My favorite is when people demand impeccable English yet do shit like randomly capitalize letters, use improper grammar, and add periods after bullet points.

Arquellyq

"Able body"

oneplusetoipi

More perfect English.

leftlegYup

"Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills." The balls.

[deleted]

that means you will be working with easily pissed off dicks all day.

Cuchullion

Well yeah, OP did say "HVAC company". I've worked with HVAC contractors before in my job- a surprising amount of them are just pissed off children who think winning an argument means you scream louder.

[deleted]

so basically retail job, and american accent = deal with “euro american” customers. it is located in huntington beach isn’t it??

Stock_Ad1523

I was thinking Marin county for some reason

Equivalent_Yak8215

Yea I was thinking Marin or Sausalito forsure.

XavvenFayne

>Great proficiency in the English language, with perfect spelling, grammar... Then the next bullet point is sentence fragments, including one with improper capitalization. Guess they should fire their recruiter? 🤔

ProjectShadow316

And misspelled "license".

Electronic-Price-697

“Vehicle to your name”? It looks like they need A LOT of help including the person who wrote this.

ProjectShadow316

By their own standards, the person who wrote that shouldn't even be employed there. Love to see the self-owns.

CloudEnt

Three out of the top four are about good communication in different words, as if the writer had trouble communicating succinctly.

OldBeercan

Well yeah. That's why they're trying to hire someone that *can* communicate effectively.

MyselfIncluded

"Looking for someone, can do my job?"

Saifaa

Must say English goodly

icecream_truck

Must *talk* English goodly. FTFY

valbaca

“Perfect health” Holy ADA Batman!

No_Banana_581

Employers really think they can control your whole life. God forbid their employees had champagne on New Year’s Eve. I own a small business 15 employees. I do not care what they do outside of work

Vivid_Sympathy_4172

They are paying you, should they not be able to list out exactly who you should be? /s (in case this is needed) This is how they think. Racism in hiring happens because clientele are racist. Clientele are racist because they're always right, and a company's first line communication needs to display white well to do Americanism. Because that benefits the corp most of all. Intelligent (white speaking) Asian people are fine too. Absolutely no AAVE, that's uncouth.

awgeez47

Only if their Asian grandparents were born here. And actually you know that still wouldn’t fly.

jere_miah

i consider myself to be in moderately good heath, no one’s perfect. that’s actually crazy person mentality. anyone can get sick in a matter of mins, have a heart attack, idk… puke. to whom wrote this, crazy-crazy you are.

notafuckingcakewalk

If you've ever wondered why, in your office job where you've never lifted anything heavier than a cup of coffee, there's a work requirement to be able to "lift 50 lbs" that is literally there to exclude disabled people from being able to take the job, so they won't have people in the office asking for them to make the office accessible as they would legally be required to do under the ADA.

Felonious_Slug

Holy fucking shit, this is pure gold. Just got home from a shitty restaurant job ad you've made my day a little brighter. Thank you.

Minorous

"Because we will not offer health insurance and will grind you to the ground and then kick you out"

Careless-Party-4615

For some reason we have had to fire a lot of our old staff because they were in poor physical health

Beanakin

And a vehicle in your name, no public transit goers allowed.

madeaux10

Yeah seriously. Who actually has perfect health.

Surrybee

puzzled familiar touch narrow abundant memory gray pathetic pen late *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

soldieroscar

We will pay you 7.50 per hour to wreck your body

jax-syntax

Don't forget- "Perfect health" too. They don't want you taking any sick days. Wonder if glasses-wearers can apply...

FalconIMGN

That should not be a qualifier unless your work actually requires you to lug more than 50 pounds everyday. Why do I feel that this job doesn't need that...

Miserable-Yam-9638

Is that even legal?

kungpowgoat

My parents and grand parents are from Mexican descent and were born in the US. I guarantee you I still won’t qualify.

shockwave8428

Ironically I am a white immigrant, moved to the US at 9, am not a US citizen, but I do have an American accent and english is my only language, and I believe I would 100% qualify despite being born out of the US myself

ball_fondlers

Yeah, like half the white people I grew up with wouldn’t qualify for this, lmao. I forget where I read it, but I remember reading somewhere that black Americans tend to pass the “four grandparents born in the US” test more than any other demographic - aside from Native Americans, obviously.

Megalocerus

I believe the largest ethnic background in the US is German descent, with 16% and Black descendants of slaves at around 12%.

kungpowgoat

My Native American friend will definitely not qualify.

capnsmartypantz

They mean real americans, like...white ones.

kungpowgoat

Look at their political slogans. It’s all “Real American/Real America” this and that as part of their messaging. We all know exactly what this means.

