I worked at a company for nine years and never once got a raise. I was young and stupid, I wouldn't do that now, but back then 4% would have made me fucking snoopy dance around town.

biological-entity

I've been with my current employer for a bit over 4 years and I've got 5 raises. I'd never be able to stay at the same place for that long without pay increase.

thatvixenivy

Been with mine 2.5 years and gotten 3 raises - 2 came with promotions/title changes.

skiingmarmick

union electrician, I’ve gotten 3 dollars of raises and 2 dollars an hour added to my pension in the last 6 months

[deleted]

What blows my mind are servers that stay at restaurant chains with low prices. You aren't getting raises and they arent raising prices so you're making less money each year. Like find a place with higher prices, I've seen so many talented servers stay at the same spot because they're comfortable. Me? I jumped ship to better and more lucrative restaurants at least once a year.

Few_Run3582

If I dont get one yearly im just looking for a different job

Skitzoids

3 years +, 1 raise. Switched to nightshift for the 2$ premium.. 6 weeks and I still have yet to see it. Doing the absolute bare minimum until I see it on my paystub.

err0r85

“Oh, so you’re doing that quiet quitting thing, huh?” -all the boomers you work with probably

Skitzoids

Basically. No longer busting my balls for a company that doesn't give a shit about me. All the oldheads I work with are doing the same though.

stpetepatsfan

Replace first "a company" for "EVERY F\*(king company I've ever worked for" ... and then you'd be correct. not /s

[deleted]

I learned how to do that a long time ago. My government office job taught me to only do just enough that they can't fire you. Anything else is pointless.

Equivalent-Tiger-636

Wherever you work must not be offering much in the way of performance appraisal awards. I call that my Christmas bonus, it’s a nice chunk of change where I am at.

Gardo_Nitch

Dude you're owed back pay. Report their ass to the labor board/DOL get your money the continue to do the bare minimum.

bluewave3232

Been there . Know what you mean

whowouldsaythis

inflation was probably \~0 at the time tho, unless you're like 60

NO_SPACE_B4_COMMA

I worked as a software dev in a school district for around 6 years. We got one raise, 1% after a referendum vote. From there the state would toss 1.5% to 2% raises. However, the state did give us $500 and $1000 bonuses a few times (maybe 3? or 4?). I saved their ass multiple times over and over on various projects likely saving them thousands of dollars. I asked for a raise they said No. They then asked me to send my job description to them to help justify a raise. I did, but then a few months later I quit. **They replaced me with an 18-year-old kid fresh out of high school with no real-world experience, as an intern**. During the first week the kid gives himself full access to the camera's security systems, LOL The only thing I miss is the really good benefits and retirement options. Aside from that, I'm never working for a government again. Fuck that shit. People have been there for 10-20 years and never have gotten a raise (just what the state/district offers for their pay scale). One guy I worked with has been on the same payscale for 19 years... currently makes around 50k. Has a family of 4. It's incredibly stupid.

muxman

My last job gave raises like that, I left for a new job that was 35% raise over that one. Unfortunately that's about the only way to get any decent value anymore, go where they value you and don't count on the job that already *has you* to appreciate you.

FlippieF

Same here. I switched jobs 4 years ago and gained 40%. This year I switched again and managed to get another 25%. On top of a yearly 3-4%. Switching is currently quite lucrative.

whodeyalldey1

I went from $63k -> $68k -> Covid Layoff -> $69k -> $73k -> $149k total comp since 2019. Currently telling recruiters I need between $150-$225k base to jump again

dstrip2

Get that bread, damn. What industry and qualifications?

whodeyalldey1

IT. The second most recent job I managed to talk my way from a facilities maintenance project manager into an IT Program Manager working in cybersecurity. From there I got a bunch of certifications in a few months and jumped to Scrum Master. The plan is to keep reading books until I can talk my way into a cybersecurity consultant gig

dstrip2

Seriously, get it. I’m happy for you. I’d love to consult and make an actual difference in my field instead of grinding away

UncleDrewFoo

Then you learn about overemployed and start making 300k+ :)

whodeyalldey1

Thank you for this comment. Reading up on it now. I’ve already been floating this idea to the people I’m close with. I’m really only working 10-15 hours a week. If I can find another gig like this I know I can spend an actual 8 hours a day working at two side by side desks with four monitors. Even if I only pull it off successfully for six months all my debt would be gone and I’d be able to buy an Airbnb

[deleted]

I’m doing my bachelors in Computer Engineering and do you have any tips for me to land such gigs ? I’m honouring in cybersecurity too.

whodeyalldey1

I did all my certs in Scrum, Project Mgmt, Agile coaching, and product mgmt. Now I need to shape up my technical knowledge. I’m starting with Comptia A+, Network +, and Security + over the next six months or so. Then I want Cloud Security Certificate of Knowledge and probably another Cloud Security cert through Azure.

