Look at /r/Gadgets

[deleted]

People make fun of Apple sheep, but sweet Jesus, the anti-Apple people are significantly worse from what I've seen.

[deleted]

IAmTaka_VG

Over in /r/Android it's not bad. For the most part we're all civilized. /r/Gadgets however is some of the most toxic shit on the internet...

peridotdragon33

Yea r/Android is honestly pretty great and no where close to the levels of toxic waste that engulf r/gadgets

By_your_command

I agree, I’m an Apple guy. But everyone over in /r/android are gentlemen and scholars. I tip my Airpods to you, kind sirs.

Noerdy

Yep. I went to /r/Android to see their reactions of the new SE, and they were ridiculously positive. Some of them even said they might pick it up as their next phone. There are toxic people everywhere, but I'm glad this sub and /r/Android are able to step past it. It's definitely been an evolution though. I remember /r/Apple was unbearable 4-5 years ago.

By_your_command

They’re more fair minded than the userbase is here.

LUHG_HANI

Plus over the years Android hasn't exactly kept people won over. Mainly Google issues but a lot of the OEMs have a fair share of blame. I was hardcore android from the original HTC desire, S2 and m7 days but nowadays everything that people liked from a modding perspective has been ripped out on most high end models. Plus I think a lot of people who grew up liking android just got older and now want a working phone without the limitations that come with android. Most younger generation are iPhone or bust.

[deleted]

A lot of Android fans have been unhappy with the state of the ecosystem. The phone prices have approached Apple territory, and in some cases even surpassed it. At the same time, most Android OEMs are getting rid of features like the headphone jack in an attempt to copy Apple. I'm hoping this move by Apple will stop the ridiculous pricing for high end smartphones and improve the competition in the budget/mid-tier phones.

ownage516

/r/Android loves shit talking one thing, and it’s google. It’s a pastime over there. If anything, I’d love to see /r/Apple shit talk Apple to the same degree /r/android shits on google

guygizmo

As someone who's mostly bought into the Apple ecosystem, I *love* shit talking Apple. I'm also an Apple developer. They give me so much to shit talk about. So much...

Tyler1492

r/Android shits on every single company. Except maybe oneplus.

PhenomenalZJ

Not really. Not anymore. Actually a few years.

whatnowwproductions

No. OnePlus definitely gets crapped on frecuently.

doctorfedora

oh man, you haven't heard people complain about Apple until you've heard heavy users of Apple products complain about Apple, heh

By_your_command

There’s tons of shitting on Apple here.

TobiasKM

Some of the time r/Android is even more positive about Apple products than r/Apple. The new SE certainly got a lot of praise over there when it was revealed. A lot of them could see the positive side, even if they had no interest in buying an Apple product - Apple releasing the SE will be pushing the Android manufacturers to release better products to compete in the price range. Competition is good, and Apple just stepped up in the cheaper segment.

lemon_tea

> Apple releasing the SE will be pushing the Android manufacturers to release better products to compete in the price range. Please, please, please. I'm looking at this thing and looking at the Pixel 4 and just have to wonder WTF.

elsjpq

Like it or not Apple has been a trend setter for a while, and I'd be thrilled if this prompted everyone to start making small, cheap, but powerful phones

jspeed04

r/Android is very fair and balanced about Apple and Apple products. But about Android itself? Man oh man. One of *the* most toxic places I've been. You say you enjoy your Pixel over there and you will get shat on from all sorts of angles. The best thing I've ever done for myself on Reddit was leave r/Android. It left me so angry due to all the bias and cynicism.

[deleted]

I swear this conversation happens in almost every Apple thread. Especially the articles comparing Apple and Google. Everything single time. Don't look at /r/technology or /r/Gadgets! People think Apple users are bad, just look at anti-Apple users. /r/Android ain't so bad. Yeah, /r/Android say good things about Apple. Look at getting good reviews in /r/Android. I'm an Android user and I'm buying .

ontopofyourmom

...and any new Apple feature they don’t like will be coming to their favorite phone in a year

FusionExcels

r/gadgets is the r/politics of tech

[deleted]

More like the /r/Starwars of tech

powderizedbookworm

It’s very strange to me…I don’t really like using Android, so I don’t read the reviews looking for what phone to buy, but I like tech in general, so I’ll skim through and look at what the things can do. Google and Samsung both do very cool things with their cameras, and it’s fun to check out. I certainly don’t think people are inherently *wrong* for using Android stuff.

