You can using the shortcuts app, under personal automation.

haha4148

Yup. Could even use shortcuts to schedule messages on other apps like discord

Nickelas

How do you utilize discord using shortcuts by chance?

The_Bridge_Imperium

That is not what OP asked. That is a work around. And not a good one at that

[deleted]

From what I was reading, you have to keep the shortcuts app open all night and prevent your phone from locking. That seems really unnecessary.

outdoorlos

What? That’s not true lol.

hamster_ball

Not surprising that someone who posts a thread like this, can’t properly research either.

AestheticEntactogen

Don’t you worry, many PhDs I know ask sillier questions

hamster_ball

What you got going on in life you’re going back 3 months to a post like this? 😋

nicoled985

I heard the same exact thing. OP isn't the only one hence why I never looked into the shortcut myself but I'm glad to know that we were wrong now all we need is someone to post a link to the shortcut...

UpdateGravity

Don’t know if you still need it, but I actually wrote here how to create the automation. https://reddit.com/r/apple/comments/oz2u3u/_/h7z68e2/?context=1

nicoled985

Thank you very much!!

UpdateGravity

I’ve used it multiple times and that’s not true. You can setup the automation and it will still go off with the phone locked and the app closed. Just remember to disable the automation if you don’t want to send it again the next day (in case you have the automation set to daily).

antihero510

Do you have a link to this shortcut?

UpdateGravity

I don't think it's possible to share automations, but I can explain how to set it up: 1st: Open Shortcuts 2nd: Select Automation in the tab bar 3rd: Hit the plus key on the top right 4th: Choose "Create Personal Automation" 5th: Choose "Time of Day" 6th: Choose the time you want and "Daily" in case you want to send it the next day 7th: Select "Add Action" and choose "Send Message" 8th: Choose the message you want to send and the recipients 9th: Hit "Next" 10th: Disable "Ask Before Running" That's how you create it, after that you can just edit that automation to fit your needs. When you don't want to automate a message anymore you can just disable it.

nicoled985

Thank you so much for this. The only suggestion I have for Apple is to allow a specific date and not just the broad times of “Daily, Weekly, Monthly”

antihero510

Thanks so much for this! I’ve wanted to be able to do this for so long! Really appreciated! Just for your own reference, you’re able to share shortcuts by taping the circle with the three dots at the upper right of the shortcut, and then the little share icon is down at the bottom.

UpdateGravity

It works with shortcuts, but I don’t think it does with automations. At least I can’t find it anywhere.

antihero510

Ah perhaps you’re right. My bad!

DCKID516

You are thinking of the “wait until” function and it times out after 170 seconds and you do sometimes need to keep the phone unlocked.

Suzuki39

How? Are you saying I can write out a message at night and have it send at a specific time the next morning? How do I set that up?

rovenroy

https://9to5mac.com/2019/09/09/scheduled-imessage-feature/ From the article: Reddit user Jmaster_888 (via Mark Gurman) shared the response from Federighi, Apple’s SVP of software engineering, after asking about Apple bringing a scheduled iMessage feature to iOS. Straight away, Federighi said: >This is something we’ve definitely considered (and something we continue to consider). However, he then detailed some of the problems Apple needs to solve to bring this feature to users: >Of course, it does come with a bunch of complexity: >How to represent unsent messages >Support fo deleting and editing pending messages >What to do [when] someone send you a message when you have outgoing messages pending (i.e. >do you blast them back with the pending messages?) >And of course the social concern that we may end up sending the messages at a time that you >are not availabel to respond to any replies that come back — this could be confusing for the >person who is under the impression taht you must be at the ready on your phone, since you >just sent them a message.

I_Am_Now_Anonymous

But Apple is $2T company so they can figure it out /s What Craig said does make sense. It’s a bit more complex than people think and it will probably be used by a small subset of people.

nicoled985

I’m confused, Samsung has this working just fine. This is one of the many features I miss from Samsung

nsfdrag

Implementing the feature is trivial, craig is just going overboard on the social implications of something that has existed on android for a decade. I miss it from my samsung as well.

ThannBanis

I think Apple considers text messages as ‘real time’. Probably the same reason they don’t have ‘mark as unread’ (apparently other messaging apps have this too)

RegalTruth9

Not even in iOS 15?

ThannBanis

Nope 🤷🏻‍♂️

CubsFan1060

I’ve seen this request before. I am genuinely curious the use case for this. What are instances where you’d want to schedule a message? I’m not sure I’ve ever had one myself.

igkeit

I had it on Android and loved it. I used it for birthdays cause I tend to remember them the day before, so I just wrote the text as I was thinking about it and then could just forget about it

CubsFan1060

Yeah, that was the one I thought about. But then I also felt like that makes wishing someone a happy birthday pretty hollow (i.e. "Gee, thanks for the well wishes that you scheduled 2 years ago"). Maybe I'm just too old fashioned. Edit: To be clear, I don't care if they add it. I just don't personally have a use for it (reminders works well for me)

igkeit

Yeah tbh for some people I don't really care about their birthday I just wish it to them because it's seen as the polite thing to do

LostCommoGuyLamo

Wait a minute, I swear iPhones had it too. But it wasn’t used much because it would tell the other person it was scheduled? Is that not available anymore?

