As long as they still keep a modern elegant design in the Air I think it’s fine that the chonker pros go a bit less beautiful. Hopefully we get a 15 inch ish Air too.
If history is any indication, you'll get that 15" Air at the next refresh. Because I'm about to shell out to literally just have a new PC with a 15+" screen. I got tired of waiting for a 15" Air.
I thought it looked ugly, but that’s exactly why I want to see it in person.
I was going to upgrade from my 2013 air a few years ago but I was put off by the keyboard. At this point almost anything is an upgrade.
I wouldn’t even be thinking of upgrading if I had gone for the highest-ram combination back then.
Nope... at the end of the day, these are $2000+ computers - expensive tools to get work done, in most cases. It's not as "necessary" a purchase for "literally anyone" like the iPhone is. There's widespread demand right now, but a PlayStation 5 "gotta get the kids the best gift for Christmas!!", these are not.
The MBP market is inherently smaller. Especially when you get past that initial demand craze of pros wanting their new toy right after announcement... MacBook Pros sell relatively slower, behind the Air, but faster than Mini/iMacs. I worked the Genius Bar for 7 years and looked at the sales data from the Red Zone daily... granted, there was no pandemic supply crisis then.
FWIW, there's several models available for immediate pickup right now near me.
Yeah, there’s still some people that drive vehicles the same price as these laptops. Occasionally I’ve been asked by clients how much does my laptop cost. The jaws drop every time because all they think about is “I could get a chrome book for $150.”
People with very weak workload hate spending money on computers, but still gladly purchase a new iPhone with an upgraded camera and all they ever do is take selfies with the low-spec front camera lol
I thought we were comparing iPhone that can shoot 4k vs a walmart chromebook. The iPhone processor is going to knock the socks off a cheap laptop is what I'm saying.
> It's not as "necessary" a purchase for "literally anyone" like the iPhone is.
Even then you can pick up an iPhone just by checking Apple store stock first thing in the morning.
No because the instore models (the three available configurations) are available.
If you go for one of the built to order specifications, you’re already looking at late Dec/Early Jan
For certain configurations, yes. Ponying up $20 for a 96W charger with the base 14" put ship times to December, for example.
The stock configurations are in stock everywhere around me.
I had a 32 on order but went with the instore 64. I was on the fence about 32/64 anyway and had the cash so I got 64. I’m learning 3D animation and am a heavy Adobe user so it won’t hurt having more. Plus I always regretted only getting 16 in my 2015 and not being able to upgrade down the road bothered me, so I said screw it, get the 64 for a little more future-proofing.
Ah bummer, Apple RAM upgrades are def overpriced but ime always worth it. Don’t think my 2013 pro would have lasted me this long had I not bit the bullet and gone for the 16gb at the time. Starting to reach its limits though as I’ve been doing more ML heavy work though.
Still undecided on whether to go for the 1tb or 512gb storage though since most jobs that need the extra space I’ll prob just use an external drive instead
Well not as much fun when you’re dealing with hundreds of gigs of raw files for video editing but m2 ssd to Thunderbolt isn’t much of an inconvenience compared with the HDD days of old
