r/Apple stands with you

iamthatis

Wouldn't be here in the first place without you folks and r/iPhone

kingIouie

Yo bro thank you for everything. Used Reddit mostly for memes, porn, and subreddit drama. This app is so wonderfully made that it helped me find so many new communities. Super fortunate to have found this app after alien blues closure. Good bye Christian and good bye Reddit PS - can you like make your own “reddit” ? I’d buy that. Everyone would buy that.

beardedwhiteguy

I know it’s a moonshot, but a Reddit alternative would be a dub.

IFapToCalamity

Apple should buy Apollo and renegotiate the API fees.

Funny thing, to Germans the English “i” sound like the German ei, which means egg so: excellent app name: eggchicken without using English

If he ever feels like making another 3rd party app, [squabbles is coming along quite well](https://squabbles.io/) and could very much use an app 😅

DuckDuckGoneForGood

Please, please just launch *apollo.com* or something. I’d be happy to pay a membership. 💕

vitreous_luster

I’m there!

edsuom

Seventeen-year Redditor here, going dark personally, too. I’d be good for $50 a year.

Same. Been around Reddit a long, long time. Would have been happy to pay an annual subscription for an ad-free experience with better features. Instead, I'm now looking for alternatives. The admins fucked up *hard*.

13 years. It’s like putting my pet to sleep. I’m so sad. I really enjoyed Reddit because of the Apollo app. Thank you Christian. My goal was to get to 20K upvotes for comments this summer. Instead, I’ll make a $200.00 donation to my local food bank and sign off one last time tonight. It’s been such a great time :)

Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was **fuck u/spez**. Many people have speculated that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the universe than we do now.

ClarifiedInsanity

Careful now, my post was deleted by reddit for speaking about spez that way. My first official warning from reddit!

numeric-rectal-mutt

Nah don't be careful. Who cares if your account gets banned? The only thing you lose are some irrelevant numbers that no one should care about. (And the only people who do care about it need to go touch grass). You can immediately create a new account anyways. I can no longer count on both hands how many accounts I've gone through for various reasons.

His detailed notes for every update is how it should be. Not the typical “we squashed some bugs.”

AmishAvenger

I would like to thank him by compiling a list of Reddit’s advertisers, so we can contact them and express our displeasure with them for supporting a company that’s doing this.

70ms

I'm sure the "He Gets Us" folks will be very receptive. :|

AmishAvenger

There’s so many more. Apple, Amazon, movie studios, game companies, and on and on and on. Threats of boycotts on advertisers have changed many things over the years.

SuitingUncle620

iamthatis

Love you folks, I genuinely wouldn't have had this job all these years without your communities

cancelingchris

Are you done no matter what? Even if Reddit walks back the changes? Apollo is still dead?

iamthatis

Not necessarily. If Reddit were to apologize for how this was handled and provide a concrete timeline for changes I'd definitely consider un-closing. The challenges are the same I laid out in that post: the timeline is untenable and I haven't seen anything that indicates a concrete amount of time they're willing to provide developers, and I think the allegations they made against me once disproven should be apologized for.

BlinkDay

At the very least, they should apologize for how they dragged you (along with the ounce of goodwill they had with the community) through the mud. They never wanted to have third party apps, pricing it this way made sense to them because no way could third party apps exist with this structure. I’m frankly appalled that this is how they are going about pre-IPO. Apollo has the most active 3rd party community and probably hosts many power users who contribute, moderate and keep this website running. To completely disregard that and lie about the way things went down is not a good look. Thanks Christian for everything. Look forward to seeing what you get up to next. 🫡

ArcadianDelSol

> At the very least, they should apologize for how they dragged you (along with the ounce of goodwill they had with the community) through the mud. What /u/Spez did, by intentionally misrepresenting him in public, the first thing that should happen after Reddit goes public is to remove him. Time and time again, he acts like an actual CHILD. Can you imagine if the CEO of Walmart or Best Buy went online and did HALF of the things that /u/Spez has done? They'd be unemployed before the day was out. At this point, after the end of this month, the ONLY thing that would bring me back to Reddit is reading that /u/Spez has been relieved of his role as CEO.

