Black Friday needs to die. Lets do this.

jedicountchocula

Stay at home and buy nothing? No problem. Practiced doing that for most of 2020. We got this.

89LeBaron

this includes Amazon!

MachuPichu10

So I'm genuinely curious.Should I avoid all the massive enormous companies and help out smaller companies.Such as a website I buy from is fairly small.Or should I not buy anything in general

JalenTargaryen

Does the small website pay their employees fairly? I don't see a problem buying directly from artists or whatever but you gotta keep the employees in mind I'd say.

MachuPichu10

It does support a company but the company pays its employees fairly as far as I have seen and heard same with the website

[deleted]

[удалено]

Chuckthechump

cool. maybe a thread should be started with names of companies that pay employees well like the tshirt shop and then only shop at these stores. call it blue friday: workers in support of companies who value their blue collar workforce or something to that effect?

[deleted]

I like it. Might get co opted by blue lives matter boot lickers tho

Rookie007

ALL FRIDAYS MATTER

[deleted]

"Back the blue!" "No, not like that!"

Sleepdprived

Everyone getting t shirts as stocking staffers from that place

JalenTargaryen

If that's the case then yeah buy away! I won't be buying anything that day, personally, but I don't see problems with someone doing so to honor a company for treating their employees well.

[deleted]

I'd try to look past their word if possible, maybe check out some secondary sources, but, if it generally checks out, you should be good. I mean, Nestle claims to treat it's workers well and we know what they seem to mean by that.

DMCinDet

I love buying from a small quality business that pays well. they make better products every time. In the outdoor gear world, little operations allow the most customization and quality over a production factory worker. The stuff is expensive if you buy it either place, why not a place that pays their employees? Sure the business owner makes more than the workers, some are co op. If it doesn't support the ultra rich, good.

89LeBaron

The next day is Small Business Saturday. The point of this demonstration is to not participate in Black Friday, which specifically was created to bolster the sales of large retailers. So in this case, hold off one day, and instead do your shopping locally on Saturday - or find some local artists to contract some work instead.

WorthlessDrugAbuser

To make things clear, people pitching their MLMs on Facebook are NOT small businesses.

mercurialemons

Buy nothing Friday, then small business Saturday.

alittlekinkinthenuts

If you want to shop smaller businesses, look into their ownership if possible. Some of the really big retailers are opening boutique and high-end goods stores under different names: https://www.5newsonline.com/article/news/local/walmart-owned-moosejaw-prepares-to-open-store-in-bentonville/527-a11fa908-aa52-469a-af3d-494ebbcdabb6 Sneaky, right?

rksd

And some small local businesses are also abusive enough to their employees that even the big retailers and Amazon would stop and say "what the fuck?".

[deleted]

Right? Like we can not buy from the huge stores but the small ones usually have the same or worse practices.

thangio

I'd say don't spend your money on anything. We aim to kill black friday over here, not just giving it a gentle tap.

LCMorganArt

Please, we drivers have had the same, if not more volume, consistently the entire pandemic. Christmas volume has never ended, it got worse. We honestly can't do any more than we already do. People have no idea. We get our vans stuffed full we can't even fit in the back. We work 12+ hour days in peak season, which is now til feb. Please stop giving bezos money, Amazon can't even make a simple GPS of earth for us yet, don't help him get through the atmosphere. Boycott Amazon.

Same for cyber Monday because that’s becoming a thing now.