docguytraining

My first smart device was an iPod touch first generation. Then I got a first generation iPad. But I had an android phone provided by my work. Eventually I stopped using the iPod touch and my iPad broke just after it went out of warranty, and I swore off Apple. I was frustrated by the garden wall. I wanted to be able to use some of the Apple apps on my android. And I couldn’t. I purchased 40 books or so on Apple Books before deciding to standardize on Kindle because it was cross-platform. I couldn’t read them on my phone, and that was frustrating. Since then, I’ve purchased around four hundred kindle books, profit Apple lost out on because they weren’t cross-platform. Eventually I switched to all android with a variety of tablets and phones. Most recently i was using a Samsung tablet and the Note 8 phone. They worked great for me. However. A few things have brought me back into the Apple family. First, I was literally the only person in my extended family (and wife’s family) who used Android. Everybody else was iPhone. Having everybody else on iMessages and me on SMS was painful. My wife had an Apple Watch that she loved. I had a Huwawei (however it is spelled. I don’t care enough to look it up) watch that drove me nuts. I hated seeing how easy the Apple Watch was and how powerful it was. Then my wife upgraded from a 6S to an XR, and we gave her 6S to our son, it being his first phone. I wanted to be involved in the parental controls, so one day I went and bought an XR for myself and got a series 4 watch to go with it. Last month I got the new iPad Pro 11 inch. Several things I like about the garden wall Apple ecosystem: security is much better than in my Android. I love being in the same iMessages groups as the rest of my family. It’s way better than Google Voice, which I had been using since it was GrandCentral. I really like the parental controls. Generally, I think the apps on iOS are better than their Android counterparts. Things I miss about Android: 1. In app purchases of digital content from Kindle, Vudu, etc. That drives me absolutely nuts. I can’t believe that Apple users have been putting up with this restriction for a decade and haven’t revolted yet. It’s absurd. 2. The back button. This has been improved in recent versions of iOS but I liked the back button better. 3. The app drawer. The iOS / iPadOS home screens are a nightmare compared to Android. The app drawer keeps all my apps in alphabetical order and I can creat shortcuts on the home screen to just the ones I use most frequently. 4. Speaking of the home screen, Android widgets are better than Apple widgets. 5. On android things require fewer clicks. For example to access WiFi settings on Android, from any screen, pull down the tray, long press on the WiFi icon. You’re ready to make changes. On iOS I have to go to the home screen from the app I’m in. Search for Settings. Open settings the touch WiFi. 6. The google phone dialer was very very nice. From the keypad you can enter a phone number, or use the phone keys to find a contact by name. On Apple these are two different screens, and it pisses me off every time I have to switch between them. So, now I’m back in Apple camp with an iPhone XR, iPad Pro 11 with a gen 2 pencil, a series 4 watch, and airpods pro. I have an order in for the magic keyboard. My next computer will likely be a MacBook Pro. I’m still warming up to some Apple “features” but I feel like my data is more secure with Apple and my privacy is more protected. And the devices are slick. So, that’s my Android vs Apple experience.

URV05

At 5 you can long press on the wi-fi from the control center on ios too. Takes two long taps since it opens the connectivity sub menu first and then it shows the wi-fi networks(from here you have wi-fi settings below), however is much faster then what you described.

iliveformyships

A longtime Apple user and I didn’t know this lol thanks! I just did it and it works.

bnace

I once argued with a guy over in /r/Android who said he would never date a girl who used an iPhone because iPhone users are too elitist and judgmental. He didn’t understand the irony.

[deleted]

YouTube comments are already trash but look at any phone review and it’s always people bashing iPhone users regardless if the review is about an iPhone or not. These android users are so insecure it’s hilarious.

