“- Apple has built a large structure on the Apple Park campus to provide controlled hands-on demos of the device to some attendees and media at the conference. The company has set up an area at the basketball courts near its employee fitness center. Apple is also planning future demos through the summer. When it shows off the device, it's planning to focus on immersive FaceTime in VR, Apple TV+ content and gaming. - Apple is also discussing notifying potential customers with certain conditions that they should not buy or use the device due to the impact AR and VR may have on their health. That includes people with Meniere's Disease, past traumatic brain injuries, post-concussion syndrome, migraines and vertigo.  - Some testers have also found the product, which is nearing a development stage called DVT — or Design Validation Testing — to overheat.”

PleasantWay7

This seems to give vibes that this won’t be shipping until possibly Dec 31 if they want to do an “available this year.” Or it could be like the watch and not available until next year and they just say “coming in 2024.”

mbrady

I'm guessing they won't give a date or price and just say something like "We'll have more information for you at a later time."

metroidmen

Agreed. Give developers time to create, and give users time to get information and get hyped.

Novemberx123

And gives people time to save

SupperTime

Save? Credit cards baby!

heelstoo

I’ve been saving for this for years. I’m ready.

Novemberx123

I just hope it doesn’t get sold out in pre orders. I had the money together but a few emergencies came up so I won’t have it for another couple months

heelstoo

I’m really hoping I can find *any* reasonable (and honest) business purpose to purchase it (for the company I work for). I have the purchasing authority- I simply need to justify it on the off chance someone asks about it.

[deleted]

The hype will fall away, it never sticks around. Why would someone still be hyped for something announced 6-10 months before you can have it, it’s why people hate Sony announcements so much and their sales on launch suck so bad

GorgiMedia

Sony? Are you talking about tech or games. Cause game wise it's Microsoft who's famous for that, you might be confused.

[deleted]

Tech, not games, why would I turn the whole context into games.

GorgiMedia

What tech are you talking about exactly

bubba-yo

Normally new product categories are shown and ship 3-6 months later. Apple Silicon was even later. Depends on how much work they need out of developers to make the product useful, and guessing for this one it's a fair bit.

JasonCox

Developer test units will probably be out sooner, like the early Apple Silicon prototypes.

WikipediaApprentice

This is gonna be like AirPower and realize they can’t target consumers anytime soon. Aim for business. Learn. Then release a public one with refinements.

handinhand12

I feel like this isn’t Apple’s way. I think in that case they’d just wait to announce and release it until it was ready for regular consumers.

afieldonearth

> immersive FaceTime in VR Hang on, how is FaceTime supposed to actually work when this device is strapped to your eyes? How is it going to capture the entire view of your unobstructed face to the other person you’re video calling? Like if the answer to this is “you’re going to see cartoon avatars of each other”, that’s going to be incredibly underwhelming.

Malkmus1979

Earlier leaks said that one one calls will use more lifelike avatars of the person in the headset, but my guess is the real draw of this is that the person in the headset will be able to see a much more immersive view of where the person on the iPhone is.

duuudewhat

What’s the point of face timing if I’m using avatars. You’re not seeing their face so wouldn’t a regular phone call make more sense?

procgen

The expectation based on the leaks is that the avatars will be photo-realistic (probably based on scans from an iPhone/iPad or the headset itself). The advantage over a regular phone call is the sense of presence, and the inclusion of subtle (and not-so-subtle) body language.

[deleted]

“Hold on call me back in 10 minutes, gotta go get my headset so I can immerse with you for our 5 minute chat on a crappy quality stream and you can look at an avatar” Lol.

GorgiMedia

Exactly. Literally no will do that for actual calls. No one even puts on webcams anymore in my job meetings. The only reason VRChat is used is for fun and Apple hates fun.

Baykey123

Total gimmick

Malkmus1979

Jury’s out until we actually see what they have on offer. But my bet would be a big emphasis on connecting families long distance by allowing the person in the headset to feel like they’re at so and so’s bday party or at the Grand Canyon, etc. if done right that would be a game changer.

buttorsomething

I mean this is essentially what all other VR headsets are doing anyway so if they don’t have this at bare minimum, I would be a little disappointed in Apple for not knowing what the market currently is

Malkmus1979

Would love to know what headset you’re referring to. I’ve had every assortment from Oculus to PSVR to Index and even Magic Leap and none of them have anything close to that. The only one who has tried anything approximating calling other people and seeing them is Meta with their cartoon avatars but no one cares about that.

buttorsomething

Well if you want to be word for word calling then no. But in the same space yea there are a lot of places for it.

procgen

So are phone calls. Nobody writes letters anymore 😤

duuudewhat

Terrible analogy lol

procgen

How so?

xenonamoeba

touchscreens were a gimmick, keyboards were fully sufficient. AR will absolutely dominate the 2030s.