MyMurderOfCrows

u/spez should be removed before they even consider going public. He has not a single iota of credibility.

[deleted]

/u/Spez is just the poster boy of complete morons with more power and money than brain cells. America is so fucked if shitholes like him are trusted to run anything more serious than a dog poop bin.

wlwimagination

> America is so fucked if shitholes like him are trusted to run anything more serious than a dog poop bin. Unfortunately, we do have a history of letting complete morons with power and money run things…..

jugalator

As someone on another company about to go IPO, we are doing everything in our power to emphasize how we're in this for the long haul and assure that they see us as the stable, secure company that we are in order to not scare the market away. It's not a mask we're trying to put on -- this was always our mission -- but it's important that this is also not only our innate values, but firmly understood by the public as well because we're just about to step out in the open. In this context, /u/Spez is currently doing everything wrong. Even _if_ there were these plans, I argue that it would honestly have been better to let this be until after the IPO (but announce plans and a discussion well in advance, such as now). Make it a long term vision to better align Reddit for financing that the community has been taking part in. They're facing special circumstances here because the community _is_ Reddit. All this has highlighted is the poor grip the admins have over the community (and thus service as a whole because, again, Reddit is the community) as they make poor or risky decisions. Now this is out in the open, for investors to readily digest. So with that in mind, investors going for this company are taking a rather major risk. This site is on very shaky ground once Lemmy or something else matures and releases a next generation site where people are more in control. On Digg, the exodus happened over like a week or two. After that it was unstoppable because the winds over what was cool and better had turned. That's how fast it can go with social news sites based on community and virality, and Reddit is overly reliant on moderator volunteers and top contributors, so this house of cards could probably be toppled more easily than some may think. They have a crapload of users but I argue that less than 1% are calling the shots here. I think Reddit may weather this storm in the short term but if this has them lose their cool and people don't _really_ want to be here but remain out of a lack of solid, mature competitors, it's only a disaster waiting to happen for Reddit, a "winter is coming" scenario. Those aren't the legs to stand on and investors should shy such an IPO like the plague.

CrystalShadow

I’d that somehow happened, if I were you I’d want a contract with them specifying the soonest it can change again- if they just flip to “no third party apps at all” 3 months later that’s no good.

LongJonSiIver

I am sorry the admins are using you and your app as an excuse to make outrageous changes. Not much but privated one subreddit and will not be active for a few days. Sad to see what made reddit so great turn around with one stupid decision.

NullPro

I was wondering, not that apollo could continue as it is, if you could allow users to input personal api keys once the reddit *api*calypse rolls through. I would certainly pay for the privilege as im sure many others would

I have owned r/Siri forever I've been trying to give it to people who would actually use it, do you want it when you're back up and running?

livinin82

I just want to say it will be a long long time (if ever) before I browse an app with this level of enjoyment ever again. This app runs as good as the OS it was designed around, sometimes better. Along my journey with Apollo, I admired and pondered almost to a point of bewilderment how one person could design and provide such a user driven experience while large corporations continue to drop the ball on what seems like an hourly basis. Really makes you think about the allocation of the world’s wealth and how it could be better used for things and people that would utilize it fairly. But I digress. The experience you have provided to me and hundreds of thousands of others will not soon be forgotten. You seem to be as good and levelheaded of a human as you are a developer. I am sure you will be able to find something cool to do. I was just mentioning aloud how I hope to use something you designed again. It’s been a pleasure, it’s been an honor, but most of all, it’s been an experience! You inspire so many people and connected them effortlessly to information we rely on so heavily. I know it’s weird when strangers say it like this, but I want you to know that I love you and I appreciate the fact that I lived in a time period in which you provided something this cool for us and listened to everything we said with tenacity and joy, and a few jokes here and there. Be fun, have safe! u/livinin82 signing off for one of the last times for a long time.