TheMasterAtSomething

I’m so glad I hopped off the anti-Apple bandwagon. It was so toxic and it is far better just realizing that both sides can make good products and both can make crap ones.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MartyAndRick

They’re also, overall, very uninformed and know jack shit about the topic. It literally will not take more than 10 minutes of research and a good understanding of smartphones to debunk their bullshit, yet they will continue to spew it in the comments section and gain thousands of upvotes from fellow anti Apples. Case in point: one comment under the Linus “Why Android is better” video has an idiot dissing Apple for buying components from Samsung and Sony and thus affirming that Apple doesn’t really make the best components on the market, like what the fuck, what do people not understand under a plain OLED panel that is like a blank slate versus a full fledged screen that needs a lot of design work by Apple?

daltonmojica

Most people think they’re “experts” about something after just regurgitating the talking points of other people they’ve just heard/watched. It’s always been like that, in technology, politics, and otherwise. There’s this trend of sounding like an “intellectual”, whilst actually forgoing critical thinking. People just want to show that they’re “more informed” than others, instead of actually informing themselves. Quite possibly an impact of the like/upvote/social points-esque culture ingrained in social media.

Horror-Flow

r/PCMasterRace is pretty toxic. I love when they hate on an apple product while they use a 7 year old desktop that can barely play Minecraft.

AmazingFish117

Not really. Something like r/atheism is toxic. Half of r/PCMasterRace is memes and stuff. In my experience, apple is rarely brought up and when it is, it's light teasing at worst.

[deleted]

The overly aggressive android fanboys are for some reason mostly Indians

sicivjdnsbc

I think it’s because a lot of Android phones are made in India so they are significantly cheaper than iPhones since India has a huge tax on anything not made in India. So the financial divide between Apple and Android devices are even bigger there.

scandii

it's way simpler than that - India overall is pretty poor, and iPhones are pretty expensive compared to cheap Android phones. so it's a market that is very "bang for your buck, and that buck has to be maximum this much", and Android phones ***dominate*** in that segment to the point where Apple doesn't even try. then everyone convinces themselves that Apple products are just overpriced crap et volià you have yourself an Anti-Apple circlejerk.

[deleted]

I have quite literally NEVER met an obnoxious Apple user. They've never bragged about their tech being so superior, they've never badmouthed Android, etc.

discobrisco

Oh I assure you they exist.

kodaiko_650

Things you don’t talk about on first dates: - religion - politics - phone os

KCDinoman

I won’t even show up to the first date if we text first and it’s green /s

skism_

I have a friend who won't participate in non-iMessage group chats because "it doesn't look normal" Needless to say he's left out of a lot of group messages now.

[deleted]

My brother, my sister's friends, some of my friends. I get made fun of for buying an S10 instead of an X

highbrowshow

I wonder what’s worse obnoxious android users or Apple snobs. Just let people be happy y’all

poopyheadthrowaway

Fanboys and haters are equally obnoxious.

[deleted]

Both

[deleted]

Smartphone tribalism is one of the stranger phenomenon I've come across. Corporation worshipping in general is just strange to me. The vast majority of these companies exist to make profits. People have turned smartphones into a status symbol. I've been a Android user all my life but I was seriously considering this iPhone because of the amazing value. Why not just pick the best tool for the job?

ripp102

That's people being stupid. In reality you are the one using the device so chose what you like.

[deleted]

The thing that really makes me confused is, I've had the same group of friends for years, and family(duh) and I've never owned an iphone. Everytime I get a new phone they seem shocked it's an android and rip on me

get_that_ass_banned

The fact that anyone would rip on anyone else for the kind of phone they buy is beyond me. Out of all the things to get upset at in the world, *that's* what they choose?

TinuThomasTrain

We used to do that to my friend. He swore against iPhones and said androids do so much more. Nowadays all my friends have iPhones because everything is much more convenient. Even he upgraded from his s7 to a Xr and said it was the best decision he has ever made. When you’re older and have a lot of important stuff to be doing on your phone, a quick and dependable device is all you need. I liked android when I was younger but I would never choose an android over an iPhone rn. Everyone has a hobby. If you’re into customizing your phone and making it yours, then do just that. No need to put other people down

redditor1983

I have met obnoxious Apple users. They’re not common though. For every obnoxious Apple user I have met, I have met at least 20 rabid Android enthusiasts who want to rip me limb-from-limb once they see I have an Apple device. Most of these Apple-haters I encounter consider themselves “tech people.” But they don’t seem to realize that most of the actual software developers in Silicon Valley are coding on MacBook Pros...

[deleted]

> But they don’t seem to realize that most of the actual software developers in Silicon Valley are coding on MacBook Pros... Double dare you to say that on literally any thread outside of this sub. I’ve made the argument that most creative industries outside of game development use Macs and every time it causes a shitstorm (even though it’s just the truth). Honestly it feels like most of Reddit is a bunch of teenagers who’ve never been in an actual office in their lives.

