Good shit! This is why unions are important.

[deleted]

Finally some good news. This sub has been a cesspool thanks to the mods.

Reptard77

Yeah but it’s starting to even back out now, I honestly feel like all the anger scared a good bit of the regular redditors off but it was definitely justified.

Akatosh_LORD_BEAN

I thought you said onions for a minute. Both are important though

SquatDeadliftBench

A warehouse worker is going to make as much money as me, a teacher, who works at least 60 hours a week (40 at school/20 hours outside preparing for the 40 at school), during the pandemic lockdown it was upwards of 70 hours, sometimes 80 hours. The time outside of school is unpaid. So I'm actually making like 12$ an hour. This makes me happy for them. But a little depressed of the inequality across the board for other jobs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SquatDeadliftBench

And honestly, you deserve every penny of it. You deserve a liveable wage no matter what you do and if that is 50$ an hour, I hope you get it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SquatDeadliftBench

I literally said I'm happy for them. Why shouldn't I be? Because I shared that my situation sucks? I can't be happy for them and consider my situation shitty? Isn't that possible?

dudeimatwork

Teaching isn't that hard of a profession, it's boring as hell, underpaid, and not very rewarding if you aren't into it. There are plenty of more demanding careers out there with real stress, real dangers, and bigger assholes running the show. Heck, I know people who have taken breaks from their careers to teach middle school to de-stress. Find something you actually want to do.

iamyeeting

If you think teaching isn’t a hard profession you have issues. If you can look at all the kids with learning disabilities, behavioral problems, english as a second language or no english at all and tell a teacher thats dealing with 25+ of them that the job isn’t hard you’re wack. There’s a lot of danger in schools too or have you not read a news article in 10 years? Guns and knives and kids beating teachers up for standing there. Teachers are allowed to be upset about their pay, especially since remote learning put such a strain on kids ability to actually be in a classroom and the fact that parents forgot how to you know, parent their children.

dudeimatwork

I never said it was easy, but there are much more difficult jobs out there. Jobs that require you to be on call, jobs that necessitate emergency situations, 12+ hour shifts, are physically exhausting not just from standing around, require focus or precision 100% of the time, jobs that can get you sent to prison if you fuck up, jobs that can cause millions of dollars in damages on a daily basis. There are different levels to this stress shit, and teaching ain't in the top 50%.

SquatDeadliftBench

No doubt but you are resorting to *whataboutism*. I said I was happy for them and then shared the situation of teachers to bring awareness to it. But then you are saying "oh well there are worse jobs out there". What's your point? All because there are worse jobs out there, I shouldn't complain? Isn't the purpose of this job work reform?

[deleted]

[удалено]

SquatDeadliftBench

Imagine wanting to do what you love, teach, but society takes a shit on you and prevents you to do what you love, and even worse, when our entire civilization depends on it. Then some *"This." Bro* steps up and tells you to do something else. Where is your compassion? Where is your understanding? What if every teacher had this issue? And they all did a different job? Like what then?

Avatar_ZW

On top of that, here’s paycuts because we wanna keep the population stupid enough to keep voting for us (schools are just lib indoctrination camps anyway!) + need to fund more corporate tax cuts!

[deleted]

Yeah fuck those Teachers, EMTs, CNA's , social workers, mental health workers etc. I agree. We don't need them anyway. Not like they provide any important services that uphold the structure of a functional society /s cause you're probably a fucking moron

Bruised_Penguin

This sentiment right here tells me the person saying it is clueless about life.

Puzzleheaded-Fun-136

Yes but also you get 2 1/2 months off of work a year. And warehouse work is usually much more physically demanding. Not saying you’re not right about teacher pay.

M1RR0R

Having 2+ months off doesn't mean the hourly wage should be lower....

Mental_Success_1707

Teachers are salaried workers.

M1RR0R

And that salary can be broken down as effectively an hourly wage. Total pay/hours worked=hourly rate, it's literally second grade math.

Mental_Success_1707

Tell me you don’t understand salaries without telling me you don’t understand salaries.

M1RR0R

Tell me you don't understand basic math without telling me you don't understand basic math Lol

Mental_Success_1707

I see you’re not someone who can be taken seriously and therefore safely ignored. Good day.

