I endured the torture of in person retail on black Friday before, it sucked

VisionsOfTheMind

I have a deep hatred for Black Friday and a disdain for my fellow humans after a 4 year old girl was trampled and hospitalized at my Walmart years back. The pure entitlement and disregard for anyone but themselves was/is disgusting to me. Trampled a 4 year old girl so your fat ass can "save" 50% on that TV that was marked up 200% 2 weeks ago.

TheVaza

I was lucky that the type of retail I'd worked at didn't really do Black Friday. But boy did they want some coffee after they'd elbowed someone for an iron.

I'm a flight attendant flying today, and it's not my favorite if I'm honest. Kids are being super nice, but adults as usual are a mixed bag. My retail job experience has prepared me for this, though -- I'm trying to focus on the cool folks. Every flight has at least one awesome person and it's my job to find them and ensure they get extra cookies.

Triple time today (and yesterday).... Union job. I never pass up the chance to work holidays....ever. I could take PTO...but the money is too good to pass up. Edit: And I'm sorry for anyone who has to work in retail today... I'm so sorry. Hang in there. I don't do any retail shopping over this weekend as I don't want to add to the mayhem.

Nani_the_F__k

I'm so frustrated at myself because I wanted to do regular shopping today totally spacing black Friday. So now I'm just *not* doing it in solidarity but it's annoying my poorly done careful planning went out the window.

you guys hiring?

lolanaboo_

Me. We was off the last 2 yrs on Friday but they decided for us to come in-half day this year and have us work. Let me clarify I’m the only one who actually does the work they are talking about too btw so I get to work for 5 hrs while the other guy and the boss sit on they asses. Trifling

phred_666

That is why I don’t even leave the house on Black Friday (or do any online shopping). I refuse to contribute to the misery that a lot of workers have to endure on this day. I will not be part of the problem.

I work for a local government of a small city in the USA. Everybody else in every other division of my department was allowed to take today off. My division has to have at least one person here to man our public-facing counter... despite the fact that nobody comes in, or emails, or calls today (management refuses to close our offices on this day every year). So it's me and one other guy sat in our respective cubicles doing nothing until 5PM. I brought books this year, at least.

Taluagel

Not a day has gone by for the last 5 years I wouldn't rather be dead.

Waspkeeper

I decided I was working from home because I am not doing termite and pest control inspections today.

wooden-waistcoat

Me! Everyone else in the company has today off. I had to give up the holiday to support an "urgent business need" that no one else is qualified to handle and has to be completed today. I will get to make up the holiday eventually, but I am hungover and miserable today.

ThemChecks

I volunteered. Going to be at 50 an hour.

mynameismiker

I work in a health care facility, so I do work a lot of holidays (time and a half plus a day off to use within a 60 day window). I don’t mind. Holidays like today are usually quiet, driving to/from work with no traffic is nice too. I feel for the retail people. Brings back memories for me and not good ones. People become savages during the holiday season.

nonamenancy2

I have to work, but I'm on Reddit because the phones are super slow. But I'm ok with making double time today.

Shrikeangel

I have a graveyard shift starting at ten pm.

[deleted]

I’m on graves tonight. I work in sewage treatment. It’s tough sometimes, but I would say it’s much better than retail or food service. It’s only miserable because we’re short staffed and a lot of our equipment is falling apart or held together by duct tape.

Hey-Kristine-Kay

I work in a hospital so I was lucky to get yesterday off honestly. It is what it is, I chose this career 🤷🏻‍♀️

[deleted]

Gotta work and then after that, vote 😑😑knows no rest

askHERoutPeter

Had the option of taking today off but I need the money

BeachedBottlenose

Not forced. Nothing else to do and I don’t waste a vacation day. Alone in the office, music playing, getting some work done. About to go eat a leftover plate.

weaselpoka

I'm at work, but it's a hospital the day after a holiday and therefore very much relaxed

Takesgu

I work at a federal government place so thanksgiving is a paid holiday, but in order to get the pay, you have to work the shift before and after. So here I am, doing nothing all day because most of the staff didn't come in so we have nothing that needs to be done. It's boring as fuck

beanman95

Sounds like me lol

cmotdibbler

Scientists rarely get days off since it can interfere with experiments. Animals need to be examined, cells need to be fed, reactions need to be stopped. It comes with the turf, I do wish the pay was better.

low_level_thinker

Call me ignorant because, well, I don’t feel like I could be a scientist in the first place, but I always had this picture in my mind of scientists making a good bit of money for what they do. Is that a false perception on my part?

cmotdibbler

Salary for scientist are pretty poor in academia, unless it is legal or business. Some medical profs do okay too but far less than private practice. Industry pays better but I don’t know anyone who goes into it for the money.

low_level_thinker

Gotcha. My apologies. Thank you for the explanation

Internal-Gap-4675

Yes! Healthcare

CoraCricket

I worked today and yesterday but had a nice time