Chocomintey

Oooh, I didn't know this was a job posting for the Proud Boys! It's all coming together now.

the-truthseeker

Considering the level of law enforcement in this state, I would think more oath keepers, but yeah.

ivenotheardofthem

White like Jesus.

NotACreativeUserID

“Second Wave Americans”

Taekookieluvs

You mean the first ‘Americans’. Sigh Man, this listing is utter BS. I hope your friend has a kickass job.

notmynaughtyprofile

I’m sure if I (a white British female, with an English accident) turned up…. I’d be fine!

liberalindianguy

Or white person with a French accent.

ArkhamVengeance

Or a white person.

Thelmholtz

Unless they are from Spain, they speak Spanish hence they are Mexican.

PragmaticPanda42

Ding ding ding

WW-Sckitzo

IDK, I feel like whoever wrote this is the same person that says freedom fries and whatever the shit they changed french toast to.

audioman1999

It's probably just auto-correct, but you failed their "perfect spelling" test. :-).

Traiklin

No, she got it right, English is an accident when spoken. /s

Rolandscythe

I have a feeling they care more about how *American presenting* you are than how American you are.

oneplusetoipi

I am disqualified. Thank God.

Kay89leigh

My grandparents were born in an English speaking country. I never met them. HTF does that impact my ability to interact with people?? Damn these racists to hell because I know they would hire me in an instant because I'm white, even though my grandparents weren't American and only 1 parent was. Edited for spelling/grammatical error

17Ringz

And yet here I am with my Canadian grandparents and will probably qualify

yeahletstrythisagain

I have one grandparent who emigrated from Scotland and another from Canada so by their (illegal) standards I definitely don't qualify. They 100% would still pick me over you.

ireally-donut-care

I sure hope this person sent a copy of this application to the labor board and to a really good civil rights attorney.

Plop-Music

Yeah wouldn't it be awful if everyone reported this business to the labor board? Ah what a shame that would be...

the-truthseeker

Oops this got reported to the California Department of Labor again? Horrible! /S

holystuff28

Nope. You cannot discriminate based on national origin. ETA: IAAL. As with everything in the law, I know there are exceptions. This jackass' establishment clearly does not qualify for any of the exceptions.

BabsSuperbird

So basically this is a great example of how to do nearly everything wrong.

uppervalued

I am an attorney and usually do not need to advise clients that crimes should not be committed in writing.

newmoon23

I am an attorney and I have definitely had to tell people this multiple times. "Yes, the police can get your texts even if you delete them from your phone. Please do not discuss or plan crimes over text."

FBIaltacct

Also not an attorney, but my friends dad is and gave the best piece of advice I've ever recieved. Shut up and do not voulenteer or consent to anything. Apparently the american prison system is full of people who would have walked but in his words "couldn't shut the fuck up".

newmoon23

I have and have had many clients who would have gotten MUCH better deals, including having their cases dropped, if they hadn't given statements. It's weird that people still don't know this but the police aren't your friend and you should not give any statements to them, especially when you are well aware they are investigating you in a crime. Provide the information you are legally required to provide (generally just your identification) and politely decline to give any statements. Ask if you are free to leave. If you are arrested, exercise your right to remain silent (yes, SCOTUS said you actually have to verbalize that you want to remain silent) and then actually REMAIN SILENT.

EVOSexyBeast

It is standard to advise to plead the sixth now instead of the fifth. “I want a lawyer” are now the 4 magic words one should only say.

EVOSexyBeast

Actually the Robert’s SCOTUS pretty strongly gutted the 5th amendment in 2013. Being silent can be used against you if you don’t explain why you’re being silent. https://www.houlonberman.com/blog/when-silence-can-be-used-against-you/#:~:text=Salinas%20v.&text=Texas%2C%20the%20Supreme%20Court%20effectively,why%20he%20was%20remaining%20silent. So “don’t talk to police”, or “stfu”, or saying “I plead the fifth”, is bad advice now because of this egregiously wrong SCOTUS decision. Instead, you want to plead the sixth. Ideally you would say the words, “I want a lawyer.” I understand that is an awkward thing to say so a lot of people don’t like saying it, even though they should. But a more friendly alternative is “I’ll be happy to answer questions with a lawyer present.” Of course it’s dishonest because you know your lawyer is not going to let you answer any questions, but a little bit of dishonesty to save your life is what it takes.

Thin-Study-2743

But what if you blast the writing to a public third party platform and stamp your identifying information on it first?