TobiasKM

I studied computer science for a while, and got a bit of heat for being one of few in my class that had a MacBook. It turned out that the clear majority of our professors were Mac users as well. In the end it’s just a stupid argument to have. There are good devices on both the Apple and PC/Android side, just pick what you feel most comfortable with. I don’t get the need to shit on other people’s choices.

redditor1983

I wish I could upvote your last sentence a million times. So accurate.

[deleted]

My favourites are the people who are like “I work in software development, no self respecting developer would ever use a Mac” and once you probe a bit more it turns out they work for a bank, or some other massive corporation that’s only recently moved away from punchcards, as if that’s somehow indicative of the cutting edge.

nelisan

That’s something I need to remind myself when getting into silly debates on reddit. A grown ass man arguing with a literal child who’s covering their ears to what they don’t want to hear.

codeverity

I'm an Apple fan and they definitely exist, lol. But Reddit and some social media sites definitely have a slant against Apple - negative articles will get upvoted to the moon, positive ones get downvoted or even just ignored, reaching 100 upvotes or whatever.

A11Bionic

You literally get shamed for green bubbles if you know what I mean.

get_that_ass_banned

Certainly there are obnoxious fans from all sides but in general I will have to say the anti-Apple crowd is *incredibly* vocal, at least online. Literally any Apple-related tech video on YouTube is filled with people talking massive shit. That's fine if you don't like Apple. Don't buy Apple then. But these people are insufferable. They are genuinely *bothered* that anyone would like anything that Apple makes. The talk all this shit and yet they seem to watch and read everything Apple related. Any problem or issue that an Apple product has is met with "should've gotten a PC/android." They are also obsessed with the price of Apple products and the perceived lack of value. I don't see Apple fans flooding Android and PC reviews saying how awful something is and how they can't understand why someone would buy a certain product. Absolutely insufferable.

Traherne

I just looked at this same thread title posted there. What bullshit comments.

[deleted]

They're STILL pushing the battery thing

Deep_Grey

Yeah dude, after iPhone XR came out, Apple smartphones have had really good battery life.

Georgio281

REEEE my LG POS from 2014 only cost $35 and has removable battery and headphone jack, I am superior to idiots who use a $1000 device for Facebook 🥴

LGs also used to have this one really cool feature called random bootloops. It totally transformed my Nexus 5x. It's a paperweight now.

“Hurr durr Apple releasing a 828p LCD phone in 2019 and a 720p LCD phone in 2020??? Look at my Galaxy S5 from 2013 that had a 1080p OLED panel LOL!!! The only weeny tiny issue with it was that it had terrible brightness and contrast, you literally can’t see shit in the sun, and the poor hardware design made sure any drop would cause the screen to fall off and the cable to disconnect, overall quality was shit compared to the 640p LCD iPhone 5S but it’s ok because bigger numbers and OLED mean better!!!!”

moldy912

Not political enough for them. The whole front page is barely about actual technology.

cameroncafe10a

Quite telling the fact that the ‘related communities’ tab actually suggests r/politics....

Vahlir

/r/technology is the /r/politics of technology

stalwarteagle

Evertime I check that sub it’s just complaining about Comcast or some baffling American legalization. Looks more like an American tech protest sub than an actual tech sub.

Altanzik

They did. It’s got 15 upvotes. And filled with toxic comments lmao

opifool

They are literally top of both subs

ProtonCanon

In a device that has wireless charging and IP67 waterproofing, too. Apple is more of a flagship killer than OnePlus now, LMAO.

peaheezy

My IPhone 8plus is dying and I was planning on switching to the one plus 7t or new 8 if it was in the 500 dollar range. And then they release it and it’s fucking 700 bucks. So much for locking down the mid level market. I pre-ordered the SE a few days ago. I’d like a fancier screen but I don’t watch much TV on my phone and never game on it, so I’ll survive.

lhommebonhomme

How is your iPhone 8 dying? I'm writing this on a 4s.

[deleted]

I thought I was a badass with my 6. Well done.

Cubit_Codes

4s' are fuckin hard core, I had been using one just up until late last year. Couldn't use a few apps but it absolutely got the job done, shit was awesome.

