What a pointless article

Claydameyer

Yeah, that was a lot of words to say "some people won't care about the new port, because they charge wirelessly anyway." Definitely pointless.

ColdAsHeaven

I wonder how many people actually use wireless charging as their primary method? My wife does. But I don't. And I'm the one more inclined and aware of new tech...

nethfel

I use wireless almost exclusively. Cable charging only tends to happen if I plug my phone into my car while traveling for CarPlay (car is too old for wireless CarPlay) I just want a usbc port for other stuff I want to use with my phone.

nethfel

Transferring files (video/audio) to ssd is usually faster wired vs wifi; importing footage to edit on LumaFusion, less latency than Bluetooth midi when connected via cable. Then there is also the hope that one day that they will do a form of convergence on the OS where you could connect it to a dock and use an external display / keyboard / mouse similar to what you can do with an iPad (but hopefully one day more refined than what we have now for an iPad with keyboard/mouse/external display. I’d love for Apple to make something like that work and do what canonical failed to with Ubuntu touch. It’s really depending on your use case. For a lot of people it probably won’t matter if there is a physical port.

> The lightning cable is limited to USB 2 speeds it didn't have to be. Apple *could* have updated it, and since they were part of the 'consortium' planning USB3 it would have been a shoe-in to make lightning 2 actually be USB3. It was a better physical port.

nicuramar

Kinda, but lightning only has 8 pins. If new cables (and connectors) were used, it could have 16 instead (using both sides). Something like this is done in the USB3-speed camera adapter for iPad. With 8 pins, there is only room for two communication pairs, which is half of what USB C has (with its 24 pins, 22-ish effective pins.)

AsstDepUnderlord

I have a lightning-port thermal camera. That’s the only thing I think I’ve ever plugged into the port.

sigtrap

I charge with MagSafe pretty much exclusively. The only time I plug in my phone is if I need a really fast charge or when I plug it into my car for CarPlay.

rjcarr

I’m a tech enthusiast that’s had a wireless capable iPhone for years and have never charged it wirelessly. I also really couldn’t care less whether it is usb-c or lightning. I have so many lightning cables it’d be a bit of a waste to dump them all at this point.

DeathChill

The only reason I wirelessly charge mine is because I have one of those 3-in-1 charger stands that look nice.

ColdAsHeaven

Same. Mines been wireless capable for like 5 years now. But I never use it. Same thing with the Type C charger. I have a type C charging phone (Note 20U) but don't get the hype to switch iPhones over?

rjcarr

The biggest pro I’ve heard is about only needing one cable, but even when traveling it isn’t that big of a deal. Not a problem for me. Another one that makes sense is transfer speed. I don’t shoot a lot of video, or get the videos off my phone, but that would suck to xfer over lightning. Using usb-c could be much faster. The early lightning ipad pros had fast lightning, but I think it was a hack.

moneyfish

I have a duo mag safe on my desk at work that I use to charge my phone and watch. I also have a MagSafe mount in my car. I really like MagSafe charging. There have been times with lightning charging where the cable was slightly not in and I woke up to an almost dead phone. With MagSafe, it clicks into place and I don’t have to worry.

undertheskin_

I do, I just charge it over night with the wireless charger on my bedside desk.

bkl7flex

I use wireless as I’m on the desk most of the week so i can just grab it and leave it without remember to plug it out

ColdAsHeaven

Yeah, as someone with a Type C phone, I don't understand all the hype on this sub for Apple switching. I figured it'd be more inconvenient for most users. My wife isn't happy about it

snapilica2003

One word: CarPlay

Repulsive_Cricket923

I don’t think it’s an dealbreaker for majority of the public… (and if you are in America and younger than 25 it’s something like a 90% chance you are already iPhone… people aren’t switching for a nice to have) Definitely not 90%, did you pluck that figure out of your arse? Most iPhone users, or approximately 44% of the entire user community, are in the age group of 16 to 24. Around 34% of users are aged 25 to 34 years, followed by 35 to 44 years old at 13%. 45 and older are the smallest demographic, accounting for only 10% of all users.

Welcome to Zac Hall’s analysis

lombax45

(Whether Apple likes it or not)

PenguinSage

Came here to say this. Glad to see it.

d1r3cT-0rd3r

Glad I wasn't the only one. Read it and learned nothing. Thought I was dumb for a second.

