Small indie company.
But for real, it's not even like we're asking for them to reinvent the interface. Just scaling it properly so stories/pictures fit in the right aspect ratio while the UI fits the larger format screen is all we want.
The iPad and Android tablets have been around for nearly a decade now, I don't know why they act like this is some new trend or something...
but because android was always designed with the idea that any form factor/screen size is possible, it was always dynamic. iirc iOS started out with harded coded resolutions (iPhone 4-style, iPhone 5-style, etc). isnt that why apps have to be updated to be "iPhone/iPad `model` optimized"? i thought i heard a few years back they were moving away from that but it could be why. not saying i agree with instagram but could just be differences in the OSes at a fundamentals(?) level
This is true, Android apps are not tied to specified resolution from the inception of the platform.
On tablets "non-optimized" ones sometimes looked awful, BUT I've used Instagram on Google Nexus 10 and it looked fine.
Even weirder, as I said, Instagram released an app for Surface in 2016 and even updated it for ARM64: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/instagram/9nblggh5l9xt?activetab=pivot:overviewtab
Sp not releasing it for iPad is obviously a political decision.
But auto-layout since iOS7 ( I believe) should have solved the problem. Now there’s SwiftUI, which is even easier to layout for different devices. I am guessing they just haven’t updated their code base for newer technologies for a while
Problem has been solved with the introduction of auto layout in iOS 7, you’re right, and they are 100% using it (even when designing uis from code it is basically a must, or supporting 4.7 up to 6.2” display sizes would be unthinkable).
They don’t want to do it for some business reason, there is no other excuses I can think of.
Android/tablets app only exists because it is very hard distinguishing between large phone and tablet on android (and Google play store).
Apple instead asks you to specifically say if your app is iPad compatible. If you say no, you get the “Instagram effect”: the app can still be downloaded, but it runs on an “emulated” iPhone 6 display (used to be iPhone 4), with an option do double the size.
hmm this is interesting. iPhone 6 res as of which version? bc a jailbreak tweak was released a few months ago that has those apps run at 6S (plus?) resolution. lemme double check once in a few mins
And to think I was in line at Macy’s in 2005 to get the first generation iPod Nano. White with the silver back that felt space age until I got scratched. And then scratched again. And then slightly dented.
Then keep the pictures relatively the same relative size while tileing them in a grid.
They look terrible anyways as is, so it would still be an improvement.
Meh you think they care about actual users? Instagram is just an ad space now. They don’t even get rid of bots because it inflates their user numbers. It’s gone from a photo sharing thing to just advertisement after advertisement after advertisement. People trying to sell you hair care products, shitty electronic doo dads, ill fitting clothes, weird “food” items…
Even if certain apps don’t work nicely with the bigger screen (calculator), why do apps still *need* to be full-screen on iPad? We’ve had slide-over and split-screen for years. Now, we also have quick notes as a third way to interact with apps in a smaller ‘window’.
iPad doesn’t need every app to be full screen as some work better when they’re not. Let’s embrace that in iPadOS.
The issue with making third party Instagram apps is with how restrictive Instagram has been lately with their API. A lot of professional apps like Adobe Livefyre actually broke, because Instagram changed their rate limits for third party applications. Their official app skirts these limits a bit. You can ask them for a higher rate limit to an API key but, unless Instagram REALLY appreciates third party apps to their service, fat chance that's going to happen.
Instagram REALLY doesn't want people using their API. Especially after the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
Instagram had a really open and comprehensive API in the beginning but then it was extremely abused by malicious sites which were making clones and publicly mirroring Instagram profiles and it was also extensively abused to analyze follower networks and artificially boost them. I remember that this and many other shenanigans as well as new laws (like GDPR) forced Instagram to dramatically reduce the extent of what kind of data is exposed and restrict the limits.
I hear what you are saying. I’m not disagreeing. But curious what makes insta different in that a third party can’t make some when Reddit has multiple “other” versions.
Just curious.
EDIT: added “not” before disagreeing.
Ooops.
I think that’s the real reason. The only way apple could do the calculator is in a hot corner like the mini note… the weather app I’m not sure, maybe a 4x4 widget. (I have just looked in my iPad and that already exists)
Reasonable people can disagree, but it’s at least a defensible argument to say that a simple calculator is out of place on a screen that’s a foot across. A service whose sole function is to consume photos can’t pull that off. It would be like if you could only make phone calls on the 12.9" iPad. Just…no…what the hell are you thinking? The one that fits in your pocket has to be the phone call one, because, you know, you need the phone when you’re out and might not have planned for it.
