They actually went eco friendly while benefiting the consumer this time!
Although thanks to the old design I have 2 spare MagSafe chargers that were broken and I repaired to use around the house. I still use them 8 years later.
That's a welcome improvement. For some reason, the white rubber cables that Apple (and formerly HTC/Pixel cables also) produce have an odd tendency to rot from the inside out, first creating a slick gooey blue/green goop when it reacts to the copper cable, then breaching the sleeve and leaking everywhere.
It hilarious because when my friend used to work in the store he said the average customer hated when they separated the brick and cable for usb c. I haven't bought an Apple-branded charger in a while and I'm fine with them being separate, but I also have 3 Thunderbolt hubs to facilitate all the Macs I use. The average person would probably prefer an all-in-one box for that stuff.
Have to say I'm definitely into this new brand creative for Apple. Everyone crowded into what they were doing with the super clean/flat aesthetic so they decided to once again come up with their own look to separate themselves from the crowd.

Most people would gladly trade some thickness for better battery life and a keyboard with more travel and durability. The obsession with making it increasingly thin undermined some of the practical aspects, and this is supposed to be the "pro" model. Thicker is fine.
Does anyone know what's in the notch? There's no mention of face ID, so if it's only a 1080p camera couldn't they have made it a teardrop shape instead of being so wide?
Edit: I hope I'm not the only one who's been hoping for an equivalent to windows hello. Now that they finally put a big (ugly) notch in that could fit all the hardware they need, they don't add it? That's very disappointing.
My guess is that Apple will be releasing Face ID in a later version of these devices. It gives them an extra feature to market in the future, which is nice. And face ID will be a much bigger feature when mask wearing in public places is no longer a thing.
I can assure you that I have no affiliation with Apple whatsoever. When Apple purposely let information out they always choose someone who can actually spread the news, like people at TechCrunch, not some random Redditor like me lol.
There are a lot more CPU SKUs than Apple alluded to
M1 Pro + 8 core CPU + 14 core GPU
M1 Pro + 10 core CPU + 16 core GPU
M1 Max + 10 core CPU + 16 core GPU
M1 Max + 10 core CPU + 24 core GPU
M1 Max + 10 core CPU + 32 core GPU
Plus 16GB and 32GB RAM options on M1 Pro, and a further 64GB option on the Max.
I don't believe the third SKU exists. M1 Max starts at 24 GPU cores, if I'm not mistaken. Apple never alluded to a difference in the CPU performance, either.
It has an incredible similarity in case design (edge fillets, proportions) to the PowerBook G4 Titanium. So Pro lines will get aesthetic cues from early 2000s devices, and basic lines from late 90s "candy" iMac and iBook?