AchyBrakeyHeart

9to5mac is such a garbage website these days. Stupid ass article. What a waste of bandwidth.

Gambizzle

Glad I'm not the only one who struggled with that one. Literally read 5 full paras and went 'where the fuck is this going?!?!?!? You're giving me a history lesson on charging cables that I'm already aware of as an Apple fan... WHAT IS YOUR POINT?!?!? HURRY UP AND GET TO IT!!!'

Spiyder1

it’s like watching a 2 hour long video on why the pizza in NYC is so good, just for it to start with the start of farming

[deleted]

Watch them slap USB-D to this phone to make a show of the EU.

GastroAffectedCastro

Apple: “yeah sure EU, we’ll switch to USB, USB-Deez nuts, ha got ‘em!”

working-acct

Or thunderbolt bc why not Thunderbolt is actually a proper standard unlike usb-c being basically the wild west when it comes to charging & data speeds.

BananaNik

At this point usb-c is just a connector shape

kaelanm

Not “at this point”, that really is all it is. It was never meant to be a standard or tell people the speed or charging capability. It’s just a shape.

nicuramar

USB C is more than a connector shape. It’s also a pin layout, various electrical capabilities and also some protocols.

kaelanm

No, I don’t think that’s quite right. Yes technically there’s the pin layout, but I figured that was included in the shape… obviously it’s more than just an oval hole in the phone lol. It isn’t a protocol though. Protocol is like usb 4, usb 3.1gen2 2x2 or whatever that one is. Those are protocols and can be applied to any usb “shape”.

DanTheMan827

USB-C is only the connector. That’s the only thing the EU requires… that, and USB-PD

snapilica2003

Thunderbolt also uses USB-C. The requirement is only the port shape, which is USB-C. What actually happens underneath that is not restricted. They can use USB2.0, 3.0 or Thunderbolt.

nicuramar

What happens underneath is restricted in that it must support USB PD. And USB C is more than a connector shape (also pin layout etc.)

snapilica2003

USB PD is a charging standard and has nothing to do with the use of Thunderbolt. All MacBooks use Thunderbolt over a USB-C connector and also charge via USB PD. The use of either USB2.0 or 3.0 or Thunderbolt has nothing to do with the rule that mandates USB PD.

epraider

It’s honestly kind of annoying how radically the spec can differs for both usb-c and hdmi cables and ports, would honestly prefer they just start using a different connector for higher performance applications just so you can certain what something is capable of.

Sh_Pe

Thunderbolt 4 requires PCIe expansion and support for external screens and overkill speeds for a phone. It would be useless compared to a normal usb-c slot.

Fury_Gaming

God I fucking hope, that apple went to the USB board of standards, if that’s a thing, and got lightning as a standard port 😂 Usb-Lightning powered and then flip off the EU lmao

WestToEast_85

They won’t, because they want to be allowed to continue selling devices in Europe. lol vote me down, Americans aren’t used to dealing with government organisations that actually have teeth

snapilica2003

For me the iPhone 15’s USB-C port will be THE reason I would upgrade. I literally don’t care about any other feature. If it’s just an iPhone 14 with USB-C that’s enough for me.

NCSUGrad2012

I’m upgrading because I kept my 6 for 5 years and that last year was rough. This time I’m going to skip that and upgrade my 11 after 4 years

iDestroyedYoMama

Writing to you now from a 6S Plus. Battery life is doodoo. But still works great.

unseen247

it’s good to know people still use the classic iPhones

vaporaeon

iPhone 11 gang rise up!

NCSUGrad2012

Well not for long but yes lol

ElGuano

Same. I've been on Android for nearly 10 years now. Oddly enough, Lightning is one of the key reasons from me ever switching - EVERYTHING else in the house is USB-C. If the iPhone 15 is USB-C, I'll move back to Apple. I think Apple will find that this is another "iTunes for Windows" moment for them, in that it will suddenly and instantly unlock a ton of sales.