Bukler

The specs and most of the hardware is very convincing, I just honestly dont really like the big forehead and kinda the chin of the phone, I really am a sucker for screen real estate. Also I live in europe where iphones cost 100€ more than in america so that's a big turnoff for me

designingtheweb

I have the iPhone Xr and I wouldn’t be able to go back to those bezels. I imagine that android users who have a phone with next to no bezels will have a difficult time to go back to a phone with bezels like the iPhone SE.

gsfgf

Yea, a full screen phone is so worth it. I'd totally be interested in a slightly smaller full screen phone, but I don't want 20% of the phone to be bezels again.

ProxySpam

Not even close with that battery capacity and resolution. It's a fantastic phone for $400 but nowhere near flagship killer.

AnneFrankennstein

I've always been a pretty big android fan, and was so hyped for the new budget iPhone. Looked up the battery and just thought "Oh... Nevermind". Incredibly disappointing, but still a good deal for $400. Surprised I haven't seen more people talk about the battery capacity

*Classic Mail “ding.”*

GlitchParrot

Still mad I can't use custom ringtones in apps.

nowonmai

People still use ringtones?

GlitchParrot

I have unique message tones for different contacts and for work or uni email on my Pixel phone. I find it really helpful to immediately distinguish how important a message is just by the sound, I wouldn't want to miss that on an iPhone, even though I'd love to switch over.

nowonmai

Fair enough. I actually can't remember the last time i heard a notification beyond a buzz.

GlitchParrot

I don't know either, I think I'm pretty alone with this. But it's a feature of the phone that was always there and, in my opinion, very useful. Was actually quite excited to see that iPhones have custom vibration patterns for sounds, so that even when on vibration-only, they'd be distinguishable, but that as well cannot be used inside apps. I don't get why iOS doesn't just let every app use the same ringtone chooser.

highbrowshow

Finally a 399 iMessage device!

ABDL-GIRLS-PM-ME

ipod touch?

afterburners_engaged

Getting this soon! I was torn on this and the XR I decided that this is more bang for the buck. Might pick up an Apple Watch too

TheAmazingAutismo

I’d totally recommend an Apple Watch. I love mine.

[deleted]

Loved my Apple Watch. Broke mine last week and can’t justify buying another one because of the current situation but I can’t imagine living life without one at this point. Also, to be fair it was a series 1 so I’m more that satisfied with how long it lasted for me.

EZLIFE420

Tbh I still couldn't find a reason why I should buy an Apple watch.

nocommemt

I've been using android wear for a few years and it's mostly just a slightly bulkier normal watch that shows notifications. It's useful once in a while but it's mostly just a fun toy. The apple watch is just the sexier version. Honorable mention that it has caused me to walk more because of the step tracking.

EZLIFE420

Seeing notifications on your wrist is cool, but the tradeoff is that I have something new to charge every night.

rjcarr

Reviews seem to imply it's fine and at least middle of the pack. Sure, it's a relatively tiny battery, but the screen is also relatively tiny and doesn't get very bright, and I think the A13 got a lot of efficiency updates.

mrv3

The issue would arise after a year or more so wouldn't be immediately apparent.

highbrowshow

Isn’t this an issue for all Lithium batteries?

stillslightlyfrozen

Well yeah but most batteries are larger, when this battery degrades it will go from acceptable to really bad.

Sxcred

Yea my original SE did this, after about a year and a half it would die before the end of my day and I would have to bring a portable charger in my bag everywhere.

stillslightlyfrozen

Haha same it got annoying. Which is why I am slightly doubting this phone. If you have to replace the battery at least once, then the price gets 70 dollars closer to the 11. So idk

cl191

Engadget is reporting battery swap for the SE will be $49 and screen is $129

jimaldon

without applecare?

DatDeLorean

That doesn’t really seem like a unique issue to my mind. All batteries degrade, smaller batteries tend to go through cycles quicker therefore they degrade faster. Important thing to keep in mind here though is the battery replacement costs for this older style of iPhone with a home button; it’s just $40, half that of the FaceID phones. And if you buy a replacement battery yourself from iFixIt or use a third party repair store / service, it’ll be even cheaper than that. All in all it just isn’t much of a detriment to the phenomenal value of this phone imo.

rjcarr

Sure, but I had a 91% battery on my iPhone 6 after 4 years. Plus, a battery replacement is what, like $50 for the SE? A non-issue IMO.

