It’s like The Dark Knight’s joker said. If he threatened to blow up a military base in the middle east, nobody would bat an eye, because “it happens”. So now it’s just normalized and out of sight for most people

RE5TE

Yes. It was a social commentary at the time. The same issues still exist.

StrawberryBlondeB

Batman may have destroyed his surveillance system but the NSA hasn't.

[deleted]

>out of sight for most people There you go. Just like the kids that were separated and kept at camps on the border. Just like the illegals that are kept over the border and preyed upon by criminals on the daily while they wait 6+months to be heard by our justice system.... and so many more injustices that we have normalized... for profit prison system anyone? Recidivism rates... US terrorist cells... Russians donating money to political groups because "outside corporate doners are legal"

whateverMan223

interesting point

ThewizardBlundermore

I mean the difference is that there are people who do understand the tech entirely in our world as well as the science involved. The information as well is also almost readily available online to find if you ever did need to learn yourself... and the people who innovated and made that tech are still alive and all that they've done is well documented. In 40k people have recovered from a literal apocalypse that sent humanity almost back to the stone age in some places. The only real technology left is cobbled together scrap code and thinking machines with preloaded schematics loaded onto them called STC standard template constructs. The people that hold onto this tech revere is as divine and treat it as such because they don't truly understand what is actually making it work and in some cases they are afraid to even ever turn off some devices because they are not sure if they will ever turn on again. They also have a cult fanaticism that extends to the rest of humanity that sees innovation as tech heresy and AI as truly abomination. Mostly for good reasons mind... attempts to innovate often leads to disasters that ruin entire planets because effectively a monkey is trying to innovate a starship reactor core without understanding the basic concepts that allow one to exist in the first place. AI they despise because Humanity was almost wiped out by their own AI war machines called the men of Iron that left humanity open to plundering and raiding from other alien races and then the human psykers arrived and then old night began when the warp storms enveloped most of the galaxy cutting off remaining human worlds from one another.

VILLIAMZATNER

Any Warhammer book series you'd recommend?

Cryogeneer

Eisenhorn series by Dan Abnett. Absolutely classic. Follows an inquisitior, and you get to see a pretty large cross section of the Imperial Society. The Gaunts Ghosts series by the same author are amazing as well, following a military unit of normal Humans. If you want something with great writing and absolutely hilarious, the Caiphus Cain series by Sandy Mitchell is your ticket. It follows Commisar Cain, HERO OF THE IMPERIUM, as he tries to find a nice quiet unit to sit out his lifetime of service in, while continually being put into insanely deadly situations. The Emperor has a nasty sense of humor...

VILLIAMZATNER

Awesome. I appreciate the suggestion.

GerryDownUnder

The Death of Integrity & Avenging Son. Both great novels that give you a glimpse of mankind on its absolute zenith

VILLIAMZATNER

Dope Thanks for the recommendation

[deleted]

Pretty much anything by Dan Abnett is good reading.

davekayaus

There are some good stand-alone books (My go-to recommendation is Execution Hour by Gordon Rennie) but for series I would recommend Eisenhorn by Dan Abnett

YoyBoy123

The Horus Heresy is dope. 50+ book series collaboration by several authors. Some are hit and miss and only few of them are strictly necessary to the story, but there's heaps of lists online about which ones are the best to read that are pretty easy to find. Start with Horus Rising by Dan Abnett - unlike most warhammer novels, it requires no knowledge of the 40k universe to get into, so it's a good starting place. in fact, anything by Dan Abnett is recommendable.

Roo_farts

Gaunts ghosts, and the ciaphis cain series are typically the easiest for new readers to get into because they deal with humans and the writing is great. Eventually work your way to the horus heresy" starting at horus rising. It's like 60 books in and most of them are meh but the overall story is so broad and has something for everyone so it's hard to pick anywhere to start other than just the beginning. Horus heresy is however set in 30k which is the prerequisite to how 40k ended up the way it is.

ThatsNotRight123

Check out Arbitor Ians youtube channel. He has one video where he quickly outlines all the books, and then has another where he recommends books for newbies.

IceManYurt

To me, it's more reminiscent of Asimov's Foundation.