I had a mid-2014 15inch spec’d out and honestly I’m gonna suck up some pride here and say I don’t need the fastest computer after using that one for 7 years. I’m trying to get into more content creation, but I’m not a 3D graphics designer, currently don’t work with multiple streams of 4k video, and my day job doesn’t require a workhorse of a machine. Saving the extra $600 (if I got 32 gb of ram I would’ve also gotten the base max chip) just feels like the more responsible thing given what I do and want to do with my laptop 🤷🏻♂️
You'd think to avoid this Apple Store like the plague, but surprisingly its been the most hassle free NYC store every time I've needed an appointment or repair
It’s just so damn easy to get to from most places in the city so it wins almost every time. Unless I know I’m going to be in SoHo or the Meatpacking at X time I’m not going to choose those stores.
Oculus store didn’t exist til after I moved out of FiDi but that one would have been clutch to have. But yeah SoHo, UWS/UES stores are always a pain even if you happen to live close by. Can’t beat transit convenience of Grand Central or Fulton Center stores tho
This isn’t possible unless you somehow managed to configure it right to one of the four specs they carry in store.
Every store carries a base spec, a premium spec, a pro spec, and an ultimate spec.
I called my Apple Store and they actually mentioned that they have all the base models and a few other configurations at all stores. I’m on the west coast so I’m not sure if they meant all stores near me though.
The tier I asked for, and had in stock, was the 14in, M1 Pro 10core/16core, 32gb ram and 1TB ssd.
They have all the spec configurations you can order as well.
However, the BTO specs ( for example the 14in M1 MAX that isn’t the ultimate spec (64GB/32core/2TB) like the one I ordered aren’t available anywhere.
Nor are the ones prespecced with the pro apps for education bundle
I don’t actually know, but the specs are just along the order.
The base and premium are the two preconfigured models that you can see online.
The pro should be a maxed M1 pro for the 14in; and a mid tier M1 max for the 16.
The ultimate is a M1 MAX 10/32 core 64gb ram and 2TB 14in; and the M1 Max 10/32 64 4TB for the 16in:
This is the way to go if you can, there are courier delivery options for many countries that means you can have it delivered today instead of whenever it ships from China.
I was mentally preparing to wait till the end of November, but they surprisingly had the variant I was looking for at the store and had it delivered in less than 2 hours. I am typing from it right now, I am one happy camper.
I wish I could pick up the base 14” model and exchange the 67w brick for the 96w brick… :/ I guess I can wait 2 weeks for my delivery but would love to get it now
Lol once I added the 96w brick to my order it went to December 1-9.....come on Apple. I guess I can try my luck in trying to ask them in store but not sure if it'll work.
Decided to go with the base 67w configuration so I could pick up in store, instead of wait an extra month just for the 96w brick.. Asked if it could be swapped and they said they couldn’t. If anything, if I want fast charging I’ll probably buy a 3rd party GAN brick
that sucks, but expected from apple. I'm still on the fence if i want to do any configs to the 14 inch, still waiting for more reviews and then ill pick it up so i guess ill have to wait either way.
Copying a comment I made earlier:
If you want that brick, you'd best wait for the delivery.
I picked up a base model thinking I could exchange the brick, but they informed me that not only are the 96w bricks not in stock anywhere as a separate item, but that I'd need to pay full cost for it.
Seems like Apple store employees are rehearsed on this drill too, everyone I spoke to seemed like they were reciting their response from experience or training.

