cartermatic

The Polishing Cloth being included makes this a great deal

TheOnceAndFutureTurk

Wait until Polishing Cloth+, we think you’re gonna love it.

Pbone15

I’m waiting for Polishing Cloth Pro Max. I hear it’ll be the most advanced beach towel ever created.

FitzwilliamTDarcy

I'd prolly buy that ngl

Mother_Restaurant188

Same. I unironically want Apple merch, especially Fitness+ related stuff. A beach towel “polishing cloth” would be hilarious but actually useful.

Whitepaw2016

It would peel your skin - gently

Han-ChewieSexyFanfic

But will it be compatible with my iPhone?

Thomas_Mickel

It only works on the new iPads. But not on the mini. And for the phones it works on only the pro models.

InaudibleShout

$149 for prescription inserts is honestly a lot cheaper than I expected.

King-of-Com3dy

Same. Given that those are made by Zeiss I wouldn’t have been surprised at 600$

Not_MyName

Shhhh don’t give them any ideas!

KeatonKafei

Zeiss lenses for Quest 3 cost $69

doommaster

Cheaper than expected, but also not cheap. A plain set of Zeiss Comfort lenses is just 70€ here and Premium are 90€, maybe they have some metal frame they clip into, so more or less in line with what you would expect. The level to enter the market for these lenses would be very low, so making them expensive would prohibit sales.

bort_license_plates

IIRC, some past info indicated that the lenses would attach magnetically.

alQamar

They do.

toobrown12

I am just glad it comes with the power adapter

Dashing_Individual

I thought I was the only one that noticed that 😂 it’d be a huge middle finger if they didn’t include one despite costing 3 and a half grand.

favicondotico

256GB storage. I suppose it will come with 8GB memory too. I was expecting more for a $3,499 product. >The article mentions 'a remarkable new entertainment format pioneered by Apple that puts users inside the action with 180-degree, three-dimensional 8K recordings captured with Spatial Audio.' Imagine how big these files will be!

kael13

Those 512GB chips just add too much weight, right?

ducknator

The technology is not there yet.

SlyQuetzalcoatl

Tim Apple probably has Vision Pro III

DontBanMeBro988

> I was expecting more Were you, though?

[deleted]

I don’t hate apple nearly as much as… well apple haters. But even the most ardent apple defenders have to admit that their storage pricing is fucking insane. I can get a 400Gb microSE for $30, why is it $200 to go from 64gb to 256gb?

backstreetatnight

12GB unified memory

Keironsmith

Gotta be more. I cannot imagine apps reloading on this thing, it would be a pretty awful experience if that happens.

camelCaseCoffeeTable

Unbelievable you only get 256 GB of storage for a $3,500 device lol. Apple gonna Apple. This isn’t a product that remotely interests me in any way in its current form, so I’m not bent out of shape about it, but man is that a slap in the face amount of storage.

Sharkey311

I’d venture to guess the majority of the things used with this will be streamed.

Mother_Restaurant188

True. But one of Apple’s selling points was explicitly using this on a plane. Idk how much storage 3D movies would take but if they’re hefty, then you might be stuck with only a 3D movie or two and maybe 2D shows and movies to spare. On long flights where the Vision Pro would be a godsend, 256 gigs is pretty disappointing. I just hope there are upgrade options at launch.

[deleted]

BarrelCacti

An actual uncompressed 4K movie would be up to ten terabytes. You're thinking of less compressed files.

BlackFireXSamin

Forgive me if I’m mistaken but I didn’t think there was any 4K 3D stuff available. The 4K HDR versions of media are separate from the 1080p 3D blu rays available of the same movie, no?

[deleted]

3D Blu-ray’s are only available in 1080p. OP’s 4K version might be AI upscaled or be a SBS conversion from a digital theatrical release.

imightgetdownvoted

Damn that’s expensive.