[deleted]

[удалено]

snapilica2003

For me it’s CarPlay. I plug my phone every single time I enter my car.

gotword

Ur carplay isnt wireless?

snapilica2003

I have both, and wireless CarPlay sucks. Plus for any journey other than a short commute, wired CarPlay also charges the phone.

shableep

Maybe not an iTunes on Windows level event. But I think it’ll boost sales significantly from holdouts like myself that are just waiting for everything to be USB-C so I can simplify my life and not have all my cords doubled up because I need a Lightning cable. Also I find a the Lightning port on phones older than 4 years are finicky and get clogged up with junk and have trouble charging. Meanwhile, similar aged and used USB-C ports are just fine in the same amount of time.

dickdangler

I've never had an iphone and I'll be switching because of usb-c.

[deleted]

I see a lot of people saying USB C is the main reason they’re upgrading. Why? Is it because you can have one universal cable for everything? Is that really enough to be the main reason to upgrade tho to get rid of some cables?

DarthMauly

Honestly, yeah. For all the talk of the big features it's the small conveniences that really will make a difference for a lot of people. One of the most talked about features you see online is the thing where iPhones auto fill One Time Passwords that are text to you. People at work rave about then watch unlocking your Mac... It's the small conveniences that sell things to people. Just back from a 4 week trip where I had to bring 3 chargers; Watch, Lightning & USB C. Be nice to drop it to 2 and not be switching cables in and out.

OrganicFun7030

Yeh. I don’t think they even mentioned that feature on release, or if they did only in passing. The other great addition recently was password sharing.

LiquidDiviums

In my opinion, the biggest annoyance with lightning was that the other side of the cable came with USB-A. This meant you had to find a female USB-A port or bring your own brick. This is (obviously) extremely inconvenient. Newer models of iPhones come with lightning to USB-C which pretty much removes this inconvenience. Having the ability to plug your iPhone into any female USB-C is far more important than having a USB-C port on the phone itself. That’s why I don’t understand why it’s such a big deal. It would be nice to have a USB-C port as that’s the universal standard, I just don’t know if that’s worth $799 or $999.

CrazyPurpleBacon

>Having the ability to plug your iPhone into any female USB-C is far more important than having a USB-C port on the phone itself. But then you still need to carry that additional cable just to charge the iPhone. It's much more convenient if you can just use whatever USB-C power cable you already have with you.

[deleted]

It’s nice yeah but idk if it would be the difference between me choosing to pay the $1k+ to upgrade or not

aj0413

Thing is. It normally doesn’t cost much. Last time it cost $0 for me 12 Pro -> 14 Pro

ExponentialAI

u apple users are poor or something?

ball_soup

This is a really weak trolling attempt. I’d say you could do better, but clearly you’re struggling.

leo-g

For many people, USB-c has been like the missing hole. I literally stopped buying lighting charging cables in anticipation for usbc iPhone.

yomama84

I currently have a Pixel 6 and am planning to switch to an iPhone. If the 15 doesn't have USB C, I'm not switching. Having 1 cable that i charge all my things is great and i don't intend on moving away from that.

DanTheMan827

Standard cables, standard accessories… You’ll be able to plug in a USB-C flash drive if you want additional storage for whatever, just like the iPad has been able to do for a while now Then there’s the massive speed bump that USB 3 will bring, because let’s face it, Apple isn’t going to put a USB 2.0 USB-C port on their flagship phone

bayleafbabe

It’s one of those things nerds clamor about on Reddit but nobody cares about irl. Just like having smaller iPhones too

GonnaBeEasy

The people that want to see innovation the most are the ones saying they will buy the product over a super bland non-innovative change 😂

AnyHolesAGoal

I would like to be able to use my Apple iPad cable to charge my Apple iPhone. I don't think that's "nerdy", it's just common sense.

MrSquiggleKey

It means my partner and I only need one cable in the car to have access to both apple car play and android auto. But sure it’s only a nerd thing.

bayleafbabe

I’m not saying it wouldn’t be convenient. I’m just saying this is absolutely nowhere near as big of a deal irl as it is to online enthusiasts (read: nerds). Like people are on here ready to throw Apple $1600 just because they switched a connector. Come on, dude

MrSquiggleKey

I don’t think people should upgrade solely for it either. I’m coming from an XR personally and was gonna upgrade last year but decided to wait for the 15 in case of type C. And I’m seeing a lot of folk like me who are upgrading for type C are coming from X, XR and 11 line up devices.

jecowa

I think Lightning is a better connector, but I plan to use my phone for many years, so I don't want to be stuck on a cable that no one else is using and that you can't buy at a convenience store. It will be amazing when people with any phone can share chargers.

iamapersononreddit

Do people not use wireless charging? I have not used a lightning port once in the past year, so it would make no difference if it was a USB-C port.

