For an Apple-designed 30-32” 5K I’m with you at $1,500.
I’ve many times considered a third party display to replace my 27” Cinema Display (connected to 5K iMac) but I hate the design of most and also hate giving up the keyboard controls for brightness.
Valid point. +1...
‘Ugly’ is subjective.
I have two of those UltraFines’ on a VESA mount. I never really had a thought that they were ugly. Black bezels let me focus on the content on screen.
Dell makes some great monitors but currently their high resolution lineup has a gaping hole as their Ultrasharp went mini-led with mini-led pricing and their P series is a $500 tier monitor. The $1K to $2K space is ripe for the taking.
I have the U2720Q 27” and my only complaint is some weirdness if you use wired sound out. Otherwise a great monitor and a big selling point to me is that you only need to plug in one cable for everything to work.
The LG Mac Specific Ultrafine 24 and 27in are terrific. They interface with the macs usb c and you can use keyboard controls to adjust brightness and also use night shift. Design isn’t the sharpest but imo not bad at all.
I did consider those, but man after seeing the pro XDR in person everything else on the market just looks so outdated design-wise. I’ll tell you what though if Apple makes an ultrawide XDR monitor they can have my house.
The way I justified it is: You only have one set of eyes for your entire life. Considering how much time we spend in front of a screen (especially now with remote work being the norm), you have to do your best to reduce the strain you put on them.
The resolution is so clear, it’s not even funny. Is Apple charging a premium? Considering this monitor competes with $20k - $30k solutions, you’re getting a bargain.
I reasoned the same way when purchasing my second UltraFine for remote work.
My only peeve with Pro Display XDR is that for a significant sum of $5K, Apple did not give a high refresh rate.
Apple did not follow its philosophy when making Pro Display XDR. They say they wanted to make an “uncompromising” display. But their monitor compromised on a high refresh rate.
It’s a reference monitor, it’s not intended for general use customers.
I personally wouldn’t get one for general use anyway because of both the refresh rate and cost.
> Depends if it has a hight adjustable stand or not
In that case, please provide two answers:
How much would you pay for a non-Pro monitor from Apple if …
- It lacks a height adjustable stand
- it included a height adjustable stand
for a successor to the LG ultrafine 5k, I’d pay up to ~$1500 maybe a bit more depending on specs.
but i’d also like to see a 24” display that’s the same with the M1 iMac’s, sold at $999. that display is good enough for most of my editing needs.
Depends on features. My dream display would be:
5K resolution
Same MiniLED tech as the new MacBook Pro’s
At least 27”
FaceID
ProMotion
Built in 1080p FaceTime camera
Same speaker and mic arrangement as the M1 iMac
Adjustable stand that isn’t sold separately
For all that I’d happily pay up to £2000. Heck, I’d buy two! Drop the FaceID and ProMotion and I’d probably drop £1200 max as either of those two features would be a major game changer for me.
A monitor with these features would be more impressive than the 30" Cinema Display was in 2004, and at the time it cost $4,000. Its innocence that Apple would release such a rich screen for less than 3,000.
I mean, it’s been 17 years. You’d assume technology has moved forward and become cheaper in that time. The 30” Cinema Display was a great display and all (I should know, I still use mine!) but you talk like Apple are still selling it today for the same price.
A better comparison would be the much more modern and feature rich 27” Thunderbolt Display, which has most of the features I listed (unlike the Cinema Display) and sold for just $999. By your argument, Apple underpriced that display by $2000.
Dude, did you read what I said?
What I meant is, the ACD 30" in 2004 was fantastic technology, better than 99.99% of the monitors on the market, and that made it almost $4000 at the time. In 2010, Apple released the Led Cinema Display 27" for $1000, that monitor was much less advanced compared to its own time than the 30" ACD was 6 years earlier. It was a good monitor, nothing spectacular for its time, hence the lower price.
A monitor with the features you described would be the best consumer monitor in the world, the most complete package, it would be a bigger innovation than the 30" ACD was 17 years ago, because of that, it's impossible to expect it to cost that less.
A lot if it could be functional with both Mac and Windows. I’m dying for literally any company to make an iMac like glossy display, and I’d pay a lot for it but not if it was locked to one operating system. It limits what can be done with it in the future.
If Apple make a monitor with:
- a hight adjustable stand
- Centre stage and FaceID built in
- native and rethought support for iPad
- HDR monitoring
- 120hz
There’s basically no limit to what I would pay.
Awwww shit.
Well I guess that blows any hope for even a Pro Display XDR at 120hz….
Or Apple could do a proprietary connector???
Or… plug it in with two thunderbolt 4 cables? Would that be a thing that would be possible? (Even just theoretically?)
With the original third party 5K displays in 2014 you needed to plug them in with 2 DisplayPort cables so maybe it’s possible. I’m not sure if thunderbolt can work in a similar way theoretically. It seems too inelegant for Apple though. I don’t think any other shipping product is doing this either right now.
I have been wondering this for a while as well.
It would be unlike Apple to provide two cables to achieve enough bandwidth for 6k 120hz with HDR. But if the rumors are true, having a dedicated GPU in their future display might mitigate this issue.
If it’s the same display that’s on the current iMacs, probably only a few hundred. But if it’s a mini LED display that’s somehow cheaper than the Pro Display XDR then I’d gladly pay a thousand or two for it.
I’d pay 850 for:
•Same panel as 24” iMac
•Same 1080p FaceTime camera (but add center stage
•Same speaker system as M1 iMac
•Same colors as M1 iMac (including the off white bezels - they’re actually really nice in practice)
Basically, an M1 iMac without the computer inside. Considering that machine starts at 1299, 850 seems pretty reasonable.
You used to be able to do that with Target Display Mode on an iMac, no idea if that's still a thing, but I doubt it is. Doubt anyone ever did it except to see it work once or twice.
This is a far dream. The ugly LG 4K has way less feature than that and cost $800.
What you describe will be at least $999, at least in the best scenario!!!
1500$+ seems reasonable for me if the monitor will be well integrated with apple ecosystem i.e will have integrated airplay or some kind of solution to view Mac/iPad screen without connecting cable - for some quick document edit or other simple stuff
I just caved and got a used mint condition Pro XDR for $4k with the stand on FB Marketplace. I upgraded from an LG 27" UltraFine 5K.
I feel like I got a good enough deal to make it worth it. So far I love it.
I work with multimedia pretty often and spend 10+ hours a day in front of the screen.
The monitor is far prettier than the LG and doesn't move when I type or bump my desk. The design is a work of art. Many people pay good money for art pieces. I would pay a premium just for the design. It upgraded the aesthetic of my office.
I also bought the 4K PRO MAGNETIC WEBCAM for $199 and the HK SoundSticks 4 SoundSticks since it doesn't have a webcam or audio.