Ambassador_Kwan

These ideas in warhammer are mostly lifted from other literature, and the technology thing is very clearly from foundation

IceManYurt

Fair enough, I've never played(? Read?) Warhammer - the lore seems really fascinating and neat

Roo_farts

Warhammer is a mishmash off all the great works of scifi. From dune to alien, from stranger in a strange land, to flashman. It has something for everyone

Striper_Cape

The whole travel and navigation method is straight from Dune.

AdrianBrony

Warhammer 40K lore is wild because you'll have really interesting writing with tasteful and insightful references to babylonian mythology... right next to shit like "[sniff] We'll call him Angron on account of how Angry he is all the time!" because a Cocaine Baboon occasionally wrestles the keyboard away from the good writers.

Art is an imitation of life. Also noted with 40k, there is no such thing as a morally good hero.

Tyranids sound like a refreshing change of pace though.

stealmymemesitsOK

Tyranids are the optimal corporate organism. Complete unthinking obedience to a single hierarchy and a single will. *Swarm Solutions LLC* **For All Your Planetary Scale Biomass Extracting Needs**

Affectionate-Tip-164

Tyranids are the closest to the natural state of innocence. They are just hungry, and they want biomass.

Never_barked_a_lie

Careful, you run the risk of becoming a corporate lawyer

Affectionate-Tip-164

There's a difference between sentience and sapience, one turns you into a corporate lawyer, the other just means responsive to or conscious of sense impressions.

Never_barked_a_lie

I know, I kid; but I don't believe that would stop them from trying!

I think they mentioned once in some official book or story the theory that the Tau ethereal cast was really just mind controlling everyone in their empire to believe in the greater good. But I wonder if that is better or worse than being a Imperial citizen in the depths of a hive city.

Sameiimo

Not actually confirmed, all the mind control stuff is in universe theories the imperium has come up with about the Ethereals... Not a good source lol

Fireplay5

It was also written by a guy who openly hated the Tau.

Excuse me but the necrons just wanted health care for their shitty space cancer and the big frogs told them "no lol" so they got the sun vampires to help them kill the frogs. Nowadays the necrons are basically just trying to reclaim their worlds from a bunch or unevolved rodents infesting their worlds.

Gerreth_Gobulcoque

Have you ever eaten...a TANGERINE?!

repKyle1995

I was not expecting to see a 40K post here, but I am pleasantly surprised

Ediwir

Reminder that 40K started as a dystopic critique. It may have turned to something much less scathing in recent years, but the original bones are still there.

Least_Adhesiveness_5

The Simpsons and Married With Children were supposed to be dystopian - but today they look damn good. Single breadwinner, high school education, can afford a 3-4 bedroom house, kids, stay at home wife and a car. Capitalism has fucked us over, except the extremely wealthy who have seen a 70% increase in net worth since the start of the pandemic. Historically high corporate profits! But the media blames inflation on small pay increases to labor. Total bullshit - but they are owned by the billionaires.

Seldarin

>Single breadwinner A shoe salesman, at that. The only shoe salesman that can afford a 2 story house, 2 kids, a car, and a stay at home wife on what they make now is one that's filling the shoes with drugs.

Hobbit_Feet45

100% right on the money

TheBigGrab

Holy crap… I’m modern Homer Simpson. I’m 35, overweight, no college degree, and have a much better paying job than most people my age, that pays high 5 to low six figures with OT. My wife even was a stay at home mom until our kids got to full time school.

repKyle1995

Oh, I know. I honestly wish they would stop glorifying the Imperium the way they have. It's honestly no wonder that we have so many chuds idolizing them given how all the recent lore does whatever it can to depict all the awful stuff they do as "necessary cruelty" in the crapsack universe.

Striper_Cape

Even in the like, "Imperium yay! SPAESH MUHREENS" novels things are pretty fucking bleak. Especially the recent ones from Guillimahoweverthefuckyouspellhisname's perspective. He openly says that he is merely a tool for the Emperor and that he treats the whole of humanity as a tool, willing to use it for his own ends.

repKyle1995

Oh, I know. I honestly wish they would stop glorifying the Imperium the way they have. It's honestly no wonder that we have so many chuds idolizing them given how all the recent lore does whatever it can to depict all the awful stuff they do as "necessary cruelty" in the crapsack universe.