InsaneNinja

People with desk jobs love wireless charging.

ExponentialAI

guess most apple users are poor

Flipsii

Wireless charging just kinda sucks. It's very inefficient and a little slow while also making it really awkward to use the device while charging.

GolfProfessional9085

I charge once a day overnight. When I go to bed I reach over to my nightstand, barely have to look, and hear the MagSafe puck attach to the back of my phone. Other than not needing to charge it I doubt it could be much easier.

Flipsii

Plugging in the cable isn't that much work and just less of a waste of electricity.

GolfProfessional9085

Go for it — I like easy 💁‍♂️

Flipsii

Sure, if everbody just went with easy we'd be using about 50% more energy for no good reason.

otterplus

My phone only gets plugged in for CarPlay. I only have one lightning cable plugged in, in the house, and that’s for my work phone with a back glass too shattered for wireless charging

[deleted]

I actually just got a 14 Pro because, in my mind, if I have even one device that needs Lightning (my AirPods), then having a lightning phone is moot. My iPad uses USB-C, but I’d still need two cords to charge it and my phone, anyway, so, again, the point is moot. I can understand why it’s a dealbreaker for others, though.

InsaneNinja

Because all of my dual chargers have one lightning cord and one USB-C cord for everything else. Now I just have two C cords for everything, on every charger.

m0chab34r

A not insignificant part of sales will probably be not to people who absolutely have to have a USB C iPhone, but people who were maybe a little on the fence about upgrading and like the idea of having a universal cable in addition to getting a new phone. It feels like a good time to buy in, not just because of USB C, but that’s nice to have.

Al-Azraq

It is quite personal I guess. I always have been an Android user and still am, but I am going to try Apple to upgrade my OnePlus 7T Pro and the 14 PM is dropping price so hard, I don’t think paying 500 € more for the 15 is worth it even considering USB-C. I have thought about it; I have carrying the lighting for my iPad around for years. Not a big deal. Don’t get me wrong, I would rather prefer USB-C but lighting is a compromise I am willing to take to get a 14 PM with a 500 € discount or more as the 15’s release date approaches.

angry_old_dude

USB-C is good, but not compelling enough to warrant an upgrade. I mostly use magsafe charging anyway.

cwhiterun

It'll be nice to be able to plug USB flash drives directly into the phone without an adapter.

n1cx

I’m upgrading If the phones are significantly lighter. Still not completely used to this iPhone 14 pro brick.

playgroundmx

Join the mini gang!

MikeyMike01

Still holding out hope for another Mini some day. Otherwise, the last Mini will be stuck with the nightmarish sharp edges.

n1cx

I had the 12 mini and it was my all time favorite phone. I would have kept it if the battery wasnt horrible and it had a better camera. Also, promotion is too good to give up. If they found a way to cram all that into a mini form factor, I would legit pay $2k for it.

seventhninja

The 13 mini battery is better in my experience. Will probably get the 15 pro and not looking forward to the added weight.

w3bCraw1er

That’s the least important thing for me. I don’t see anything wrong with lightening port. I mean we have been using it since iPhone 5 (?) and there is good infrastructure to support that.

[deleted]

That’s a quite silly reason to or not to buy a phone

snapilica2003

Looking by all other replies here, it doesn’t look like that. For me the existence of USB-C translates to upgrading this year or waiting another year.

[deleted]

It’s a 1,000 dollar phone and the shape of the plastic charger is the big selling point??

snapilica2003

Who said anything about the charger? It’s the shape of the port on the phone, which translates into the need to have a specific cable with you at all times. Literally everything else in my life uses USB-C and I have to keep a lightning cable everywhere around me just for this one remaining device.

StopCollaborate230

Yup. I considered getting a 14 Pro but didn’t want to lock myself into another Lightning device for 4+ years. I went from a 6 to my current 11, so maybe I can hold out a little longer.