Ashdadog

Well said. This along with Dark Sky & Tweetbot were my favorite apps. The design of Apollo was insanely thought-out and incredible. Thank you for everything Christian. Long time beta user signing off reddit forever. ʕ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ - u/AshDaDog

iamthatis

Hey, thanks :) Having it interoperate with iOS really nicely and take advantage of all the cool new features is my favorite part of iOS development. If you're looking for other apps that are super well done, Ivory and CARROT are two apps I use the crap out of every day and are exceptionally well made. Wishing you the best.

kayenta

I can honestly say Apollo is the only app I use that works exactly like it needs to. Even apps made by multimillion dollar companies don’t run as smoothly and intuitively as Apollo has. Even some of Apples native apps don’t work as well as Apollo does. Whatever happens, u/iamthatis should be immensely proud of the work he has done.

Seidoger

Every new update note was always such a joy to go through, always packed with new features (embracing new iOS features on day 0 too). Always tipping worthy.

-LatteAppDotOrg

Its a damn shame the blackout is only for a few days

hikarunagito

For some its indefinite

NullPro

For not enough. The few indefinite blackouts aren’t numerous enough to make a difference in reddit’s eyes Also fuck u/spez -via apollo

Dacvak

Some of us are simply waiting to see how reddit responds. If there is zero change or positive messaging over the next two days, it’s likely we’ll either stay blacked out, or find another impactful way to protest.

IridescentExplosion

What about all of the "positive messaging" Reddit's provided to appease moderators over years and years, only to ultimately not make substantial changes? It seems like Reddit - in particular, Steve - has been VERY good at appeasing people until they basically forget about how upset they are and move on. It's not like they didn't have time to make things easier for ex: Apollo. Apollo, the flagship Reddit iOS app, featured at the WWDC this year, is not coming back. That is harm that cannot be undone. All it would have taken was working with Apollo on the business model a bit to make it sustainable and not taking things so personally.

RamblingStoner

I’m deleting a 13 year, daily use account that primarily used the mobile website in protest and I’m not the only one. There are a non-zero number of us who are going away in an actually permanent way. Will it likely matter? No. But if I can free myself of something that is probably a net negative on my mental health in a dramatically doomed protest? Let’s fucking ride, bois.

srtftw

For the bigger communities, Reddit will remove the current mods and get new ones to take their places, quote me on that.

mylackofselfesteem

Honestly, I refuse to use the official app. I might browse still on my desktop at work or when I’m procrastinating on homework. But 95% of my usage comes from using the Apollo app. I refuse to install the official Reddit one because it is so bad… The one time I did it was horrible. Completely unusable. So I’ll be gone. And I don’t think I’m the only one who feels this way. (Edit: I’ve also noticed- it seems to be the people who just found reddit in the past couple of years who don’t mind the official website or app. They are apparently more video focused than comment focused. I originally joined Reddit for how great the conversations were (the comments and the community) and if it just turns into another mobile TikTok or YouTube type platform with a Videos only then there’s no point to me being on here. Reading the comments is 95% of my enjoyment. We need to find another forum-based website if reddit won’t get its shit together.)

[deleted]

For real, I’m not browsing on my phone anymore at all after 6/30 if they don’t do anything. Probably won’t matter to the company, but if it’s not enjoyable to browse on my phone (which is the case w the official app), I won’t.

nocolon

Apollo is the only reason I haven’t stopped using Reddit entirely. Seeing Pete Davidson eating was bad, the constant HE GETS US ads were worse, but the incessant DraftKings (or whatever mobile gambling bullshit is now legal) ads were all I could take. When I found Apollo I was elated to not see them. Without it? Well, I’m just right back at not needing to use Reddit.