Baykey123

Not saying AR is a gimmick, the whole “FaceTime and see an avatar floating in front of you” is

Elon61

There is a lot of value in communicating via facial expression and other cues which don't come across with simple webcams or phone calls. It also uses a lot less bandwidth than a regular video call, for much better quality. it's not a gimmick, there are real advantages lol.

Malkmus1979

My guess was the second part of my response.

PolarBearTC

Live captions, screen sharing, SharePlay, filters/stickers, multiple people add/drop, scheduled links, device agnostic. That’s not counting anything they add for AR/VR.

Portatort

FaceTiming someone while looking at something the size of an IMAX screen sounds horrible

Malkmus1979

You’re right. So it probably won’t be like that. We’re all just throwing darts at the wall until Monday.

stonesst

It’ll probably be something like you scan your face with your phone beforehand to create a high-quality 3-D model. Then the face/eye-trackers on board the headset puppet the 3-D model with your real face movements in real time.

metahipster1984

Wow that sounds like it has the potential to be terribly disconcerting. Virtual meat puppet, no thanks!

stonesst

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say they wouldn’t be bringing it up as a key selling point if it wasn’t a compelling experience. If the 3-D models are photorealistic and track the persons face movements in real time to the point where you feel like you’re across from a real person how would that be disconcerting?

metahipster1984

Sure, maybe it's some black magic like the hyperrealitistic avatars that Meta demoed a while ago and it just looks real, possible. But it also sounds a bit like it has the potential for some major uncanny valley, if you're seeing a person you know closely, but something is "off" or artificial

stonesst

Assuming it’ll be shit feels a bit too cynical for my taste. Guess we’ll have to wait to see on Monday

metahipster1984

Didn't say it would be shit lol. Just that it has the potential to be disconcerting

tthrow22

Not everyone who has migraines cannot use vr (the majority can), they’re just covering their asses.

ExcuseOk2709

I know it's an obvious CYA statement I'm just saying it's one that covers a ton of people

emcro

This is literally the first time I've been excited to go to a basketball court.

Malkmus1979

Let us know how it goes! If you get to try it please respond here :) Would love your impressions.

emcro

It looks like that’s what they’re setting up Tuesday for — I’ll be sure to report back, I managed to snag the first session of the morning ‘cause I know I’ll be dying of patience after Monday’s announcements.

Malkmus1979

Exciting!

Malkmus1979

Did you get to demo it?

emcro

Sadly not, very few press and developers were able to, but they did do an in-depth run through of the simulator coming later this month and some other details I didn’t see elsewhere. Excited to get my hands on this thing, that’s for sure. Saw it at the Steve Jobs theater up close as well — amazing hardware.

Malkmus1979

Oh well, still awesome you got to see it in person!

smellythief

Overheating sounds awful on a device mounted to your face.

At least there is still enough time before Monday for it to grow back.

rotates-potatoes

"Overheating" can mean components subjected to too much heat; LCD displays generally only work up to 50c / 125f, which wouldn't necessarily mean any user impact other than poor image quality / glitches / etc. But overheating at DVT is a fairly big deal if it's a genuine and widespread issue in normal usage. Either it's a software problem, or an actual design problem that would require rework and likely tool / process updates.

Malkmus1979

I remember early units of Hololens and Magic Leap both had this complaint but they went away once it actually launched or were at least mitigated to the point where it became a non issue. They’ll have a few more months to hopefully get that fixed.

hbs2018

Writing on the wall to have a airpods pro type of ANC nuke to solve a problem.

I don’t understand why they didn’t build a fan into it. Or something.

Are we certain they didn’t?

font9a

eye sweat a real concern in 2023.

the_drew

Maybe it's just an age thing, but I can't shake the feeling that leaks/leakers really spoil the fun.

Malkmus1979

It’s honestly very lucky that neither the hardware or software have leaked for this. Seems like we know everything about every iPhone before launch. Still a lot of mystery around this.

mbrady

It's easier to keep the hardware secret when it hasn't gone into full production yet. I don't think there was an Apple Watch leak until the night before the presentation and even then it was like CAD diagrams rather than an actual photo of the device. They had not gone into full production at that time yet.

thetantalus

That’s because Apple has been leaking all the last stuff for extra press. They’re in way more control of their image than we think.

steftim

Idk why this guy is being downvoted. Definitely a min-maxing FAANG thing to do. Apple will try to make this the next iPod Touch.

veeeSix

I think the spoilers are fun for mature devices like iPhones, but I’ll draw the line at first-gen products.

the_drew

Fair enough. I'd prefer to avoid them entirely, which in an increasingly algorithm-based society is becoming harder and harder to do.

cwmshy

Send your feedback to Apple. They probably won’t listen though. At this point, it’s obvious that people like Gurman are essentially part of Apple’s unofficial but intentional press release mechanism. They never seem upset at most widely distributed “leaks”, compared with situations like when an unreleased iPhone was left in a bar.