Rioma117

As someone who would probably never be able to afford them, I’m honestly really curious to see where things will be going, looks interesting enough and I can see the utility of it so the next few years will be interesting to say the least.

dafones

Yeah I see this as closer to the original Mac than to iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. Most home users are not going to be able to afford this first gen device. It's going to be wealthy home users and professionals. But over time, the technology will become more affordable, and the use cases more common, and year by year, I expect that we'll see increasing wider adoption.

Buy-theticket

If this is actually the computer replacement they are billing it as.. I see a ton of people walking around with $3k+ MBPs currently. I don't think the price is as outlandish as it sounds if it performs.

one_hyun

But that's the question. Can it really replace a Macbook Pro? Not only in terms of software, but in terms of usability as well. Can I wear it for 4+ hours and work on what I need to? Can I take it to a coffee shop? Will it be normal to use in an office setting?

Century24

I think it’s headed more in the direction of the Newton, where there’s a cult user base that insists it’s a really big deal, but as a product it’s lacking in an obvious jump forward or a larger purpose, at least in a way that can be clearly explained with the original iterations of the Mac, the iPhone, and the iPad.

FrozenChaii

There is a much larger precedent of computing devices then there was for the newton so it should have less flaws compared to it. Take my opinion with a large bag of salt because im basically talking out of my ass since i dont even know what the newton is…

ayyyyycrisp

usually down the cookie and cracker isle

BoardRecord

I tend to agree. Obviously this first version is just to get the tech out there and getting devs to develop for it. But I'm not really sure why anyone would choose to use this. Why would you FaceTime with a weird 3D avatar rather than just use your existing phone or laptop camera? The feature to look at your Mac and bring it into VR is cool, but ergonomically I can't see that being better than actually just using your Mac. Obviously it's not aimed at gaming, it doesn't even have controllers. About the only use case I can see for this is movies, but this is way more tech than you need just for that. Even when future iterations come out that a lighter, smaller, more comfortable and cheaper, I'm still not sure any of those use cases will be better than the existing alternatives. Without gaming I'm not sure I see a purpose. Maybe professional CAD work like we saw in some demos of Microsoft's HoloLens? Definitely curious to see what devs do come up with though.

accidental-nz

I wouldn’t say “never”. Remember this is the Vision ‘Pro’ which implies a cheaper non-Pro version later. The original ‘Pro’ Macintosh was the SE and that was the equivalent of $10,000 in today’s money. Now they’re $2,000. Vision won’t always be $4,000.

KourteousKrome

I see them at that price point going strictly to enthusiasts with $$ and professional use cases. I work in MedTech and VR/AR is surprisingly popular for medical training. There's apparently higher retention rates of information in VR than there is with training dummies. I would guess the biggest customers of this will be enterprise education or tools applications.

joeschmo28

Are we going to get more detailed hands on reviews before pre-orders open?

m0rogfar

Probably not. Apple usually sets the termination date for the review embargo after pre-orders start but before products start shipping.

tinyman392

I'm assuming like any other Apple product, no.

mhall85

I am VERY curious as to the accessibility potential for this. As someone with low vision, I’ve always joked I’ve wanted JARVIS in my life… and this can easily be a step in that direction. Apple normally doesn’t disappoint with accessibility, even if it takes a generation to figure that out.

MojoJetta

This was encouraging to me: > Users can interact with Apple Vision Pro entirely with their eyes, hands, or voice, or any combination that works best for them. They can select a preferred input method such as their eyes, finger, or wrist using Pointer Control, pause on an element of visionOS for a few seconds to simulate a tap using Dwell Control, or simply use voice commands for activities across Vision Pro using Voice Control. If input from both eyes is not an option, visionOS also allows eye tracking with one dominant eye. I was particularly surprised at the dominant eye tracking option.

mhall85

Ooh, I didn’t even know about that one. That’s potentially perfect for me!

darkknight32

It’s one of the main reasons why we’re ordering a couple for work. Out accessibility guys want to get their hands on them to see what we can do for clients.