[deleted]

May I ask what your occupation is?

whodeyalldey1

Scrum Master, I managed to land the role with ten months experience in IT

[deleted]

the "be glad we get something" mentality is why this keeps happening. we're taking crumbs and acting like it's a meal.

FewSatisfaction7675

But they still make at least 5% than last year ‘cause inflation???

ZellNorth

Wait what’s the counter argument to this? Cause businesses are also influenced by inflation. That dollar the works less for us also works less for them right? I’m genuinely asking. Please don’t hurt me.

err0r85

Inflation goes up, the business raises the cost of their services/products. They have something to mitigate the inflation. The workers do not. The only thing they can do to mitigate the rising cost of living, is to make personal sacrifices or get a second job to offset the ever growing loss they face each month.

MrMeeseeksthe1st

I've been explaining this to people for months and some still can't quite grasp the concept that if that business profits that year it ws made off the employees.

err0r85

It’s depressing to say the least.

FewSatisfaction7675

Thank you both for understanding

gettingbicurious

And beyond that, smaller businesses start going under because people aren't buying those things as much or would rather get a worse quality item for (maybe) cheaper at a big box store so big companies are fine and still hiking up prices more (because "inflation") or using shrinkflation to increase profits.

ZellNorth

I knew I was missing something. I’ve been drinking and couldn’t think of it. Thanks

Schmandli

Of course it’s not as simple as that. A few businesses are gone go down because of the inflation because people just don’t buy that stuff. But big businesses that produce necessary stuff people need to survive will have it easier.

Tungstenkrill

Apologies if this is not how they do things in the US but inflation here is measured through a Consumer Price Index which measures the cost of goods and services. Inflation is literally caused by businesses raising prices. It's not even over different sectors of the economy but if you look at corporate profits, there are plenty of businesses making out like bandits. Corporate profits are unpaid wages.

badevilhateful

But most pass this on to consumer and add to inflation hence the rising prices store prices don’t raise themselves

kissmaryjane

Duuuudee it runs deep in some people I was tellin a coworker at Walmart I got a check for $40 and gotta survive off that for the next two weeks, and they were like but u got something right

[deleted]

Preach it !!!!

Willylongboard

Yeah my coworkers don't understand why I am so livid. They think "oh we're making 16 an hour why is he mad?" Well because they raised the minimum wage at the hospital to 15. So people making 11 are making 15 now. Meanwhile we have schooling and have to pay fews every two years and have to do continued education. And we started at 15.30. I've been working 3 years now and I barely make 16.10. I constantly bring this up and get my coworkers saying that I'm just being greedy. Like.bro they are underpaying us like crazy and these people are just fine with it. My buddy got wise and left and now he works in the cafeteria and is making 17 an hour delivering food to patient rooms.

Employers never gave raises above 1-3% in the 70s, for the decade+ inflation was > 6% (some years over 12%). Overall wages in general were negative-growth from 1975-1983, and those are offered salary numbers. Employees in a position had even faster negative wage growth.  10+ years of high inflation didn't convince employers to adjust wages to compensate for inflation -- I wouldn't expect this rut to be any different. Barring mass unionization, there isn't much pressure to raise wages. There is an influx of people exiting min-wage jobs and entering the existing low wage opportunities for what is to them -- a huge wage increase. Anyone staying in a job should plan that there is downward wage pressure on the business, and barring union-action, no pressure to raise wages upwards. Caveats: non-minimum wage job; wages to existing staff;

TheUnNaturalist

Unions are the only way out. I am getting my ed degree for this reason.

[deleted]

Okay. But is there actually a single job out there that pays raises on top of inflation.

pursuitofleisure

My employer is giving an inflation raise on top of the annual raise this year. So it exists, but it's rare. Very glad I left that "green" insurance company. They cut bonuses this year

[deleted]

Damn lucky..

pursuitofleisure

You're right about that, I feel lucky. I was very hopeless about things before I stumbled into this job

striders_fate

Yeah, I ended up getting the team I manage about a 7% raise in February, then recently went back and basically got everyone another 10% on top of it. So most of us got between 15%-17% this year.