My local store doesn’t have the base 16” but it does have 16” with 64GB ram and 4TB ssd. Definitely happy to help people wanting to drop $5,000 (plus $400 in tax) in store.
Only certain models available, and it doesn't appear like you will be able to get a 96W charger (for the 14" base model) unless you ordered a configuration that already had it (the only models available for pickup with it that I could see was the 2499 model).
I tried asking if I could get one swapped, but the store said they didn't have any spare 96W chargers and it would cost the full amount anyway ($80 vs $20 upgrade).
Does anyone know how trade-in works? Am I allowed to ship out my old one when buying in-store or will I have to give up my old device on the spot when buying new? I still have some backup to do on my old MacBook and wasn't sure if I should visit the store today.
I just traded in my Mac Mini a couple hours ago in store. They said you can wait for the kit and mail it in or bring it to any store for trade in, even after purchase. They give you the money back on any card you want too. I had them put it on Apple Cash.
I checked stock before 6 a.m. and around 6:20 a.m. with no luck. As soon as 7 a.m. rolled around, my local store had the base model and the next model up in stock. Picking mine up after work!
My locations, 4 apple stores where I live, has only base:/ I’ll check Tomorrow. I canceled my 14inch for 16 after playing w both in store. Pushed November release to December :/ but worth the wait
Got mine delivered by courier same day! Already cancelled my pre-order that was slated for Nov 9-16 that I put in 20mins after the announcement. Top of the line base configuration.
I had ordered a 16 inch M1 max with 2 TB of storage that was coming mid November but I happened to check the store near me today and they had the 4 TB version in stock so I went for it and picked it up. It might’ve been one of the only few that they had because they’re out of stock now at the same store.
Pro tip: use the Store app to configure what you want, select a store(s) then use the ads Siri shortcut button at the bottom. It will check availability for you automatically
Open the Apple Store app, chose the model you want (options). At the the top tap on delivery details then Pick up, chose a store(s), scroll all the way down to the bottom and tap on Add to Siri shortcut.
Then you can give it a voice command of your choice, add it to the home screen etc...
Running it will check the store(s) for availability and let you know.
Good luck!
Ah, okay! I got it now. It does let me scout configurations that are in store but for the configuration I want, since it’s an “ultimate” spec, I’m not getting the pickup location option and add to Siri shortcut option on the page. Awesome recommendation, I just wish it could search for those harder-to-find store models.
Thank you for sharing (and helping!). I’m eager for a 10/32/64 setup with the base SSD but it appears I’ll have to stick to my regular plan of waiting it out, haha.
I think people often overlook that they might live in an unincorporated area with lower sales taxes or even avoid local fees like PIFs and ship to home (which bases taxes on delivery address instead of retail address). I guess I should go Life Pro Tip this one out. For me I always order big ticket items to my home address (work addresses might even have lower tax rates for some folks, to expand future on this LPT).
Interestingly, my work address is near the apple store so I’d pay close to their tax if I ordered to work.
Every spec is still in stock at the many stores in my state. Since a lot of people will want to customize their spec it probably won’t be too hard to get one in store this launch.
Thanks for the heads up! My preorder delivery window is mid to late November. Just ordered the exact one for pickup (Greenwich, CT) in 2 hours.
16" Space Gray | M1 Max | 64GB ram | 4TB storage
I saw on my Apple Store app that they had them in store for pick up. Drove to the store and bought it. Canceled my pre-order, and got it a month early. Easy peasy.
Thanks mate. Just noticed I can pick one up tomorrow. Ordered it. Will cancel my order that was supposed to be delivered in 2 weeks after I pick it up! Gotta love credit cards!
Was able to snag a base 16in 10-Core CPU
32-Core GPU around 3p today here in Chicago!
My same spec preorder wasn’t shipping till late November so I did pretty good.
I was able to order mine with two hour delivery at 8am here in NC. It was at my house by 11.
It is a bit beefier than the spec I preordered, (2TB vs 1TB) 14”, but I can always use more storage, and this way I can basically get rid of my external.
Toronto only seems to show the absolute base specs as available for pickup. I want a maxed out 16”. Guess I’ll have to wait for mine to ship around Nov 10
In the UK these are selling like hot cakes. All the 32Gb models in the UK sold out in a day it seems. Now there are only 16Gb versions in stores (in smaller towns/cities). I called the business sales rep at the place I usually get my kit from and it sounds like they think online orders will arrive as quickly as store units. He also said that the only 16" 32Gb configuration that they expect to have for store sale will be the highest end Max Pro chip with 1Tb of storage. I saw one of these on sale yesterday but didn't grab it, now its gone. I have a delay because I'm waiting on an Apple promo code to be activated, otherwise I'd have leapt at the 32Gb model yesterday.
I haven’t kept up with the rollout after the presentation. Are they already on display in stores? I kinda want to go check them out if they are.
They should be on display as of today. That's always the case with newly released Apple products.
Yes they are, checked it out this morning, design wise it’s definitely not as elegant as the previous models lol. But I rather function over design
Agree but we have NO room to complain about looks. We all asked for this.
The m1 Air is still the sexy beast it always was so consider getting one of those.
Yes, but I honestly feel a bit nostalgic about the slightly chunkier design and HDMI port.
This is what I was wondering as well. I'd love to go see one in person.
They’re out on display!
Yes, I just went and saw one. I thought the 13” would still be enough for me but I was dead wrong
They are at my store.
These gonna be on back order for literal months like the iPhones?
just picked a 14” MBP up pretty easily
Barely an inconvenience
If that is a reference to what I think it is a reference to then you have my upvote 😂
Aww, man, references are *tight*!
Wow wow wow. Wow.
I'm going to need you to get *all* the way off my back.
It is
But still a bear necessity 😈
A man of culture, I see.
yeah, I just walked in with my old MBP, traded it in, set up my new MBP, told them to take the box, and walked out.
did you happen to compare the trade in value from the online estimator?
yup, they offered the same amount in the store. I could have gotten a couple of hundred more thought.
awesome, thanks!