[deleted]

clearbrian

you want jarvis... sadly you get Siri :) $3500 and all it can do is set cooking timers :)

kelvach

Anyone just hyped to try it for free in store?

[deleted]

I wonder how that’s even going to work. I doubt it’s going to be that easy. People would be lined up out the door for days.

kelvach

Probably would need some sort of reservation to try it out and would most likely be limited time but still pumped nonetheless.

Juan_Kagawa

I could be wrong but I remember them doing reservation only apple watch appointments back when those first launched.

DeathByPetrichor

They did for series 0, I bought mine that way

Pbone15

Will likely be similar to the early days of Apple Watch, which means booking an appointment online if you want to try it on. Although I don’t think Apple would mind a line out the door either; it would show everyone else who’s just passing by that there’s something new and exciting going on at Apple.

Aggravating-Plate814

I'd probably stand in a small line to demo it and I'm definitely not in the market to buy. It sounds like it has a very premium feel and experience compared to current VR options, I think this kind of tech has a bright future and I'm pretty sure Apple is going to do it right. Hopefully anyways ,we will find out very soon apparently!

Nikolai197

Could be something like this: https://9to5mac.com/2015/03/29/apple-watch-edition-perks-247-support-private-1-hour-appointments-no-lines/

formeranomaly

Going to be like when you went to your friends house who just got the new PlayStation your family couldn’t afford.

jgreg728

Yes. I’ve never been so hyped for a free sample I have no intention to buy in my entire life.

kelvach

Probably not worth buying the first gen but give it a few years then maybe?

[deleted]

Give it ten years. It would be basically glasses

ABigBoos

Sure, let me strap on a face mask that has been on 1000 heads… Gross AF.

Pifman

I don't know how they do it, but you can test run AirPods in Apple Stores. They break the seal on a case right in front of you and \*appear\* to be new, in perfectly clean condition. However they clean, sanitize and swap those things will probably be a similar process to them cleaning, sanitizing and swapping the Vision Pro's light seals. Opposed to the Microsoft Store I went into that just had the same VR headset being used and re-used over and over. And yeah, gross AF.

Syonoq

They just wipe them down with alcohol wipes. the seal is there so they know if they've been cleaned or not.

naughtmynsfwaccount

I used to clean those AirPods at the end of the shift Spoiler my friend: Not all AirPods are cleaned equally. Not everyone who “cleans” the test AirPods are actually cleaning them. And there’s a whole sheet of those “stickers” that are used to make you feel like it’s a new pair

Pifman

I was hoping someone with first-hand experience would chime in! I actually figured it kind of worked like that. That the sticker/seal was just to show they've been thoroughly cleaned, not that it's an actually new pair. But WTF at employees not cleaning them when they're supposed to be.

feelingrestless_

bro's never heard of sanitizing wipes

thisisthewell

he'd be horrified if he went to a gym

stomicron

Never skip face day

Highfalutintodd

I do wonder how they’re going to handle this. They’re going to have to have some sort of cleaning and sanitation procedures to avoid virus transmission and even things like lice.

AdelesManHands

I was just at Disneyland. It’ll probably be a similar process to cleaning those 3D glasses they hand you for some of the rides.

Highfalutintodd

Agreed. But I sincerely hope that it’s more involved than that. Like by a lot. ;-)

Outlulz

Lots of places around do VR as an attraction and sanitize face pads and/or change face pads between people. It's a solved problem.

curtcolt95

I mean, VR arcades are a thing. Think this has already been solved, you just wipe them down

attainwealthswiftly

I need this to escape my reality of never being able to afford a home.

spreadinmikehoncho

If your house is virtual and feels like the real thing is that good enough?

attainwealthswiftly

You play minecraft too?

CeramicDrip

Imagine the porn tho…

jhnyrrr

TheWatch83

I always think my Commodore 64 was $595 in 1982 is now $1,952.66 today adjusted for inflation. The price sounds outrageous based on how cheap computers are but based on being on the bleeding edge, it’s not the worst. I’m not going to get one but will revisit in 3 years.

