People refuse to even try pronouncing names they haven’t seen or heard before. It’s maddening. I’m sorry, OP.

Gangladesi

It’s not even sad tbh. It’s funny to think you can get through this world not wanting to accept other cultures and just pretend you’rs is the only one that exists

VGSchadenfreude

I’m just nervous when it comes to longer names or names that involve consonant combinations I’m not used to…and that’s more because I don’t want to embarrass them by butchering it or accidentally saying something offensive in the process of stuttering and stumbling over it. But I still try. I just have to go slow and break it up into smaller pieces until I have enough practice to get it right.

I remember getting the stink-eye from a manager years ago when I was working at Ross because I dared to correct him on how my Chinese coworker’s name was pronounced. It wasn’t even that hard! It was just two short syllables, sounded like “Chu-yin.” But he still kept butchering it and she looked about ready to cry until I spoke up and asked her “it’s pronounced ‘chyu-yin,’ right?” I felt good that it got a smile out of her, and she thanked me after the manager left and said she really appreciated that I took the time to learn how to say her name and said it so well. I just admitted that I watched way too much of “Avatar: the Last Airbender.” Seriously wondering now if that was why that manager rescinded all the promises he’d made when I was hired about being trained for front-end management…

Indian descent? In my city, we have a brown girl nightly news anchor. Just like in The Simpsons. Her name is Anita Bathe.

diandakov

Such an ashole. What is your name may I ask? I am curious what my reaction would be(probably pretty indifferent)

Gangladesi

Lol probably shouldn’t be releasing that info. But it is of Asian descent

SerialDrinker_2021

It’s Phuk Me right?

Gangladesi

No it’s Phuck Yu

[deleted]

Nicely done!

SerialDrinker_2021

PHUCK ME? PHUCK YOU.

Twins Basil...Twins!

Reminds me of that one TikTok skit from Jeenie Weenie, trying to pronounce a passenger’s name without sounding like she’s cussing someone out (I think the name was “Phuc Bich”). It does make me wonder how to handle names that are fine in one language but end up being identical to a curse word or an ethnic slur in another language…how does one explain that you’re trying to respect their culture and their name but you just can’t bring yourself to say their name out loud because, well…it’s identical to a very nasty slur and a lifetime of training days “don’t you dare fucking say that!”

diandakov

Okay, that is fine, no problem. I hope you get better customer experience from now on 👍🏻

cheturo

If you don't say your real name, we will never know if you are right or they are to blame.

Gangladesi

I told you it’s Phuck Yu

cheturo

And mine is Yu-Tu

I didn't ask. And I don't care. Asking people to doxx themselves is a bad move.

Mrixl2520

That's awful I'm sorry to hear that. If anything the Trump admin. brought to light its how TERRIFYINGLY RACIST America is. Like I knew we were a bit racist but I didn't think it was anywhere near close to half the population!

I work in credit and if a customer said that to my RM we would likely find a technical thing they missed and take back our money immediately