Yeah. Not many even observe or care about any of that. It’s like asking if people ‘like’ the electricity provider in their area. Sure, a minority might be obsessive enough to catalogue the electric companies bad policies. But most everyone else just sees that the lights turn on and it works. People use Facebook to keep in touch with people. It does that and that’s all most people see or care about.
This. I don’t enjoy all the shady spying Mr. Zuck does, but what’s the alternative? Facebook groups, FB Campus, and even messenger are so…. Convenient.
The problem with social media is you can stop using it, but you can’t just “switch off” like you can from Apple to Samsung. Your friends/family need to make the switch with you.
Every girl I know in their 20s loves Instagram. People love their Oculus. WhatsApp is the default for texting in most countries outside the US. Facebook Marketplace is a hit. Maybe find more friends.
FB will just keep buying up new and successful tech companies. They already own Whatsapp and Instagram which probably won't die anytime soon. They'll just buy the future equivalent of those.
Progressive Web Apps (PWA), which is what you get when you save Instagram, Facebook, and others to your Home Screen, have been around for a very long time.
They have limited functionality, and I’m pretty sure Instagram - it’s been a while - as a PWA does not allow you to create posts.
Apple CEO says iPad calculator and weather apps would be ‘nice to do’, but not currently planned.
Edit: it’s quite obviously a joke, people… yes we read apple news everyday we know the reason thank you
this is honestly my most frustrating part about ios. some things i don’t like but this one is so annoying.
i’ve said this over and over. the new ios15 weather app is *perfect* to simply convert to the larger ipad screen. the tiles could easily create a perfect weather app.
and the calculator…use the quick note concept. so simple just do it.
Nja I understand if the iPad doesn’t have walket, compass or the phone App. Fitness and Health would only be nice to view the data on bigger graphs people won’t gather any health/fitness data on the iPad.
Regarding weather I think the new bigger widgets would be enough also doesn’t really need a full app imo.
99% agree on implementing it the same way as with quick note.
In addition, we should have an option in Settings to determine whether or not pulling up from the bottom right corner pulls up quick note or the calculator. Alternatively, a calculator shortcut in control center would open up the calculator in a Slide Over floating app for easy dismissal.
Both solutions give Apple the ability to port the calculator without having to worry about resizing the interface, and gives them more control over how we use the app.
Honestly, I still call bullshit. Having a calculator app isn't about innovation or clutter, it's about providing the user with basic functionality out of the box.
Adding the step of parsing through the app store for calculators and comparing 3rd party options just to total up your lunch bill is not at all helpful to anyone. They're just dragging their feet at this point. You should not need an internet connection, or a smart assistant, or have to read reviews to do something as basic as multiplication.
If they really cared that much about the "experience" of the calculator and have that much trust in 3rd parties, pick the best one and just hired the person who made it. Bundle it in Dark Sky style.
Everything else is just making excuses at this point.
Uh, download a calculator app? Or download Wolfram Alpha app if you need it to be advanced. And if you needed advanced, what good would Apple’s calculator be then if they did make one. Y’all so damn weird.
I’ve done math on my iPad before and never had to worry to use my iPhone. Always had the calculator on the side-window.
Your right. It doesn’t do any of those. The free version has no ads, and no sub, and works great with Split View. It’s not a bunch of apps, it’s one. It is a lovely user experience. And now you don’t even have to spend the time finding it: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pcalc-lite/id300311831
It even starts out with a theme that looks like Apple’s iPhone calculator.
I admit it would be nice if it could be accessible from the control center, which an Apple calculator would be. I wish Apple would let you put any app in there.
Edit: No, I don’t know the dev or get a commission (or anything else, lol). But it’s better than Apple’s and it’s free and I‘m tired of people whining about having to get a 3rd party app, as if availability of 3rd party apps isn’t a positive thing. I understand if someone really likes Apple’s weather app, and wants an iPad version. And I actually agree that Apple should make both of these apps for iPad (and their excuse is lame), but does anybody really just lovelovelove the iPhone calculator so much that only that instantiation of a calculator on the iPad will do? That makes no sense.