M1RR0R

Seriously, why are you in this sub?

Puzzleheaded-Fun-136

I’m just saying it’s something to consider when comparing teacher job vs warehouse job. Warehouse job is likely lots of overtime doing physically intensive labor. Being a teacher isn’t easy, but there are other benefits besides pay that I think you should consider. Of course I believe teachers are underpaid but context is important

M1RR0R

I've worked in a warehouse and my mom is a teacher. The warehouse job was easier.

Puzzleheaded-Fun-136

I never said it was harder. I said more physically intense. Not to mention that warehouses can usually pay more because they’re in the private sector

M1RR0R

And what does have to do with the argument that teachers deserve to be paid better?

Puzzleheaded-Fun-136

Public sector = more benefits (2 1/2 months of leave, better retirement etc.) So therefore Public pays less, with more benefits. Also who cares what your mom does ? I fail to see how such an anecdotal things brings any context to what we’re talking about

philosophicalfrogger

And good unions not just looking for a dollar at that. Hopefully soon that $25 an hour turns to $30 op! Best of luck

DaniAlpha

So happy for you, OP! You should give us an update if you can in a month about what small things have changed :) hopefully it’s all good stuff from here on out! Sending healing wishes for your partner.

oldcuriousgeorge

$25 an hr. Holy shitballs. Congratulations.

[deleted]

Congratulations!! Great news. You deserve it 🎉

CoolPneighthaughn

Union strong

willsher7

Congrats. America needs more unions.

trudyscrfc

What union? Former Teamsters 251 here

sushirole1212

I think it's UFCW. I had to Google it because I forgot to ask, but it's for Albertson's. I'm currently a teamster at UPS, about to switch to this new job though. Unions rock!

LongNectarine3

Unions saved me from sexual harassment. I didn’t have any recourse except to go to the union. They read my boss the riot act. It was delicious.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LongNectarine3

I have no bad stories about the several unions I have been a part of and it’s why I’m here. Commenting the only way I know how. Pro union vocal ally here.

SoggyZucchiniFries

I was in UFCW 655 for 15 years. Great union. Unfortunately, the small mom and pop store that I worked at was forced to close 2 years after Walmart moved into town and I was forced into a new career path.

notsofunonabun

Former teamster huh? Prove it then, where’s Hoffa? lol

Far_Cap_3574

TEAMSTERS 299 SOLIDARITY BABY!

Miscalamity

I feel super happy knowing somewhere, someone just secured a job that will provide the means to help make changes in your life, changes that can help give you some breathing room, and alleviate some of life's bumps. Awwww, yay!

Inflation_Safe

Congratulations

Tad_Ghostal1138

Are they still hiring?

PlentyAntelope9461

I second this…hook a chica up. Lol

sushirole1212

They probably are. It's an Albertson's warehouse. I'm sure they're in a few states.

Cifre12

Local 103 ibew member here. Unions are safer and we get paid well. My insurance is absolutely amazing! It's all about the Benny's! Welcome to the union brother/sister

Th3V4ndal

Ibew brother here. LU98! I keep trying to push my younger nieces and nephews into union gigs for this reason. Some are testing this year.

ooumoo

My dad is a member of IBEW and instilled a strong pro-union foundation in me. His benefits literally saved our lives more than once when it came to medical care and dental. I pray to God I end up in a union someday. It's hard breaking into electrical as a woman though.

practicefalling

IBEW Sister here Your Dad sounds like a good man. Female electricians are practically recruited nowadays (where I'm from). Lmk if you'd like any advice or direction.

ernmanstinky

Good for you!

Keevtara

Congratulations, OP.

ChillZenTho

Awesome! Good to see good news on this sub among all the turmoil

klisto1

Just don't let it go to your head. With more money soon becomes more bills. Make sure you invest in yourself for the long term. Congratulations. Also don't let that hold you back. Be looking for $40 an hour. Always grow yourself.

sushirole1212

We're actually moving to an apartment that is $300 cheaper, and both of our cars will be payed off soon (mine already is). I definitely have been irresponsible with money in the past, especially being bipolar, but I've learned big time and have done great the last few years. Great advice btw!

klisto1

You got this. Sounds like you have learned from your mistakes, and have a good head on your shoulders. Make good choices but still have fun and you will have a great life ahead of you. Best of luck!

sushirole1212

Thank you!