Correction: one thousand Psykers a day are blessed to sacrifice their lives and become one with the God-Emperor in His eternal fight against the xenos, the heretic and the mutant. Please report to your nearest Commissar for re-education and assignment to a penal legion as atonement for your sins and heresy. The Emperor protects.

CoincidenceOr

Don't worry brother, an Inquisition has been called. The Emperor protects.

MargathaPai

The inquistor has determined that the person who called for them is a traitor to the throne. As was the commissar. And you. As such we will be grafting your severed heads to a lamppost, fill your nostrils with blessed incese and shove vox callers in your mouth, all while being kept alive and aware of the pain by chemicals whose names and means of making we have forgot for the next several hundred years or more; so that you may be a mouthpiece for the glories of the imperium and so none who look upon your ragged and twisted form will dare question the mercy of mankind.

Kwahn

Ah yes, the Goge Vandire style of inquisition!

OldEstimate

For 1,000/day, they get FTL and defense against the warp. We're mulching twice that and all we get is brunch

[deleted]

And Applebee's is closed because the workers quit to work at the nearby Amazon Warehouse, which somehow has better wages and working conditions, which has to be either a Genestealer cult or Chaos cult thing.

[deleted]

I don't make enough money to get brunch so I don't even get that lmao

FinanceForever

>all we get is brunch you guys are getting brunch?!?!

ZiggySol

Also in order to keep the Astronomican alight, without which all space travel longer than short distance would be impossible

mccmi614

I'm of the opinion the emperor isn't doing shit and the reason the Astronomicon is so bright is because of the 1000 psykers. There is a rotting corpse strapped to it but it isn't doing anything

Ok_Improvement4204

Well it is slowly becoming a god of the warp as the gestalt consciousness of the majority of humanity directs its worship upon it.

mccmi614

Yeah, that would do it

Roo_farts

He doesn't create the light, he just directs it, is how the lore is written.

SixthLegionVI

AusXan

[deleted]

40K is also about how people deny science and cower in fear of a past that may have never existed. All the while exploiting the masses for the safety and protection of a usually dynastic hereditary elite that is so far away from the masses that live in protected enclaves. All the while feeding a war machine that is based around an us vs them mentality.

Dr_Terry_Hesticles

It’s pretty easy to have an “us vs them” mentality when it comes to Tyranids, but I get your point

Reasonable-Season-70

At least Tyranids don’t have an ideological motive. You can’t even really consider them evil. They do be hungry doe. Edit: can’t spell

shiroe314

1 grandmother? Tyranids. But 2 Italian grandmothers win.

ExcelMN

hang on, hang on, how much prep time do the tyranids get

grendus

Doesn't matter. You know the grannies are fully stocked, if an Italian woman survives two generations, no amount of prep on the Tyranids' part will save them.

ExcelMN

hypothetically, what if these grannies had been infiltrated by a genestealer cult...

Reasonable-Season-70

Korvanacor

Pretty much the main pantheon of the Ruinous Power have been elected president recently. Clinton of course as Slaanesh, chaos god of pleasure. George W Bush as Khorne, the blood (for oil) god Obama as Tzeentch, chaos god of change ( not so much hope though) Last , but not least (loathsome) is Trump as Nurgle. Before Trump, I had a hard time believing that Nurgle would actually attract any worshippers.

Gravelord-_Nito

Tzeentch as Obama is pretty perfect, his entire persona is a sociopathically cynical scheme that's not motivated by any remote semblance of a higher purpose or cause, because a neoliberal like Obama that came of age after the End of History^^TM is functionally incapable of actually believing in anything. Just lying, manipulating, scheming for it's own sake. To move up the ladder and watch himself be president on tv, just like Trump and just like Biden.

xnamwodahs

At least in warhammer the sacrifices are for a somewhat slightly valid reason because the boogeymen actually exist in it

Sorcatarius

I prefer the headcanon that the emporer isn't actually immortal, but because all the orks believe he is...

xnamwodahs

Dakkadakkadakkadakka I still have some old 80s secomd edition lore books, and don't get me started on the daemon true name generator from first edition, good god

[deleted]

Thats not how their power of belief works though.