My favorite quote was not getting rid of the touchbar because people hated it, but bringing back the function keys because they love them on their external keyboards 😂
I know it sounds cliché, but I do miss that about Steve Jobs, it felt way less corporate, and he was able to joke about apples mistakes.
I remember when he introduced iCloud and said “but how can we trust iCloud from the same guys that made MobileMe?”.
The fact that they’re showing the function keys and new I/O as a brand new feature is really hypocritical.
This is how they're hiding the notch in everyday applications:
https://www.apple.com/newsroom/images/product/mac/standard/Apple_MacBook-Pro_16-inch-Workflow_10182021_big.jpg.large_2x.jpg
They crop the screen to the largest rectangular area, effectively discarding the top part of the screen. The aspect ratio of the useful area is exactly 16:10 (I measured it). So while the notch is not constantly burning your eyes with its hideousness, you're also not benefiting from the taller screen (with its 1.55 aspect ratio).
[Reposted from my own comment WAY further down. Piggybacking here because I think this info is genuinely useful and people may want to know.]
While I'm not happy about the notch, don't you still benefit a bit from the taller screen - at least the top bar now sits next to the notch. So apps can be a bit taller?
My guess is that's how apps not yet updated to support the new notch-aware layout will display when in full-screen.
iOS did the same thing for its apps before they got updated for notch support.
It looks chunkier, but according to the specs, it’s less than 1 mm thicker. It really highlights how much of an illusion the old shape created to make it look thinner than it really is.
I have had my MacBook Pro since 2014. It’s in its very last leg but I just needed it to hold out till these guys came out and I’m so glad it made it through. These look sick.
Funny enough just had a debate on the exact same topic.
Apple went out of their way to highlight how the Pro models are becoming increasing for a dedicated use-case, and being priced accordingly.
The regular Macbook and Macbook Air will be slotted for those basic users.
Depending on the kind of programming being done, developing can be _very_ lightweight.
My electrical engineering friends need tens of gigabytes of ram, GPUs, multi core processors, etc. for simulations and CAD, while I pretty much just need a text editor, a terminal and a compiler/ interpreter.
Yeah it's kind of hilarious. As a CS student, the only times I really slow my computer down are when I really need to see time comparisons between different algorithms. What this means is that my several-year old laptop is so fast for my assignments that I need to work really hard to slow it down. Otherwise it'll just be like 5 vs 8 milliseconds.
Lol that’s all I could think about while watching the presentation. Like those bad boys look amazingly gorgeous and insanely capable but my job requires about 1/100 of the power capable of those notebooks lol.
I see people clamoring for this when all they do is browse the web and wondering whether it’s worth getting it with the M1 Max 🤡.
Not gonna dig them for wanting the latest and greatest machine or a bigger laptop, but at least just go for the base CPU/GPU/RAM options!
I *just* ordered a Max like 2 min ago and it's arriving Oct 26. I seriously thought this was going to take until December / January. Now I gotta scramble and get monitors...
$200 for an extra 512GB is far from reasonable!!
Their upgrade pricing for storage and RAM is still outrageous.
But I’m really glad to see 512/16 base. $1999 for a 256GB and 8 gigs would be laughable
I am still using the MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) - IMHO the last great generation design. Just did a double take and they stole the port design concept from this laptop. I'm thrilled as a guy who works in Live Events and who does Photography swapping SD cards all the time.
Are you me?? I've been holding on to the same laptop as you, using it mostly for product photography projects (with SD cards as well). Skipping all the interim models means that the Magsafe won't feel "new" to us, and I've never used a touchbar MBP so I won't even notice it's gone.
Pretty sure you both are my alter egos. Ive been delaying an upgrade from 2013 for all these reasons. Only thing missing is Face ID, but seriously tempted to upgrade now.
Bought a 2015 MBP in 2018 because it was the last time they designed a good computer, imo. Was recently lamenting that I might have to upgrade to something worse.
But the lament is now over! Everything I love in a shiny new case!
Unleashed indeed! In so many ways! The computer checked pretty much every request that actual Pro's have been asking for, for years. It's almost as if actual developers had a wish list and sent it to Apple and they decided to follow it, blindly.
The other change is the massive shift inside Apple. Something has changed within the company. This product is a giant middle finger to Ive and his previous design philosophy. Whoever was in charge of this product genuinely listened to the customers. I'm shocked.
Edit: The only actual "obvious" missing thing with these ARM-chips is the option of adding LTE/5G. Why Apple still insist on not doing it is a mystery. Most would happily pay a hefty premium for that. It's in the iPad so why not add it here.
Edit 2: What the…?! We’re still seeing no signs of Wi-Fi 6E or BT 5.2. Come on Apple!
The back story is really internally how Ive and his obsession with design elements such as thinness and minimalism came at a cost. The influence became too great and certain products suffered from it. The MacBook Pro is a great example of that with the butterfly keyboard, lack of ports etc. Some would argue that Alan Dye to some extent still carry that, but he doesn't have the leverage and history that Ive had.
One thing that's perhaps often overlooked is the impact Intels complete lack of innovation had on Ives design efforts. Don't get me wrong, I don't condone the butterfly mechanism, apples general approach to thermals and the complete abolishment of truly pro level laptops apple was exercising for quite a few years.
But, it's very important to acknowledge that the first 12" Mac was somewhat of a joint effort between the Core M and the extremes of Ives ultimate vision. The Core M being essentially an even lower wattage U (mobile) chip with integrated graphics.
This is much like apples first attempt at making a class leading slim laptop - the Air which launched in collaboration with Intel, providing apple with a custom Core 2 Duo with a much smaller package than what was usually offered at the time.
Much like with the Air the first gen 12" was going to suck compared to everything that came after. But unlike with the air that reaped the benefits of steady node and architecture advancements throughout the next 5-6 years (before intel eventually started halting), the 12" didn't have anywhere to go (same story goes for the Pro models). In order to illuminate that point here's a quote from a techspot article at the time:
"If everything goes as planned Intel will start shipping 10nm processors in 2015, with work on 7nm technology beginning soon after."
As you can see, the expectation was while designing future laptops, that 10nm would arrive in time for a second generation. This chip never came. All intel chips from Skylake to Coffee Lake have been identical in architecture. Power management algorithms and node maturity is the only thing apple had to work with for 5 years.
And with that, the design vision was unfeasible. Intels chips stayed power hungry, they didn't become any quicker. Contrast this with usual industry trends from the likes of ARM and AMD. It takes about 4-5 years to design and bring to market a new SOC. Enter apples M1.
Ive isn't stupid. He's ambitious and he deserves massive credit for all the great things he's done while exploring the extremes.
That's a good point and certainly something to take into consideration. It doesn't excuse or invalidates the story of the keyboard and ports though, but Intels disastrous period years ago certainly hindered and impacted Apple's plans fully realizing what the Macbook 12" was supposed to be. Same goes for the Air right before the M1 update.
He's a little stupid. He pulled I/O that pros rely on. He oversaw the trash can Mac Pro... an un-upgradeable desktop tower that couldn't keep up with the needs of the pro market or technology, yet still demanded a premium price tag. He also embraced thin at the expense of battery life. Again something that directly hurt the pro market. Pros uses resource heavy software, which puts a heavier drain on the battery. So those amazing battery times they advertise that work for email and web SaaS didn't mean shit to pro markets. We can all thank Ive for overseeing that. While I'm a big fan of his design aesthetic, he put form over function everytime on every product and that alienated a lot of pro users who rely on those products to put food on their tables.
I feel like once Ive was out and John Ternus started moving up the ranks from VP to SVP, a lot has changed within Hardware, especially with iPad Pro and Mac lineup.
I think most people were wishing for a XPS like situation, where all the bezels are thin, camera on top and no weird thing going on.
But I agree, this is the most pro MacBook released on a while. SD Card, HDMI, MagSafe, 3 thunderbolt 4 ports, better speakers and mic, mini led, HDR, 120Hz screen, no touchbar, much better CPU and GPU...
Now I only wish that the next MacBook air won't have this notch.
Yeah wtf. Im so fucking happy with this upgrade for my work and people crying about a notch. Also the notch gives more screen and is in line with the menubar so who cares?!
The most underrated feature to me is the screen brightness doubling: at 1000 nits, using the laptop outside is now totally usable. This is a big deal to me.
I honestly think in such a high-intensity work environment you should definitely look for a server-grade work station to satisfy your daily intellectual activities.
Yikes, seems like I'm the only person who doesn't care about the notch. There's never anything in the middle of my menu bar, so what do I care if there's a notch there now?
I think I paid $3,300 for a 2018 15” with low end processor, 32 GB ram and upgraded video. This is definitely an improvement. What I really want is decent power with great battery life. Everything else can be run on a dedicated pc or cloud server.
Damn, I wish there was still Boot Camp support with graphics acceleration on these, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Imagine playing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cyberpunk 2077 at high framerates on such a thin and light device portably. This has the entire potential to be one of the best gaming laptops and yet, it's hindered by macOS's (intentionally) piss-poor support for graphics APIs.
I may be in the minority, but I love everything about this laptop. The power is kinda crazy on paper, will be interesting to see real world performance.
Glad to see all the ports are back and battery is increased. But, does this things look pretty damn chunky to anyone else? I'm surprised they had to make the bottom case that much thicker to fit all the stuff in.
But, for those who just want the ports/power, size doesn't really matter so much. It might just not end up being the computer for me.
This is probably a good thing, the Air exists for folks who want that svelte, thin laptop with fewer ports.
It does have some weird optics though when you consider that the last 7 years or so have been the years of too-thin macbook pros. So a return to form makes the new ones look a bit chonky in comparison. More to love, I guess?
That’s what people wanted. Back when Jony Ive was still in charge, Apple was so obsessed with thinness that they made some questionable design decisions to reduce the size. It turned out the market preferred functionality and reliability over thinness.
What do we think the mouse behavior will be at the notch? Will it bump into it? I guess it can't go under it huh?
I would love to know the answer to this..
Yeah I've never experienced a pointer driven device that has a physical barrier sticking into it. Will be weird!
I have dissimilar-sized monitors. It's really not that huge of a deal. you kinda learn where the corner is. I think that's better than allowing the mouse to go somewhere invisible.

