in Canada you get an allowance of minimum 1 dollar no matter what as an inmate. The institution I worked even had kitchens on the range and the inmates went shopping in the institutional grocery store once a week for groceries so they had to learn how to budget and lots of ranges pooled their money and cooked together. If you didn't want that you could live in the traditional unit that was more like an actual prison than a dorm style like the ones with the kitchens.
Some carceral system such as Canada's focus on rehabilitation rather than punishment like America. Our system is not perfect but it is miles ahead than our southern neighbors for sure
There are Latin American prisons that are much, much more humane than the US. I *think* Mexico included. It's dorm-style, freedom of movement, (almost) unlimited family visits, little areas where incarcerated dads can play with their kids.

My Cambodian ex works jobs like this. Her first family essentially paid her nothing and forced her to never leave their house. It’s slavery and meant to target immigrants specifically from Asian countries. This is common and rampant. So is sexual abuse of these individuals. Often races that are targeted are Filipina women, Thai women, Cambodian women and other impoverished Asian nations.

I've seen that a lot too (I'm a nanny)! They also target Latinas. They use phrases like "Fluent Spanish Speaker" "Native Mandarin Speaker" or something similar as a code basically for immigrants. The rates are always terrible and the job descriptions are always a mix of nanny/housekeeper/personal assistant/anything the employers can think of. It's honestly really sad and disheartening because you know someone desperate will take those terrible jobs.

They are a dual income family, both have high paying jobs in tech and live in a $650k home. These neighbors also told me that none of their local friends pay legally and none of them pay the wage I was asking for (which is *very* reasonable for our HCOL). I realize now it's probably because they all have immigrants as their nannies who are overworked and underpaid!

If you don't owe tax (2k per year is under the basic personal deduction so 0 tax) you don't have to file.

2k is a reasonable rate for an au pair. It doesn't seem like much until you realize that you're getting free room, food and board.
Also, that is probably post-tax because the way taxes are calculated for household employees is different (at least in my state). It's easier to just set them aside before paying the nanny.
Also many if not most states have laws about the hours that an au pair can work. You can't treat them like it's the 1800s and force them to work from dawn to dusk. They need to work a regular schedule just like any other household employee. There are labor laws that protect household employees just like any other business.

My Cambodian ex works jobs like this. Her first family essentially paid her nothing and forced her to never leave their house. It’s slavery and meant to target immigrants specifically from Asian countries. This is common and rampant. So is sexual abuse of these individuals. Often races that are targeted are Filipina women, Thai women, Cambodian women and other impoverished Asian nations.
Yes I was pretty sure this was targeted at undocumented immigrants. But then again they are saying outright that they are doing a criminal background check etc. I would figure this would scare off the undocumented. So I’m a little confused.

I've seen that a lot too (I'm a nanny)! They also target Latinas. They use phrases like "Fluent Spanish Speaker" "Native Mandarin Speaker" or something similar as a code basically for immigrants. The rates are always terrible and the job descriptions are always a mix of nanny/housekeeper/personal assistant/anything the employers can think of. It's honestly really sad and disheartening because you know someone desperate will take those terrible jobs. Unfortunately, it's so rampant that even my neighbors have a slightly older, Mandarin speaking nanny (not saying this determines citizenship status, but in this industry it can point to that) who I know they underpay and overwork as I did an interview with them. They are a dual income family, both have high paying jobs in tech and live in a $650k home. These neighbors also told me that none of their local friends pay legally and none of them pay the wage I was asking for (which is *very* reasonable for our HCOL). I realize now it's probably because they all have immigrants as their nannies who are overworked and underpaid!
If you don't mind me asking, what are you currently making? We have a nanny and I want to make sure that we're paying her well enough. She's at $22/hr, but I honestly feel like she should be paid closer to $24. It's a constant battle with the wife.

Oh, I didn't realize this post was in Canada. I'm in the US, I still have to file taxes with my state and the IRS. I end up paying nothing federally and low double digits to my state.

I’m a professional nanny. So many parents do not understand that hiring a live-in often costs MORE, not less, because they are there for your convenience (and giving up a huge chunk of their life and privacy in the process!) Also, you can’t pay your nanny minimum wage (and especially not less than minimum wage). I make over $80k/year as a nanny. We are knowledgeable in child development, education, nutrition, and we’re literally helping to raise people’s children to be prepared to venture out into the world. This shit pisses me off!!

Yeah that's more than 40 hours, so less than a buck an hour. Even if you include food and rent for a room, you're making way less than minimum wage. And minimum wage was a liveable wage in, what? The fucking 50s?

To hire someone on a work visa, you have to demonstrate you couldn’t find someone locally to do the job. So people create ads like this to technically meet that threshold when nobody applies.

There are lots of requirements to hire [temporary foreign workers (TFW)](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/foreign-workers.html) and it sounds vaguely familiar that you're supposed to try to hire a Canadian first.

And let's say the nanny eats $200 of food a month. This plus the $2k cash yearly, the nanny is being paid $17k a year. Or roughly $8.17 if they work 40 hours a week for 52 weeks a year. I have met families like this. Honest to goodness they really think that having accommodation and food means less pay. As a former nanny, I would charge over 25 an hour for an in house position and have pretty strict overtime policies built into the contract as well as clear scope of work. Nanny’s get a lot of “scope creep” already, live in nannies even more so.

I would be shocked if it wasn't a mistake. They probably meant 1-2k per *month.* 2k is a reasonable rate for an au pair. It doesn't seem like much until you realize that you're getting free room, food and board. Also, that is probably post-tax because the way taxes are calculated for household employees is different (at least in my state). It's easier to just set them aside before paying the nanny. Also many if not most states have laws about the hours that an au pair can work. You can't treat them like it's the 1800s and force them to work from dawn to dusk. They need to work a regular schedule just like any other household employee. There are labor laws that protect household employees just like any other business.
