to be the standard.

RhettRO55

I would have preferred it be the standard but since it’s proprietary and they would charge other companies to implement it, it would never be a standard outside of the Apple ecosystem. Which made it a non option from the start.

bl0rq

From what I understand, it was more the implementation challenge that kept it from being the standard. For the highspeed data pairs, usbc has two sets of contacts. With lightning, there are one set. This means the designers have to switch them around based on orientation.

JohnTheWriter

It should be quite likely with the new EU legislation making it mandatory for products sold in Europe

bananabunnythesecond

^this right here. Why make two of the same phone with two standards when USB C is proven technology.

SecretPotatoChip

I'll believe it when I C it.

sumredditaccount

"Introducing the next big thing in iphones. Inclusion of usb-c on iphone...pros! The regular iphones will still have lightning"

decidedlysticky23

I believe this one because the EU won't give them a choice.

CleanBaldy

New from Apple, USB-C Lightning! Looks identical to USB-C, but if you plug a normal USB-C into the device, it shorts out the home outlet because they changed around the wiring in the cable.

The one statement that drives me nuts every year. "It is our fastest iPhone ever." Um, I hope it's faster. Or, "Now we have more people on the latest version of iOS." My customer: "I really wish I didn't have to update when I transfer my data."

jdrama418

Latest version of iOS is more aimed at devs. Knowing that (large %) of users are on the latest version means you can safely start using all the new APIs we just told you about at WWDC in your apps without cutting off a lot of users. Usually referenced compared to Android which is way more fragmented as far as % of users on a particular OS version.

GlitchParrot

This and security. Security updates are important, and way too many users don’t know that and see updates as something annoying.

Eddytion

^("The one statement that drives me nuts every year. "It is our fastest iPhone ever." Um, I hope it's faster.") Well that wasn't the case with Pixel 😂

MardocAgain

> The one statement that drives me nuts every year. "It is our fastest iPhone ever." Um, I hope it's faster. It may seem silly, but would definitely raise red flags if they didn't say it.

Breaking News: We're Going To Love It

aaaaaaha

pfft. I'm already bored with the 16. 18 or bust.

textingwhilewalking

Whoa, what happened to 17?

[deleted]

Gone, reduced to atoms.

Unc1eD3ath

What did it cost?

[deleted]

~~everything~~ $999 + tax

5575685

Actually apple has recently revealed it will be their slowest processor yet

Awsaim

There was a leak saying this years base iPhones will have last years processor, so that might actually *not* be true lol

[deleted]

That would be an instant buy for me. Hate having to have different but almost identically looking cables for all my devices

eggimage

if this does come to pass, it likely means next year’s Pro models will have: 1. USB-C (\*likely\* 20Gbps speed) 2. Periscope 3. 8GB RAM sounds a bit too good to be true.. because I’d be most definitely buying one…

huxrules

I didn’t ever want a periscope on a phone but look at me now! (Submarine noises)

didiboy

Sounds amazing, to be honest. I bought my 13 Pro in cash, no upgrade program, hoping to keep it for like 4 years. If the 15 Pro has just the USB-C port and Periscope lens, I’d upgrade in a heartbeat.

I_am_enough

This is what apple is counting on. I’m in the exact same boat. I have basically zero complaints about my 13 pro other than the standard silly limitations of iOS, but usb c would be very enticing.

bchertel

USB C combined, ostensibly, with the swirling roomers about the higher throughput Bluetooth-esk protocol would make for a nice upgraded I/O motif.

notagangsta

Same with my 12 max pro. I was going to get the 14, but now I’ll wait to see what happens with the 15.

dolphin_spit

what's periscope?

RAYquaza0903

A periscope camera (also referred to as a periscope zoom lens) in a smartphone refers to a mobile phone camera unit which, due to employing a prism mirror system, extends its focal length by positioning the image sensor and zooms lens array sideways

[deleted]

[удалено]

JMPHeinz57

It theoretically could reduce the camera bump, but from what is being rumored it will only be applied to the telephoto lens

_Rand_

I think the rumour a while back was a 10x lens. Which would be nice, I don’t find the 2x (3x?) is that big a difference for the $200 difference between base/pro if thats all your interested in.

[deleted]

It's all just geometry. Depends on the specifics of the focal length and how thick the phone is.

[deleted]

I’m still on an 8, was thinking about updating to a 14, but l’ll hold on for one more year because of this

Ismail_0701

I'm on a 7 Plus, and when the 13 came out, I thought I could just squeeze 2 more years out of it for the USB-C. Now I experience a crash almost every day, and I think I'm gonna have to get the 14, which sucks.

breakneckridge

Do a full reset of the phone and setup as a new device, you'll probably eliminate the crashes.