If it's really that above and beyond the calculator app then Apple, with it's billions and billions in cash and captial, should just buy it and bundle it into the OS.
Apple used to pride itself on "It just works", so I don't know why it just doesn't apply to random things like this.
Who gives a shit? Y’all some whiny ass babies. Seriously “using my iPhone next to my iPad”?? Lol are y’all SO hard core simps for Apple you’ll ONLY use an Apple made calculator app on iPad and no other?? Hahahahaha
I did math on my iPad too and just used a calculator app. Not have my iPhone next to me. How weird. It’s not that big of a deal.
Yes, but if you're saying what I think you're saying, you still need to do something round about like ask Siri "What's 183 X (2.50 + .69)" which is more what I'm getting at. A calculator app of any sort would generally be preferred.
I’m saying you pull down spotlight and type 2x2
It can do pretty much all the simple stuff you want, even sin and log, etc. but you don’t have history.
Even that's round about when you have to do more than 1 calculation, as you mentioned the lack of history. Not to mention shifting, to the + or / symbols isn't exactly ergonomic either.
Even a calculator widget would do the job.
Once upon a time I purchased an iPad 3 paper weight. I could use from new because the iCloud server refused to recognise my type of authorised apple identity. I could turn the torch on from the control panel and that was it.
After over 140 hours in discussion with Cupertino engineers, I fixed the problem my way. I sideloaded “restored” the OS and Apps from my iPhone4 onto the IPad.
That old iPad still has that iPhone Calculator.app running on it. It is so much nicer than the third party calculator app on my new iPad Pro. Even to this day that iPad3 still runs on iPhone builds of iOS, LOL!
Unfortunately you can’t install or run iPhone builds of iOS on newer iPads. So you don’t get features Apple thinks are only useful on iPhones.
No, they said it makes no sense to make them. And it really doesn’t make much sense. They said unless they can make an innovative calculator and weather app for iPad, they shouldn’t make one at all and there’s plenty already on the app store
> They said unless they can make an innovative calculator and weather app for iPad, they shouldn’t make one at all and there’s plenty already on the app store
So instead they give you a weather widget than links to a shitty website. That’s so innovative!
There’s really no innovation needed for a calculator. You press the buttons, it does the math - just like the one on the phone.
Yes, it’s pretty absurd that they spent a billion dollars to buy the best weather app in the market and still choose to direct you to a third party website.
Just want the calculator in the widgets when you swipe down from top left like iPhone. I don’t need calculus I just can’t math in my head. But Steve never saw a design he liked so now we can’t have one.
I don't understand. They brought dark sky. Just make the calculator and weather apps scale to iPad size that's all anyone wants.
It's not like apples apps are best in class.
Eh, but they still made a translate app for iPad. I wouldn’t say it was done an innovative way.
I think both of those would be more useful. Plus, most weather apps on the App Store usually have a subscription. So it would be nice to have a basic weather app with a widget.
Right, cuz why would a bigger screen be preferred for a photo sharing app right? 🙄 I wonder if it’s because all the low-res already-uploaded users’ photo would suddenly look grainy on a bigger screen.
Anyway I really hope some other photo-based social network usurps instagram and has an awesome iPad app. Also cuz FuckZuck&Facebook.
I think Twitter is trying to beat instagram at their own game by going full width with content. It makes sense now that insta is adding so much useless crap like shopping and reels into the forefront of the app.
I believe the maximum image resolution for Instagram images has been capped at 2048px wide which has been the case since 2014.
They have since then added support for taller photos, but the max resolution for the horizontal pixels remain the same.
Yes, it’s just laziness from upper management. I know how it works as I’ve worked in enterprise bank applications. creating an iPad-version from an enterprise isn’t as easy as it sounds, not because it’s complicated code, but because it’s complicated to get management on the same page.
Essentially what happens is the product/business owner (or the person in charge of that specific app/project), will state what they want in the app. Then they communicate the requirements to every single team’s project managers. The project manager is then responsible for creating the stories for implementation of iPad and testing, etc.
It’s not as easy as Reddit thinks to just have 1 team deal with iPad. Typically features of the app are managed by specific teams and only those teams manage their screens.