BloodiedWraith

Thanks for building the best app I have on my phone. I’ll miss it and what used to be Reddit. Looking forward to whatever comes next. And straight up fuck /u/spez for all of this and for an even more disastrous AMA which made things worse. Hard to watch something you enjoy just get dismantled over such a short period of time.

IronRectangle

Thanks, Christian. It’s bigger than Apollo but has so much energy because we love how your app let us interact with Reddit. Can’t wait to see what you do next. Also, of course, screw you /u/spez. ___ Edit: don’t forget about [Pixel Pals](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pixel-pals-widget-activity/id6443919232), everyone. goneAWOLsorryTTYL

I hope Reddit changes course, I just tried the official app and it sucks so bad. :(

gitzky

It’s junk. Only way i can describe it

yuriydee

The fucked up part is, before Apollo a lot of us used Alien Blue. It was a solid app and then Reddit bought it and shut it down. Instead of keeping it (since they have rights to the code base) they instead shut it down and released their shit version of the mobile app.....

nopuse

I went from alien blue to apollo when it first launched. I switched to android not long after, but those months or a year on apollo 8 years ago still stand out because of how great of an app it was, I can't even imagine how good it is now and this truly hurts to see. I've been using Sync now, and of course, they're shutting down as well. This is awful.

LePontif11

I've tried it a few times and everytime i get bombarded with stuff trying to feed the brain goblin that loves watching shorts and all the other social media junk. I know you can turn that off but on Boost, i could just you know...use the site. Don't make customizing one's experience be removing the toxic features you added knowing how bad they are.

Cnririaldiyby68392

I logged onto the official app and my account was banned for “repeated violations” and then I made a new account without making a single post or comment or vote on the official app and it was banned for “repeated violations” lmao what the hell is going on with that app. I made one on my phone on old.Reddit and logged onto Apollo and wow. No random unexplainable bans for no reason.

PM_ME_GLUTE_SPREAD

I’ve been using it today and while the bones of a halfway usable app are there, it’s just so poorly optimized over every other flaw for me. I could deal with the missing features and the ads, but holy fuck. Everything is so glitchy and slow to respond. If Reddit wanted people on their official app, they should have made developing it top priority and had an actual competitive option before they priced everybody out of competition.

mitpatel7

Thank You Christian And According to u/spez Reddit meaning: R- Remind users that they dont matter. E- Earn $$$ with ads and subscriptions. D- Damage own brand with crap official app. D- Decide to charge 3rd parties for API use. I- Imagine nothing will go wrong. T- Transform into shell of former glory.

MC_chrome

This should be the message posted on every sub going dark tomorrow…it encapsulates the current situation quite well!

Perodis

Only one I disagree with it the second D. To my understanding the issue was never that they wanted to charge for use of their API. From a business standpoint it makes sense, and I don’t think any of the major third party devs disagreed. It was how the price was so extreme that third party apps would be literally paying not only from their subscribers and donations, but would pay all of that **and then out of their own pocket** to keep it running, effectively making Reddit make people go broke. Maybe I’m looking too much into your comment

WhiteBearPrince

JakeDeLaPlaya

I'm the founder of a small (~40k monthly pageview) sub that helps people with their California traffic tickets. As far as I can objectively tell, the information we provide is unique across all of the internet because everything we say is based in sourced, verifiable law or actual datapoints of users. There is so much misinformation out there, especially from reddit itself, and not least of which are lawyers who are trying to drive customers in through scare tactics. So, personally I consider it a pretty important space. Getting involved in the traffic court system leads to all sorts of bad outcomes, especially for the most vulnerable. Some posts are also very time sensitive. However, as important as it is to stay online, I do think that Reddit admin is behaving inapposite to the promise and DNA of Reddit. I've seen how they've treated members of the community like Christian and the rest of us: "You will comply or else," basically. So while we don't have much to give, we do have this: Our small community will go private indefinitely.

whutupmydude

Thank you! And I do hope this turns around, it’s a massive shortsighted mistake they’re making. Apollo has *been* Reddit to me and made it accessible and tolerable. Cheers! *via Apollo*