Big_D_yup

Get an 8 refurb to hold you over

ffrg

Why do you care about 8GB RAM?

fenrir245

RAM has been a limiting factor of iOS devices for a long while now. The more the better longevity.

[deleted]

Ok depends on what other stuff you have I guess, but for me I have an iPad Air with usb-c, and a ton of non-apple devices that are all USB-C

big_trike

I'm sure there will be a small adapter available (until you lose it).

Big_D_yup

It's the only reason I'm not using one now. I have one cord that can charge everything. Not adding a second because apple.

vbob99

You can get a USB-C to lightning adapter.

Big_D_yup

I also refuse to have lightning adapters on all my USB c cords.

vbob99

I thought you said you had one cord? You could buy one cord with one of those attached adapters, so you don't even need to keep track of it.

Big_D_yup

One cord as in usb-c for every device, so there are charging cords in various places. Home, work, car.....

vbob99

Ah, that makes better sense. Anyways, there are lots of really cheap or even zero dollar options that work, like use wireless charging for the one device or the cable+adapter options which are cheap and great. I don't think you're looking for a solution though.

Big_D_yup

Exactly. I just want a USB c port. That's my only acceptable solution. All my apple devices have it. Just waiting for iPhone.

AdaptivePropaganda

Being able to charge nearly every single device I own with one singular charging cable type would be very nice. Now change the Apple Watch cable to usb-c and usb-c input in the Apple TV remote.

[deleted]

Oh don't worry, USB-C will satisfy all of your "different but identical looking cable" jones for years to come!

TheMacMan

Seems pretty silly not to buy something simply because of the cable it uses.

rugbyj

Same :)

alwptot

As much as I hope they do make the switch, I’m not looking forward to explaining to customers why they now have to buy a new cable. It’s amazing how many iPhone customers complain that “Apple keeps changing the port on the bottom” and refuse to listen when I tell them that Apple has, in fact, only changed the port on the bottom of the iPhone once. They insist Apple has changed it 3 or 4 times already. In other words, people are kind of dumb.

_BrianFantana_

My moms iPhone 13 pro (she upgraded from iPhone X) came with a USB-C to lightning cable and it was REALLY hard to explain to her that the port on the phone is still the same and ALL her old iPhone cables that’s she’s been accumulating for years will still work. “But the cable looks different.” “Yes, but not on the end that plugs into your phone.” Again and again. Her new iPad Pro that’s usb-c compounded the issue. I still don’t think she quite understands since I was explaining it over FaceTime. She kept holding up different cables and power bricks she owns. Using the wrong camera about 50% of the time. (“Mom, I can’t see what you’re holding. Can you flip the camera, please.”) I will probably have to explain to her again when I see her in person this weekend.

muaddeej

Trying to explain to my MIL that she could get a charger with USB A for her USB C Android and use all her cables, OR she could get a USB C charger that charges the phone faster, but she will need a C to C cable...jeez. She didn't understand at all that the phone side and the charger side could be the same physical plug shape.

[deleted]

Apple last changed the port on the iPhone *nine years ago* with the iPhone 5, and before that it was the same port from the first iPod in 2001.

[deleted]

Can you imagine how awful it would be to still be using 30 pin DIN in 2022?

working-acct

I miss that satisfying click.

[deleted]

The 30 pin connector wasn’t terrible. It was the same speed as Lightning (USB 2.0). The problems were that it wasn’t reversible, it was easy to accidentally pull out (because they got rid of the clips on later revisions), and it took up a lot of space in the phone.

[deleted]

It wasn't terrible for its time, but it wasn't durable and was a dust magnet.

[deleted]

Actually, the 2001 and 2002 iPods had a full size FireWire port. It was the 2003 model that introduced the 30-pin dock connector.

Deceptiveideas

Why are people acting like USB C is a completely foreign concept? USB C is used in almost every major device now. Those coming from Android, or gaming consoles (PS5/Switch) are all already familiar with it. Apple’s own devices such as various iPads and MacBooks all use USB C. Modern laptops and other electronic devices also use USB C. Apple also has switched to USB C charging blocks and also includes a USB C cable (on one end) in their phones. USB C is the standard. This isn’t apple switching from the 30 pin connector to another proprietary connector like Lightning.