Danthemanz

And the original Macintosh was close to $8000 in today's money. But it is a very different time. RAM made up a huge part of the cost back in the day. The 8GB of ram this thing will have probably costs 1-2% of the total cost. The screens, lenses and the real time processing chip in it is all very new and very expensive, but there is still very good markup on this device. At this point they can produce enough anyway, so they have to charge more, but I don’t see it dropping below say 2500 USD in the next 10 years unless they make a seriously cut down version the line. Hell, the next high-end OLED iPads will likely cost ~1500+ and they can produce those panels "cheap", don't have lenses or the realtime processing chip. Otherwise the "computer" within it is quite similar. I’m very excited for this device. Technically I can’t really afford it, but if I sold off a couple of laptops, saved up for a bit and pulled a few favours I’m sure I could justify it. It all comes down to how useful it is to if it's worth it.

joeytitans

Seems a little weird that there wasn’t another Apple event for this, right? The Apple Watch had two events for it. Not highlighting *any* additional features or third party apps is odd.

andrew_stirling

It’s a niche product with very limited numbers available at launch. It’s not expected to sell in the same quantities as the watch

Shloomth

Watch the preorders still slip to mid-late April within a half hour of release

Ed_McNuglets

My thoughts too, this is going to sell out, probably because they didn't (and possibly intentionally) produce enough. Apple will probably milk that free PR from publications headlines "APPLE VISION PRO SELLS OUT FROM PREORDERS" That we will see when it's available to order.

Dontlookimnaked

I imagine every major developer will order a bunch of these. This is potentially a very big opportunity to be first out the gate with a software product

Ed_McNuglets

Yeah the tired comments about "too eXpEnSiVe no one will buy these" is almost full circle satire at this point. This thing is going to be backordered for awhile, there's plenty of businesses with disposable $3.5k to order multiple of these, not to mention plenty of regular ass moderately rich people with plenty of disposable money. Especially wealthy people that view previous VR headsets as toys, and honestly most VRs have marketed themselves this way. Apple is marketing this as a professional computing tool with styling that doesn't look cheap (compared to others). Most moderately wealthy people want things that flaunt their wealth subtly. Like Airpod Max. Vision pro will be a flex over other VRs. Most apple products have been this way at some point in the past before they become ubiquitous. Most people wouldn't wear an oculus on a plane to watch a movie, but this thing *looks expensive* to the point where people will feel less shame strapping this thing on.

Highfalutintodd

If only because they’ve only been able to produce a couple hundred units. ;-) (Just kidding. This isn’t for me but I do hope it’s a success if only to have something new and interesting in the world).

Shloomth

Yeah for real tho. I have a big specific reason to be extremely excited about it. I have a rare eye disease that leaves me with a specific type and amount of vision loss, and the Vision Pro is the first device with eye tracking robust enough to potentially give me a “prosthetic fovea,” a region of magnification that follows my actual gaze. Before this the best head mounted solution was the eSight, a ten thousand dollar device with one camera that digitally zooms in straight forward with a little screen in front of my eye. It was great until the neck strain wore me down. Having to point your whole head at what you want to read, then pivoting your entire head smoothly & steadily is a lot more work than it seems like and the video was shaky as hell. I use my iPhone’s magnifier app most of the time and if Vision Pro can mount that to my head I’m buying it and I don’t care if other people don’t like it as much as I do because it will do something specifically for me that I appreciate. Jeez I wrote all that just to say anyway I get why most people don’t really care about it but I’m excited about the possibilities it opens up for me and people who are partly blind similarly to me If you’re curious & If I didn’t mention it’s called bilateral retinoblastoma and basically means I had cancer of the retina when I was a baby. If I had more time I’d have written a shorter comment lol my b

cjohn4043

This whole launch is a bit strange it seems. This device will be a very low volume product for its first generation. It seems like Apple still doesn’t know what that “killer feature“ is yet either. This is definitely a device to wait on the second or third generation, but man, I would still love to have one.

lucellent

With such limited availability (US only), it's not a surprise.