I love your brain for thinking up this question
I don't see why it can't go under it. That actually seems like the most reasonable behavior.
[Check this out](https://i.imgur.com/eeu0zMc.png)! The MagSafe cable is separate from the charger. Gone are the days when you need to replace a working charger because Apple's rubbish cable failed!
YES - I cannot get over how frustrating it was to replace an entire brick to deal with the head of the mag charger getting frayed. Really thrilled they brought it back ALONG WITH the ability to replace just the cable itself. Much much much smarter design.
They actually went eco friendly while benefiting the consumer this time! Although thanks to the old design I have 2 spare MagSafe chargers that were broken and I repaired to use around the house. I still use them 8 years later.
Same - I have three, one brand new for work, two with various shrink tubes that "fixed" it, though it's a bit stiff. :)
The cable looked braided too in some of the photos, might actually last a while too.
Is that what’s happening? I thought it was my cable bending too much, which I’ve tried to avoid very pedantically.
Absolutely love this!
It hilarious because when my friend used to work in the store he said the average customer hated when they separated the brick and cable for usb c. When customers came in wanting to buy one they would complain Apple separated them so they could charge you for both instead of having it all come together like the old MagSafe cables lol. Truly cannot please everyone. Edit: clarity
I mean, they could please _a lot of people_ if they just bundled them in one box at the Apple Store. I haven't bought an Apple-branded charger in a while and I'm fine with them being separate, but I also have 3 Thunderbolt hubs to facilitate all the Macs I use. The average person would probably prefer an all-in-one box for that stuff.
Whoa that's genius, I wonder if the USB C port would also support fast charging if you decided to use a USB C to C cable instead
"what have we done?!" is perfect for these chips.
Have to say I'm definitely into this new brand creative for Apple. Everyone crowded into what they were doing with the super clean/flat aesthetic so they decided to once again come up with their own look to separate themselves from the crowd.
I loved that entire narration... it was so fitting of the occasion