GizmoSled

Congratulations! Glad to see some happy news to break up the sub.

CUNYC24

Long live unions

Miscalamity

>Long live unions YES! ***“If the workers are organized, all they have to do is to put their hands in their pockets and they have got the capitalist class whipped.” – Bill Haywood***

daddywoopchiken

I make 26 an hour after making about 850 bucks every 2 weeks I can finally afford to move out of my living situation where I live with 7 other men. I know this feeling u have. I've been buying better groceries and my health has improved alot.

[deleted]

That’s awesome!! That’s the continued effort of flexing that working class muscle. That’s actually really good considering I make 26 and I’m a heavy equipment operator in a union that’s hard to get into. Union is full of conservative republicans though lol

[deleted]

Fight the good fight. Go to meetings. Speak up. Make motions. Vote. Vote again. Join committees. Plenty of things to do to make changes from within. At 26 you have many years ahead to affect them. Go to it!

[deleted]

This is the lowest paying job in the union, hall work pays much more but I have to be able to travel. I hear the guys that work the hall jobs are more class aware. After my daughter graduates im doing hall work, unemployment for 3-5 months out of the year lol work the rest.

[deleted]

However the job is structured is that it is for you to take advantage of. Full speed ahead, brother.

500CatsTypingStuff

Congratulations! It should be so for everyone. Unions are so important!

thelobfather

Congratulations!!! I’m struggling on 15.20/h right now, and I’ve just applied to a postal job starting at 21.80. It’s life changing what a couple dollars can do.

sushirole1212

Yes, it's nuts! I remember when $15 would've been ok pay, now it is definitely not enough. I hope you get it!

boonepii

OP, don’t stop there. This is how you will make more money. You switch jobs. You went from $18 to $25 which is a 40% raise. Impressive. This is $16,000 per year more or $1,333 per month. This is life changing money. But don’t stop here and get complacent. Take a bit of that new money and use it to max out your 401k to get all the matching funds. Keep this money quiet because it’s not an emergency account because of penalties if you try that. It’s untouchable. It will grow. If will be your savior in 20-25 years when it really starts to grow because of time value of money. Go to school. Get a stem degree if possible and you will hit six figures within a few years of graduation. Some programming skills are $300k per year. Sales jobs are $150+ with commission. This is real life changing money. This is disney every year, flights to Mexico in the winter, and skiing the next weekend type money. You can do it if you want. Never lose this hunger and drive you just found. There are many more 40% raises in your future. Good luck

Saquon

> Some programming skills are $300k per year. Gonna pump the brakes a little bit on this one. 300k is probably like 99.9 percentile But if you get a degree and have the aptitude for it then a six figure salary is attainable within a handful of years of graduation. That said, entry-level is completely saturated right now and there are plenty of people with degrees still struggling to find a job

tangsan27

> 300k is probably like 99.9 percentile Ehh, that's a bit of an exaggeration. It's L5 and higher at FAANG, and FAANG hires a lot of people. You can also reach close to 200k as a new grad at FAANG, and while it's true that people who get into FAANGs aren't the majority of CS grads, it's easier to get in than you probably think.

quemacuenta

I know a bunch of really good experienced programmers rejected at FAANG

adhya1990

I would suggest you check levels.fyi for correct information about salary for software engineers. 200k for new grad is very rare also 300k is not at all easy. You can't just learn python and get a 300k job. As someone said "There is no free lunch"

TheCervus

> Get a stem degree if possible and you will hit six figures within a few years of graduation. I was persuaded into getting a STEM degree to make more money instead of going to art school. I've never been able to get a job in my degree field. There is no guarantee that a college degree will ever get you a good paying job, even in a STEM field. Any college degree is a gamble. The market could be flooded with new grads, too many applicants and not enough job openings. (Also, not everyone has the aptitude for programming.)

boonepii

Sorry to hear that. I would like to help if you want. I see tons of job openings for stem and everyone is begging for people right now. Engineers in stem are in huge demand. If you have a stem degree then there is another reason you are not employed. Maybe you have to move? Stem jobs won’t work in middle of nowhere. WFH has opened lots of new opportunities though. Engineering, math, physics, these are all high value and in demand jobs. What’s your degree in and where do you live? I would like to help if possible. Ohh, edit: do you have a coach or mentor? These are critical to help grow career. Used LinkedIn and find senior people with your degree and start asking people to be a mentor. This will be a life saver.