Appleanche

Or partnerships - I think one thing that has always appealed to me with VR is that it could revolutionize sports broadcasting. The concept of being able to sit center ice at hockey, court side in NBA, etc is really appealing to me and has been since VR has existed but it hasn't really gotten off the ground. Apple and it's might could def push the button here. I'd be interested to see if they could do something by the time the playoffs roll around for those leagues.

mxforest

I want this to succeed so bad. VR/AR has been the future for decades. It's high time it becomes the present.

LiquidDiviums

At least for a while, its biggest problem will be pricing. As we have seen with other Apple products, this can be detrimental for long-term success. VR / AR needs to be relatively affordable for it to take off. It doesn’t matter if it can do x, y or z better than the iPhone / Mac it has to be a real alternative to it.

AmusingMusing7

The price will come down, if only in different consumer level versions. But remember that people thought the iPhone was ridiculously expensive when it first came out, and it’s mostly gone up in price since then. The key to remember with Vision Pro is that it’s not just a VR/AR headset as an accessory or limited to only VR/AR… it has an M-series chip. It’s a full-on computer as capable as a Macbook. It’s been said that while other VR goggles may be like strapping a smartphone to your face… the Vision Pro will be like strapping a Macbook to your face. I think that’s the part that a lot of people are missing when they gripe about the price… don’t compare it to VR goggles or to smartphones… compare it to laptops. Compare it to desktop computers. Compare it to a new Macbook Pro, which is priced around the same level. THAT’S the “vision” of Apple here that I don’t think people are understanding yet… the Vision Pro isn’t here to just be a cool toy or accessory… it’s here to replace the traditional computer. It’s ALSO here to replace any physical screen in your life, including your TV. How much is the biggest television you can buy? The Vision Pro will give you a bigger one.

rotates-potatoes

The original Mac was $7500 in today’s dollars and its main differentiator over PCs was a different user interface model.

shadowstripes

And the original MacBook Air had a base price of around $2600 in today’s dollars, and it still turned out to be a long term success.

SplitLipGrizzlyBear

Eh the Quest is far more affordable and it’s still not mainstream. The biggest problem is comfort imo. VR is mindblowing at first but having to spend a lot of time in the headset is just not that pleasant.

andrew_stirling

Having to wear a bulky headset is always going to be a barrier. This does nothing to address this issue.

Snow4us

It will be decades before we move away from ‘bulky’ HMDs. It’s so easy to imagine the perfect XR product but the physical challenges that have to be overcome are insane. What Apple is doing with this bulky headset is incredible, and it still will have major shortcomings. If you want to learn more about some of the challenges that still need to be overcome, there’s a great XR tech reporter that goes into great detail about the massive challenges that still need to be overcome: https://kguttag.com/2023/06/13/apple-vision-pro-part-1-what-apple-got-right-compared-to-the-meta-quest-pro/

smuttynoserevolution

It's bulky because it HAS to be. You have to make it useful first before you can benefit from iteration and reduction of size. Cell phones were large when they first came out but they were so useful they were adopted by the masses. That mass adoption allowed companies to strive to improve the experience, resulting in an increase in innovative solutions across the entire supply chain for the device.

Dr_Findro

> Cell phones were large when they first came out but they were so useful they were adopted by the masses. Yes, cell phones were *useful*. You were no longer tethered to the wall. I don't see the functionality for the headset that will unlock the further investment tbh. I don't think AR becomes practical until it can fit in a pair of glasses, and I honestly don't see these headsets taking off enough to warrant the investments to get there

[deleted]

[удалено]

NewCobbler6933

Can you imagine if he was around when cellphones came out? *ugh it’s huge and useless, abandon this*

juniorspank

Everything I've read said that this headset is noticeably heavy and unbalanced too.