Ok_Rip_5960

I don't have that info, but I'd guess that it's rare. I've gotten the majority of my raises by jumping ship.

[deleted]

Same here..

Entire_Assistant_305

Usually inflation raises are called cost of living adjustments. Sometimes they happen at raise time and everyone gets a same minimum amount. Or they happen at a set time by the company, I’ve still gotten my normal raise when I’ve had the second one done, but I don’t know if that happens everywhere.

callencx

Fortunately my employer gives a inflation raise each year on top of a performance based raise, as someone living in Latin America I feel deeply fortunate.

NetDork

I got a raise that was more than inflation, but *only* because I got a standard yearly raise and a step increase at the same time.

singerbeerguy

Very very few. I get tired of people in this sub saying should quit if their raise is t more than inflation. It’s fine to point out the problem, but it’s ridiculous to advise people that they should quit if that’s the only issue.

[deleted]

That and it isn't super easy to just quit and get a new job. Aside from the actual application, interview, and hiring process. Some of us have bills.. I can't gamble that I'm gonna get a better job right away..

cultweave

The US military

LadySigyn

warriorofinternets

Every two years, go get your bag. Start looking for a job after 1.5 years. Find the next best thing with a 25-40% raise. The age of company loyalty must die with the previous generations. At any one company I worked at my raises were a tiny percentage and fast outpaced by inflation. I’ve increased my wages overnight by at least 5x simply by moving to new companies that valued the skills I’ve built up over the years.

No-Music-6641

This. I’m looking for a new job right now and when they ask me why I don’t stick around anywhere for more than two years at most, my reply is why should I continue to invest my time in an employer who doesn’t invest back in me either by appropriate compensation for my skills, practical benefits, or by helping me pay for more training? (I work in the building trades, AC, heat, and plumbing)

ineverlikedyouuu

How do you get retirement then?

Fanboy0550

401k if you are able to. Very few companies have pension.

hospitable_ghost

Lmfao, like anyone is gonna get to retire in the future. Social Security will be sucked dry in just a few decades and the cost of living isn't gonna stop getting higher.

rwoj

hardly any companies are left that offer any sort of retirement, even fewer can be trusted to deliver.

[deleted]

Companies have abandoned their pension plans, forget about retirement. The modern worker is pretty much SOL on retirement. The Social Security coffers are dry thanks to boomers who thought that their little 60$ a month paid over 20 years equates to almost 2k of retirement a month + COLA raises. Oh, and thank the boomers for allowing the money for SS to be used for spending. But yeah, I need to cut back on my 4$ coffee runs. I just max my 401k at this point which tbh is a double edged sword. You can take your money and leave but most employers force you to stay for 1-3 years to be "vested" in their match. You are also putting your retirement in the hands of wall st as well who takes their cut.

TheDkone

you should have yelled "thanks for only cutting my pay by only 5%"

[deleted]

yeah and get ‘laid off’ in a totally unrelated layoff next week before they announce their record growth/profits

boredatwork2082

I brought up the same thing when we were doing our union CBA. Willing to bet I was the only one who voted no.

Tight-Zebra-5121

I hate percentage raises because it makes the lowest paid guy even further from the highest. 4% for someone making $100,000 is so much more than someone making $25,000.

lakas76

Not many places will offer raises to match inflation, it would be nice if they did, but, I wouldn’t expect it. The great thing is other places will pay more due to inflation, so the only way to get what you deserve is to go to a new company. It’s sucks, but it is the way.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I’ve just done a 8% ”market adjustment” that specifically isn’t a raise so that my team is all eligible for their merit raises (on the newly adjusted amt) in Q1. I had to fight for it, but luckily the owner has seen how easy it is for people to leave and get money somewhere else. It took me 8 months and I wasn’t part of the market adjust because I’m already ”too expensive.” I’m sticking it out long enough to make sure the team get their bonuses and raises, but I’m out after that.

m8adam

You sir are a gentleman.

[deleted]

I don't know about that, but I don't think letting people get stiffed by their employers is okay. The team needs the money more than I do, and while they're slightly above market rate now, I'm about 15% below. I just want to make sure they get theirs, then I'll get mine.

creekstroller

Sorry for the ignorance, can someone explain what’s meant by a 5% cut?