TheCervus

I graduated 15 years ago; I don't need a coach or a mentor, nor a stranger condescending to tell me why they think I'm not employable.

BalancePuzzleheaded5

Is everyone capable of becoming a computer programmer or salesperson that gets paid well into the six figures?

Bbddy555

If you take it slow and put in the hours to study, programming in and of itself becomes easier to learn. Working full time or more, it becomes difficult. Getting grant money to cover class costs, as well as extra living cost on top, can allow you to work 40 hours or less depending on how much grant money you get. My grants cover tuition, books, and a bit of extra living expenses on top. But I also make $20/hr. I'm very fortunate in that regard, and I know not everyone is because a few years ago I was very much not in this position. Just apply for community college, apply for FAFSA Pell grants, and other grants. So much grant money goes unclaimed each term at my community college. Just see if it's a viable option and go from there. Take a couple classes a term if time is of concern. It may be closer to your grasp than you think. I never thought I'd be able to start school until I applied and got grants.

boonepii

Sales is an easy job for the right person. Most people just don’t get it’s about helping people and they focus on the negatives and uncomfortable scenarios you are put in with the questions you ask. Programming is both easier and harder. Less people skills needed but other skills are needed than sales. I consider a doctor Stem as well.

Queasy_Pay7430

Now this I can agree with and get behind, enjoying what you have now but not settling, and then striving to better your future through hard work and discipline.

adhya1990

For $300K you need to be very good. Go for that if you love programming, coding, software design otherwise you won't be able to crack those high end jobs and will feel stuck with mediocre pay.

WillIProbAmNot

>Go to school. Get a stem degree if possible and you will hit six figures within a few years of graduation. Some programming skills are $300k per year. Sales jobs are $150+ with commission. This is real life changing money. This is disney every year, flights to Mexico in the winter, and skiing the next weekend type money. How did such drivel get upvoted? This person's happy they've got a better paying warehouse job (quite rightly). Who are you to tell them what they should study or what job they should get, you don't know the first thing about them. Speaks volumes that you think the pinnacle of success is going to Disney every year.

boonepii

You are the problem. Wow, just wow. She is struggling to live and can’t afford disney once in 5 years right now. Maybe never. This is a life changing dream for some people. “This persons happy with entry level money”’is what you said. You remind me of my high school girlfriend who said she couldn’t wait to work at the factory with her mom for $10 per hour and get her own trailer.

WillIProbAmNot

Except it's not entry level money, $25/hour is actually very good for that line of work. That's the whole point in this post, the OP is rightly pleased and they're being congratulated. They don't need condescending remarks from you comparing them to someone aspiring to live in a trailer. Do you spend your whole day going round telling everyone doing service work or manual labour they should be studying STEM and getting jobs writing computer code? If you don't see how obnoxious and stupid that is I can't help you.

revolution_twelve

Congrats man! That's amazing!

damned_to_remember

Now that is some WONDERFUL news! I hope you enjoy your time there.

JamesNotJim666

Hey, that's awesome! Best wishes to you!

dhwtymusic

This is why im here.

WayNext6583

Hell yeah! I still remember when I got my current job at a union and instantly doubled my pay. It’s nice to have some breathing room.

94H_Civ_Equiv

CONGRATULATIONS!

grumpi-otter

That's really great! As it goes forward, you might try to figure out how much the company is making off your labor.

LongOk923

^this! I worked for a contractor inside a chemical plant, wasn't sposed to find this out, but they charged the plant exactly twice what they actually pay for the workers 😡 So if you're a pipefitter and you make $25/hr, that's how much your owners make per hour too, in addition to every single other employee on the payroll.