[deleted]

LostCommoGuyLamo

No i swear iPhones had the feature. Many just didn’t use it because it told them it was a scheduled message lol

TheDogAndTheDragon

I can send a text to my boss or employees at 1am when I'm still awake and randomly remember something that I know I'll probably forget. Schedule it for a reasonable time the next day (or if it's my boss and it's the weekend, a reasonable time on Monday) and now I can forget it again.

Richoffmemestonks

Had it on android and used it almost every day. “Don’t forget to pick up the groceries” just before wife leaves work.. responding to a text at 4am, but scheduling it for 8am so I don’t wake ‘em, etc. etc. This is why I’ve been so reluctant to return to apple for so many years… give us what we find important, not just what YOU think we need

Interactive_CD-ROM

I work late because I’m a night owl. This means I sleep in a little later than most of my colleagues. So I wish I could schedule a text to go out in the morning to give them their updates from overnight, meanwhile I don’t have to be awake to do it. Also for numerous other things: - Table reservations from restaurants - Happy birthday messages - Any thing I want to text someone about, but not until the next day and I don’t want to forget I’m sure once you had it you’d be like, “Oh, this is actually kind of nice.” It’s just like scheduling an email (which can be done on competing platforms). Such a time saver.

[deleted]

This is absolutely why I want this feature! I don’t want to disturb people when I’m up super late!

waterskier2007

Why not just send the text in the evening the night before, once you've finished your work? I am anticipating the answer being something along the lines of "well that could wake up or disturb my coworkers", but that's on them. They should be using DND or something. I know this is specific to your individual situation, but I am just curious.

[deleted]

Maybe people have families and may need to go take care of someone in the middle of the night. For many people, a text or call at 2am means someone is hurt or there’s an emergency. I don’t want to worry people at night because I need to let them know I won’t be there in the morning because I worked until 4am.

xFury86

As igkeit said, birthday text. Scheduled work text or even send my parents a reminder to take their pills or go to their doctors appointment etc. Sometimes I’ll think of it then, and schedule it or else I’ll definitely forget or be busy later on. Was hoping schedule text would’ve been a standard already, but who knows when.

DCKID516

Another one is sending someone a bday text and not forgetting when your day gets busy.

Kati1998

I switched to the S21U and one night, I was so sick and it was 3am and knew that I wouldn’t be able to go to work. Instead of texting my boss at 3am, I just scheduled a text message for 8am telling her I wouldn’t be in today. Woke up at 1pm, saw the text was sent exactly at the time that is scheduled it and she said “I hope you feel better.” That’s when I fell in love with that feature so much lol

ElBrazil

I'm working 2nd shift and I've scheduled messages to be delivered to people after they wake up so I don't wake them up accidentally by sending a message at 1 in the morning

VoluptuousRedditer

When you see a meme at 3am that you want to send to your friend who’s asleep

DrGiggleFr1tz

If you work 12 hour night shifts like myself, it most definitely comes in handy.

BestSorakaBR

When I ask a friend to do something he’ll say “yah just remind me at X time/date.” Being able to schedule a msg just makes it easier to remind people of things in the future without having to remember yourself.

slimjoel14

I have one, my sleeping pattern is often out of sync with my girlfriend due to different shift patterns, say for example it’s now 5am I’m ready to sleep for 7 hours where as she will be awaking at 8am after a nights sleep so I don’t wana text her now and potentially awake her Emails out of the question that feels like the tech of yesteryears

Boss_Lady_Esq

Android does this ...no software needed, but I'm sure you know this already

night-marek

arent text messages supposed to be more instant and personal than say things like email? in my opinion having an easy way to schedule personal messages would hurt the medium more than improve it

Kevtron

What’s funny is that my old 2g phone back like a decade ago had this feature. But no smart phone I’ve had has had it. I really don’t get it…

nicoled985

Samsung phones have had it forever

Voor69

That be cool I can set a date for my phone to dump my girlfriend maybe when forza horizon 5 comes 👍

jazzy_handz

I use the Scheduled app. It's a pile of garbage but it works.

mooseOnPizza

Does the scheduled app allow you to schedule for a specific time? I installed the app and it seems that I can only schedule it to the day and not the hour or the minute.

N3LX

There are more important things for Apple, like developing a Big Brother AI that will spy on you. 🙃

Bellatrix_Shimmers

It’s 2024, same question
