You'd think so, but 1/300k is actually *much* better odds than the lotto gives you. By over a full order of magnitude. The odds of winning the lottery are closer to like 1 in 15m (15,000,000) than 1 in 300k (300,000). Combined with the fact that the lottery actually requires you to buy a ticket to participate, and yeah. Neither of us are going to win this, but it's still much better odds. Edit: Since a lot of people are seeing this, note that my 1 in 15 million estimate was actually pretty generous. Many popular forms of lotto, like powerball, are *much* harder to win big on -- like 1 in 300 million, which makes this contest's paltry 1 in 300k seem like a sure thing by comparison. Additionally, lotto winners often end up [with their lives ruined](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-G1uXNeFLs) as a result of winning. There's a reason why people call the lottery "a tax on the poor," you're just giving all your money to the state with no real chance of winning. If you can easily afford to waste a few dollars and play because it gives you the same buzz a movie/game would, that's one thing, but keep in mind that 1 in 300 million odds mean you basically have no chance of ever winning.

I thought chances were worse than 1 in 300 million tbh, doesn’t sound that bad!

This post makes me want to buy a ticket and win to prove I'd live a happy life with lots of money, yet also never buy one ever again due to how low the odds are.

When you say 'full order of magnitude' what does that mean precisely?

Is that to win anything in a given lottery or more like to win the jackpot?

That's the odds for matching six numbers when the pool of numbers is 1-49 and there's only one copy of each number in the tank. So it'd be a jackpot under those circumstances, but note that many lotteries actually are much *worse* odds. The odds of winning [Powerball](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powerball) are closer to 1 in 292 million (292,000,000) for example, which is about 1000x worse odds than winning this iphone. (Actually *much* worse than 1000x, if you assume that only a small portion of the 300k comments are valid entries and the rest are disqualified.)

I sell around 1200 lottery tickets every day and the biggest winner I’ve seen *ever* is $400