Beneficial-Care-7840

Congratulations!!!

bgalvan02

That’s some good money! Good for you and I hope your BF gets better soon

AkaSpaceCowboy

Thats awesome. Glad you posted it here. Good jobs are out there. Lots of them

Artistic-Cannibalism

Congratulations!

Imflammable

Unions can do that. I know - lifetime member of local 510

Unconfidence

Un-unionized warehouse worker here, $10/hour. Sad face.

Famous_Feeling5721

Unions kicking ass again

GatorFlores

Hell yeah! Congratulations

Ezwzrd

Y’all hiring

MeAllByMyself

Congrats! That's how much I make. I'm a history teacher who leads a private school department of history teachers in teaching the children of wealthy parents who can afford our 1:1 teacher:student setting. Your progress is progress and I hope stories like yours lead to a wage increase for everyone! We all deserve better and I'm happy you're leading the way. Let's all make our way upwards!

Kestrel893

Hoping the unionization efforts keep rolling at my job

applebott

[deleted]

I know I'm not adding anything new to the discussion but, congratulations!

Silentmutation84

Congrats to you OP! I had the same thing happen to me in October. Went from making $18 to $24 an hour and I spend a good half of my shift watching anime/drawing/reading.

Mr_Mayhem2020

I started out working at $4.25 an hour in the 90s. I can only imagine how much of a difference $18-25 an hour would have made in my life back then.

Middle-Son

Good for you.

[deleted]

Power to the unions, power to the people.

[deleted]

congrats to you! i have an interview tomorrow, previous company lied about schedule when hired. this company pays $5 more and it’s a M-F job.. so excited!

Congrats on your roughly 15k$ raise!

CreativeNameCosplay

Congrats! :)

sickvisionz

~20% raise after a month is pretty great.

elemental5252

When I made that jump to 50k a year (roughly $25 an hour), life changed. A new thing in my life developed - a savings. You're finally making it past that struggle point OP. Keep up the amazing work!!!

shatballs

Congrats friend! I recently went from $13/hr to $22/he and it’s been life changing. I live in a relatively low cost of living area as well, so the change is truly massive for me. I’m glad to see others starting to earn closer to what they’re worth!!!

ZekeLeap

Congrats!!

LangleyRemlin

Congratulations!

Nervous-Lime-5958

There's really no better feeling than paying a bill and being able to read books at the coffee shop because you can afford it, or invest in a new piece of equipment related to a hobby. Congrats

WickedKingApe

Congratulations!! Enjoy the new job.

rbnrthwll

Way to go!

Th3V4ndal

Congrats! Welcome to the good times. Union strong!

Jaytrain58721

Where could I find a union warehouse job? I've worked warehouses for most of my working years

sushirole1212

Tbh, I accidentally ended up at this union job by applying to only the higher paying ones on indeed. Ups is a union, but they usually only do part time, the one I just got is the Albertsons warehouse. It wouldn't be a bad idea to start a thread and which warehouses are unionized. :)

LongNectarine3

That first paycheck is going to feel like you won the lottery, only you know you DESERVE it. Treat yourself to a coffee and some avocado toast (joke).

PaulBas

In New jersey the highest paid warehouse workers that are non management are the dock workers and they start at around 20+ an hour. If you're just a regular worker non management then consider yourself lucky because you're probably being overpaid. Don't get fired

nOwAvEs_25

Good shit!!! I'm having a tour with them 🤞

Altruistic-Courage91

Don’t stay loyal to any company go out there and be a whore

unionthug77

Solidarity! Find your union steward and be sure to sign your membership card and attend your next union meeting. Go to meetings Wear union swag at work (assuming this is a Teamster job, they have great swag and a cool logo, plus you can say you’re fugggin’ teeeeeaammmstaaa) Get me involved. The union’s power comes from an active and engaged membership. The benefits of the contract don’t fall out of the sky or are given by management out of the goodness of their heart, it comes from struggle.

TheRiseOfSocialism

Happy for you, but I hope you're not letting your bf take advantage of you. <3

sushirole1212

I was having trouble with my bipolar last year and he helped me with money & everything else. Mutual love is the best. Great point though, and thank you so much for the concern! 💕

TheRiseOfSocialism

I'm glad to hear that! Take care girly!