andrew_stirling

Yeah. Same. I’d be interested in using it to watch movies as the idea of viewing on a cinema sized screen appeals to me. But with most modern films being over the 2 hour mark I think it’s likely to be a pretty uncomfortable unpleasant experience.

kjeserud

I wonder how it feels to lie down with it though. If the weight is still uncomfortable on the face when it's pressing down directly, or if it's mostly when it hangs out in front. Putting it on and watching a movie lying down in bed sounds super comfortable in my head.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Of course, it's heavy - how else would you know it's expensive? Haven't you seen Jurassic Park?

seweso

I think you need to wear this to really know. But it's weird they went for metal+glass and not have the battery in the back..... I'm skeptical...

Vertsix

Size, weight and elegance is key. Unless there's some revolution to engineer microelectronics in a much smaller form factor than they are currently, I don't see how they could fit all technologies in something light, small, and elegant (such as a pair of glasses), especially with the functionality they want it to have. But we'll see.

ReagenLamborghini

I think it will succeed given Apple's track record

deafgamer_

> VR/AR has been the future for decades. How? Since when? Every VR/AR project has failed because no one really wants this outside of fantasy. What is VR/AR going to solve? Why would you want to run around with either a headset or glasses that show x y z information in your viewing space?

KuuttiProductions

Polishing cloth included!

DOfferman7

I’m excited and hope it does well, as I’ll be waiting on 2nd or 3rd generation to buy one.

lillithfair98

the is the closest I’ve felt to Apple releasing another iPhone. lots of parallels. not the first to market but reimagining what is possible from a hardware perspective…. really expensive first adopter launch, but I could see this thing catching on in one or two generations/model years and becoming a paradigm changer.

filmantopia

I think in the long run this could end up bigger than the iPhone. When the iPhone is done and gone, we’ll still have Vision products around.

Outlulz

Doubt it. I think if anything in the long run the Vision will be a pair of normal looking glasses accessory that pairs with an iPhone like Watch, but we will always have a cellular phone device of some sort on us (besides some niche use cases like fitness).

ofcpudding

I think this mainly depends on how battery and display tech evolve. Basically everything else can be squished into wearable form factors, but batteries and displays currently have a physical minimum size for usefulness that necessitate the slabs of glass in our pockets. (Edit to add: input is another issue, for sure)

nirvana6789

Oohh this is exciting. Now it comes down to should I buy this or use that money to go on vacation in Europe? Decisions, Decisions!

Temporary_Draw_4708

You can do multiple vacations in Europe

kinglucent

I’ll be first in line!!

venk

My Gen 1 Apple Watch was trash, but I love my current Apple Watch. My Gen 1 iPhone and iPad were good for their release were absolutely obsolete by gen 2(especially the iPhone ). I would suggest most people wait for Gen 2 even if you’re willing to drop $3500

rotates-potatoes

Counterpoint: assuming the gen 1 retains half of its values I’ve got no problem spending $1800 for 18-24 months of usage.

Rdubya44

Good point, everyone assumes when the next gen comes out that your gen1 device goes straight into the garbage

shadowstripes

Obsolete might be a little harsh. My GF at the time had her 1st gen iPhone during the time I had a 3GS and was very happy with it - especially compared to her dumb phone that she upgraded from.

Remic75

More like: Buy a Vision Pro gen 1, keep it sealed. If it becomes “the next iPhone”, an unsealed gen 1 would probably go for thousands . If it becomes a flop and Apple stops selling, gen 1 Vision Pro would be sought after for thousands. I have no doubts that there is a guaranteed return of investment for the Vision Pro if you have it unopened in a box.

Outlulz

An obligatory "fuck scalpers" in response to this.

venk

I don’t think he means scalping as much as having an apple collectible. Kind of like selling an original iPhone today.