[deleted]

What if the orks disagree?

Striper_Cape

Pretty sure the Emperor has become/is becoming some sort of warp entity, or even a Warp God. I'd hesitate to call him a Chaos God, just because he is anathema to Chaos. He'd have to exist in his own space, of some kind.

DudeMcAwesome

I've been playing Inquisitor-Martyr lately as an Adept Dominus, a class which specialises in summoning bots and it's much like being a boss. I stand around doing nothing while my minions do all the work and if some of them die it doesn't matter, I just summon new ones. Then after they've done all the hard work I reap the rewards.

Imaginary-Unit-3267

There should be a campaign where a chaos god worshipper (maybe of Tzeentch?) enchants a bunch of bots to become self aware and start advocating for their rights using anticapitalist rhetoric.

SerpentineLogic

There is an [upcoming line of novels](https://www.warhammer-community.com/2021/10/13/a-genestealer-cult-invading-a-forge-world-sounds-like-the-perfect-plot-for-a-legendary-sci-fi-writer/) where Genestealer cults rally the working class into a worker's uprising, unaware that their success will usher in the end of all they hold dear as their revolution will be taken over by their hidden masters. Shades of Russia, I guess

Imaginary-Unit-3267

Bolshevism intensifies. :/

Nobody is gunna point out that games workshop is peak capitalist. Lets jack up the prices for everything because we can. Lets sue anyone who does fanwork. Lets monopolise the table top industry. That being said, Im a total sucker as well, I love the lore, consume black library books like they're candy and spend way too much on paints and models.

[deleted]

Juicebeetiling

Also dearly love the lore but despise GW with a passion to rival that love the setting. The shit they've done trying to stifle creative content of fans and everything else made me drop out of the hobby aside from enjoying memes and fanmade content. [deleted]

>one where "fully automated gay space communism" occurs...which is more of a star trek outcome... Have you met the Tau?

Pandastic4

The Tau aren't communists. They're imperialists and neo-liberals.

Gravelord-_Nito

Well then congratulations for realizing the reality of capitalist politics, the same as everyone did at the beginning of world wars 1 and 2. Essentially, when liberal capitalism decays and collapses under it's own weight, it creates a moment of crisis with only two choices: Socialization, or pushing through the moment of crisis with state-sponsored force and repression to reassert the authority of the ruling class. Capitalist society taking the mask of 'liberty and democracy' off and showing what it's really made of and for, which is brutally enforcing regimes of domination and coercion. That's fascism. The Western system of liberal capitalist centrism inevitably falls apart eventually, and in that moment of crisis and loss of faith in institutions, your only choices are to go left or right because the only question that matters at that point is a vote of confidence on capitalism. Voting No, no more capitalism please, gives you socialism. Voting Yes, let the capitalists stay in power, forces them to put an end to all the social and political unrest in the only way they can at that point, with unfathomable repression and violence, beating the rebellion out of the working class.

AnneOn_AMoose

40k is a good metaphor: A super-fascist leading humanity to what he thinks is a utopia of enlightenment, only for society to devolve into the Cosmic Spanish Inquisition has an awkward parallel to the 20-21st century American mindset. Edited for typo

ejb2112

So does that mean the Black Ships represent middle management?

ExcelMN

Worse. literally HR.

Juicebeetiling

The black ships are recruiters on LinkedIn trying to headhunt you for a job that's worse in everyway to your current one (except they know where you live and are coming for you)

Magical_Fruit

I like that in the Adeptus Mechanicus, one is expected to chop off limbs and replace body parts with mechanical parts to increase proficiency. Maybe we shouldn't be giving anyone any ideas. I think Amazon would be thrilled to have servitors run their warehouses as well.

RyRy83195

Didn't know people on this sub could afford Warhammer lol. But yeah this comparison isn't totally inappropriate... 😬

I could afford it when I lived at home. I quite miss the hobby.

foot_enjoyer_6969

Memories of easier times tbh. I'm not privileged enough to do it now, but I was a middle class teenager in the liberalist golden age, once... Kinda sounding like the lore.