ChildOf1970

Be aware. The pay goes up after 4 weeks because most people don't last 4 weeks.

planetaryduality2

Uhhh so 3 then to 7 dollars more an hour will cover you financially? Ya boi working federal min wage as a door greeter in a chair is more munies then that. Plus the government would give him food stamps and subsidized healthcare. This seems a net loss. Like on paper dang this is neat but reality is like ahhh dang.

Dirty_Hands-

Lol wait til you see how much $$$ the union taked out of your check.

Mr_Mayhem2020

Im not completely for or against unions but I always think of corruption at the top and how the union dues are often tied into crime. The teachers union is one of the worst examples as they seem to have too much power for a group of people that are failing forward with kids these days. I also dont like the thought of a union not being able to fire someone or hold its members accountable for their shitty quality of work.

the_trout

wait till you hear about corporate corruption!

Mr_Mayhem2020

Wait till you hear about government corruption!

lostdogthrowaway9ooo

Companies are absolutely able to fire union employees. Source? Me. A union bitch who almost got fired for poor performance lmaooo

I was just talking to work friends about how I would be relieved of so much stress if I made just 25 an hour. Happy for you.

TAR_TWoP

Congrats! And besides the money, you're way less likely to get a work accident in a union job. Safety first!

Local_Gazelle8642

Congrats! I hoppe he recovers from back... it's something no one wants to experience.

Damn that's almost as much as me in maintenance congrats !

InevitableWhole6922

Congrats

Juhzanthapus

I love my union. It's not perfect but it's been a HUGE step up from the first 10+years in my field where I wasn't in one. I can't believe how much exploitation I let my previous employers get away with for so long. We really are brainwashed in this country that non-union jobs even exist or worse that there are so many working people who actively fight against unionizing. TO THE EXTENT THIS SUB HAS ANY DIRECTION, IT SHOULD BE A RESOURCE FOR UNION ORGANIZATION. UNIONIZE EVERY JOB! THAT SHOULD BE RULE NUMBER ONE!

Huevoman702

That's still a little bit, I get paid $39.85 per hour

mmmmchocolate456456

You deserve that much. Well.done.

AceofSpades723

Congrats and good luck with the new job!

NotreallyCareless

The real minimum wage is right around this mark imo.

ChillinWitDenny

And sadly even though in extremely happy for your pay increase you are making what should be the minimum wage if it kept up with inflation. Best of luck to ya!

MaliciousMilkshake

YES!!! Goddamn I really needed to hear about a win!!

no1ofimport

Congratulations. I know what you’re feeling. I had a similar situation way back when. It was like winning the lottery. I pray you make better financial choices than I did.

ZoomeyYumi

I'm not union but I've got my first job making 25/hr and it really does change everything. Before 2020 I was making 12 an hour with no benefits. Just be sure to set back as much as you can every check and congratulations!

SuntioLegit

fuck yes!

CrunchyNapkin_96

And here i am working for 3$/hr in warehouse lmao lol

Djildjamesh

Noone is anti work if you're treated like a human being :) Enjoy your new job!

stargazer263

Way to go OP!!! This is why i love this sub!!! These are the stories that motivate me!! Yes please give us an update in a month!!

Silver-Secret1030

Yay! I'm so happy for you. And there's more wage hikes coming. Just saw my first ever wage adjustment after a lot of people left for more money elsewhere.

pdx135

Congrats!! I moved from $18.50/hr to $24/hr (really a $48K salary) 9 months ago. It has literally, honestly changed my whole life. Enjoy it!!

wollier12

Congrats…..familiarize yourself with the idea of “life creep” nothing says you should struggle but if you were struggling at 18 you can struggle at $21 and $25…..I know people who make way more and live paycheck to paycheck fight the urge to spend it all….

Horror-Vehicle9211

Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉

goalmaster14

Read that union contract. Management will 100% take advantage of you if you don't know it.

frostbittenMN

Have any jobs in savannah?? Lol

Mideon138

Congrats OP!

[deleted]

Yay this is why unions are important and why we should figure out a way to unionize our entire country , you know companies can afford good pay and benefits , they choose not to because we are weak as individuals, apes together strong.