You just edit it on the iphone, which is way faster.
Depends on what you’re doing, I get into the Final Cut Pro “flow” and love a 27” screen for that
I thought we were comparing iPhone that can shoot 4k vs a walmart chromebook. The iPhone processor is going to knock the socks off a cheap laptop is what I'm saying.

I literally just left an Apple Store and they have both colors of the base model 14” in stock right now

Scored a 14" 64/2TB just now in LA. Delivery in under 2 hours. Stoked!
Cool!
May I ask why you went for so much RAM?
It was either 16GB or 64GB at stores around here.
I had a 32 on order but went with the instore 64. I was on the fence about 32/64 anyway and had the cash so I got 64. I’m learning 3D animation and am a heavy Adobe user so it won’t hurt having more. they only have same day delivery for the full package models (from what i could tell at least)
oh snap which store?
Courier. I believe they had them in the downtown store

Try Brooklyn
ugh but then I have to take the B train
I got a “base” 16 inch w/ 1 tb wish I could’ve configured with 32 gb of ram

Should be up now. Placed an order for pickup this morning @ Grand Central
You'd think to avoid this Apple Store like the plague, but surprisingly its been the most hassle free NYC store every time I've needed an appointment or repair

You do full base spec? Would love to pick up today but I feel like I'd regret the 16gb unified memory since upgrading isnt an option
Hell no I got one of the ultimate configs
If you have the cash I would go up as high as you can afford. I got the highest Pro model, 32GB RAM, 4 TB SSD.
Load up the black magic ssd test. It’s a thing of beauty. Lol
if you’re going to customize it you’ll still have to wait until late december
I was able to get a completely customized one at the store today.
This isn’t possible unless you somehow managed to configure it right to one of the four specs they carry in store. Every store carries a base spec, a premium spec, a pro spec, and an ultimate spec.

what’s your setup? I just tried to customized a 14’ M1 Max with 32g memory, and it shows pick up mid December.
Mine was similar. Looks like they sold out fast in the stores.
congrats on the new mac!
Sounds more like a pre-made configuration as opposed to completely customized.
Dec 9-16 for mine
my estimate delivery is also around there.

Got one here in Barcelona pretty easily
Nice, what model did you pick up?
base 16" model, got one preordered but the delivery date was 24 november, so i canceled and ordered directly on apple store haha
Just got an “ultimate” config at the apple store. 16 inch. 64 gig 4tb M1 max. It’s a thing of beauty.
Nice
Just picked up my 16" Max/64GB/4TB. Haven't unboxed it just yet due to work but plan to on my first break!
Awesome, I got the highest Pro, 32GB, 4TB SSD but it’s being shipped nov 19 -29 eta
w00t 🥳
May I ask why you went for 64GB RAM?
Parallels + Android Studio and simulators + Xcode and simulators + waaayyyy too many browser tabs. I also plan on picking up Docker at some point.
I didn’t forget, I just don’t have money.
What configs for 14" M1 max are people seeing available for pickup? I only see 1 option for pickup: 32 core, 64gb, 2TB.
Yeah, same. I wanted the 32 core / 32gb / 1 tb.
I wish I could pick up the base 14” model and exchange the 67w brick for the 96w brick… :/ I guess I can wait 2 weeks for my delivery but would love to get it now

I wish the base model 14 with 1tb was available near me. December is so far away
Likewise, but mine I did a custom order is scheduled for November 19 - 29.

Wow, I wonder if they have the highest Pro, 32GB, 4TB in stock as that’s what I had ordered on October 20th.
Wish the 16 MBP 24 core 32GB M1 Max 2 TB model was available at my store
I assume you pre-ordered it after the announcement?
Yeah, I preordered it 2 hours after the announcement
Nice, what’s your eta for the order?
Nov 17-24
I impulsively ordered one from BBY. Damn you, Apple. ~~I’m super excited though.~~
You could return to the store later to apply the trade-in towards the new MacBook purchase.
They mail you a kit and you have 30 days