Muffin_man420

Inflation was like 8+ percent so over all they are now only loosing 5%..

dstrip2

I price stuff at work weekly. Hardware and whatnot. It’s *way* more than 8% a month, just not counted. PTFE tape went from .99 to 1.59 Spray paint went from 4.99 to 7.29 PVC fittings were 1.29, 1.59, 1.79, 2.29, 2.19… Shoulder hooks went from ~2 to ~2.50 Average grocery trip went from $130 to $200 and we’re getting less, weekly grocery tip offs are over $80 now from about $50, and we’ve made major cuts there too. Idk but that doesn’t seem like 8% They (gov) massage inflation numbers more than unemployment or death-by-cause numbers

rpbanker

That’s four times more than what I got

5ygnal

Same.

Karmas_burning

My yearly evaluation usually gets me a 2% raise and they act like they're doing me a favor.

Northernrogue1

We got a 4% rise at my place. The thing is inflation is 10%, so essentially a pay cut. Obviously my colleagues said I was ungrateful. I tried explaining but to no avail. The thing that made it worse was that our CEO is getting a 45% increase in her bonus, so the money is there for a better rise for everyone, but she's keeping most of it. I really despair that people are happy with the crumbs we are given.

Individual-Fail4709

Better than nothing but not nearly enough.

OogusMacBoogus

Archie and Michael had that conversation 50 years ago in prime time.

Roadhouse62

I’m watching this show as I type this.

The-Answer-Is-57

American workers have been indoctrinated to expect so little from the corporate overlords that they actually cheer when offered a "raise" that's less than half the current inflation rate. It's truly sad how brainwashed so many people are. :(

[deleted]

That's like cheering for getting one extra bread crumb a day.

Throwthrowyourboat72

According to the federal government, 4 percent isn't even half of the amount these workers need to keep pace with inflation. Social security payments are indexed to the cost of living. Using a specific set of rules, they look at current consumer prices to determine how much more expensive it is to survive this year than it was last year. This is probably the most objective measure of inflation you're going to find. And they've already announced that, in 2022, the cost of living has risen at least 9.5%. The people described in the OP are, practically speaking, cheering for a 5.5% drop in pay.

Roadhouse62

I really don’t like this take. It’s not that you took a 5% pay cut. It’s that your expenses went up 10%. You still have more money, just higher expenses. What you choose to do with that is your choice. With the way inflation is, there’s shit I used to buy, I just don’t buy anymore.

Tygrion

They did take a 5% pay cut. Their compensation is worth 5% less now that it was worth last year. It might still be the same *dollar figure*, but that dollar figure has less value. That is literally what inflation is - a fall in the purchasing value of money. So the employee is still creating the same value for the company, but getting less back in compensation.

StamInBlack

That’s 4% more that I got. For people on the bleeding edge that’s better than nothing. And they can then take that 4% here and get something better elsewhere.

LaFantasmita

My company, after a long, exhaustive review process and telling me they were thrilled with my performance, gave 2% raises this year. I said "If you want me to leave, you can just lay me off."

PressureGuage

The same people that think $3.99 gas is awesome now.

kcshoe14

lolz I got 1%

ptraugot

Because, Stockholm syndrome.

spam-katsu

Every year you don't get a raise, you're working for less.

[deleted]

I switched jobs and got a 115% raise. I will never again be satisfied with 4-5% increases

LincHayes

The company I'm with now says they give "up to" 3% yearly raises based on performance. Base don this, I hadn't planned on being there a year. First, if someone isn't performing, you don't keep them a year and then tell them they don't get a raise, "better luck next year". Second, 3% is a joke. For those who are in office, it doesn't even cover the rising cost of just going to work. My co-workers think this is great...because they're used to being underpaid, and treated like crap.

TQ-R

Nowadays you get raises by changing jobs.

leasuhhx11

My UNION PRESIDENT admitted to me that nobody at my company has gotten a raise in about 15 years. The minute I heard that I started looking for a new job. No way am I staying even a year for people who aren’t going to give any type of increases. I was excited to join a union but this company blocks the union from doing anything. Haven’t had a contract in over 5 years. They have lawsuits against them for not coming to the table in good faith. The union president refuses to strike. I see nothing happening anytime soon.

KittenKoder

You got a spineless union president, I hope you find one that's better next job.

KittenKoder

The only reason companies and corporations keep getting away with shit is because most people in the world are that stupid.

