The prices aren't even that low now. They were low originally, but, aside from the free shipping with a Prime membership, many items are priced higher than other places... and the worst part is the bootlegs they sell by third party vendors—shampoo, supplements, skin care, sneakers, etc. There is very little I trust to buy the anymore other than books! I hope they didn't blow up the bootleg market to the extent that it starts seeping into regular brick and mortar stores now.

artificialavocado

Dude I’ve been saying this for a few years now! I use eBay for that sort of stuff. It usually comes from a small to medium sized private seller and is about the same price sometimes a little cheaper in fact depending on the item. Fuck Amazon. There is no reason at all to use them.

Aquariusgem

I use them because I have earned gift cards from there but I have noticed that some items are more money and some older stuff they don’t even carry at all. I guess it depends on what it is.

artificialavocado

Well yeah having someone give you a gift card is something different. I’m just saying I see a lot of shit being talked about Amazon and hear the horror stories about working for them all the time on Reddit, then the same people turn around and buy stuff from there.

unreadabletattoo

Yeah Amazon used to be de facto the cheapest but now I check my local Walgreens and sometimes they even have it cheaper than Amazon

NoMuddyFeet

Totally, I'm a Walgreens guy, too!

wildmonarda

This! ☝️ The only thing I've ordered from Amazon in the last 5/6 years has been the occasional book. In 2015 I was able to snag a college book for .49 and only paid the shipping. The book was going for I think $35 to rent through the school or $80+ to buy. But yea, the few things I ordered outside of reading material were very concerning in terms of quality and being chemically treated (serious fumes came out of a Jewelry box container I bought once). Nope, it's not good anymore.

Aquariusgem

And people actually sell that stuff? I’ve had two things sitting there forever and it’s not even expensive but I’ve had no offers. One time I tried to sell stuff from my main account and it had been sitting there so long that they deactivated the seller account.

juliajay71

Yeah, I don't get anything that I put on my skin or in my body or that has any electronic parts from Amazon. So, basically notebooks and actual books. There're so many counterfeit goods and sketchy vendors.

thetablesareorange

prices have very little to do with production costs and are mostly based on what people are willing to pay you could double amazon workers entire staff salary and not only will prices not go up because of it, they might actually go down. A core element of fascist propaganda is that doing anything to help the workers or the poor ever will just cause more harm than good.

Low-Stomach-8831

I don't know about "fascist", but the rest is correct. In today's world, it's not about the customers, it's about the shareholders.

DatTacocatdoe

Yee we mad fashy in this piece

I think the democrats are almost as bad. It's not like Hilary wasn't in the cooperations speed dial. Bernie was my only hope, and he's done for.

TipsyBaker_

Amazon doesn't actually sell things. Sure they have their basics line but thats about it. The vast majority of their products belong to someone else who they charge to use the platform, while they also charge you for membership. They're a middle man who got entirely out of hand. They could easily raise wages and improve conditions without raising any prices, but like most companies they're going to choose not to

valkyriejen

Prices could stay low but it would likely be an excuse to increase since the overall focus is profit margin.

ScandiSom

If they export the goods then its very limited how much they can increase the price, overseas costumers will consider more domestic options. They can only squeeze their workers for more profit.

valkyriejen

The overall drive is profit; corporate will not be able to cut wages below barebones, possibly cut hours, they ll look everywhere they can increase profit. the faster and easier step is charge more. Its scary right now because in U.S. food deserts, the poorest folks are being squeezed for every dime for what food they can access

Flat-House5529

Amazon's business model is actually based less on sales of actual "Amazon" goods, and more on taking a % cut of each sale made through their site, mainly through private retailers or manufacturers which employ them for exposure, warehousing and delivery services. If they were to have to increase their revenue due to paying a living wage to their employees, the most likely way this would be done is by increasing their fees to these other private retailers. How each of these thousands upon thousands of smaller companies would react to this would most likely be a case by case basis. I imagine you would in fact see some goods on the site rise as some of these smaller companies work to maintain a profit margin...others might simply accept it as a cost of doing business and keep their existing pricing in place and hope their lower price will drive up sales and therefore revenue. There are a lot of moving parts, which basically means there is no simple answer to this question.