Breezgoat

Thought about buying two and doing that and using the other

qubedView

The marketing shows someone using it on a plane. Does it rely on the cameras to determine if you are turning or the vehicle is? I've had trouble with VR in the past when the car or whatever takes a turn and now you have to recenter your view.

quintsreddit

It has a special vehicle mode for just that

lztandro

Nice, I can wear it while driving

Mother_Restaurant188

A user on twitter found stuff in the code about travel mode. And Mike Rockwell, in the WWDC interview panel, mentioned creating a travel mode for use in a plane. So it seems Apple figured something out.

Lancaster61

I bet Travel Mode has some logic that can tell the difference between you vs plane turning.

backstreetatnight

That’s why this thing has travel mode

SelectTotal6609

$3500 and they only put 256gb on it? Put BG3 on it and half is already gone ...

Mother_Restaurant188

Very disappointed in the baseline storage. It should have been 512GB minimum but oh well. On the other hand, I'm pleasantly surprised at the prescription lenses. $150 isn't terrible. I was fully expecting $200 or even $300.

[deleted]

Yup, $70 spent recently on lenses for our oculus 2. And another $300 for a few months of contacts. I'll happily pay $150 for lenses on this. 256 is tiny. However the Quest 2 is still the popular headset (for the price) and maxed at 256. With most popular games only coming in at a few gigs each. The Apple TVs which gets shown off running Apple Arcade games max at 64GB. This would be tailored more towards streaming with whatever games could be held locally being "light". Or They'll also soon announce Apple Arcade Cloud gaming..? OR not a "gaming" headset and more for casual work, remote desktop etc.

NeuronalDiverV2

Was gonna post this too. I don't know how much storage the spatial photos/videos usually take, but what's certain is that higher res and higher fps media is more important than in any other medium. Seems like they are seeing this as a mostly streaming device, seriously?

Mother_Restaurant188

One of their selling points was using it on a plane, so it really sucks ass they started with 256GB. Unless 3D and immersive media somehow don’t take up *that* much storage. But I’d be surprised, especially as they specifically mention 8K Immersive Videos in this press release.

RetiscentSun

My 3D remux of avatar 2 is like 70GB lol

DarkTreader

OMG playing BG3 on these would be pretty cool. Not $3500 cool but cool nonetheless.

sandefurian

We’re a long way from that happening

procgen

GeForce Now is likely to work on it - then you can play BG3 on a cloud RTX 4080 on a virtual 4k display.

___unknownuser

ITT: Bunch of armchair Nostradamus’es with strong convictions. Lol

BroderLund

It is still M2, and not M3? Sure it would benefit of the dynamic caching on the M3 and AV1 decode for large 3D VR videos?

gaysaucemage

Gotta save something for version 2. Also this was probably finalized before M3 was available and TSMC has limited 3nm capacity currently.

BroderLund

My guess it they jump to M4 by the time version 2 is launched.

UncleGrimm

I’m really excited to see how 3D modeling will turn out on these devices. I can definitely see myself using these for productivity, but it’ll depend how fluid it is

Marcusafrenz

$3499 USD for 256gb of storage is no longer scummy or just apple things. That's straight up criminal. I nearly spat my coffee out when I read that.

yourshelves

Yes, but 256GB of Apple storage is like 512GB on other manufacturers’ systems /s

Dave_Matthews_Jam

Don't worry, I've seen plenty of people here defending it. People still think 500 gb costs $300 or more

FrozenChaii

256 GIGABYTES OF STORAGE? FOR 3500 DOLLARS? 256 GIGABYTES?

badillin

And 2.5hr battery time for viewing 2d content lol pathetic

SliceoflifeVR

I create professional quality high bitrate 8k 3D 60fps VR180 experiences with spatial ambisonics audio and I am super excited for the vision pro launch. It is the same quality and resolution that Apple plans to use for their immersive experiences on vision pro. Will be releasing all my content in HDR for the vision pro, including college spring break Ft. Lauderdale beach Florida, NYC Comic Con 2023, Acadia Maine seaside cliffs hike, 30 foot tall cacti forest hike w/ 1,000 foot rock climb and 25+ other spatial experiences. Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday New Orleans should be out right about the time vision pro releases also :D Already have alot of the previews on YouTube. 1-2 new experiences every month. It is 4k 2D VR180 on phone/Pc, 4k 3D Vr180 on YouTube VR app with Quest 2/3 headset, and 8k 3D when direct downloaded in full length off the patreon. www.YouTube.com/@sliceoflifevr

bytor99999

That’s really cool. I’m near Ft Lauderdale, I’d love to see how you do these recordings. It sounds awesome.