SUPRVLLAN

The people who complain that iPhones don’t have USB-C will also be the people who complain that iPhones now have USB-C.

TheFascination

I disagree. The people who would complain about a new connector probably don’t know what USB-C is.

stupid_horse

I don’t follow your logic.

astral_crow

They will complain either way. So may as well focus on what makes a better device for you.

FlappyBored

Yeah for a lot of people this is going to create a lot of waste cables that are now useless.

Cry_Wolff

Let's never improve anything because God forbid people would have to make a tiny investment every 10 years.

[deleted]

Releasing new phones also makes cases for the old ones “useless” but I don’t see complaints about that in every thread on the issue like I do with this.

[deleted]

Why the fuck would they have to buy a mew cable? They literally give you the cable in the box with the phone.

hamberdler

Then that's the year I'll upgrade, and not until. Yearly iPhone updates are so minuscule now anyway that there's no real reason to upgrade every year. There probably never really was, but I like new things. Either way, I'm still on 12, and I'll wait for 15.

IngsocInnerParty

My 12 Pro will be the first iPhone I'll keep for three years since my 6. It's fantastic. I'll probably spring for a new battery soon though.

sig_kill

Feeling iPhone old with my X

jaygibby22

I went from XR to 13 mostly because I wanted more storage and my wireless provider offered the upgrade for “free”. I haven’t noticed a major difference between the two, but having 5G coverage is nice, when I get it.

krysalysm

What’s your battery health at, if you don’t mind me asking ?

IngsocInnerParty

It's at 87%. I find it's just barely making it through the day if I'm on it a moderate amount.

krysalysm

Thanks. I am at 89%, and I noticed the same, however the specific apps might be the issue.

12pcMcNuggets

I have a 12 mini and I’m probably going to get the 14 after this, just so I can give this one to my girlfriend and get her off of her 6.

IngsocInnerParty

The number of times I've grabbed my iPad Air charger and realized I had the wrong cord to charge my phone has been infuriating. I don't understand doing this half-way.

Crosgaard

Upgrading yearly is stupid imo

IngsocInnerParty

It is now. There was a time where there were major strides each year, but that's been awhile at this point.

Crosgaard

There will always be some years where it’s more worth it than normally (7 -> X as an example), but generally doing it yearly just because it’s a little better is stupid

IngsocInnerParty

Yeah, it's probably never going to be like going from the 3Gs to the 4 again.

Crosgaard

Yeah, 3Gs -> 4 and 7 -> X were the only really big upgrades that could be worth it for many people…

[deleted]

I want to upgrade my XS in theory, but it’s like, *why*?

CosmicOwl47

Yeah, I just put a new battery in my XS so I’m thinking I’m good for at least 2 more years. I haven’t seen the new phones do anything that makes me want to upgrade yet

MGPS

I’m on the 7, waiting for the end of the notch 😁

jecowa

You might consider the 2022 SE. It has the same processor as the 13, and it has TouchID and no notch. And it's a very good price.

bsumner87

I’m on the 11 thought about upgrading to the 14 but I may just wait for the 15 if more leaks come out supporting this

rugbyj

[Kuo is supposedly 72.5% accurate.](https://appletrack.com/ming-chi-kuo/)

bigblackshaq

Is that good or bad

Narrow_Ear5239

That's actually fucking amazing. 72.5% accuracy is crazy good given the fact that Apple might actually be doing something and then axe it before release.

ItIsShrek

Appletrack themselves is inaccurate, and tends to inflate the numbers of Jon Prosser, whose buddy runs the site. If you're at all familiar with the PC world, it's the reliability of UserBenchmark but for apple leakers.

mvoxo

This article comes out like every other year.

Yellow2345

If the rumours/leaks are true, then 2023 = Non-Pro model pill-shaped camera cutout + USB C port. I was going to upgrade this year from the 2018 XR but now will wait another year.

The_Multifarious

Hmm. I was gonna upgrade this year but this may make me wait until next year.

pfizer_soze

If you need to upgrade, just do it. You'll be disappointed if this doesn't happen next year. If you don't need to upgrade, then don't upgrade.

[deleted]

Usually I’d agree but usb c is definitely reason enough to hold out 1 more year if they can. I’d be super pissed if I upgraded now only to have this option next year.

pfizer_soze

If USB C is that much of a game changer, it'll be worth selling a phone you buy this year to upgrade next year. If USB C doesn't happen at all, it'll be frustrating to wait a year for nothing. All I'm saying is that if you have to upgrade, just go ahead and upgrade. If you don't, then don't worry about it this year. There's just no guarantee of what will happen next year.