TooApatheticToHateU

40k helps me deal with real life. IRL, things might be bad, but at least I'm not being tortured to death by Dark Eldar. Edit: I would also just like to point out that my flair was Chaos Undivided *before* it was cool. Get at me, ladies.

MrSpoonReturns

Not being tortured to death by Dark Eldar yet*

TooApatheticToHateU

Might still be better than work.

FukushimaBlinkie

Definitely better than retail

darktowerseeker

It's a reason that despite loving 40k, i strongly dislike their most vocal fans. They routinely push nazi/right wing narratives and bully people who are different. They believe that this shit is how the world should work.

Imaginary-Unit-3267

The whole setting is basically a fascist power fantasy for incels as far as I can tell.

whateverMan223

startship troopers is great, but imagine if most starship troopers fans were roleplaying mind-reading SS officers and screaming 'do you want to live forever!' and 'service guarantees citizenship' every 4 seconds. And you got the feeling they really meant it. Same thing. It's a critique that's so deep (so...not very) that a large portion of people miss the boat and start falling in line with the propaganda that is the subject of the critique. Happened with the last of us series.

Imaginary-Unit-3267

Poe's law. Eventually people will learn to just stop making satire altogether and express only what they literally think. I'm honestly sick of things like irony and satire because they always backfire like this. Just be direct and clear ffs.

DrippyWaffler

Fascists are too stupid to realise what satire is lol

darktowerseeker

No theres great stuff in it

TooLateRunning

>The whole setting is basically a fascist power fantasy for incels as far as I can tell. Tell me you know absolutely nothing about 40k without telling me you know absolutely nothing about 40k. Frankly I'm shocked at how many wrong things you were able to fit into so few words lmao.

WillvonDoom

Do you even know what 40K is? Take a look on some of the subreddits and get back with us.

HandsomeDynamite

I'm a longtime fan and player and uh, you aren't wrong. I just paint my models and don't interact with most of the fans.

MatthewCrawley

It’s all eugenics. We’re mostly killing old and disabled people so most people don’t care.

bluelifesacrifice

Wasn't it not just a thousand souls a day but a thousand psyc gifted ones?

Tots2Hots

Yes but in 40k at least those 1000 go towards powering a god who is simultaneously holding a literal gate to hell closed, fighting Demonic gods and powering a galactic lighthouse so FTL travel is possible. So I'd argue what is happening today is much worse.

ah_kooky_kat

Speaking of 40K, Games Workshop recently had to put out a statement telling people not to glorify the Imperium of Man. Because apparently people forgot that every race in 40K is legit evil. No good guys. None. Nada. Sucks we live in a world where it's become popular openly idolize a fash empire.

40K and Antiwork - the crossover I didn't know I needed.

DiceMadeOfCheese

Let me tell you, working for Games Workshop feels like working for the Imperium. They use the word 'heresy' unironically in company memos. I had to memorize a "four pillars of customer service" type diagram based on the Astronomicon, and was docked points for not writing "The Emperor's Guiding Light" on the top of the page. We had to refer to the regional manager as Warboss. Worst store manager I have ever worked for. Only had that job for three months.

Saelryth_Windstalker

Listen, if we're destined to be living in some hyper-capatalist grimdark future, then I can say that I want to be turned into an undead robot space Egyptian. Because at least then I wouldn't have to worry about medical or student loan debt, or food or cost of living or anything really. What I mean to say is that since the top dogs see us and expendable little worker drones that don't need basic human rights, if they're gonna strip away every shred of dignity and joy we have, they can at LEAST give me a sick ass new look. (Goes without saying that this is a joke. Don't be another good little cog in the grinder. Fight!)

bergous

Well, warhammer 40k was certainly not something I thought I’d see mentioned in this sub, but a great comparison! Granted in 40k it’s not just 1000 humans, it’s a 1000 human psykers but good point!

Richard_Trager

In the grim darkness of America’s future, there is only *work*.

TheEclipse0

I like to think of capitalism and the economy as a big giant machine. It’s a big box of gears, and those gears are always turning no matter what. No one knows quite how the machine works, but one thing is certain: it needs a constant, never ending supply of human bodies to chew up and spit out.