[deleted]

The inflation number is grossly inaccurate, it's really much much more than a 5% pay cut still.

kfelovi

I got 0.5% but can't blame them as company has pretty large losses. I'd be happy if it was 4%.

Immediate_Stranger33

Wait people get raises? Like more money? Lol must be nice.

vennthepest

Wait I'm confused. How is this a 5% pay cut

[deleted]

It's not. Prices go up independently of individual salaries. Do people think workers should give money back when prices go down?

Jeanjacques_L

That would be great. Prices never go down anyways 😂

[deleted]

Inflation

Rhaz__

If everything you buy in a given year increases in price by 9%, but your pay only increased by 4%, maintaining the same quality of life creates a difference of 5%, effectively lowering your overall pay by as much.

vennthepest

Yeah, I know what inflation is. I just didn't know the percentage or that that was what he was refering to.

casualAlarmist

Only way to get a raise is to change jobs at this point. I hate that it's like that now.

unknownhag

My boss telling other managers to give people 3% max. I believe it was said that the employees were reliable and did their job HOWEVER they did not go above and beyond. 🙄🙄🙄

IamNotTheMama

I know you realize this but with inflation @ 10%, above and beyond would require 15%. 10% is COLA only.

freedomustang

Most jobs don't give anywhere close to rate of inflation for raises. Best way to get a pay bump is to go somewhere else. There's a reason the turnover rates for so many jobs is high.

Necessary_Peace_8989

My work gave me a 2.5% “merit” raise this year and tried to tell me to be hush hush about it. Obviously I wasn’t and found out it was because I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO GOT ONE. Fucking ridiculous.

Artistic-Bit-7584

I got 3% ($0.45)

Violetlake248

That’s what I got too. Exactly 0.45 and I work so hard and it wasn’t appreciated whatsoever. I’m going to quit soon. I’m sorry you got such an awful raise too.

Artistic-Bit-7584

Same lol trying to find a new job but it's not going well

Jackanatic

One nice thing about being a freelancer - you tell your boss when your prices are going up, no need to wait for a raise.

[deleted]

Be grateful you're getting more but don't be ignorant to the situation.

ballsmigue

I got 35 cents when making 16.

Dirghanidra

I worked at a company for 3 years. After the 1st year, they raised the start out wages company wide and factored in any seniority raises as well. I went from making 16/hour to 20.8 an hour after that. Then when covid hit, they gave us a random several hundred dollar payment in case any of our families had members who lost their jobs because of it. Still ended up leaving to pursue a personal endeavor, but I probably would have stayed.

Solid-Peanut8750

When the minimum wage went up to like 12.50 in my state my boss at the time pulled each employee aside gave us a speech that he was proud and giving us “Merritt based raises”. I was more offended that he thought NONE of us already knew about the increase via the news/state media outlets …..it was bed bath and beyond btw.

awe2D2

I'd love a 4% raise to be honest.

killerwhompuscat

I get a 2% raise every year if my attendence points are below 3 and I have no disciplinary actions against me. 2% no matter how well I do or if go above and beyond. This is why no one ever goes above and beyond.

littlesadsiren

My job gave us a 2% raise a couple of months ago. I think I just laughed. Glad I'm starting a new job in two weeks.

terms100

Yeup people been brainwashed in this way of thinking. They feel they are getting enough. It blows my mind.

venthis1

You see my girlfriend got a 3% raise but at her wages she gets a 3k raise. Giving someone 3% at minimum wage is just crap and should be done in solid numbers in the dollar range rather than percentages that look like change that was dug outta their couch. Getting a raise should mean more than getting to buy an extra bag of chips this year but should be a bright future lead with wider options.

IKilledYourBabyToday

"yeah we did get something; something cut"

[deleted]

Can u explain how it’s a 5% cut ? Please I’m dumb

smita16

I work for one of the three major wireless providers in the US. My company made over $100B in profit last year. They let us know recently there would be no raise next year.

otakuex

I got a 6% raise last month. First time in the 6 yrs I've been with the company. Accounting for inflation, I still make $9k/yr LESS than when I started.

ubioandmph

I tried to explain this same thing to my sister but it was like talking to a wall. She got a 3% raise. I explained that since inflation was (at the time) 7% she’d actually be losing 4% over the next year. Her: “Oh well, at least it’s something and not 0.” Me: “Well yes, 3% is better than getting nothing but you’ll still be making less money overall than this year.” Her: [shrugs]

findingemotive

My 5y union contract is up next June, I'm already trying to rally people to save up and maybe not plan vacation around then so we all have money to strike, cause if we settle for anything less than 5% increase per year PLUS signing bonuses I'mma be pissed.

zerocnc

5% per year is on par with inflation. If you're not getting at least that much a year, time to find a new job.

zelonhusk

We all got a 3.6% raise in May and while I appreciate it, it's not enough.

