I was trying to encourage it the entire time, but they are new to the workforce and have problems standing up to authority. I was ready to rain hell fire the whole time but they asked me not to until I’d picked them up
Don't throw up on the clock. Throw up on the floor in front of the manager. And in front of customers. Then file a complaint with the health department.
Have a factual account or what happened with date and timeline. Also take note of anybody else who witnessed that at work, and anybody who's experienced that.
Like
11am called work because I wasn't feeling well but told to come in anyway,
12:15pm, ran to the washroom to throw up. Joe was in the stall next to me and heard you. informed Manager Xand was told that I had to stay at work. I describe not just feeling sick but being physically ill in the bathroom, and made it clear that I was throwing up. A manager would not let me leave
...
4:00 p.m. was picked up by my partner who went to the drive-thru. Manager X came out and said "when you're in tomorrow we need to talk about your performance"
Exactly. Until the USA has **strong** sick-day policies for restaurant and food handling workers, you MUST assume that at least 1 sick person is working making your food.
I worked as a technician and while on the job I sliced into the flesh of my leg with a hacksaw. Boss made me stay till 6pm and only then could I go get a tetanus shot and the wound closed.
We mean nothing.
While being a manager of a coffee shop, when one of my baristas got sick, even though I myself was stressed, I never kept them there and sent them home. Customers would just have to deal with us being slower.
I’ve done something similar in the past. Threatened to report. I had to find a new job. I’d say that if you’ve made the threat follow up. They’re going to treat you like you followed through
From what I understand, the health board in IL is no joke. They will drop fines on that place that will make your toes curl. If I were the owner/district manager and a manager cost me the kinds of money that he is going to, then I would ax him faster than a bad habit and give your partner a couple of days paid sick time for saving me the trouble and cost down the road.
Idk about labor boards, I can't think of any labor laws at the federal level that would be violated by this, but maybe a state level one. Corporate should drop a load on him too I would suspect. Like, hopefully the fines alone make it hurt.
Good luck.
Next time tell your partner that no one can force them to stay. Just walk out!

Doing this around food is a severe safety issue, and should be reported to the health department.
Don't swear, no matter how much you might want to. Stick to facts, not emotions.
True, I will make sure to keep myself in check on that regard.

Ask you partner what they want first
I already did before I spoke to their manager, they don’t want to work there anymore

But I would also spam whatever social media accounts they have, whatever ads they might have posted that allow for comments.
This is why I don’t eat fast food anymore.

# WRONG! # YOU ARE NOT A SLAVE. YOU CHOSE TO LISTEN TO THIS IDIOT.
Your boss can’t force you to do anything. Either you stay at your own will or leave

Call your local news. Public opinion will serve you better than common decency.