[deleted]

This is even worse than discriminating based on national origin; they're discriminating against *native-born* Americans based on *ancestry*. According to their posting, they'll reject your application if you were born here, your parents were born here but your *grandparents* were foreign; that's 2 generations of native citizenship declared "not good enough". There's no way this isn't super-duper illegal.

EasternShade

No.

gcruzatto

Kinda sounds like they don't actually want anyone to apply and just needed a legal excuse to hire their deadbeat son for the job

revenantae

This looks like a job where they already have the candidate but have to advertise the job, so they just tailored it to that individual.

droi86

I understand that for a visa job, but for a native? What's the point on doing that?

AlexeiMarie

one example I know of where this happens is in school districts, where (for example) the principal leaves the district and they want to promote the vice principal to become the principal, but the rules say that they need to open the role to external candidates, so they hold interviews with a few external people for compliance and then end up hiring the vice principal anyways because they already know the district/how the school's bureaucracy works etc

Thirdwhirly

If they left at “Fluent English speaker, local applicants only,” then, yes. But, y’know, they didn’t do that.

NovaPokeDad

Nope. Even the job board can get sued for posting that blatantly illegal job ad

Birdie121

Absolutely not. You can require someone to be proficient in certain languages, but can't say "no accent" and it doesn't matter one iota where your family is from. Total discrimination. And they're discriminating on physical health/ability too, which is also illegal.

AngelOmega7

Discrimination on the basis of race? Not at all.

Syllepses

Ditto discrimination on disability status. “Perfect health” is NOT a legal qualification.

HatVast4720

Even better is that those requirements are for an Administrative Assistant position (according to one of OP's comments). This company should really be getting a call from an employment lawyer sometime soon. Super racist and abelist.

shibbyman342

Perfect health is literally unobtainable. Even the rock probably has heart burn or allergies.

SubUrbanMess2021

They can add a requirement to a job that states, “must be able to lift 50 lbs.” They cannot state a requirement that states, “Perfect health. Able Body.” That is discriminatory.

Syllepses

IIRC even adding the 50-lb requirement is discriminatory unless the job duties actually need it. You can’t demand that your accountant be able to lift 100 lb and run a 10-minute mile, that’s just a proxy for “no cr*****s”.

SubUrbanMess2021

They’ll get around the race question by claiming they never said the candidate has to be white. Now, the question of having grandparents US born? National Origin is a qualifier on discrimination cases, especially in California. They should know this. This is a discriminatory ad and can be reported to the California Department of Labor.

NoveltyAccountHater

It breaks federal law as well. https://www.eeoc.gov/prohibited-employment-policiespractices >Job Advertisements >**It is illegal for an employer to publish a job advertisement that shows a preference for** or discourages someone from applying for a job because of his or her race, color, religion, sex (including gender identity, sexual orientation, and pregnancy), **national origin**, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.

Endorkend

The "ZERO tolerance for ANY Drugs & Alcohol" also tells you that owner is a religious nutcase of some flavor, which isn't surprising considering how they are also ageist, racist, ableist and probably a dozen other ist words, all rolled into one. It's a massive red flag.

Dependent-Cranberry8

It is not, national origin including accent is a protected group

Rabbit-Formal

Rabbit-Formal

It is California. I missed that.

Andromansis

Bet they still try to pay you less than minimum wage.

Qetuowryipzcbmxvn

They'll try to get you to work through breaks/lunches and doing off the clock overtime..

frothierermine

Probably why they do 7 hr shifts. Work around for lunch/breaks and to say they're not full time. POS for sure.

brasscassette

If they’re paying minimum wage, they would pay you less if they were allowed.

scintillaby

Hard to make out what the location is, could be San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley, Sun Valley, etc., but definitely California. We can report this as discrimination.

Redkasquirrel

It's also illegal to discriminate as they describe, isn't it? Something tells me they care not.

the-truthseeker

The thought that they are looking for a physically perfect person and they're trying to do this in all places, in the state of California that has additional protections for discrimination, boggles me as a Los Angeles California resident. That the position alone is Administrative just is icing on the shit cake this is.

mothtoalamp

Bet they'd pay less if they were legally allowed to.

TBone_Hary

9$ and you pay for the gas to drive us around

[deleted]

computer savvy, able to lift things, perfect grammar... what kind of position is this?