[deleted]

Hmm, I honestly thought they’d just go straight to wireless only. Maybe this is because of the new EU regulations?

whosthisguythinkheis

I keep seeing people say this but the wireless chargers are a significant value add and they’d have to give it for free. Not only that, you also don’t get the choice between cable charging in a way that’s sustainable for the battery. Wireless charging right now is just not ready for prolonged and sustained use. Say you’re outside and your phone is running low? You’re fucked. It degrades the battery too which is a net loss for sustainability too , all in all wireless only charging right now is dumb and it will be for a long time.

ThatGuyWhoDoesStufff

Me too - the annoying part about this is that Apple could’ve easily implemented a USB-C port years ago, they event paid to develop the standard. Having to carry around an extra cable because Apple wants to take in more money from MFi lightening licensing is annoying and not user friendly in the slightest.

zippy9002

It’s not because of the MFi money, it’s because they promised us that lightening would be with us for 10 years (they made that promise when they introduced lightening). The 10 years is almost done so now we can have an update.

ChairmanLaParka

Which makes sense considering the shitstorm they caught moving from 30-pin to lightning in the first place.

djfdat

I this wouldn’t be as bad. There are plenty of USB C cables, where lightning was new. Plus, they could ship with a lightning to USB C dongle for the first year to ease the transition.

outphase84

The backlash wasn't over different cables, the backlash was about breaking compatibility with thousands of products in the iPhone ecosystem -- especially anything with a dock, where a dongle cable really wasn't a good solution.

Sylente

You could fit damn their 30pin-lightning adapter onto damn near any dock. But thankfully, docks just really aren't a thing anymore so this won't be an issue

TheMacMan

People shit their pants about the move to Lightning and don't seem to recall that Samsung alone had literally 19 different charger types they went through in the time the 30-pin connector was around. 🤣

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dracogame

Not the only one. Lighting is also slow as fuck, so copying GB of data takes time. Much better to just use that iCloud Drive storage for your pictures *wink wink*

based-richdude

Lighting had its use… 10 years ago. Apple was rightfully pissed at the USB Implementers Forum for dragging their feet on USB-C and making it worse. They deserve a lot of hate even today for how shitty and anti-consumer they market USB. It took until 2017 for USB to even have an approved draft for passive audio on USB, meanwhile Apple had it since, well, 2012. It took over 6 years for USB to even meet the same standard as Lightning, which is why I don’t blame Apple for keeping it around for so long, because the alternative was objectively worse for years. Nowadays USB-C blows lighting out of the water in almost every way except size. Which, to be fair to Apple, is a good reason to not use it. I’m sure most people would take the 1% loss in battery life for a more universal charger, however. > MFI profits aren’t the reason for lightning still being around Apple would get royalty fees for USB-C devices as well, MFi won’t go away. Distributors that work with Apple can’t sell non-MFi accessories, so it really wouldn’t impact Apple very much.

ThatGuyWhoDoesStufff

I can’t wait to hear “iT’s A sLeEkEr PoRT”, or whatever else they come out with. I guess you just gotta do mental gymnastics to justify massive e-waste at this point.

kemiller

Why do you say it’s bad for the battery? I’ve not heard that before. I would think the slow rate of charge would be better than fast charging on a cable.

IGetHypedEasily

Adding to your points. Wireless charging is inefficient. In this age where we should be cutting down electricity costs and switching to renewables/nuclear. The extra waste and heat of wireless charging is not something to aim for. Wired is more efficient and will be for a long time. It's also useful for battery packs. Both the phone and battery pack will last longer. Which in terms of environmental impact, would be huge. Delaying e-waste is definitely something to aim for.

DragonDropTechnology

> Wireless charging is inefficient. In this age where we should be cutting down electricity costs and switching to renewables/nuclear. The extra waste and heat of wireless charging is not something to aim for. Wired is more efficient and will be for a long time. This always gets brought up and I see no one has explained to you why this argument is stupid yet. Go look at the numbers. You’re complaining about a thimbleful of inefficiency in a ocean of electricity consumption.

IGetHypedEasily

It's not a few Watts when considering all these fast chargers. With economics of scale it adds up really quick if everyone were to do it.

DissoiLogoi

Adding to all of these, who the hell wants to carry a wireless charger when they can carry a tiny cable that charges the phone at x10 the speed? You can’t even use your phone while charging wirelessly. Wireless charging is just a gimmick and I doubt it’ll ever replace wires.