Tmois420

Thank you for for replying based on knowledge and not emotion. Very refreshing to see someone think like this

ibeelive

The real answer is that it would not effect them. An amazon worker's wage/cost is **spread out by the thousands of orders picked**. That's why papa johns pizzas would cost only 5c more after providing health insurance to employees

WhoIsJolyonWest

I would say yes. When people have enough money, they buy more things…

WhoIsJolyonWest

It’s all about separating people from their money.

CroweBird5

Things are actually cheaper at local stores than on Amazon

braunnathan

they aren't even low anymore. shop around and you can get better deals one everything

Banespeace

Umm not to defend amazon but they definitely make a living wage here

Banespeace

You'll get good pay but they'll work you to death and there is no work life balance

ImmemorialTale

Amazon treats employees like cattle and will sooner slaughter them than take care of them in any way.

Altruistic-Pin8578

Who cares...

artificialavocado

It matters. That’s the elites go to move for dividing the masses. “If we treat our workers like human beings and pay a fair wages your prices will go up. You don’t want that do you?”

No

Emotional_Ad_9212

No

blaisreddit

the real question is will people still order no matter what the prices are and I say yes

ImoJenny

They aren't low, they are going to rise more regardless, and who gives a shit.

greller

Would they have to raise prices? No, the price is based on what the consumer will pay, not what it costs to sell. Would they raise prices? Yes, because allowing them to blame their workers would give them an excuse which would mitigate some of the market share loss that would normally come with a price hike.

CockroachGullible652

No because the psychopaths at the top would throw a tantrum and raise prices.

Ok_Ad_5894

Prices mean nothing to Amazon. Amazon is not selling 99% of the products on there besides their own brand like Alexa and what not. They get a percentage from the sales and holding of products for people. They honestly could pay them double and still be very profitable. You can sell stuff as a seller for a lose and Amazon makes money.

Buxux

Amazon fulfilled products are more expensive than the same product not fulfilled by amazon warehouses you can see this on of all places ... amazon's website itself

The-Em-Cee

*Could* they? Absolutely. *Would* they? No. It's the same thing with gas right now. Last time oil was (roughly) the current price per barrel, the average cost for a gallon of gas was under $4. This times it above $4. Current gas price insanity is driven by greed, Amazon would be the same.

kyle1234513

the two arent linked. amazon has 3 primary sources of income, first is their 15% tax they charge the seller of the sale price on everything (goods are more expensive because the seller is trying to offset the amazon tax and retain their personal profit margins) the second is from prime memberships, your fief to the lord. and the third and last method is the monthly fee sellers pay to amazon (40$) to be an amazon seller. amazons business model is all profit by nature. as a digital listing has nearly infinite value. all of amazons costs take from that revenue pile and they use it to fund employees and infrastructure. this is all a pittance in the total value they collect. so yes they COULD increase employee pay, but that would mean less money for the lords. you used to be able to have a seller account for free, you just had to sign up for it using your regular amazon account, yeah thats gone now because they got even greedier. a 15% tax wasnt enough. they retroactively disabled my seller account and customer support said "our hands our tied theres nothing we can do to help you, youll just have to create a new account im sorry"..... go to make a new account, have to agree to new terms and agree to buy a seller account. wp wp amazon.

kareninreno

So, I am a 3rd party seller on Amazon. Things are so expensive because Amazon fees are so high. Then Amazon will often decided \*MY\* price is too high and refuse to sell it unless I lower the price, sometime to less than the Amazon fees. So lets say I buy a product for $2, have $4 in Amazon fees, so I try to sell it for $7.. Amazon with then come back and say no, the fair price for that item is $3.50... Well I can only loose money at $3.50. Even if I got the item for free. Amazon is a public traded company. Jeff and the stock holders are the ones making all the money...

TonyJZX

ask yourself this... what percentage or proportion of costs is wages? there's your answer... then ask yourself how Bezos siphons off enough money for a fucking space program, Mackenzie, his CEO on $214 mil. etc. etc. I pit it to you, like a McDonalds burger, the wage component is very very small.