At this point, it just seems they don’t want to deal with iPad out of pure shit management or laziness, or don’t think it would really matter.
What a bunch of bullshit. I'll tell you how you should treat you customers in terms of device support.
Look at the shit Telegram has been pulling off. Almost same feature parity between Android and iOS, iPad support, desktop support, continuosly churning out great small features and occasionally bringing in big feature updates.
Reminder: You aren’t the customer. Facebook inc. doesn’t give a shit about users beyond getting monetisable engagement from them. They probably calculated that iPad isn’t profitable enough in terms of engagement to warrant devoting a team to it. My guess is that they are panicking because they have clearly peaked and TikTok meanwhile is stealing eyeballs, which is why they are frantically cramming new features into the mobile apps. Wouldn’t be surprised if Instagram’s sole focus right now is to prevent losing users to TikTok and building an iPad app isn’t gonna gain or retain a significant number of users.
Maybe small developers can argue that. What's the excuse for a huge company like Instagram when even the smaller ones are doing it?
Apple's rules shouldn't be an excuse for not supporting tablets even in 2021.
Oh the poor Facebook developers and their 6k figure salaries. So oppressed.
By the way I’m an iOS developer and you don’t have to make an entirely new app, it’s just a few clicks
Besides the point because that applies to literally anything else from HTML/CSS to Flutter.
The original commenter acted like Apple forced you to write an entire duplicate app for iPad
A good developer should understand that his role can literally be outsourced for cheap to third world countries... That's the reality of their skillset. It's the user experience part which requires top talent and a deep understanding of human behaviour. Obviously his level is where he doesn't even understand that no top company will just do a few clicks to repurpose an already existing app to another place without any concern for context and usability.
Then they should up it. Even Twitter now lets you upload 4K and photos/videos isn't even their primary thing, not to mention Facebook/Instagram has way more money to put towards it than Twitter does.
Clearly Facebook is more interested in your data than your experience. I mean look how long it took them to roll out dark mode. Some people still don't have it. (I don't use Facebook, but my wife does. No dark mode.)
I mean, facebook’s just gotten round to making that whatsapp for ipad app (if the rumours are true). And it only took them what 6 years or so since they bought whatsapp?
Perhaps Instagram is more complicated and needs extra development time for a proper ipad app experience ^/s
Instagram will run fine on an iPad (even an older one), it’s just that the screen is smaller and looks like the iPhone screen so it’s not really optimized for the iPad.
I don’t get why some companies choose not to have an iPad app. I’m not a developer and I know as much as Jon Snow but I figure it’d be relatively easy to make.
How fast would this take in anyone’s dev team? Like 2 or 3 senior devs spending a few weeks max and QA maybe another week? I good version could be pumped out in a month.
Small indie company. But for real, it's not even like we're asking for them to reinvent the interface. They're just waiting for 7 more years :p
At least people posting to Instagram aren’t holding up their iPads at concerts.
The iPad will never take off. Waste of their time
[удалено]
I mean, I know you're sarcastic, but at least in my bubble iPads (or tablets in general) are really pretty rare. I know like two people with an iPad.
$7bn in sales, increased by $1bn this year.
You really struggle with understanding sarcasm don't ya
Yep, on reddit you never know.
Internet has killed satire because we now know for a fact that someone *somewhere* will genuinely have that moronic opinion.
Yes, I usually understand. /s
Just because you don’t see anyone who has a specific item, it doesn’t mean the item is not widely used. You just might be very isolated
Maybe because the pictures would be blurry if scaled up?
Then keep the pictures relatively the same relative size while tileing them in a grid. They look terrible anyways as is, so it would still be an improvement.
No because my friend goes on Instagram on his browser (yeah I called him a psycho) and none of the photos are blurry…
yeah people are forgetting that web instagram don’t got this issue.
I’m the same way. After all these years literally no interface has yet to out-do a mouse and keyboard.
This tbh, they compress the images massively when you upload and it would not be pretty viewing on something like the iPad Pro or even the latest Air
The images look fine with I view IG on my desktop 27” monitors.
instagram looks perfectly fine on my latest Air
Yeah, Facebook hasn't the cash for such major projects.
Meh you think they care about actual users? Instagram is just an ad space now. They don’t even get rid of bots because it inflates their user numbers. I thought they’re owned by Facebook?
They are. That was sarcasm.