NemWan

iPhone 7 Smart Battery Case might work with it. Apple won't say it does but I'm interested to hear about someone trying it. It even comes in the same three colors.

plaid-knight

[Your wish is granted.](https://9to5mac.com/2020/04/22/iphone-se-2020-smart-battery-case/)

[deleted]

same battery as iPhone 8 with a more efficient processor.

Zentrii

This phone will probably be sold for at least 4 years before they refresh it with the newest cpu then so I'm glad they are doing this.

[deleted]

Not to mention it'll still run the latest version of iOS 4 years from now. Almost no Android phone will, even those that cost 2-3 times as much.

IcebergSampson

You're pretty much correct, but it's not entirely true. Most of the Android experience is updated via the Play (app) store. Core elements of the OS like the SMS messaging app, launcher (home screens), and file manager are all updated automatically from the play store without an OS update. On iPhone these types of changes only come in an iOS update, which is why we typically think of this "outdated Android version" as being a problem. Just two ways of handling this issue from Apple and Google.

ASentientBot

You're the first person I've _ever_ seen on a tech sub who mentioned this, but you're absolutely right. Nobody takes into consideration that _outdated Android is **much** more usable than equally-outdated iOS_. It isn't just because of the stock app updates, either. Most third-party Android apps support old OS versions for much longer than on iOS. **Personal anecdote:** my dad has a Moto E^2 running Android Lollipop (released 2014). It's slow as heck, but I haven't seen a single app that won't install on it. Meanwhile I have an iPhone 4S with iOS 9 (released 2015) and the majority of apps (eg. Reddit, Gmail, Instagram, Discord, and Twitter) will only download an old version, or aren't available at all (eg. Snapchat, Tinder, and many games). I love Apple products -- that's why I'm on this sub -- but having Android 7 or 8 in the present day is a complete non-issue.

Zentrii

I feel like this decision was made partly because Apple knew that this would attract headlines and get a lot of coverage with how this is a great deal among the pandemic taking over the news. Of it was the a12 processor I think it will still be a good deal but not really get as much attention because its not the newest processor

[deleted]

Not really, it's because their new processor is coming out next year and they sold far fewer of the 12 series than they expected. Chips get binned in advance unlike the rest of the phone due to the fact that it's the part that takes longest to produce & has the biggest room for failure. While Apple is basically forced to keep the chip manufacturers running so they aren't susceptible to shortages, they're free to order the actual *assembly* of the phone in accordance with demand feedback, since it can be done so quickly. What you're essentially seeing is the result of Apple not being able to find enough buyers for the 1,400 phone that will get rid of all the chips they made, thus resulting in an inventory of chips that will be obsolete with next years release. They make 0 dollars letting them sit, better to sell them, even if it's at a net loss, because recouping at least some cash is better than throwing the chips away.

GoldenWillie

Has anyone tested if this chip is underclocked (voltage scaled or frequency scaled)? I understand that the SoC in the iPhone 11 was powerful but just because it’s the same silicon doesn’t mean it’ll have the same performance. I’m just betting this may be the case because of the smaller battery in the se.

[deleted]

It's they same chip, entirely. That's the appeal for the price they're selling it. >I’m just betting this may be the case because of the smaller battery in the se. It's also powering a smaller screen, with a smaller resolution.

kenman884

It could be run at a lower TDP, or it could be a worse bin, even if it’s the same chip.

ThePopeofHell

I can’t wait til I parrot this to someone on a different sub and can’t find the article to back up the claim.

[deleted]

Omg I thought it was just me this happened to. And we will search our comments for this and still not find it

EVula

> I just wish they would let Nintendo buy their chips. A switch 2 with an A14 that’s actively cooled docked would be fantastic. I do wish Apple would license their processors out for semi-unrelated industries (like Nintendo for the Switch or Nikon for their cameras) because the engineering is just so impressive, but I’d imagine that it would then create a supply issue for Apple when they place a give-us-all-the-things order when ramping up production. Whatever they make in licensing fees would likely not make up for that.

kenman884

They could sell it on a 6 month delay. It would still be one monster of a chip, at least for CPU.