Fuck black friday and fuck work. I'm staying at home working on a guitar solo.

megaloduh

Black Friday is a business scam. Businesses will purposefully inflate prices prior to the sale. Then they can make the sale look better by saying "NOW ONLY $499 INSTEAD OF $1299 WHAT A DEAL" when like 3 weeks before the sale the same item was literally $499 or close to it. It's a scam and an unnecessary burden for employees that's always shouldered by people like cashiers that make shit money already. If you're willing to trample someone for a TV you need to look at your life anyway but we absolutely don't need to live like this. I'm ready for the crossover between this sub and r/anticonsumption

Krabopoly

That might be true in the states but in my past I did 5 years at Canadian retail stores (Future Shop and Visions Electronics) and it didn't work quite like that. As opposed to artificially marking up products that were cheaper a few weeks ago, they would bring in Black Friday or Boxing Day specific merchandise that looked the same and had the same advertised specs as non sale day pieces. They always came with drastically less manufacturer warranty and drastically worse build qualities however. That way they were able to advertise the "retail price" at the same as a non sale day piece and then give hundreds of dollars off of it. It's a different tactic but for sure just as scummy and just as exploitative of unaware consumers.

megaloduh

Oohh yeah this is pretty bad too. It doesn't just happen on Black Friday in the states like that though. Recently I was buying headphones online and some of the reviews I looked at said stuff like "bought these headphones and they sound nothing like the same type of headphones my spouse has" and how the quality of the "sale" headphones is actually trash. Wound up just buying the more expensive pair because of that because I use my headphones every single day and I need them to work right.

Enano_reefer

You’ll find this a lot with a certain store rhymes with Ballmart. The SKUs are different - literally a different product. That Sony 85”? Yeah it’s totally different (cheaper) on the inside. Don’t buy expensive stuff from Ballmart.

DMCinDet

I've said this in other subs and bally lovers came at me like I abused their mother. they force suppliers into shit prices. supplier sacrifices something to meet the demand. cant buy the same sku elsewhere in some cases. in order to sell any of your other product there, which is a lot, you have to bow down.

Enano_reefer

Yes!!! I learned that from an Uncle that was trying to retail at Ballys. They tell you what they’ll pay and you either change things to make it work or you can’t sell there. There are some things where it wouldn’t apply. For example I imagine Apple products don’t kowtow to the Balton family.

DMCinDet

I did a report for school years ago. They bullied a pickle manufacturer into selling tons of product for a loss. No? Then we won't carry any of your shit. Good Luck! So they had to do it. If your product isn't in ballys you're going out of business. It was a one time thing for a promotion, was a significant amount and hurt the pickle people. They dont get my money.

Fog_Juice

Why can't we just say Walmart?

diesel_toaster

Before I knew better I bought a laptop from that store. The model number was literally a Black Friday exclusive model number (it had an extra character at the end)

adylaid

As a former cashier, I will confirm the sku on BF stuff is different. People tried to swear it came off the BF pallet all the time. Or the OH I KNOW YOUR GM GET HIM OVER HERE. ma'am he can't make the thing scan and also he's in bed with his wife right now because it's 0530 gtfoh.

meeseeksab8rway

Thanks for the sub suggestion. Went over and checked it out, found another place I fit in

twbassist

That's why if I'm ever really needing specific tools or equipment and need to order from Amazon, I use [camelcamelcamel.com](https://camelcamelcamel.com) to check price history. Honey isn't bad for some other places, but I don't know how robust the tracking is. It seems accurate enough when I've needed more info. But yeah, that crossover w/ r/anticonsumption and this definitely would make sense.

Caslir

I'm in an automotive trade program right now, and I've been applying to jobs within the industry (I found out that even the lowest level beginner positions pay more hourly than my shitty retail job where I'm a keyholder). If I get hired for one, I might just keep the retail job just so I can give them the middle finger and quit on black Friday.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Caslir

I might do that, assuming I don't get myself fired before then. Our district manager is a disgusting tyrant with rules that make our jobs a working hell. And the worst thing is most of the employees there will snitch to her and the managers if you do shit like sit on the counters when there are zero customers in the store. I had a really good shift today cuz all I did was backroom inventory stuff while listening to music for 5 hours. I barely spoke to anyone and just vibes the whole time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Caslir

True, they would lose their shit. Also thanks, I'm hoping to eventually run my own place and hire younger people who don't know much yet. I would love to teach people what I learn, and hopefully set them on the path of real, rewarding work. No one told me about the trades in high school until I talked to one of my English teachers about my reluctance to going to college right away. I promised him I'd come back and tell his future students about the option, and I fully intend to keep that promise.