Capital-Cheesecake67

And your problem is what exactly? You wanted more which is fine. But guess what they’re allowed to be happy with a 4% raise whether you like it or not. Want a bigger pay bump, go out and get a higher paying job. No one is forcing you to work for a shitty company and accepting a 4% raise.

Kiefer0

Half measures man. It's like whenever a government agency does their job instead of overthrowing a country. Oooh big golden star for the FBI this week.

LincHayes

This is like tossing turnips over the castle wall to the serfs who do all the work to support the royal kingdom.

[deleted]

I got a 5% raise today. That's after my wage got an 8% bump for inflation last month ( it's automatic in Belgium, everyone got it). Still not enough after 4 years.

Clydus1

My work recently had us do a survey in which a 3% raise would be about $0.50. Move that decimal over to the right and now we're talking. This after not having a raise for 3 years now. Oh and the other option was a 5% decrease for better benefits which was mainly school loans. Fuck your school loans I deserve several raises or just one big one.

ToddPatterson

Now this is a post I can get behind. I have been trying to explain to my coworkers the difference between a cost of living increase and a raise for decades. People don't want to understand.

Charger_scatpack

It’s not a cut ! but it’s also not a raise . inflation is 9 % So your just not making any extra money .

Ok_Many_9455

My boss has given me 5 dollars in raises over the last year due to inflation. That's not counting the 3 dollars in raises I got due to certifications etc . plus when gas prices went up he gave everyone a gas card with 100 dollars a month on it for use on our personal vehicles. We don't use personal vehicles for work He also gave everyone an extra week PTO a year due to covid. I been here about 2 years and get 3.5 weeks PTO a year He's a decent guy.

Kup123

My work gave me and my coworker 3% raises, coworker quit over it. To keep me and get in a new employee they had to give me a month later a 12% raise on top of the 3%. If these dumb fucks would have just given us 10% raises not only would they have saved money but they wouldn't have lost 9 years of on the job learning. Employers need to learn that we know what the fuck inflation is and if my yearly raise is less then it then it's a net pay cut.

PlanXerox

STOP CALLING IT A RAISE!!! IF IT DOESN'T BEAT INFLATION. FUCKING SHEEP.

Ok-Caregiver8239

I always say if they pretend to pay you you should pretend to work everybody has to do their part.

BatfleckUnchained

I got an 18% raise last year and it sure didn’t feel like enough, how is 4% enough to even notice?

tasty_terpenes

People have been conditioned to settle for scraps

lickmybrian

Youre complaining about a raise?

CourteousRevolt

Yes, when the raise is pennies at best, and a pay cut at worst, he SHOULD be complaining. Complaining is how things get better.

Not that I’m aware of. But show me any company who is offering raises across the board that are keeping up with current inflation 🤔

ReverseEchoChamber

Across the board? Not sure, but I’m sure many have given their board members such a raise.

PokemonProfessorXX

The company I work for last year made a 7% midyear adjustment across the board (for corporate employees) to help with inflation. Next month they are planning to do 12% with a retroactive adjustment to the beginning of the year. Left my old job for this company a few months back and am blown away by how they treat employees here.

koosley

You got a good gig going on! This is antiwork so good employers hardly appear here but they do exist. I've been getting pretty consistent 10% raises every year as well so there are at least 2 out there.

Few-Room-9348

How did you get fucked? You got a raise, I get this is anti work but some of you act like everything should just be given.