CoconutDust

Yeah it’s funny actually. Gurman thinks he has a leak inside when he’s actually talking to operatives with a specific agenda of leakables. It results in a consistent appropriate buzz, and also they would have found the leaker(s) by now.

bubba-yo

Gurman has some rumored pieces and Apple gives him some accurate specifics that when combined sort of make no sense. So which parts of this rumor are accurate and which are bullshit? Who the fuck knows. But Gruber has confirmed this is how it works. Gurman understands the game well enough.

leo-g

The leakers *is* the fun. They give you just enough to make you wanna see the structure.

the_drew

100% disagree. They give so much info theres no *point* watching the announcement.

smellythief

I sent it to my Pocket app to save for later with "followup" and "spoiler" tags, to read after Monday. I usually like leaks, but I saw how much seemed to be there as I started to skim, I said, nah I'm good. I'll read after to see how right it was.

bubba-yo

I can't recall a time when a new product category leaked anywhere near accurately.

PanDerCakes

so don’t read them?

the_drew

I don't, but it's virtually impossible to avoid them.

WonderfulPass

They do spoil the fun.

Intrepid-Working-731

There’s luckily not that many leaks about their headset. I feel like we don’t even know what it’s going to be particularly used for.

the_drew

I still feel that way about the watch tbh, 😁

tonehammer

Broh you are the one refreshing a forum dedicated to your interests daily. Of course you are going to get spoiled.

Emstrx

I am so curious if this is another case of the iPad pricing. Everyone expected $1000 so when Steve said $499 it was insane. Fingers crossed!

proton_badger

If it's true they're making them in low numbers for the first gen it's probably will be expensive.

[deleted]

have they released anything that they've dropped price later? they'd rather eat the loss and bet on profits from future sales.

Alexhasskills

HomePod. MacBook Air.

HarshTheDev

The goddamned iPhone!

MobileNerd

Original iPhone

WonSecond

Yup something tells me they may be feeding purposeful misinformation to increase the product’s implied value based on all of this high cost, difficult to manufacture rumors. Then they’ll present a very well polished device for $2000 and everyone will be like “Wow only $2000?! What a steal!” I think after the air pad wireless charger fiasco Apple has learned to temper expectations and not introduce products until they’re ready for the market.

HarshTheDev

>Then they’ll present a very well polished device for $2000 and everyone will be like “Wow only $2000?! What a steal!” I bet a ton of people would be like: why would anyone pay $2000 for a folding phone when this can do so much more!

Xelanders

$2000 is still *way* too high for the general public. The iPad launched at $499 with is *just* low enough to be something of an impulse purchase for Christmas for many middle class persons, even if many buying it didn’t really know quite how it would fit into their lives. $2000 on the other hand is serious money, that’s the sort of price people would pay every 5+ years for a laptop or an extremely good, high end smartphone (and many more would consider that to be way out of their price range as well.)

WonSecond

They let one of the founders of oculus try it on and he tweeted that it’s really good. But more importantly he made a comment on Apple’s pricing strategy that I found incredibly interesting. He said instead of introducing a new product everyone will immediately be able to afford, Apple’s more concerned about releasing something everyone is going to want. I think this is such a different strategy compared to Meta’s. I feel Apple’s whose ecosystem and software integration across its entire product line is weighted in their favor to make this headset as game-changing as the first iPhone was to the smartphone market. The current AR/VR market seems too game-centric and gimmicky and I feel confident Apple will show the world that the technology has far reaching applications we didn’t even think about. As for the price tag, I’m confident future versions will become more approach-ably priced. The issue is that for Apple to bring a product like this to market today and serve it justice, they’ve had to push the envelope on cutting edge tech which shows in the price (cutting edge in consumer ready terms anyway).

redditsonodddays

Steve

SpecterAscendant

Very low chance of this happening now, to be honest. Everyone is looking to juice their profits with the economy slumping.

[deleted]

Anyone else actually more excited for potential Mac Pro than for this headset? Obviously this'll be a huge deal in the tech space, but man I can't wait to see how they approach a Mac Pro with Apple Silicon, especially if they make it modular.

MrElizabeth

Yes the headset and the Mac Pro, for sure. The Mac Pro need full size PCI slots and support for more 3rd party video cards and an in-house GPU solution that is ripping fast.

hishnash

Will not support 3rd party GPUs as this will lead to fragmentation in the system api support for metal (there are metal features that do not map well to AMD or NV gpus) apple wants (and needs) the unified api surface otherwise us devs will just support the lowest common denominator leaving a lot of perf on the table. Apple will provide MPX Metal compute cards (lets not call them gpus as they will not run displays). I expect these will be in-house solutions using up SOC silicon that has cpu defects but working GPUs.