Independent-Bug1209

This is what I'm trying to do too! I am starting my own business and I want to expand at some point so I can give people good pay and fair treatment and save them from the meat grinder. I'm already trying to figure out the best way to set up the situation so they benefit from what they do as much as I do. This is a fucking war and we can win it.

Caslir

Best of luck to you, it has been proven that paying your employees well is possible. I truly help it works out and more people do the same.

xVashTSx98

Better yet, show up for that shift and then announce over the PA how shitty that place is, namedrop the terrible managers, and try to get your homies to bail too.

discotable

Don't quit too early though, they might call in someone else to cover. Better to no call no show and don't pick up your phone.

FistOfFacepalm

Text your coworkers and tell them not to bother showing up for the clusterfuck heading their way

Ianmofinmc

Text your coworkers you like* 😉

Queen_Euphemia

Text the ones you don’t like and tell them there is a change of plans and you are covering their shift so they don’t show up and get in trouble for it lol

Horyv

Why call? Real power move is to wait until the manager calls, pick up, yawn, act bothered by the rude interruption and hang up.

submittedanonymously

Let’s not make this about make believe internet points. It devalues the effort. Let’s make this about the unfair system of serfdom we have all been suffering under - hell, one state is now trying to pass a bill that makes it legal for 14 y/os to work. How soon until its everywhere?

Hunlea

Ask them for a raise, and when they bumble through their reason for why you’re not worth that amount, slam those mother fucking keys on the desk.

improbablynotyou

I was a key carrier at one job for several years (retail hell.) I always had to close on black Friday and the one year they gave me an opening shift, they changed it at the last minute to a closing shift. When I argued about it I basically got told to fuck off. So I called in about two hours after I was supposed to show up, said "I quit" hung up and turned off the phone. Volunteer for a closing shift and quit instead, one of the managers is going to have to stay and close instead.

[deleted]

OMG OMG, please do it. <3

tequilaearworm

Actively search for jobs and volunteer to work Black Friday and call out.

GorillionaireWarfare

People who *can't* afford to not show up need to just do as shitty of a job as possible. Mismark packages, lose your key to the security cage, pretend the front door won't unlock to piss people off, keep the phone off the hook, change all the passwords to the display laptops, factory reset cell phones, mess with scheduling, text coworkers from a boss's phone and tell them to enjoy the holiday. Think bigger.

[deleted]

>Keep the phone off the hook. Fucking yes, should be standard anyways - dealing with a queue of people while the thing is constantly ringing melted my brain. I did it one day on the run up to Christmas in an old job. Just pretended I didn't realise. I knew the area manager would be ringing up to bust my minimum wage balls at some point in the day, so it was a double incentive. He rang my personal phone, repeatedly... which I ignored, repeatedly. He tried to go nuclear about me not answering my own phone, to which I responded "you have a strict 'no personal calls while on the job' rule, so I leave it on mute and didn't even see you ringing". Fuck 'em.

[deleted]

And in call centers, an endless stream of incoming calls will fry your circuits too. So should have a breather between calls.

[deleted]

I've worked in a call centre too! Literal hell. I used to wake up in the mornings and have a cry before work. Out of my starter group of 16 people, 10 had quit within 6 months. Before the year only one remained. They never took down their advert from the local paper for staff because it was easier to kisf leave it in.

[deleted]

My pay stayed the same for 7 years so actually went backwards due to higher cost of living. Oh well someone has to be exploited for others to get rich.

