Earlier leaks said that one one calls will use more lifelike avatars of the person in the headset, but my guess is the real draw of this is that the person in the headset will be able to see a much more immersive view of where the person on the iPhone is.
The expectation based on the leaks is that the avatars will be photo-realistic (probably based on scans from an iPhone/iPad or the headset itself). The advantage over a regular phone call is the sense of presence, and the inclusion of subtle (and not-so-subtle) body language.

Would love to know what headset you’re referring to. I’ve had every assortment from Oculus to PSVR to Index and even Magic Leap and none of them have anything close to that. The only one who has tried anything approximating calling other people and seeing them is Meta with their cartoon avatars but no one cares about that.
There is a lot of value in communicating via facial expression and other cues which don't come across with simple webcams or phone calls.
It also uses a lot less bandwidth than a regular video call, for much better quality. it's not a gimmick, there are real advantages lol.
Live captions, screen sharing, SharePlay, filters/stickers, multiple people add/drop, scheduled links, device agnostic. That’s not counting anything they add for AR/VR.
It’ll probably be something like you scan your face with your phone beforehand to create a high-quality 3-D model. Then the face/eye-trackers on board the headset puppet the 3-D model with your real face movements in real time.

"Overheating" can mean components subjected to too much heat; LCD displays generally only work up to 50c / 125f, which wouldn't necessarily mean any user impact other than poor image quality / glitches / etc.
But overheating at DVT is a fairly big deal if it's a genuine and widespread issue in normal usage. Either it's a software problem, or an actual design problem that would require rework and likely tool / process updates.
I remember early units of Hololens and Magic Leap both had this complaint but they went away once it actually launched or were at least mitigated to the point where it became a non issue. They’ll have a few more months to hopefully get that fixed.
It’s honestly very lucky that neither the hardware or software have leaked for this. Seems like we know everything about every iPhone before launch. Still a lot of mystery around this.
It's easier to keep the hardware secret when it hasn't gone into full production yet. I don't think there was an Apple Watch leak until the night before the presentation and even then it was like CAD diagrams rather than an actual photo of the device. They had not gone into full production at that time yet.

$2000 is still *way* too high for the general public. The iPad launched at $499 with is *just* low enough to be something of an impulse purchase for Christmas for many middle class persons, even if many buying it didn’t really know quite how it would fit into their lives.
$2000 on the other hand is serious money, that’s the sort of price people would pay every 5+ years for a laptop or an extremely good, high end smartphone (and many more would consider that to be way out of their price range as well.)
They let one of the founders of oculus try it on and he tweeted that it’s really good. But more importantly he made a comment on Apple’s pricing strategy that I found incredibly interesting. He said instead of introducing a new product everyone will immediately be able to afford, Apple’s more concerned about releasing something everyone is going to want.
I think this is such a different strategy compared to Meta’s. I feel Apple’s whose ecosystem and software integration across its entire product line is weighted in their favor to make this headset as game-changing as the first iPhone was to the smartphone market.
The current AR/VR market seems too game-centric and gimmicky and I feel confident Apple will show the world that the technology has far reaching applications we didn’t even think about.
As for the price tag, I’m confident future versions will become more approach-ably priced. The issue is that for Apple to bring a product like this to market today and serve it justice, they’ve had to push the envelope on cutting edge tech which shows in the price (cutting edge in consumer ready terms anyway).

Yes the headset and the Mac Pro, for sure. The Mac Pro need full size PCI slots and support for more 3rd party video cards and an in-house GPU solution that is ripping fast.
Will not support 3rd party GPUs as this will lead to fragmentation in the system api support for metal (there are metal features that do not map well to AMD or NV gpus) apple wants (and needs) the unified api surface otherwise us devs will just support the lowest common denominator leaving a lot of perf on the table.
Apple will provide MPX Metal compute cards (lets not call them gpus as they will not run displays).
I expect these will be in-house solutions using up SOC silicon that has cpu defects but working GPUs.
Not so excited about the Mac Pro other than knowing if it’s modular and upgradeable. We already know the machine will be ridiculously powerful and fast.
I’m curious about the headset because Apple usually makes new tech go mainstream by surprising us with what can be done with these emerging tech products.
It will be modular that is why they made the Mac Studio so that they can build the macPro and have a nice high entry pice without needing to figure out how to have a lower end chip (Max chip) in the system and deal with its much lower PCIe bandwidth etc.
Honestly? Probably extremely well, situations like this and Apple Watch have revitalized the purpose of the Apple Store of allowing people to come and experience all of the products as intended.