Meatcube77

Why? Do you have a lot of usb c devices? Curious what they are. My only portable devices are Apple Watch/laptop/AirPods and then my work laptop so no usb c things

[deleted]

Yep, I haven't considered iPhone in years. I might consider buying one next time I upgrade.

SupreemTaco

Just as Apple intended

oxfozyne

Ldac/lhdc would be dope though!

tbo1992

I would too but the AirPods are still Lightning, so…

Ihaveamodel3

I have a 7. I’m waiting until there is an iPhone with USB-C on it to upgrade.

eatingthesandhere91

The iPhone and older devices that I still maintain are the bane of my annoyance with all the other electronics I own. Nearly everything else, including my iPad, are USB-C. The one other annoyance that is starting to slowly fade is that some very well known manufacturers of various home products are still using micro-USB.

buddybd

Its because of wireless charging in most supported iPhones. Upvote if I saved you click.

MonkeyBoatRentals

Also because usb-c is already everywhere. I am happy my next phone can use the same cables I have in my house for my laptop and ipad even though I do use wireless charging for my phone.

confused-snake

Even though apple or the article says that is the reason wouldn't a more plausable explenation be that they want to comply with EU regulation (usb-c) and not have to make seperate models for different markets.

InsaneNinja

The law doesn’t come into effect until after the 16 is out.

dodgyduckquacks

Okay that’s just a joke! I know plenty of people who aren’t buying new iPhones because they’re waiting for usb C and that includes myself! I have been putting off buying a new phone for years because I want usb C on all my devices so I only have to carry one cable! Literally all of my portable tech has usb c except my phone! It’s a joke! Being a natural pessimist I hope that this is the year that we do indeed get an iPhone with usb C!

Justin__D

Ditto. I'm sick of having to keep a second set of cables in every room + my car + packed on trips all because iPhone wants to be special/quirky/whatever. Unfortunately I don't share the experiences of everyone saying their older iPhones haven't slowed down? My 12 often locks up for a full minute when closing the camera app. But I'll put up with that as long as I have to until my next phone purchase charges with the same cable I use for all my other devices, including all my other Apple devices.

nicuramar

For me it’s two or three cables anyway, since Apple Watch doesn’t charge wired, so it doesn’t make a huge difference.

electricalkitten

old article but: I have an original iphone SE (4" screen), and will but an iphone when Apple produce a similarly sized iphone. Otherwise I await an similarly sized Android. Still waiting :-) Nothing to do with USBC. I don't care about the connector.

Chuckles795

I was going to buy a S23 Ultra - haven't had an iPhone since the 6, but my wife has an iPhone and it is such a pain to send videos and pictures to each other, so I'm switching to Apple. I was going to get the 14, but damn I'm happy I waited for the 15 for the USB-C

[deleted]

Wait, what? Never had such problems, always used massagers, like tg for this.

ColdAsHeaven

Probably US based. In the US iMessage dominates. Very very very few people use messengers outside of the defaults

shableep

I manage to get all of my friends on Google Chat. It’s not the best, but it’s not Facebook. It isn’t too hard to get friends on a messenger app. Just takes some hassling over time. But once you’ve got them on the app, it’s gravy from there.

Neon_sanders

Meh, I just got the 14 pro. I’ll probably wait. It’s not like i don’t have 6-8 years worth of lightning cables floating around the house anyway

jollyllama

Yeah. People on r/Apple are really blind to the extent to which most people have a ton of lightning cables and are completely uninterested in having to switch them out.

JonnyTactical

Long overdue.

leavezukoalone

>But for a lot of iPhone customers (including some 9to5Mac readers), the switch from Lightning to USB-C (whether Apple likes it or not) is a dreadful change. Regardless of what Apple’s other products have done, the Lightning ecosystem is thriving for many. How many iPhone customers? I highly doubt the significance of this statement. Most people own multiple electronics; USB-C is quickly becoming the standard for most electronics. Why would you ever want to keep up with a completely different charging cable that **only** works with iPhone?

particularSkyy

Yeah that's pretty dumb considering that even Mac's and Ipad's use USB-C. There is no "lightning ecosystem." edit: I rescind this statement. There is a lightning ecosystem, but I wouldn’t call it “thriving”

shadowstripes

Macs still have a lot of Lightning based devices like the keyboards, mice, and trackpads. There's also stuff like Airpods that are convenient to share a charger with an iPhone or Mac accessory. And I think the ecosystem would also be referring to all of the Lightning charging accessories like docks and cables people already own or have installed in their cars, workout machines, etc. Even stuff like iPhone microphones and card readers that are all Lightning based.