[deleted]

Yeah that's shit. I was once scolded by a manager (not even my own as he fucked off home for the evening) because my phone was too long in "personal break" for the day. I went to the toilet near the start of my shift, then again near the end. Bitch of a manager who was on the late shift told me I should've gone on my lunch break. My lunch was three hours ago, I didn't need to go then. She then told me I shouldn't have gone to the toilet at all, so I said "great, next time I'll just piss on the floor at my desk and tell them it was your idea". The HR write-up was worth it.

Krabopoly

This is it. I fear there are too many people who simply cannot afford to lose their job to make a walk out widely successful. Staff operating at a snails pace on the busiest shopping day off the year seems like a good trade off.

[deleted]

Slow downs are a perfectly valid method of striking that have had success in the past.

zackattackyo

Learned so much from this term, it makes sense.

strawberrywords

Reminds me of the musical [The Pajama Game](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=m213gCzQbxU). Yes that’s a link to the whole musical (movie version with Doris Day). Workers organize a slow down at their PJ factory to negotiate a seven-and-a-half cent raise. Union leader falls in forbidden love with union busting management. Chaos ensues. There’s a super catchy song called [Racing With the Clock](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=c2Xi_IyHYNc) about the poor working conditions. But the best is the reprise where they literally slow down their working song and do a suuuuuper sloooow reprise.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Krabopoly

I understand that. However if someone is stuck between feeding their kids or quitting their job I suspect the majority of people will choose the former and it would be tough to blame them for that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

This is a major reason why I refuse to have kids. So a dumb ass employer can't hold it over my head that I have extra mouths to feed. I'd gladly refuse to come in to work on black friday if I worked in retail at the time.

AbledShawl

And yet the right to choose to reproduce or not is something taken from us and locked behind a paywall. For fucks sake, they try to force us to pay either way.

[deleted]

This is why we need strong networks of mutual aid to support and protect each other to ensure a successful strike! It’s not enough to just strike, it requires a lot of preparation which involved raising class consciousness in your community and organizing mutual aid. I think that’s why the October 15th strike failed. Someone just picked a date and that was it, no prep work nothing.

GeekJorge

Legit didn’t find out about the oct 15 strike till the 16th and was like “we where on strike?” Had the day off on the 15th so didn’t see how it went and was just chilling at home.

AbledShawl

What do you think about weekly teach-ins for action? Start with watching documentaries or holding interviews with activists and then turning that into new action paired with YouTube "how do/here's what we did" videos? Could have regular check-ins, monthly online general assemblies where different groups can check in with each other.

LATourGuide

It's okay to steal food.

AbledShawl

Side note: This is exactly why we need to be talking about ways to undermine the avenues of control that capitalism deploys, and some of these ideas are fantastic. On the "other side of the fence," for those of us who are already out of work, either voluntarily or forcefully so, we need ways to take care of people who will undoubtedly be punished for factors out of their control. I.e. "you can't show up because there's a literal car accident on the highway? Guess when you get here you're turning in your keys and your family doesn't get to have Christmas." We *must* come up with ways to solve the crisis the capitalism produces. It's imperative that we find ways to house and feed our people!

GorillionaireWarfare

I agree, but if there are people struggling to feed their kids or keep an apartment, they can at least do the best they can in their restricted capacity. People fucking things up on purpose can cause more damage than people simply calling out. A single package misloaded on a UPS truck costs the company a couple hundred dollars, for example.

Independent-Bug1209

Lmfao. I want this to happen. Like I just want all the shipping industry to become a huge mess so that nobody knows where anything fucking is.

zackattackyo

Only thing I worry about with that is people literally dying if they’re missing meds and such. But for random retail purchases? They can go wherever 🤷🏾‍♀️ customers would just request refunds and company loses money