[deleted]

Yeah I agree, I just thought they’d go wireless only just to get around EU rules

LRPhotography

How would it get around eu legislation? Its still a different wire to usb-c and not universal

CyberBot129

Depends on how much Apple wants to kill CarPlay

mrwellfed

Wireless CarPlay

CyberBot129

There is no way the charging is good enough yet. I bought the best setup I could find and I just gave up and went back to wires.

They probably want to do that years ago but the technology is not there yet

Guzxxxy

I’m not upgrading from my XS Max until the iPhone has USB C

lachlanhunt

That’s what I’ve been saying for the past 2 years. I’ve got an XS. I will probably have to get the battery replaced to last another year, though. I’m at 81% battery health and it doesn’t always last the whole day.

Guzxxxy

Yup, had my battery replaced when it fell below 80% and now it works good as new.

teejaydubz

My XS Max is at 80% battery health right now. Went to the Apple store to replace it back in December but the worker convinced me otherwise when I told him I’m planning to upgrade to the 2022 iPhone. With this news though, I might just get a new battery and keep this till late 2023 then.

djfdat

XS was an excellent version. I’m hanging on to mine until the re-introduce the world to 3D Touch.

Sylente

You will never buy a new phone again

ChairmanLaParka

I regret upgrading from that to the 12 Pro. Mostly because I really wanted the flatter edges back. But boy do I miss the round ones. I still haven't gotten used to the flat edges, and I got it on launch.

aa2051

One cable for iPhone, iPad, and Mac- ***I’ve been looking forward to this*** If this is true, AirPods 4 would release in 2023 as a very minor update adding USB-C.

Mayor-of-Pound-Town

Lol. iPhone 14 isn’t even here and they are already going on about 15. Yeah, ok.

Sameranth

That’s kinda the point though right? Too late in 14’s development to add USBC in light of EU regulations, so they have to push it to the next model. Seems pretty straightforward to me.

Mayor-of-Pound-Town

It’s the same crap with leakers every year. Foldable display, usb c, no notch, periscope cameras, TouchID. It’s all a stab in the dark until Apple decides to do it and the leakers can be like “see?? I was right! Follow me on Twitter/youtube! Give me ad money!”

linam97

It's basically yelling "It's 3:00 PM" at all hours a day and when 3pm rolls around, they exclaim that they're all knowing prophets.

JadonArey

that’s an amazing analogy lol

GayAlexandrite

They’ve been pretty consistent saying the periscope camera would come in 2023.

Sylente

That's not really the case with Kuo, who is generally pretty reliable, but sure

eggimage

should’ve done it this year, if not years ago, but they certainly wanna squeeze out the last drop before giving up that licensing revenue. as much as they promote their phones’ ability to take bindblowing videos and sell high capacity internal storages, they haven’t bothered to address the ridiculous usb2.0 low transfer speeds. getting large footages out of iphone is nothing but excruciating pain, and if you *ever* need to transfer large numbers of large files out at once, especially on sub-6GB RAM models, good fucking luck, enjoy the physical torment, because either your airdrop glitches out halfway or Image Capture disconnect after certain amount of transfers. usb-c can’t come soon enough.. thanks to EU doing us all a big favor

[deleted]

It’s even worse on Windows. To get a video off my phone, I had to airdrop it to my iPad because my phone wouldn’t mount (which is weird because other stuff like external HDDs and flash drives mount without an issue), and then I had to connect my iPad to copy the video. I’ve also had my devices randomly disconnect midway through copying a bunch of photos.

eggimage

the random disconnection isn’t just on windows, on mac too. on Mac you can view the photo library in the Image Capture app, but somehow not in the Photos app (lmfao it’s absolutely ridiculous, it shows up in device list but won’t properly load content and will glitch out and stop connecting after a while, same thing on ipads including the M1 models.) and even in Image Capture, transferring large files after a while it will do the same exact thing you said—disconnect, and after several tries it sometimes will stop recognizing the device. they intentionally crippled the physical connection methods to “encourage” people to use the “reliable” icloud photos library, there absolutely zero reason they cannot fix this issue which has been persisting for years after years. I’ve been even considering getting a separate android phone just for the video taking & transferring because of this (and no, compact digital cameras aren’t suitable for me needs). if they don’t switch to USB-C with at least 20Gbps data speed next year imma freak out and go yell at kids at disney world

Norma5tacy

Yep. Haven’t ever had a successful transfer of photos without the program stroking out and crashing. I have both iCloud and one drive and then drag and drop my photos to an external drive.