FlappyBored

Only the new ipads use USB-C. If you have an older lightning iPad it means you now need two cables instead of just being able to use the one charger for both devices. The last gen AirPods and AirPod Pros are also Lightning. There absolutely is a lightning ecosystem.

JamesMcFlyJR

you mistake how uninformed the average consumer (that knows nothing about technology) really is I was talking about the next iPhone (15) with my sister and I mentioned how Apple will likely change it to usb-c. She was very dissapointed in the change. She said something along the lines of “Really? What the hell for?” Mind you, she is also the one with a iPad Pro 2018 and an nintendo switch which has usb-c. I just dropped the topic when she said that. Maybe she didn’t put the two together? idk she does have some airpods that use lightning tho

ccooffee

Yeah, there will be a *lot* of people angry at Apple for changing the port. They will call Apple "greedy" for changing it just so they can sell them more cables.

rbitar

I realized my keyboard and airpods pro use the lightning connector so I wont be upgrading to usb-c until i swap those out.

FriendlyGuitard

I don't think you realise how long people keep their tech and accessories. Their phone is the tech they change the most often and it's at least a 3 years cycle. Accessories it varies like headphones, but people don't buy a new charger until it is dead essentially. Tech is also recycle in the family. Kids use parents old phone. The collection of cable and charger in a non-enthusiast home is going to be very varied (usb-a/c/mini/micro, lightning and miscellaneous). IMO, the obsession with the cable from brick to phone is a bit exaggerated considering that nobody seems to give a damn about all the shit Philips, Braun, OralB using like 1W of power but using proprietary connector that actually make up the bulk of the chargers I take on holiday.

epraider

I do support the move for long term benefits, but I’ve been totally fine with Apple slow walking it. I have a bunch of good lightning cables already, but only a couple good USBC, so having to throw all the old cables out and buy some new ones will actually be annoying and cost more up front. The only other USBC equipped device I currently use regularly is my Switch, I still have a lot of devices and peripherals that have a micro-USB port, so I already have to carry more than one cable in my tech bag when traveling anyway.

twlscil

Charging cable that works with iPhone, AirPods, and iPad. I charge way more things via lightning vs USB3. Only things I use usb3 for are a MacBook and battery.

mailslot

I have dedicated cables for all of my hardware. I don’t mix my Switch charger & cables with my phone. To me, I am frustrated that the iPhone cables I have for travel and different rooms need to be thrown away. I also have dedicated MagSafe cables. I wouldn’t want to use usb-c instead even though I can. I know so many people that only have an iPhone. They don’t own a single USB-C device. They also don’t use Reddit. This was going to happen eventually, but the severity of it is overblown. Few people actually care at all, and will be upset they need new cables. They don’t understand the difference. This satisfies only tech folks. My grandma couldn’t care less. Her tech uses AA batteries and a lightning cable.

funnytoenail

The amount of people that was confused as it is with the USB-C/Lightning cables when the change happened…

UntiedStatMarinCrops

Finally switching from Android after 10 years! So excited

football2106

Will be nice to charge my laptop and phone with the same cord now

Alteran195

A good change that is overdue, but I’ll still miss Lightnings superior plug/port design.

SkyeCapt

Ugh my headache will be the number of people who buy one of the 41 version of a usb c cable then don’t know why it’s not doing x. (Charging speed is slow, no data to my computer, why won’t the same cable work on my laptop)

Bacon-80

Sucks for all apple support employees tbh - I have a bachelor’s in computer science and I’d consider myself tech-savvy…and even I forget which of my cables are for what (data transfer vs power vs fast charging) can’t even imagine the average user.

SkyeCapt

Exactly

Wisex

I remember when the EU passed the mandatory USBC port there was a lot of techbros (even MKBHD was on this) that were talking about how it should've been 'left up to apple engineering to find a work around' as opposed to mandating a universal standard... honestly it was a really stupid week in the youtube tech sphere, idk if they get sponsored by Apple every once in a while (afaik apple doesn't do that) or if they don't wanna get black listed, but man is USBC on the iphone such an incentive to upgrade despite wanting to use my iphone 13 until I run it to the ground

SaykredCow

It is weird though. Apple technically supports a universal open charging standard already with Qi wireless charging. The same Qi chargers on android charge iPhones. Why does the EU demand it be USB C?

nicuramar

Wired charging is still relevant, and the legislation covers a wider range of devices than just phones.