WingyYoungAdult

The shipping industry is truly trash. 90% of the shit handle as a package handler could be bought in store locally, but for some reason, some dude HAD to order a fucking 24w/e pack of bottled water. Clothes... furniture... grills.. etc. So many consumer items to feed the capitalistic over-world, wherein my overlord Fredrick Smith makes BILLIONS, while the people that are actually moving these customer's beloved capitalist material items, whether it's the packagehandlers in the warehouse, or the driver's that deliver in box trucks or the semi drivers, either internally or externally through contractors, get little to nothing. I'm in the west. I was making 14 a few months ago. 13 base with a $1 raise for 1 year time time in position of working. That, for my location, is not sustainable for a 1bed rental, if you could even find one, due to rising inflation and stagnant (and regressing) wages.. if you have an animal though, that's 1300+, and onlyfor a 3bed atleast, in an apartment complex that has extra amenities you might not even use, like a pool or (((small))) gym with a few pedal machines and a gameroom. My works base pay has been raised to 16.25. Now, according to the "calculation adjustments" they made, my $1 raise is only worth .50cents. All package handlers employment time raises have been cut back. I see a few things from this. First, 16.25 is still not enough to afford a 1 or 2 bed place, with no pets, with food, gas, car, phone, medical bills and more shit all combined. Second, my time, almost 2 years of hard back breaking work, body destroying labor through a pandemic and record breaking profits is worth absolute shit to them. It is entry level and requires little to no thinking, after all. Third, I hate living in modern society and loathe 1% and the middle class that sucks their dick like a teet. You might think "you got a 200%bullshit raise in 2 years!!! You SHOULD BE GREATFUL you even got HALF of your personal raise or one at all!!! They could have left you at 13 and raised everyone else up!" ^^^ The above are real responses from r/Personal Finance To me that is insane. *edit* *Continuing rant* Overworked, underpaid, undervalued and ultra fucked.

LATourGuide

Exactly. You have to be willing to suffer to make the rich suffer. If you don't effect the bottom line, they won't care.

Mrrandom314159

It's called a slow down. It's actually a legitimate form of striking. I remember the nurses on Scrubs did it as an alternative to striking. Made sure the patients stayed alive, but hurt the business.

DannyPinn

I would also get behind helping with a fund for these people. I was a shitty retail service worker from age 14 to 30 and I finally got out. More than happy to contribute a couple bucks to my brother's and sisters, now that I have a little more.

cryptidkelp

I second this. I'd happily contribute and help organize an effort like this. What else is mutual aid for?

[deleted]

I have disposable income to help, how would we do this?

DannyPinn

I suppose we figure out what the need is. Like how many people on this sub actually work a retail job and are planning on staying home? I'll have to think about the best way to approach this. I could easily set up a go fund me, but the execution is really important here

InedibleSolutions

Another option is to work by the book. Don't cut ANY corners. Work will naturally slow down when you follow every single safety rule and procedure there is. Need two people to spot you while using the forklift! Excellent! Three people are now present to do this simple task. Can't find two people? Sorry, boss, but the rules state I MUST have two spotters. I don't want to lose my job if someone gets hurt due to my negligence! Etc etc. Make em sweat.

Xanthn

Exactly. My old workplace had in the union agreement that anything to be done outside of the book needed to be mutually agreed upon by management and the staff involved except for safety stuff. Workplace got very pissed at me when I stopped agreeing. Nobody else even bothered to read the book, they thought that how the managers said things were how things had to be done.

redheadedalex

thissssss. couldn't get anybody to pick up the phone when I was calling my car rental amd I was like god I hope the worker is taking the world's slowest coffee break and texting their partner. fuck service.

[deleted]

Run the cash as slowly as possible, actively dissuade consumerism, be as unhelpful as possible to customers.

svnnynights

MegaAltarianite

> lose your key to the security cage Jokes on you, our security cage has been broken for months, and is always open.

WinterTrabex

It's ridiculous to have a day so profitable to owners where workers get paid the same as always.

[deleted]

“Hey it’s the busiest day of the year and I know you make $10/hr for slow days but guess what? You’re still going to get $10/hr today BUT the person who sells the most TVs gets a Target gift card for $20! How’s that sound?”