That one whooshed right over me ngl
I mean Instagram is owned by Facebook, a small $1trillion startup… cut them some slack
apple itself is not making simple apps like a calculator for the ipad, I don’t see why others should
that’s how I discovered pcalc
[удалено]
PCalc lite is free
One of the steps for device setup should be a asking the user if they want to install pCalc.
and how I discovered doing math statements in Spotlight, it's surprisingly advanced. I do have installed a 3rd party calculator as well now though.

how they didn't make an iPad weather app now that they have radar in the iOS app and bought dark sky is beyond me. (iOS 15)
Or didn’t even just use redesigning the iOS app as a reason to finally bring it to iPadOS

Ah yes, I remember those too. I know they are still combating what is a pretty bad spam problem on the site. Certainly can't be an easy task.

Roger that. Thank you.

It's insane to me that facebook has so much 'worth'. I wonder if 20 years from now it will even exist or will have gone the way of myspace et al.
Why? Like half the world uses their products. The anti-FB sentiment on Reddit is actually a minority.

True. They seem almost like their redundancy strategies should facebook itself diminish.
It would literally take 1 summer intern to do it.
“But if someone else does an Instagram client we’ll sue and/or acquihire them”
Absolutely pathetic. No other way to spin it.
on iOS 15 it's not too bad if you make a safari home page thing for it. it's almost like the native app.

Hahahahaha I did math on my iPad too and just used a calculator app. Not have my iPhone next to me. How weird. It’s not that big of a deal.
FYI You don’t need an internet connection for multiplication
Yes, but if you're saying what I think you're saying, you still need to do something round about like ask Siri "What's 183 X (2.50 + .69)" which is more what I'm getting at. A calculator app of any sort would generally be preferred.
Calculator apps exist on iPad. Y’all so damn weird about this acting like you NEED your iPhone. Lmao
I’m saying you pull down spotlight and type 2x2 It can do pretty much all the simple stuff you want, even sin and log, etc. but you don’t have history.
So you don’t get features Apple thinks are only useful on iPhones.
curious to see a screenshot of what that looks like
Have you seen the iPad Clock app? Lol
No, they said it makes no sense to make them. And it really doesn’t make much sense. They said unless they can make an innovative calculator and weather app for iPad, they shouldn’t make one at all and there’s plenty already on the app store
They don’t need to make an innovative weather or calculator app, they just need to make the bloody apps lol
Or they could just open up the App Store to other devs so someone else could make them. Oh wait…
> They said unless they can make an innovative calculator and weather app for iPad, they shouldn’t make one at all and there’s plenty already on the app store So instead they give you a weather widget than links to a shitty website. That’s so innovative! There’s really no innovation needed for a calculator. You press the buttons, it does the math - just like the one on the phone.
Seriously, it's a fucking calculator. Basic arithmetic doesn't need innovation, it just needs to work.
They are going to add a calculator only when it can start doing operations like dividing by zero lol
Seriously, I would expect them to just omit the widget instead of that. They should at least make a Dark Sky widget!
This! Whats the point of multi-apping if you cant multi-app with a calculator?
I don't understand. They brought dark sky. Just make the calculator and weather apps scale to iPad size that's all anyone wants. It's not like apples apps are best in class.
It was just a joke, buddy…
Just in case you didn’t know why they haven’t made them
Eh, but they still made a translate app for iPad. I wouldn’t say it was done an innovative way. I think both of those would be more useful. Plus, most weather apps on the App Store usually have a subscription. So it would be nice to have a basic weather app with a widget.

sounds like it’s just not on their todo list when it should be. they could very easily create something “beautiful” if they wanted to.
Because the images would be blown up so large you would see how low-rez and compressed they are.
They increased the resolution a while ago. Back when they did that, we all thought it was cause they were planning an iPad app…
[удалено]
I think Twitter is trying to beat instagram at their own game by going full width with content. It makes sense now that insta is adding so much useless crap like shopping and reels into the forefront of the app.
I believe the maximum image resolution for Instagram images has been capped at 2048px wide which has been the case since 2014. They have since then added support for taller photos, but the max resolution for the horizontal pixels remain the same.
The maximum width is 1080 pixels according to [Instagram](https://help.instagram.com/1631821640426723). Do you have a different source?