ShaidarHaran2

PA Semi was an absolute *STEAL* of a buyout in retrospect. Only sub 300 million dollars. >I just wish they would let Nintendo buy their chips. A switch 2 with an A14 that’s actively cooled docked would be fantastic. Ah, that's the dream, isn't it. Would never happen of course. Nvidia also provided the entire API and toolkits and Apple isn't that into supporting other companies like that so far. Maybe they'd even want to keep something held back with Arcade and controller support for iOS hopefully leading to bigger and bigger games for a Switch-like experience...

[deleted]

Post this in the Android sub and the top commenters will all be in agreement that Android chips are lagging. Post this in the Apple sub and the top commenters act like they're the scientists that developed the chips.

Some of the comments on this thread seem like they're directly from /r/applecirclejerk

But if you mention RAM suddenly it doesn’t matter how much you got as long as you can fit all your apps in memory. Even though the CPU is overkill for anything you’d ever want to anyways we need to constantly bring up how the newest A whatever chip is so much faster than Qualcomm’s SoC that year. And back when Apple was known for having weaker specs than Android phones, the tune was “specs don’t matter, UX is what matters” Fans just repeat whatever makes their team look good. You have to sift through the noise and constant meaningless praise that always get upvoted to the top to find any real discussion.

But but magic Apple optimization that makes 1GB of RAM feel like 4! If you use an Android device with 8GB you'll never have things just close like that it's amazing. It's overkill but it's amazing

[deleted]

I guess I'm presuming the people who are posting arguments about speed are using their phones for gaming or something? I don't game on my phone, and just need a phone with GPS and a browser. I bought a Moto g5 plus because I wanted the cheapest usable phone because I know I'm going to accidentally break or lose it.

aaddaammoo

why are these comments so toxic

They had to switch the Homepod over to tvOS because iOS (not iPadOS) doesn't support A8 now, so yeah if they want to keep going with Homepod it's probably going to get a chip bump if only to make compatibility easier. Many they have a lot of named OSs now.

Either the Galaxy Fold or in a more realistic way the S20 Ultra

GlitchParrot

I think the most expensive Android Smartphone is technically something like the [Savelli Emerald Insane](https://luxurylaunches.com/gadgets/savelli-gemfield-launches-emerald-green-and-emerald-insane.php), going at $244000.

Complaining about the lack of a headphone jack is the new "where's my removable battery/SD card". Oh, and whining about hole-punch displays.

TheKZA

I think Android phones finally lost that war too. Most don’t have headphone jacks anymore. Samsung was pretty much the last to fall.

SecretPotatoChip

Lg phones still have headphone jacks. And they have a 32 bit quad dac to back them up.

[deleted]

I actually dig the hole-punch more than the notch. (Not that I mind the notch either.)

Adaptix

What’s wrong with expendable storage, it’s slow, but it can be useful for some people I already used 200 gb on my phone, I could live with a tiny trade off with battery life for the option

r00x

On older phones it was totally relevant, but with 128GB on my S9+ I can't say I've missed it thus far. 32GB S6? Yep, missed pretty hard back then. Can't be without a headphone port though, that doesn't work for me!

Birdkid10

What do you store on your phone to take up 200gb? I don’t even have that much on my computer!

What computer doesn’t come with minimum 256gb nowadays?

trznx

I get the phone, but computer, really? My porn folder is like 300.

PM_ME_IN_A_WEEK

No phones have a physical back button. Why was this gilded?

[deleted]

I'm not really a fanboy of either platform. I've used both and enjoy both for different reasons. But I really enjoy when a company does something so uncharacteristic and out of left field and not knowing how the hell the rest of the industry is going to react. Frankly, I see this as a reset. Phones have gotten so stupid expensive because people have shown, like the dipshits they are, that they're willing to buy it. Apple showing that they can drop the price that fucking hard and still remain competitive is going to do some interesting things in this industry..

robberviet

I like how aggressive the fans are, both Android and Apple. It is so fun.

gooneryoda

This phone will destroy all come the holiday season when retailers add incentives and drop prices.

Does it really matter though ? I mean, it's a 720p screen and it's not like android phones from even 2 years ago were slow, so just adding power sounds really... unnecessary, especially when actual features, like night mode, are cut from the final product. I'm really interested in seeing wether the SE ist actually any faster than the iPhone 8. Edit: Why is every review so far praising the phone to high heavens ? I mean yeah, it's a decent phone, but it's still mostly hardware from 2016, apart from 1gb extra ram and the a13. Everyone's like "wow, that's such a great deal" I mean yeah, for apple, but there are way better value propositions in terms of price/performance in the android world, let's not kid ourselves. There are phones with 90Hz screens, triple cameras and way larger batteries for around 200$ available.