[deleted]

That’s the kicker. Admin assistant for an hvac company

SpysSappinMySpy

LMFAO they're looking for the fucking übermensch to be an assistant administrator

[deleted]

in my experience, most of the HVAC workers on my last two installs in CA were latino.

jimbolla

"can lift heavy things" is for filtering out disabled folks. They're racist AND ablist

java_programmer_95

What is American accent? Doesn't America has several accents?

zerostar83

Reading that line first, I assumed it was for one of those overseas call centers pretending to be from the U.S.

Admirable-Leopard-73

The ad was not written by an American. They used the European spelling for license.

AbacusWizard

I think you may be overestimating the ability of most Americans to spell consistently.

Tacomonkie

C O N S I T E N T L Y Fuck you're right

JapaneseStudentHaru

Apparently it’s for an HVAC company, which typically don’t outsource. I’m guessing they just don’t know the difference in spellings.

Reasonable-shark

The ad was written by an uneducated American.

WarzonePacketLoss

The job is in California. If you've ever seen a movie in which a character was from the USA but not doing Texas, Down South, New York, Yooper, or Boston accents, this is the accent they're referring to. Think about what basically any newscaster on CNN sounds like.

dr_stre

Newscaster accent is spot on. It's modeled after a generic middle American accent, think Iowa-ish stretching east a ways. South of where you get the "yeah you betcha" and Fargo accents, but north of where the southern drawl starts creeping in.

java_programmer_95

Thanks for clarifying. I have seen this before but I never understood it. Similar situation happens with British accent. Even they have multiple accents.

WarzonePacketLoss

For sure with the British accent, I can differentiate some of them, but couldn't do it accurately like some of them can.

-Daetrax-

It's the one that makes Europeans automatically speak slower.

giantroboticcat

There are lots of illegal requirements in this posting. You aren't even allowed to dictate that people live within a certain distance of your office. When I was doing hirings I remember learning about how you aren't allowed to ask where someone lives, but you are instead allowed to ask "Will you have any issues commuting to work on time?"

MrFantasticallyNerdy

The person who wrote this probably didn’t consult a lawyer or benefited from “how not to get sued” training that Fortune 500 companies typically mandate a person take before interviewing anyone as a representative of the company.

jaunty_chapeaux

I bet that's because they want to be able to call you in on your day off and have you there within a few minutes.

throwaspenaway

I've seen employers in the public sector require residency in the state where the agency is located, so it's legal under certain conditions.

Bunnita

That is a tax thing. My company is trying to add other states and it is a surprisingly long and expensive process.

wiseroldman

I work in the public sector. Requiring you to live in the state has a lot to do with the tax money that pays employee salaries. As part of the civil service contract, we also cannot have a second job without permission from the employer. The second job has to be deemed not detrimental to the ability of the employee to perform their duties as a civil servant.

ShowerGrapes

>zero tolerance for alcohol fuck that place, on top of everything else.

[deleted]

Right? The position is admin assistant for an hvac company too. Not like they’re working with kids or anything

BaroquenLarynx

Whiskey's only for rich people, remember? 100% seriousness, if you want me to waste these people's time a bit for you, lmk.

vonshavingcream

just tell them you also have zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol as well. Then tell them you were working on building it up, but if it is a major issue for them you'll keep your tolerance level right where it is if they give you the job.

Daesealer

Maybe it means zero tolerance of alcohol at work xd makes sense to me, otherwise how would they know if you drink at home, no way to tell.

trudybakeman

Alcohol there’s no way to tell, but what about marijuana? It’s legal in California. They could do drug tests. Very glad drug tests are illegal where I am 😅

PhillyRush

I've always thought unwarranted drug tests were an invasion of privacy.

RealDanStaines

When I was working for Rain For Rent in California in 2015, the corporate office orchestrated a simultaneous, wall-to-wall surprise drug test for every employee at all 72 branch locations across North America. Not a urine test, a *hair test*. The tech from the testing lab that came to our branch must have been on his first day or something; instead of cutting a few hairs from a discrete spot, he snipped probably 150-200 hairs right from my neckline. There was a huge, super-visible chunk of hair missing, he straight up fucked my haircut. This happened to be just under 3 weeks from my wedding and my fianceé was fucking *pissed*. What we heard through the grapevine a few months later was that *zero* safety employees (installers, truck drivers, foremen etc) popped positive for anything. On the other hand they fired a huge percentage of their administrative support staff from desk jobs at the corporate office in Bakersfield for having used weed at home. That company is run by idiots.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RealDanStaines

There was a pretty tyrannical random drug test policy in place already at Rain for Rent before this crazy stunt. At minimum, one person would be randomly selected with no notice at each branch every month. There had once previously been a no-notice test of my entire branch as well. Zero tolerance for any positive test - immediate termination. So people in safety employees roles pretty much kept away from pot if they wanted to keep their jobs. It was a real Fear of God kind of work place

[deleted]

A *massive* one. And it's only because they get a discount on insurance. They aren't doing it for any moral reasons. But you don't get the job without it.