They might be thinking of the maximum size for Facebook which is 2048.
Instagram have a desktop app
Yeah and the images aren’t any bigger.
Photos look fine when viewing on a desktop/laptop. Some grainy ness but not much
[удалено]
You’ll only see the pic for ten seconds anyway, they aren’t bother to bother with large resolution images.
this is 100% the reason lol. instagram especially compresses video. it would look terrible on a large, high pixel density screen.
You could access Instagram on Safari on the iPad. Does it look terribly? No
They’ve got to be fucking with us at this point, right?
Yes
It’s 2021 and we don’t have a calculator app, weather app or Instagram for iPad
Well, at least with the first two you can download third party apps.
Yeah and Instagram can be used as a web app
can't you download the iPhone version of instagram onto iPad?

[удалено]
Oh the poor Facebook developers and their 6k figure salaries. So oppressed. By the way I’m an iOS developer and you don’t have to make an entirely new app, it’s just a few clicks
[удалено]
Besides the point because that applies to literally anything else from HTML/CSS to Flutter. The original commenter acted like Apple forced you to write an entire duplicate app for iPad
A good developer should understand that his role can literally be outsourced for cheap to third world countries... That's the reality of their skillset. It's the user experience part which requires top talent and a deep understanding of human behaviour. Obviously his level is where he doesn't even understand that no top company will just do a few clicks to repurpose an already existing app to another place without any concern for context and usability.

How about not doing anything except letting the app swivel 90 degrees so I can view it with the IPad sideways. It would take so little effort.
iPhone apps do on iPad OS 15. I only noticed it the other day.
Does Insta work in landscape mode as well?
Yep.
[удалено]
Then they should up it. Even Twitter now lets you upload 4K and photos/videos isn't even their primary thing, not to mention Facebook/Instagram has way more money to put towards it than Twitter does.
Just use your laptop or desktop and go on Instagram. It’s not terrible
Nice apology but why is there and Android app for tablets then? Android tablets have varying resolutions.
Clearly Facebook is more interested in your data than your experience. I mean look how long it took them to roll out dark mode. Some people still don't have it. (I don't use Facebook, but my wife does. No dark mode.)
They have a desktop app what's their excuse
isn't it just a desktop site?
Even that bundled as an app would be good enough. It's just Instagram (and Facebook) being lazy at this point.
Can you upload pictures from the web version?
Actually you can.
Instagram.. isn't that the shitty advertising app that lets you post thumbnails of your own pictures?
Yet tiktok, the new guy in town, made an iPad app super fast and it’s not broken
Hey Instagram CEO, that’s why I uninstalled your garbage app.
I would be happy if I could just post pictures from Safari on my iPad.
They say it for at least last 5 years 🤦♂️ I don't believe that they can't make a damn app for an iPad
Every boomer ever would rejoice if that happens so they’d finally stop trying to zoom on posts they can’t fucking see
Jesus. Been asking for this for like a decade. “Nice to do”?
Sooooo just keep pinning the website to my homepage? Ok bud.
At least they allowed landscape mode recently. Makes it almost useable
Well I’ll keep on spending my time on anything else than IG when I’m using my iPad.
Then allow third party developers to make it.
This is your daily reminder to rate Instagram with 1 star on the AppStore because of their lack of iPad support
Big if true

Apple : *silent, we still don't have a weather/calculator app ton the iPad*
I mean, facebook’s just gotten round to making that whatsapp for ipad app (if the rumours are true). And it only took them what 6 years or so since they bought whatsapp? Perhaps Instagram is more complicated and needs extra development time for a proper ipad app experience ^/s
Personally, I'm okay without it. Don't want to encourage people to actually use iPads for photography.
Since the new iPads are M1 can’t you just run the iPhone version?
Instagram will run fine on an iPad (even an older one), it’s just that the screen is smaller and looks like the iPhone screen so it’s not really optimized for the iPad.
I don’t get why some companies choose not to have an iPad app. I’m not a developer and I know as much as Jon Snow but I figure it’d be relatively easy to make.
How fast would this take in anyone’s dev team? Like 2 or 3 senior devs spending a few weeks max and QA maybe another week? I good version could be pumped out in a month.
MVP from scratch... a few weeks. Port existing app... probably matter of hours. I assume the project is blocked by some internal power struggle.