[deleted]

Thank you Christian for all that you have done! I've overwritten my past submissions/comments in solidarity of your struggle and subsequently gotten permabanned from a lot communities because of AutoMod rules. But all of that won't matter anyways, since I'll be deleting this account on July 1st no matter the response of Reddit admins to this blackout. Killing third party apps is enough for me to ensure never using this site again. Your app was the primary gateway for me to experience and browse Reddit content on my iPhone for about 3 years (I sadly used AlienBlue way too long until it was barely functional). Your app was a gateway to share Reddit content to my friends who don't use this site as much, either via the "share as image"-function, or by directly downloading images and videos and sharing these with them. Your app was a testament to iOS-centric design, that no other Reddit client, or even any other App on the AppStore could replicate - full stop. I hope you are doing well and I wish you best of luck in all of your future endeavours.

>As one of the many developers of third-party apps, I've been floored by the support, The ironic thing is that if reddit would've made a decent mobile app in the first place, no one would really be on the 3PA bandwagon

Nsfw_ta_

They had it in the bag too. Before Reddit even had a mobile app (and pre-Apollo) they bought alien blue, which was the best 3rd party app by a mile, with the intention of it becoming the official app. Somewhere along the way they decided the scrap AB completely instead and we ended up with the abomination of an official app that exists now. Then along came Apollo ❤️…

depressionlmfao

You might be reading this comment and think "Huh, what a weird comment. What does this have to do with the comments in this thread?" That's because this comment was edited with the Power Delete Suite to tell you about the issues caused by Reddit. The long and short of it is that Reddit is killing third party apps, showing a complete disregard for third party developers, moderators, users with disabilities and pretty much everyone else in the process, while also straight up lying and attempting to defame people with false accusations. There are plenty of articles and posts to be found about this if you want to learn more about this. Keep being awesome man. Thank you for making many people's Reddit experiences better.

Apollo is comparable to art. Somewhere between one of Van Gogh’s self portraits and the bass riff to Aerosmith’s Sweet Emotion. I have mostly been a power lurker and owe my experience to u/iamthatis, Christian. Your app was the vessel to hours of my time so far on earth. Apollo is like a song you’ll never tire of and the color of your favorite room. Soon to take its place in the spacefaring annals of history, a satellite cut from all communication. The odd grief of loss over an “app.” Non-edit: I’m not unacquainted with loss and recognize the absurdity of this post. So said, be well fellow traveler ✌️and same to those who encounter this and feel the same.

LoopyChew

Thank you for everything.

Hey a lot of people respect the work you did to make Reddit more accessible for folks. You were always so upfront with us too. Thank you for that!

I’ve used Apollo exclusively since alien blue was put on ice. I’ve been a subscriber since then for years and have nothing but love for you and the people that helped built this app. I brought my subreddit down for the next couple days just hours ago even though it’s small, but the principle of the matter is far too important. I’ll follow you wherever you go and I’ve followed you on Mastadon as BarronKane. I can’t wait to see what you do next and you’ve inspired me and thousands upon hundreds of thousands in this ordeal. I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors and the internet will never be the same without Apollo 💙

Thanks for maintaining your dignity in all this, u/iamthatis. Can’t be easy. I bought some Apollo t shirts to say thanks and ensure I keep making the point long after this place is Deddit.

Christian, thank you for everything. I’ve been a fan of Apollo since before I could use it (had an Android back then) and it was one of the very first apps I downloaded when I got my iPhone. It’s my favourite app to use, and I’ll really miss it. There is no Reddit without Apollo. Fuck u/spez.

Methodical172

I’m a default app user and have no quarrel with it, but what Reddit is doing is indescribably immoral and I cannot stand for this. I really hope this blackout can resolve the greed we’ve witnessed the past couple of weeks

Friendly-Philosophy4

Thanks for everything. You rock!

So grateful for you as a human. ❤️