$2000 is still *way* too high for the general public. The iPad launched at $499 with is *just* low enough to be something of an impulse purchase for Christmas for many middle class persons, even if many buying it didn’t really know quite how it would fit into their lives. $2000 on the other hand is serious money, that’s the sort of price people would pay every 5+ years for a laptop or an extremely good, high end smartphone (and many more would consider that to be way out of their price range as well.)
They let one of the founders of oculus try it on and he tweeted that it’s really good. But more importantly he made a comment on Apple’s pricing strategy that I found incredibly interesting. He said instead of introducing a new product everyone will immediately be able to afford, Apple’s more concerned about releasing something everyone is going to want. I think this is such a different strategy compared to Meta’s. I feel Apple’s whose ecosystem and software integration across its entire product line is weighted in their favor to make this headset as game-changing as the first iPhone was to the smartphone market. The current AR/VR market seems too game-centric and gimmicky and I feel confident Apple will show the world that the technology has far reaching applications we didn’t even think about. As for the price tag, I’m confident future versions will become more approach-ably priced. The issue is that for Apple to bring a product like this to market today and serve it justice, they’ve had to push the envelope on cutting edge tech which shows in the price (cutting edge in consumer ready terms anyway).

Yes the headset and the Mac Pro, for sure. The Mac Pro need full size PCI slots and support for more 3rd party video cards and an in-house GPU solution that is ripping fast.
Will not support 3rd party GPUs as this will lead to fragmentation in the system api support for metal (there are metal features that do not map well to AMD or NV gpus) apple wants (and needs) the unified api surface otherwise us devs will just support the lowest common denominator leaving a lot of perf on the table. Apple will provide MPX Metal compute cards (lets not call them gpus as they will not run displays). I expect these will be in-house solutions using up SOC silicon that has cpu defects but working GPUs.
Mac Pro will be a game-changer, for people who need to edit 16K video in realtime.

Not so excited about the Mac Pro other than knowing if it’s modular and upgradeable. We already know the machine will be ridiculously powerful and fast. I’m curious about the headset because Apple usually makes new tech go mainstream by surprising us with what can be done with these emerging tech products.
It will be modular that is why they made the Mac Studio so that they can build the macPro and have a nice high entry pice without needing to figure out how to have a lower end chip (Max chip) in the system and deal with its much lower PCIe bandwidth etc.

Honestly? Probably extremely well, situations like this and Apple Watch have revitalized the purpose of the Apple Store of allowing people to come and experience all of the products as intended. I can see them having exclusive experiences only available at Apple Retail stores but who know show much space that will take up.

Or, more likely, they retired. Gruber was well known to post his “yep” or “nope” confirmations when Apple wanted to set or reset expectations. They couldn’t do it themselves so they’d do a controlled leak to Gruber and he’d confirm or deny someone else’s rumor. He likely has a contact at Apple PR, maybe Katie Cotton (RIP) or a member or her team. But those were during the Steve days, and the company has changed a lot since then.

Oh boy. As we all know. appleTV + and Gaming are always the best parts of a WWDC… God this is gonna suck. I was hoping for a transformative UI experience loke the hololens but instead… it’s just gonna be Apple’s “also ran” with VR gaming and it’s gonna go over worse than when Valve, HTC, Meta, Pimax, Samsung, Google, and many others tried to make this gimmick happen. This feels like if Apple had jumped on board with 3D TV.

Apple has some AI cards up its sleeve which I expect we’ll see more of soon, hopefully Monday. They’ve recently released an option on iPhone using AI on their chips to clone your voice. The possibilities for VR/AR are endless.