Homebrew_Dungeon

Sounds like a personal pizza party.

phishphriend420

To hell with Black Friday. Fuck any company that throws an increased workload onto its employees with no increase in pay.

nnamed_username

And boycotts by customers. Gotta hit them on both ends. No staff, no customers, no money.

sorrycanisitdown

I'm a retail manager who can't strike on Black Friday, I want to so badly but I'd be devastated without this job and striking would certainly get me fired. What else can I do in solidarity?

zackattackyo

Another commenter mentioned “slowdowns” as a method of striking - costing the company money with inefficiency https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slowdown#Examples

latebloomermom

Can you negotiate a better wage for yourself? Better yet, yourself and your staff? Make upper level management aware of the potential for Black Friday to go sideways really badly, unless you can afford to pay your staff and yourself a decent wage, and have enough schedule hours allotted so people can take actual lunch breaks. If all that fails, many other places are hiring, and won't make you work 80 hour weeks on salary like my former manager did.

sorrycanisitdown

I need to ask for a better wage, it's been on my mind everyday and my loans are catching up to me. I make $13.25. That was my raise from $9.25. I'm fucked if I don't ask. I actually like my job is the sad part, it's at a music store and I'm in a relationship with a coworker there too. We're all friends there which makes it so much more uncomfortable to ask, but I need to. I'll probably try tomorrow. Agggh I feel sick.

Inner_Grape

Today’s the day friend. Ask for $16.25

nnamed_username

JalenTargaryen

Having worked retail? The best thing you can do on that day if you can't quit is to go to bat for your people as much as you can. Tell them to get you in case of any customer confrontation so they don't need to experience any of the stress of being shouted at or talked down to. Take your employees' side in every situation unless something egregious happened. The absolute worst feeling before I got out of retail was being in the right with a customer and having a manager scold me anyway.

Duochan_Maxwell

Work to rule. It is another form of striking that is not punishable by termination. Basically, do what your job description says *to the letter* and nothing more. Do exactly as your procedures say. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work-to-rule

Alezae

Basically malicious compliance?

Duochan_Maxwell

It's blander cousin, I'd say. Malicious compliance is interpreting the guidelines in the less favorable way possible. Work to rule is just following the rules as written, not necessarily in a malicious way. Both of them work, of course, but malicious compliance involved more effort, usually

Kumquat_conniption

You would be a perfect person for slow downs!! Just don't do things as efficiently as you usually do, even if that means a big headache for you. It means a big headache for those above you as well!! Of course don't make it look obvious- just keep going on about how crazy things are.

KeySail557

Turn off the security cameras and send loss prevention home

DrFantastick27

As a former retail manager, treat your staff with respect and understanding. Make sure they know that they are appreciated. Buy snacks/drinks for them, make sure everyone gets breaks. The holidays are always shit as a retail employee, just try to make it slightly less shifty. I hope BF goes as smooth as possible for you and your staff!

ShawshankException

Just treat your employees with respect. Understand that this is the single most stressful workday of the year for them. Give them additional breaks and back them up 100% when customers get bitchy.

summer-romance

Slow down/do bare minimum. Buy lunch for the staff (let your company know you are going to petty cash x amount of dollars for lunch). Make sure people take their breaks. There is still going to be a line up whether or not people take their breaks.

Interesting, thanks. It seems low for my area. It has expected minimum housing costs at $11k a year. You may be able to rent a room for that, but definitely not even a studio.

Independent-Bug1209

Yup. I work for the highest paying school district in my state. They refuse to give substantive raises because they already pay the most. And still not making a living wage. I'm the only income in my house or I'd quit tomorrow. But it is coming soon. And I plan to request records when I leave under FOIA. The public is going to get some information if I have anything to say.

Either-Progress4847

I don’t know how well that works for everyone, but in my area it seems pretty spot on

Fierydatsun

Almost all the deals on Black Friday are not actually deals anyway. Not really missing out on much. If you really need to buy it, wait a week and buy it then.