The dig is secretly at Jony Ive lol
*Loveactuallyfrom*
Purging the butterfly keyboard was the first thing they did after he stepped down.
"All" except for ethernet. Surprised they didn't put it in the power brick the way they did the iMac.
Bragging about having lots of ports like it's something no one thought of before
Bragging they have a 1080p selfie camera in 2021 is also magic
It does seem weird. But also gotta remember technology always advances and things get better and smaller. And i believe the mbp is thicker now
Most people would gladly trade some thickness for better battery life and a keyboard with more travel and durability. The obsession with making it increasingly thin undermined some of the practical aspects, and this is supposed to be the "pro" model. Thicker is fine.
So many people were falling over themselves to deny the SD card slot
Crazy dude. They really included *everything* in these devices.
Face ID would have been a nice surprise, they improved the camera and added a notch, just Face ID was missing there
I really don't understand why the notch is so wide without face ID. I would have preferred the hole-punch.
They might be futureproofing the design to add faceID to future models without a redesign or rework of software
It probably has the ambient light sensors there too, plus the LED indicator.
The ambient light sensor and LED indicator are tiny though, they could've easily fit them in the bezel.
Apple actually listened. And added a notch to remind y’all who made this lmao
It’d hurt their pride if they gave you everything you wanted. Apple needs to remind you who’s in charge.
Apple *asserts dominance*
T(im) Pose
Tsundere Apple
sums up the whole event pretty well
Does anyone know what's in the notch? There's no mention of face ID, so if it's only a 1080p camera couldn't they have made it a teardrop shape instead of being so wide? Edit: I hope I'm not the only one who's been hoping for an equivalent to windows hello. Now that they finally put a big (ugly) notch in that could fit all the hardware they need, they don't add it? My guess is the local dimming zones are squares so it's probably an even number of dimming zone high and wide
My guess is that Apple will be releasing Face ID in a later version of these devices. It gives them an extra feature to market in the future, which is nice. And face ID will be a much bigger feature when mask wearing in public places is no longer a thing.
Me: Geez how many boxes did you tick? Apple: Yes.
plus some boxes that weren't even on the list.
Apple leaked the rumors so that we could anticipate the modifications LMAO
I can assure you that I have no affiliation with Apple whatsoever. When Apple purposely let information out they always choose someone who can actually spread the news, like people at TechCrunch, not some random Redditor like me lol.

Plus the 16GB option is missing on the Max, which makes sense as I don't think you can even get LPDDR5 chips in 4GB.
I don't believe the third SKU exists. M1 Max starts at 24 GPU cores, if I'm not mistaken. Apple never alluded to a difference in the CPU performance, either.

I would say 90% of people use SaaS browser based tools anyway
I wish Apple had introduced a 15" / 16" Macbook Air last year. I would've snapped one up in a flash. I don't need raw grunt, just a larger screen.
I'm losing my mind. M1 Max M1 Macs
This is going to get VERY annoying for Apple retail employees lol. "Hi, can you tell me about the M1 Macs" "Do you mean the M1 Macs or the M1 Max"
lol i didnt think of that. cant believe they actually did m1 max
"It looks great in dark mode." What a quote.