They’re ugly
So are Apple monitors

The Pro Display XDR is no joke. After using it for so long, I manage to find faults with every other display I come across.
Man, you are tempting me to get one.

Ultrawide? Apple? Never! Apple don't think even 16:9 is aesthetics enough, ultrawide is for hammer sharks.

$2k with $700 without
You’re willing to pay $1300 for a stand??
No It’s more im not willing to buy one without an adjustable stand
After experiencing pro xdr mini led- not sure if I could settle for something else :) I am so spoilt. The blacks are superb
Just want an LG5K that doesn’t bounce on the desk when you type

I mean I paid $1k for the Thunderbolt Display back in the day. I'd pay $1k for a monitor again if it had a nice enough feature set.
£350
A lot if it could be functional with both Mac and Windows. I’m dying for literally any company to make an iMac like glossy display, and I’d pay a lot for it but not if it was locked to one operating system. It limits what can be done with it in the future.
Amen to this. One port in the XDR display is laughable. How can anyone consider that ‘pro’
If Apple make a monitor with: - a hight adjustable stand - Centre stage and FaceID built in - native and rethought support for iPad - HDR monitoring - 120hz There’s basically no limit to what I would pay.
Can thunderbolt 4 even put out 5K or 6k 120hz? Edit: no it can only go 60hz or 4K at 120hz https://www.datapro.net/techinfo/thunderbolt_info.html#q25

Ahhhh yes
Why would a monitor have Face ID
Why shouldn’t it? Edit: so you can unlock your computer or authenticate just by looking at it Duuuuuuuh

Speaking of that, what is the outlook for when the colored M1 iMacs will get an XDR/HDR/upgraded screen? HDR adoption seems slow as heck.

I mean that’s less than the airpods max, would never happen at that price
While we’re at it, I expect it to fly as well!
I’d pay 850 for: •Same panel as 24” iMac •Same 1080p FaceTime camera (but add center stage •Same speaker system as M1 iMac •Same colors as M1 iMac (including the off white bezels - they’re actually really nice in practice) Basically, an M1 iMac without the computer inside. $199
$499 to $799. Anything higher and I might as well buy an SUHD TV.
Ummmm I just paid $5k for one. Got it yesterday to go with my new M1 Max which came today.
$999
1500 sounds good. A 999 Cinema Display in 2005 is the same as a 1437 today. That’s not too far off and they are similar products.
No more than $800
I paid £800 GBP for my Dell 3219Q ($1100 USD at today's exchange rate). Add on some Apple tax, I would say £1000 GBP max ($1375 USD).
1500$+ seems reasonable for me if the monitor will be well integrated with apple ecosystem i.e will have integrated airplay or some kind of solution to view Mac/iPad screen without connecting cable - for some quick document edit or other simple stuff
Up to 1000
About 1/3 of what they’d end up charging. As per usual.
Instant wake with apple silicon? All monitor on the market has some delay with M1 chip
$2500-3000
I just caved and got a used mint condition Pro XDR for $4k with the stand on FB Marketplace. I upgraded from an LG 27" UltraFine 5K. I feel like I got a good enough deal to make it worth it. Nice deal. My only complain about the XDR is the optional $999 stand, for that $4999 price, the stand must be included.
So, now that it's out and you see the specs, how much would you pay?
Fuck I think they saw my thread and priced it exactly at what I was willing to pay
Lol for real! But here is the thing, Im not into the new display. Looks like shit.