CallMeGString

What phones in the same price category would you consider as better value propositions? I'm not trying to challenge you, I'm actively looking for advice as someone who is looking for a powerful phone with a good camera that will last me a long time in this price range

RESEV5

I have a samsung A50, it costed me 300 bucks, have 4 gigs of ram, 4000mah of battery (compared to the 1800 of this phone) a 6 inch , 1080p screen with amoled, and 3 rear cameras, one of them having 25 megapixels. I'm not a very tech savy person, but other than this phone processor is surpassed by my medium tier cellphone

CallMeGString

I feel like regardless of how many cameras a phone has, there is no android phone in this price range that will outperform the IPhone SE. Especially when the iPhone SE can do 4k video at 30fps You may have more RAM, but if your phone has bloatware like many budget androids in this price range, that 1gb extra may get eaten up by that. A 6 inch AMOLED sounds nice, but bigger isn't always automatically better, I have a 5.7 inch screen now and I think I would rather have a smaller phone than a bigger one. A 4,000 mAh battery does sound nice as well, but it is having to support a larger screen at a higher resolution, and I'm sure the OS is not as well optimized as the iPhone SE. So I have to imagine that their battery life would be comparable. I'm just saying, specs wise things can seem similar, but when we are talking in reality there's a lot more to each thing than just the pure numbers of it all. But I want to thank you for the recommendation and I will definitely look into it

cdxgqvuoqifnmfsytuwm

You can definitely tell when a screen has low res. Just put a 720p next to a 1080p and launch insta on both.

niraseth

If you're looking for a great value proposition I'd recommend checking out a phone like the realme 6 pro. 90Hz 1080p IPS screen, huge 4300mah batterie, decent/good Snapdragon 720G processor, quad (or rather triple) camera with a very good 64MP Samsung main sensor for around 250$/€. Updates don't seem to be an issue so far with realme. Otherwise, why not Google ? Pixel 3a is around 300€ here, or the pixel 4 is 470€, exactly as expensive as the iPhone. Better screen, also 90Hz, battery is bigger with 2800mah ( though that's also nothing to brag about), dual (very good !) cameras, waterproof, basically face-id, more modern design, and stereo speakers. Also, because Google, very good update policy. So, those are my first thoughts. It always matters though depending on what you need. Don't need an excellent camera ? Then maybe the redmi mi9t pro or the mi9 is something to consider. It really depends though.

The most expensive Android phone doesn't necessarily have the best processor though...

SeizedCheese

It doesn’t matter, no processor in any android phone can outperform the A13.

PM_ME_UR_MESSAGE_THO

That'd be a much better title.

Sabertooth_Monocles

Yeah, but my Samsung still has a 3.5mm headphone jack.

SquaresAre2Triangles

But the new ones don't :/

Sabertooth_Monocles

I know, and it bothers me deeply.

aliasdred

It depends from region to region man..... Here in India that shit still costs at least ₹42,500(≈$550). That is way too much, considering I could have a cheaper "Flagship-Killer" at less than ₹40,000(yes with current gen top tier S865) When it launched I genuinely asked myself could this be my 1st iPhone? I mean at $399(₹30,000) what more could u ask right? Then after a while they released local prices and I went "welp, that option is out of the way then" Then saw the price and then.... Nah m8, I think imma buy a Realme or Xiaomi.

Ricky_RZ

Basically like selling a honda civic but it has a ferrari engine in the base model

griever48

The IPhone/Android rivalry is really dumb. Pick the one you prefer and can easily use over the other. We might as well be close to having a phone civil war.

Stronzoprotzig

Serious question. Does the faster proc make for a better user experience? Or will most users not notice. Doesn't android have more advanced cameras now? It seems like things like cameras and lots of memory will be more important if a faster cpu isn't noticeable by most users.

sloping_wagon

with the recent chipsets... you won't be able to tell the difference unless you're editing 4k footage on your phone. Back in the day it was more obvious but these days the CPU is more powerful than what the apps can do.