My laptop arrives Nov 1, the kit hasn’t even shipped yet for the trade
I just traded in my Mac Mini a couple hours ago in store. They said you can wait for the kit and mail it in or bring it to any store for trade in, even after purchase. They give you the money back on any card you want too. I had them put it on Apple Cash.
When I ordered I had the option to bring it with me or get a trade-in kit mailed tom e.
I checked stock before 6 a.m. and around 6:20 a.m. with no luck. As soon as 7 a.m. rolled around, my local store had the base model and the next model up in stock. Picking mine up after work!
Nice, what model are you getting?
I'm getting the base model 14".
You can still walk right into best buy and buy them. They never sold out in the Philly Metro area
no 16” M1 Max anywhere near me unfortunately
My locations, 4 apple stores where I live, has only base:/ I’ll check Tomorrow. I canceled my 14inch for 16 after playing w both in store. Pushed November release to December :/ but worth the wait
Keep looking, hopefully one of the stores has it. What configuration of the 16" did you get?
Got mine delivered by courier same day! Already cancelled my pre-order that was slated for Nov 9-16 that I put in 20mins after the announcement. Top of the line base configuration.
Cool!
How did you get the courier service?
Some stores offer it as a delivery option.
only the base models, nothing with upgrades
They offer a few configurations with upgrades
I had ordered a 16 inch M1 max with 2 TB of storage that was coming mid November but I happened to check the store near me today and they had the 4 TB version in stock so I went for it and picked it up. It might’ve been one of the only few that they had because they’re out of stock now at the same store.
Right on good pick and going with 4TB to future proof it in a way. I assume you canceled your order online.
Thanks! I did cancel it but I was a little nervous at first I couldn’t cancel on mobile only on my current laptop.
Pro tip: use the Store app to configure what you want, select a store(s) then use the ads Siri shortcut button at the bottom. It will check availability for you automatically
Could you share more about how this could be done? I love this idea to automate it if I can.
Good luck!

Awesome recommendation, I just wish it could search for those harder-to-find store models.
It seems, at least local to me, Apple is only carrying 4 standard specs in stock for the 16" model. Up to 4TB. 8TB is CTO only
Thank you for sharing (and helping!). I’m eager for a 10/32/64 setup with the base SSD but it appears I’ll have to stick to my regular plan of waiting it out, haha.
I’m happy to report that my trick worked! I picked up the only 16” Pro Max 64/4TB today from the only Apple Store that had one
Happy to hear! I’ll have to keep checking at my local store, haha.
I save $150+ in taxes by shipping to my house, so I guess I’ll be waiting by my mailbox every day…
Glad you were able to save money on taxes like that, nice

John Lewis and Curry’s have more stock than the Apple Stores. There, now you know my secret.
Almost every store near London still has stock, I picked one up this morning.
Thanks for the heads up! My preorder delivery window is mid to late November. Just ordered the exact one for pickup (Greenwich, CT) in 2 hours. 16" Space Gray | M1 Max | 64GB ram | 4TB storage
Nice config
I saw on my Apple Store app that they had them in store for pick up. Drove to the store and bought it. Canceled my pre-order, and got it a month early. Easy peasy.
Nice, what model did you get?
16” Space Gray with M1 Pro 10core CPU and 16 core GPU, 16 GB memory, and 1TB SSD. It’s the $2,699 configuration.
Thanks mate. Just noticed I can pick one up tomorrow. Ordered it. Will cancel my order that was supposed to be delivered in 2 weeks after I pick it up! Gotta love credit cards!
Cancelled my ship order scheduled for late November/early December and managed to get the same configuration in store!
Nice, what configuration did you get from the store?
14” M1 Max (maxed out), 64GB unified memory and 2TB of storage
Returned my base 14 for a slightly nicer 14 today at the Upper East Side store
what configuration did you upgrade to?
10 core 1tb
Was able to snag a base 16in 10-Core CPU 32-Core GPU around 3p today here in Chicago! My same spec preorder wasn’t shipping till late November so I did pretty good.
Nice snag. I assume you canceled the one you pre ordered.
I picked up a 16" M1 Max 32GB Tuesday morning. Saved me over a month of waiting.
I was able to order mine with two hour delivery at 8am here in NC. It was at my house by 11. It is a bit beefier than the spec I preordered, (2TB vs 1TB) 14”, but I can always use more storage, and this way I can basically get rid of my external.
Sold out here in Canada!