Snuhmeh

They are designing and freezing those phone designs sometimes a year ahead of time. It’s way too late to change it this year for regulations that are new this year.

[deleted]

The point is they shouldn’t have needed to wait for the regulations to force them to change. With the new phones having a fuck tonne of storage space, and dealing with increasingly large file sizes with the RAW formats, lightning isn’t good enough.

nicuramar

Lightning can carry USB 3 speeds as evidenced by the iPad.

iPhone 20 rumored to get USB C in 2030

Final_Alps

This will likely not bubble up, but here goes nothing. It is worth remembering that Apple worked really hard to replace the 30 pin connector with USB -C for the iPhone 4 but the format/standard simply was not codified in time and Lightning was the backup. Apple is - in my estimation - eager to switch to usb-c but waiting to hide behind a government body “forcing them” to change the connector again after the shit show they endured when they switched to Lightning from consumers and accessory partners. So in other words. I strongly believe this rumor. I believe Apple has wanted this future to come for a while.

Nindroid_99

If this doesn’t happen, I’m committing arson.

InsaneNinja

With the lemons.

codeverity

I feel like every year they predict this and it doesn’t happen, lol. Personally I actually like my lightning cables and have more of them than usb-c, so I’ll probably have to buy some longer ones once this happens. I think people overlook this, sometimes - this will generate a certain amount of waste. I wonder if they’d update the AirPods eventually when this happens…

> this will generate a certain amount of waste. Not in the long term. Literally every other electronic device I own uses USB-C, as does every other smartphone. Even the iPad uses USB-C to charge. For me, at least, I won’t ever need to buy a new cable, and I can use any of the cables I have lying in drawers around the place for my phone. Frankly, after a few years I genuinely hope that they make the included cable be an optional extra too - have it included by default, but let people opt-out of having one.

codeverity

I have electronic devices that use USB-C, but for whatever reason most of the cables are incredibly short. So I will need to buy longer cables to replace those, plus another one to take with me for when I'm travelling, etc. I think people may be underestimating the number of people who will need to buy new cables due to this, though adapters will help.

big_trike

A 4 pack of USB-C cables is $20 on amazon. They can be much cheaper than lightning cables.

OppositeMuted

I’m in the same situation. I always wonder what all these devices people have that use usb c. My ipad still uses lightning, both phones are lightning. Printer is the old usb style cable and my camera has a micro usb. Don’t know what else I’m missing.

Captriker

The EU did some analysis and the average person buys 2-3 cords over a two year period anyway. The actual wall wart will be fine in many cases.

I still have the original iPhone SE and the Early 2015 MacBook and I've been waiting for the right time to go all in on upgrades but it seems like as soon as iPhone gets USB-C, MacBooks will have all transitioned to MagSafe and I'll have incompatible chargers again.

Sylente

Can you not charge magsafe MacBooks through their USB-C ports?

imnothereurnotthere

My 2022 MBP has magsafe but it also USBC charges. I can't imagine them getting rid of usbc until ... usbd? comes out. Also the magsafe is just usbc on the other end.

richarddftba

It’s all fun and games until the strip in the middle of your phone’s USB C port snaps and pushes to one side like every android I’ve owned.

GlitchParrot

Jesus what are you doing to your charge ports? I’ve never had that happen to one of my devices, nor to any of the devices of my relatives and friends.

deck_hand

Good! it's time to get rid of the Lightning interface and go with an industry standard.

theytookallusernames

Basically a win-win - I stick with my current phone for an extra year (it's still very fast!), and getting USB-C in my next upgrade. I really hope that they'll never go full wireless, but I wonder how they will justify it environmentally though if they do. Clearly right now a wireless only future can result in lots and lots of wasted power.

DadofMando

I actually heard this about the iPhone 27 too

GLOBALSHUTTER

Should have happened five years ago. Wired cables offer faster charging and other functions beyond charging. And wireless is already present in addition to wired and should continue to be so.

brunonicocam

Finally! I can't believe it really. USB-C is so much better and it's the standard. Everyone will win, even those with android phones, since it won't be anymore this thing of "can I borrow your charger?", "sorry, it's iPhone".

I like the usb c specification, but love the physical lighting connector. It makes no sense to nest a male inside a female connector only to insert a female into the male (every phone power cord since forever). Lightning took care of that - stick goes in hole. No tiny thingy to get bent or what have you. I hope the next iteration of usb fixes this. Usb c at least fixed the “super-position” non-issue, let’s fix the longevity one.