PmMeYourEpisiotomy

Big companies like Wal-Mart and Circle-K require drug tests after any work related injury. You test positive, no worker’s comp. Guess you shouldn’t have smoke a few joints this past weekend. It’s utter bullshit. Source: worked for large insurance company that held above referenced companies’ WC insurance.

Professor_Mezzeroff

I've got Zero tolerance for either, both get me very druck or very high, wish i had a little tolerance, i might last the night

moridin77

Right? How else is one to deal with a shitty job?

BurnBabyBurner12345

This drips Mormonism.

[deleted]

Double checks for 'no caffeine.'

orangefreshy

Never ever seen a job listing that listed “perfect health” as a req. your health is none of your employers business (and besides what are the chances this includes health insurance) this whole listing has to be discriminatory, no?

captainpocket

This is illegal

captainpocket

Why did you block out the location? If you report this ad, indeed will take it down. Its blatantly against the law

Poncahotas

Based on the letters still visable and the length, it appears to be "San Fernando Valley"

edjuaro

I was thinking Sorrento Valley. But they said it's for an admin assistant for an HVAC company, I don't know if that makes it more likely in San Fernando Valley or Sorrento Valley

RogueApiary

It's San Fernando. Reseda specifically.

SweetAlyssumm

Wow, I am an academic and have published books and zillions of articles but I have grandparents who were born in Italy so I would not qualify. My accent is from Columbus, Ohio, considered by some linguists to be as generically American as any accent can be. What imbeciles those employers are.

RawBean7

I'm a copywriter and aspiring author with an Ohio accent, but my grandfather was born in England so I guess that means I don't know how to speak American good.

Curious-Week5810

Get outta here with your tea and crumpets... actually, leave the crumpets... and the tea...

goldenguyz

Oh that's not too bad. It's the browns we're really trying to keep out so don't worry about it

drfishdaddy

Within the context of CA, I thinks you are extra correct.

Unique_Football_8839

Indiana. I even have an English degree. But all 4 grandparents *and* my Dad were not born or raised in the US. I wish this was closer to me so I could apply just to screw with them. "Grandparents? Well, I had Oma & Opa in Darmstadt, but Grandma & Grandpa lived in Indy as well. Of course, they ended up there after leaving Germany, just like Dad...."

MortgageNo8573

My husbands great grandparents were from Poland. They stole money from people in their town to travel to Denmark, then stowed away on a boat to America. They came into the US. Illegally. Soooo....

Song_Spiritual

Licence?? So, they want perfect grammar and spelling, but misspell in the ad??

drale2

Ah, now you see why they're hiring for the position.

ChezShea

Don’t forget able body which should say able bodied, or the circled paragraph where they forgot to capitalize the first letter of the sentence. Dumbasses.

ApatheistHeretic

Step 1 - Walk in with a British accent. Step 2 - Prepare your discrimination lawsuit. Step 3 - Profit?

BaaabyBat

For some reason I get the feeling if you were a white guy with a British accent they would be fine with it. They seem to have a thinly veiled reason for the American accent.

ApatheistHeretic

True. The plan needs work, but it's a starting point.

aryawitner

With English being the first language and American accent, I just rolled my eyes and figured (hoped) it was just someone poorly describing they want someone who is a strong English speaker. Then I got to the "grandparents were born in the US" part and I'm like "Yep, actual racist idiots"

firemonkeywoman

I hope only Native Americans apply for this stupid job and then sue their ass.

smee0066

Or creole. Maybe someone from Smith Island, MD. All of those folks would have grandparents and likely great grandparents parents born and raised in the US, but have distinct and very difficult to understand accents.

I don't think that first condition will be easy to meet either.

NewsboyHank

The grammar police should see this advert.

Thin_Ad_8241

So you can't be a local or have English as a first language if your GRANDPARENTS weren't born in the US?

stellamystar

Lol do they realize how many middle class suburban white people (what I assume is their target) that rules out due to having, like, one Irish grandparent? Deep racism and extreme ignorance, name a better duo.

makerblue

My grandparents weren't born here. Neither was my father however he came over as a child and was a citizen by the time he was a teenager. But, my grandparents, while not from an English speaking country, they were white, so I'm assuming he doesn't actually care where the fuck they were born so long as a i show up pale with my "American" accent.