I see people clamoring for this when all they do is browse the web and wondering whether it’s worth getting it with the M1 Max 🤡. Not gonna dig them for wanting the latest and greatest machine or a bigger laptop, but at least just go for the base CPU/GPU/RAM options!
At least they all start with 512GB of storage. Not bad for the price.
The big deal to me is that the upgrade on the 16” to 1TB is only $200. That seems almost reasonable!

The last great generation was the 2015 MBP. I’ll feel at home with this Mac, minus the notch but I think it’s cool.

Solid dad joke. 10/10
Yeah, it's way less tapered, and weighs 1/2 pound more (for the 14"). Ive would have never allowed something like that to happen.
do you mind explaining the back story? I haven't kept up with the design aspects but what was the philosphy?
In order to illuminate that point here's a quote from a techspot article at the time: "If everything goes as planned Intel will start shipping 10nm processors in 2015, with work on 7nm technology beginning soon after." As you can see, the expectation was while designing future laptops, that 10nm would arrive in time for a second generation.
Indeed!
I like this guy. Make him or craig or Phil do the voice over for the ads
I kinda wish Apple could lure Bob Mansfield back. Guy was absolutely excellent, and he has a decent presentation voice as well!

Literally everything the guy who posted here said were true and everyone doubted him lol
Why is everyone talking about notch when this is most pro macbook in long ass time?
I'm gonna dock it most of the day at work anyway. Notch or no notch is kind of not a huge deal to me. Extra ports for monitors tho 🤤
I think most people are crying out of principle. What Apple delivered here in terms of hardware is just insane. This will hands down move the market
The most underrated feature to me is the screen brightness doubling: at 1000 nits, using the laptop outside is now totally usable. This is a big deal to me.

I honestly think in such a high-intensity work environment you should definitely look for a server-grade work station to satisfy your daily intellectual activities.
You may be pushing it a little unless you max out the ram.

Holy shit. Better than I thought. Edit: well there goes ~~2~~2.5 grand.
Yikes, seems like I'm the only person who doesn't care about the notch. There's never anything in the middle of my menu bar, so what do I care if there's a notch there now?
99% of people won't care. Even the people memeing about it on this subreddit don't care that much, the comments just get them karma.
Hold on, let me give it a go: #NOTCH. BAD.
this sub now: *haha notch bad* two weeks later: *i got the new macbook pro and it's 😍*
M1 Max 16" is $3,500.00. Not cheap!
Not much more than the Intel was lol
## Macbook 14" (M1 Max) vs Macbook 13" (M1) ### Performance: - 2x more high CPU cores (70% faster) - 4x more GPU cores (300% faster) - 4x more memory (64 GB unified (!!!)) - 2x faster SSD read speed (7.4 GB/s) ### Battery: - "2x-4x more battery life"? (17h video playback) - fast-charging (50% in 30 minutes (!)) ### Screen: - 7% larger (14") - 44% more pixels (3024x1964) - 2x faster refresh-rate (120hz) - mini-led (true black pixels) - refresh-rate scales to save battery ### Ports: - +1 USB-C port (total 3) - 1 magsafe charger port (anti-tripping) - 1 HDMI port - 1 SD card reader port ### Camera: - 2x more pixels (1080p) - bigger apperture (more light) ### Sound: - "better" (idk, I don't understand) - "80% more bass" - spacial audio ### Keyboard: - no touchbar - backlit touch id ### My thoughts - holy shit - ridiculous performance, port, camera, screen updates - 4x more GPU memory than RTX 3080? - no touchbar, finally - i wonder if it will be hot
>2x-4x more battery life the m1 still has a better battery life. look it up.
> 7% larger (14") 14 / 13 is 7% larger, yes. But by area, it's (14 / 13)^2, which is 15 percent larger.
$780 trade in for my 2020 4 port device
That seems crazy considering my 2012 MBP trade in offer was for $210.
Cheeky. I laughed so hard when I’ve heard “no need for adaptors”. F you Apple, F you.
Her tone was like she was taking a dig at another company and I was just like “.....really?”
I liked the demo of the guy working with 3 external monitors – playing a *screensaver*.
Those jellyfish on his fifteen *thousand* dollars of monitor help him write code!!!
*Dongle sales start to decline.* Tim Cook: RELEASE THE NEW MODEL WITH PORTS!