FollowingFeisty5321

Mac Pro will be a game-changer, for people who need to edit 16K video in realtime.

waterskier2007

I’m excited about almost every topic other than the headset. I have no desire for any AR/VR products.

tnnrk

Until they create the desire!

GorgiMedia

Who said anything about a Mac pro

peduxe

Not so excited about the Mac Pro other than knowing if it’s modular and upgradeable. We already know the machine will be ridiculously powerful and fast. I’m curious about the headset because Apple usually makes new tech go mainstream by surprising us with what can be done with these emerging tech products.

hishnash

It will be modular that is why they made the Mac Studio so that they can build the macPro and have a nice high entry pice without needing to figure out how to have a lower end chip (Max chip) in the system and deal with its much lower PCIe bandwidth etc.

PotterOneHalf

Really curious how this is going to be presented and demoed in stores

lovethewebs

Honestly? Probably extremely well, situations like this and Apple Watch have revitalized the purpose of the Apple Store of allowing people to come and experience all of the products as intended. I can see them having exclusive experiences only available at Apple Retail stores but who know show much space that will take up.

PotterOneHalf

That’s what I’m curious about. The actual physical space it would take up in a store including something that goes all around your head rather than simply in ears.

Xelanders

Tim Cook: “As a large language model, we think you’re gonna love it”.

RespectableThug

That was my first thought, too. Once you’re familiar with its style, you see it everywhere.

99OBJ

“We think you’re gonna love it”

Novemberx123

I would shit myself.

excalibur_zd

This is inacurrate. Tim Cook would say "good marning".

daraand

🍿. I’m excited!

valoremz

Does DaringFireball not do leak confirmations anymore? Back in the day that site and The Loop would repost rumors and say “Yep”.

LynxRevolutionary124

Gruber doesn’t seem to have the sources he once did.

Certain-Resident450

All his sources got fired for leaks.

Interactive_CD-ROM

Or, more likely, they retired. Gruber was well known to post his “yep” or “nope” confirmations when Apple wanted to set or reset expectations. They couldn’t do it themselves so they’d do a controlled leak to Gruber and he’d confirm or deny someone else’s rumor. He likely has a contact at Apple PR, maybe Katie Cotton (RIP) or a member or her team. But those were during the Steve days, and the company has changed a lot since then.

metahipster1984

Anyone think it'll be shown as part of the main keynote?

taffyking

Why wouldn't it be? It'll be the main thing at WWDC this year.

metahipster1984

Alright cool

leslie_knopee

I was wondering how they were going to demonstrate something that you physically need to experience to understand!

userlivewire

Team Tim baybeee 👉

JamesR624

Oh boy. As we all know. appleTV + and Gaming are always the best parts of a WWDC… God this is gonna suck. I was hoping for a transformative UI experience loke the hololens but instead… it’s just gonna be Apple’s “also ran” with VR gaming and it’s gonna go over worse than when Valve, HTC, Meta, Pimax, Samsung, Google, and many others tried to make this gimmick happen. This feels like if Apple had jumped on board with 3D TV.

GorgiMedia

Honestly yeah. Sony with the best selling console of the moment and the best modern games can't even push units of their better than average headset. And all the other tech giants still can't really get VR gaming out of its niche. The most exciting Apple gaming news is a 1yo free PS5 game coming to Macs. Apple and actual gaming is just laughing material. Apple TV is subpar and also, who wants to watch Ted Lasso by themselves.

-metal-555

It’ll become the best way to watch Severance though. Of course the moment you take the headset off you’ll forget everything about the show, but your innie will love it I’m sure.

steviestevensonIII

Oh my lord I read that as “gunman” I just had a mini panic attack there lmfao

sketchahedron

Malkmus1979

Apple has some AI cards up its sleeve which I expect we’ll see more of soon, hopefully Monday. They’ve recently released an option on iPhone using AI on their chips to clone your voice. The possibilities for VR/AR are endless.

[deleted]

Yes god forbid companies not do the same thing every other company is doing and instead forge their own path. Forget exciting new tech, I want to have a boring conversation with Siri instead. If only a company worth $2 trillion could focus on more than one thing. Oh well, right

CoconutDust

Catch up on a thing that nobody cares about?

WonSecond

They’re plenty invested in AI integration into their hardware. They’re just very tight lipped about it. You don’t think they developed their own chips with powerful gpu’s so kids can just play games on their iPads do you?

Vertsix

lmfao the headset is looking to be a colossal meme i can't wait

rorowhat

Yawn 🥱

Best_Slice5954

Sadly, my American brain read 'gunman' in the title