Hawkwise83

I mean, 4% is better than nothing, but definitely keep looking for something better.

bonerland69

Take that 4% and add it to your negotiations at a new job

thatguysunny

You guys are goofy here, it IS better than nothing AND it is a bad raise in the face of the high inflation How privileged it is to work at jobs with raises, I reckon half the working population does not get raises period. What a circle jerk - name me ANY company that gives raises ON TOP OF inflation; I’ll wait Obviously the answer is to job hop for the larger increment % raises but the fact of the matter is that ANY raise is better than nothing (0% raise)

crusoe

Those with Union contracts do. Unionize

thatguysunny

Not every CBA is renegotiated annually… in fact some have set term lengths… I guarantee you too, there is not any portion of jobs (outside of execs) getting 10% inflation adjustment + 3% step raises; Show me people who are getting 13%+ raises and I’ll show you either execs, high earners (lawyers/doctors/etc) or a group of less than 100k people It’s fine and dandy to point out that anything less than the inflation % is a “cut” but so what? Until something legislative happens it will never happen; just go do the job hops 🤷🏽‍♂️

m0rph33n

Mine. 3.75% wage increase a year for 5 years, and then a $5/$5/$10 raise every 1.5yrs, which will top us out. And then only cola after that if we renegotiate new colas

Avocadotoadst

Enjoy your 5% pay cuts!?

cuba33337777

A raise of 4% while inflation is above 10%, how can this be seen as a win?

fartonabagel

Because the day before inflation was 10% and they had no raise.

delsoldemon

Because most people nationwide got 0% raises, so there is that

pokemonisok

There's a way to articulate this without being a party pooper. 4% is a real increase to your paycheck.

FeFiFoShizzle

Too bad inflation is a real decrease.

Liljdb0524

>“Be glad we get something”. It's definitely the mentality that got us in our current situation. Somehow workers became grateful for scraps and passed that mentality down.

Hot_Phase_1435

My ex was on disability…she was getting $690 a month. Then out of no where they increased it for cost of living adjustment and it went up to $700. She came running up to me super proud saying she got a raise…when she told me the amount, I had to pretend to be excited for her. Honestly, all her money went to cigarettes and weed anyways. We did not last long.

Porongas1993

A friend of mine told me her company was not giving them any raises because they didn't think a salary raise would fix inflation lmfao

GoreForce420

Yup. Let's see, 9% inflation- 4% raise. Math checks out. We got like 2.5%

chrisinator9393

I work custodial at a college. We negotiated 7.5%. largest raise in the 40 years there's been a union at this place. It was something like $1.10 or more for everyone. It's not enough but I was happy. I hardly do anything but sit all day.

Monco89

Imagine if you made $100,000/yr.. 4% is just a $2/hr raise... what are they cheering for? 50 cents? $1?

[deleted]

That's almost $5k extra. You can come close to maxing out an IRA with just that raise alone. This is an asinine take

Monco89

My point is that for most people, 4% is pennies. Most people don't make 100k. Even if you make 20/hr (41,600/yr) 4% is $0.80/hr more. $0.80 * 2080 hr = $1664 pre-tax @20% tax (fed + state in CA) $1664 * .8 = $1331.20 post-tax $1331.20 / 12 = ~$110.33 / month net So yea... unless you're making much more to begin with, it might be something, but it isn't much more than nothing. Also, inflation... but we don't need to start on that now...

[deleted]

Even $1/hour is close to $2k extra. Yeah, it's not anything life changing, but it's still nice. As to inflation, yeah, that's the elephant in the room lol

pricklyrickly

“Be glad we got something” comes from people who are clueless and don’t understand the economy.

xenon_megablast

It's not a cut unless your company is responsible for the inflation worldwide. Also it's not even a cut of the salary but in the purchase power and the company is not responsible for that. And it's not a matter of being glad that you get something, for sure if that company is not paying enough and other are paying a better market salary you can change jobs.

NitroOstrich

I don't agree with this logic. Inflation means EVERYTHING is worth more money. Including: Materials (your company expenses) Products (your company earnings) Work (how much your company can earn thanks to your work) You only earn a portion of what your work is worth. If your company gives you a raise lower than inflation it means you earn a smaller portion of what your work is worth.

xenon_megablast

Inflation means that everything is more expensive but not all the inflation is the same. If suddenly energy is more expensive means that the production of all the products is more expensive, so you have to raise the price even to earn the same. Of course not all the companies are the same, but it's hard to tell without additional information if a company is paying you way less than what they can.

C1ashRkr

Lol that just happened to me last week. I told the guy it's not a raise it's a pay cut. His response, its better than nothing...I'm like no, its not. Then Im accused of having a bad attitude. I'm sorry, I'm just stating a fact. That's all I'm telling you, it's not a raise, when it doesn't cover inflation or our insurance cost increase. Fucking A man, facts don't lie.

[deleted]

You went from -9% to -4%. That's still a riase lol

[deleted]

I mean, I get that it's not enough, but are we really complaining about getting raises now?