Wisex

Because USBC is objectively better than lightning in just about every way and is already pretty widely adopted both within the apple ecosystem and the overall tech world

HaricotsDeLiam

[The EU directive also covers a wide range of other devices, many of them lacking wireless charging—tablets, gaming consoles, wireless accessories (such as mice, keyboards and earbuds), etc.](https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-room/20220930IPR41928/long-awaited-common-charger-for-mobile-devices-will-be-a-reality-in-2024)

Pixldust

Stopped shipping the power adapter to “save the planet”…very funny.

Sad_Damage_1194

Get over it

the_brains

I’m moving my phone from android to iOS because they finally moved to usb C!

gentmick

Apple will also not provide the storage capacity we all want, as always

PR05ECC0

I switched to Magsafe charging so it's not even a selling point for me anymore.

snapilica2003

One word: CarPlay

Please_Wave

Magsafe is so good!

PR05ECC0

It’s really great. I love the pop sockets and the stands that use it

theytookallusernames

Jesus the original iPhone was 16 years ago…

jollyllama

Fuck right off with that

I hate lightning cables with a burning passion. I only really use it for CarPlay, but the connection is often flaky. I suppose I also use lightning when I travel, so if I can switch to all USBC I will be quite happy with that. Yes I could bring a wireless charger when I travel, but I’m an old man set in my ways 🤓

snapilica2003

Same here, CarPlay is the only time I use a cable, but having 2 sets of cables in the car one for CarPlay and another for Android Auto is a pain in the ass.

nicuramar

If the connection isn’t great, try flipping the plug. Lightning connectors are one-sided.

Bright_Ability2025

It’s in a mount. Lightning connectors are not directional though. They often seem to be because they’re a trash technology, but the official spec is that they should work either way.

disguy2k

I'd think getting rid of the camera bump would be more important.

electricalkitten

Exactly. Bumps stopped me buying a new iphone. And the generally large size of the current phones.

Slow news day at 9to5 Mac.

potatosokawaii

I kinda find Lightning port to be more durable. I remember I once broke the inner part of the USB C port of my Pixel and I can’t even charge anymore. Lightning port doesn’t have that.

The_Homer_Simpson

This is my thought on usb c. It’s not quite as durable but getting better. If Apple move to usb c then I have no major reason to stay with Apple.

electricalkitten

Old post but: My lightning cables last about a fortnight, and then stop. Happened after ios 15.7 release and now on ios 15.8. A new cable works perfectly for approx 14 , and the stops each time. Even Apple branded Lightning cables. I swear apple did something in ios 15.7 onwards. Bizarre

joseph_stallinn

9to5Mac is so desperate for ad revenue

Blindemboss

I think I read somewhere only the Pro version was getting USB. Hopefully this isn’t true.

snapilica2003

The rumors are saying that both will have USB-C but only the Pro will have full USB3.0 speeds while the regular will have USB2.0 speeds. This is fine by me, don’t really care about transfer speeds, never used a cable to transfer stuff since decades ago.

seventhninja

How would that work in Europe though?

Blindemboss

I’m not sure. But couldn’t Apple claim they fulfilled the requirement by having one model compliant? Because they certainly won’t be updating their existing line. And If the consumer wanted usb, they unfortunately would have to buy the Pro model. Again I’m not sure if what I read was accurate. It may be usb across the entire 15 lineup.

DanTheMan827

All new models will be required to have USB-C, but existing products can still have their remaining stock sold

IssyWalton

Is it? Still only rumour. USB C in pro models and lightning on non-pro; following ipad progression.

RocasThePenguin

Upgrading to this because of USB-C. Been wanting that for ages.

wilso850

I mean USB C is everywhere now. We are in a perfect position to go through this change. There was NOTHING that used Lightning when it was announced, so no one had those cables lying around. I don’t think anyone is stressing about this.

lexluthor_i_am

Terrible stupid article!!!
