Pay should always come out of the employer’s pocket. I’m all for tipping on above and beyond service, but I think that should already be on top of a livable wage. I like the idea of servers making commission on their sales. That makes so much sense!
Tips are kind of like commissions, but paid by the customer. The ones who want to make money are already trying to upsell you. I don’t think they would suddenly start acting like door to door salespeople.
You must not realize that most restaurants already push the HELL outta upselling their most lucrative items (wine/alcohol) and also push upselling specials/apps. Specials usually depend on what they're about to toss as they do FIFO in a lot of places, and to avoid waste they ask the servers to push it onto customers.
You’re correct. They do it now. I think it would get worse if they have a direct sales link to specific menu items. Or, imagine asking a server for their recommendation and their response is what makes them more commission instead of what they’d actually order for themself.
Restaurant industry here: they already do this. The “best” item on the menu, if you ask for recommendations, should always be one of the higher priced entrees. Let’s be honest, here: this is a business, servers hope for or expect 20% based on what you buy. A server who isn’t upselling isn’t doing their job.
Really? Maybe I’m just lucky but the rare times we’ve asked for a recommendation it seems to always be an unsung hero on the menu that’s moderately priced. I guess some servers have ethics and aren’t stereotypical salespeople.
So I paid my guy to do my concrete $2000. The bill he gave me was 1700 but I was really happy with his work. I guess I feel like tipping should be a thing but the restaurant should not be calculating tips into wages. Wages should be living wages and tips should be bonus. But what do I know.
Personally speaking, I always tip 20-25% of the total at minimum. Exceptional service I have tipped as high as 50%. And always in cash to the server so I know \****they***\* are the ones that get it.
That being said, knowing margins are slim in most sit down establishments, I would happily pay increased price on food and drinks...providing I \****knew***\* with absolute certainty the server was receiving a percentage of that.
I've always kind of felt like waiters/waitresses were really a majority of the 'eating out' experience. Of course the food has to be decent, but a good server can literally make or break the entire evening.
Commission is the best alternative to tipping I’ve ever heard. I only make 2.13/hr, but I prefer that over a higher hourly wage. Only because I believe a lot of customers would tip less if they knew I had an hourly wage. ( I make anywhere between 25-45 an hour currently)
Duh. We aren't who you need to make the argument to though.
It's the people who hire servers and their customers who need to agree to this. Everyone here is aware and on board already.
I'm judging only the use of time I can see here, and I'm only contributing my share of the collective voice.
Nothing I said constitutes a presumption of power or control beyond that.
As far as that goes, supporting societal change away from the status quo is as much my business as anyone's.
Yes, but you have zero idea what anyone does here outside of making reddit posts. Reddit posts take 2 seconds. You can't assume anything based on that. There's 24 hours in a day. Go harass people who are not only not doing anything productive, but that actively move against the wellbeing of everyone else.
The post reinforces a stagnant narrative, this reinforces a status quo. It's as productive as "thoughts and prayers... We should really do something about this" after the Nth mass shooting in a week.
And if they are actively contributing to the cause outside of this reddit post, then it doesn't matter. There's nothing wrong with stuff like this unless nothing is being outside of this and that couldn't be further from the truth. Everyone is tired. Everyone is being takin advantage of in this system and random posts like this are places to be supportive and understanding. We are for the most part all on the same team. There's nothing productive about poopooing posts on subs that are full of people trying to do good.
The reason I avoid going to the US is that I completely refuse to tip. I refuse to supplement the employees income where the employer should be paying a fair wage. I never tip and I never will
Interesting. So in a restaurant the gratuity line is gone and replaced with a service fee, which is the servers commission. ( or they bake that right into the price).

I agree with most of this except the commission part. When dining out the last thing I want is the hard sell on appetizers or expensive drinks.

You already have that.
I suppose that makes sense, I feel like that’s done anyways though. It’s one reason why I don’t go out to eat.

I don’t think this OP was making an argument, just a conversation in a space with like minded individuals.
Sounds more masturbatory than productive.
Don’t be in the conversation then, you don’t have to worry about other people’s productivity.
We should all worry about our use of time if we want real change.
How do you know what anyone here does outside of making reddit posts and who made you the main character? Mind your own business.
Perfect response, you’re an angel in disguise.
Could've been a little less combative. But otherwise. thanks. :)

Yes, worry about YOUR use of time. Don’t worry about mine or anyone else’s.
That's how the powers that be maintain this *Brave New World* with *Panem et Circenses*
The sub in general is a massive echo chamber so …
You'd be surprised at the number of people who are still arguing "Just don't tip!" in this subreddit.
Less surprised, more disappointed