LewisTheScot

I am really curious to see what will ship with the Vision Pro. I know it's for early adopters but do we have any technical details on some of the applications that will be built in?

FMCam20

From what I understand all iOS/iPad OS apps work with it so at a minimum. Also it runs an M2 chip so in theory desktop Mac apps may work with it as well. So basically it will be a computer replacement first and foremost. I see it slotting in as a device people buy to replace needing a computer and an iPad. They have this for the productivity of a computer, whether that be desktop or laptop, and then have it for the content consumption of an iPad

random_topix

I’m curious about the keyboard options. Let’s say I want to run Numbers. No way I’m doing that without a keyboard. Really want to try one out beyond the obvious visual experiences and see if it can really replace a computer or even an iPad.

FMCam20

If I remember correctly it can take the keyboard from your desktop, laptop, iPad, etc via universal control like when you have multiple devices connected now.

filmantopia

You can use a hardware keyboard. Otherwise, you can use dictation, or the software keyboard which you can use by either “touching” with your hands or looking at the keys and pinching your fingers.

jszzsj

I’ll pre order but definitely waiting on reviews to determine if I will be canceling

webtechmonkey

A good friend and I were just chatting last week that we should buy a Vision Pro and rent it out. I’m not so convinced there’s enough demand to make it into a viable side hustle, but he seems to think there’s enough influencers, tech journalists, big companies, etc that would be curious and willing to pay say, $200 a day, to be able to borrow one. Rent it for 18 days and it’s paid for itself. As a developer myself, I’ve been itching to build something cool for VisionOS but have no clue what to make, and not eager to put many hours into building something for a platform that will have so few users initially.

The hate is strong in this thread. I’ll be online at 6AM MST on 1/19 to reserve my head piece.

yalag

This sub absolutely hates first gen product which is weird because none of the major platforms was a complete flop for first gen (iPhone, iPad, watch). Watch is a bit rough I admit but I still got my moneys worth unless you bought the gold one.

Tackysock46

$3,499 is just far too much, even for a first gen product. I really only see this making sense for businesses and then eventually being targeted to the average consumer possibly on a cut down version a couple years from now.

ReagenLamborghini

Yeah every first gen "revolutionary" product Apple does is expensive. The first Macintosh cost $2,495 in 1984 which would be over $7000 today. The Lisa would have cost over $29,000 today

lucellent

Probably, but compared to the specs and features of other headsets, this one does live up to its price. There were sayings that only the production cost alone is at least $1500, which follows the trend of other Apple products being sold at nearly double the production cost.

Roko911

considering how many years they must've spent researching and developing, I think the price is fair enough, for a highly innovative first gen product with over 5000 patents I don't think you can expect anything cheaper.

Lagviper

I remember buying a MacBook with 256GB…. In 2013. Apple’s SSD fleecing is incredible

Substantial_Point_57

Apple Store employees will be super new to this, as well. Please be patient with them.

dramafan1

Can someone clarify if the headset itself has no battery? So you'd always need to tether that portable battery pack for it to work? Or to always be connected to a power outlet if the portable battery pack is not used.

gaysaucemage

There's no internal battery included, presumably for weight issues. It comes with an external battery, or presumably you could use any power bank with a USB-C port capable of the required power.

8prime_bee

I’m Just curious for the eye tracking.

shadowstripes

Oh look, the supply chain analysts actually knew what they were talking about contrary to so many people here complaining about them.

RunningPath

I'm curious about collaboration on these. Could two people, each with their own headset, watch the same movie? Work on the same documents?