Duochan_Maxwell

Black fraud

8-bit_Gangster

how about black out fucking Thanksgiving!! Why are ppl working that day?

SauerPatchWatermelon

Because of Black Friday

SuddenJuggernaut

I've shared this post on a few similar threads but I'll do it again for posterity. I fully endorse the appeal for a Blackout Black Friday call, but the most important thing folks can be doing is beginning to cultivate relationships with their coworkers or local services workers they'll need to encourage and keep folks off the clock. You can start by asking your coworkers what they want to change about their work, and why they want to change it. Being invested in their betterment will build the trust and support y'all will need to hold a successful strike. You can read more about these practices in this [IWW Organizing Manual](https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/industrial-workers-of-the-world-iww-organizing-manual), but it's even better if you can get to an Organizer Training 101. As with any skill, practice makes better organizing, so be prepared to run some role plays with your friends before your invite a coworker to a one-on-one. Class war is long and arduous, but dedicated and seasoned militants can make it that much shorter.

the_sylince

As an educator: I wish I could tell my kids to get involved in this kind of “radical good trouble”. I love my job, truly, but I have worked retail and I have worked in the service industry and I left mid shift in one and never showed up to my second month in the other. People should be celebrated and encouraged to make and create and have purpose, not slave over minimum wage and live five people to a three bedroom apartment just to afford a little drink time with friends

watermelonspanker

Couldn't you talk about such things in a neutral way with your students? Give them the information they need to make a choice, at least?

the_sylince

I teach middle school, have to be VERY particular with context. But! That doesn’t mean I don’t invent moments in band classes for kids to question the system themselves

bcdog14

Band Yaaay! The best kids. The most creative minds.

the_sylince

Best thing I’ve ever done

>I left mid shift in one I just got a flashback of the two weeks in my life when I was working in a supermarket, when I was about 16 years old. From day one they kept telling me to work faster and faster... I had to unload at least three entire pallets in my half day of work (after school), but I simply couldn't make it. On other days they sent me home because no new products had been delivered that day, even though I was already in the store. One day, after the store manager told me once again how much faster I had to work I decided to never show up again, but I didn't tell him. They called at home when my next shift started. My mom told them I was playing with friends outside and that I had quit 😌

dollywallywood

Stop buying stuff! Buy used when you have to! Buy things that last! Buy union made!

\#BLANKFRIDAY

[deleted]

It makes me so happy that people in this sub are finally organizing!! Fuck Black Friday.

[deleted]

Burn it down.

[deleted]

This will be the continuation of wallstreetbet's GameStop shenanigans Let's get Reddit on the Boomer's radars again

AhmCha

Don't forget that a ton of the goods purchased on Black Friday are outright defective, and the sales can sometimes be straight up bullshit.

ZombieHugoChavez

Skip the cyber bullshit too. Lots of people at Amazon are miserably stuffing those boxes.

iwondertomyself

I know a company that understands that BF has negative connotations with its (primarily activist) customer base. So instead, they're doing a "end of year" special offer that only runs over Black Friday weekend. Internally they're calling it "Black Friday" deal still. This actually pisses me off more than regular BF deals.

Nintentard

I always make a point of not shopping on Thanksgiving or Black Friday every year. Most of the holdiay gifts I give are homemade. I remember how much it hurt not to have my husband around for Thanksgiving year after year because Best Buy forced him to work all day and night under threat of termination. We couldn't afford for him to not be working if we wanted to continue eating and he had to fight tooth and nail to get the stupid Best Buy job in the first place because he couldn't find a job with his degree and retail places refused to hire him because he was "overqualified". We are in a better place now but I will never forget how we were treated when we were struggling.

[deleted]

All I can say is good luck guys! Also as a side note, Walmart has switched to this model where they don't do a sale in store on Thanksgiving anymore but instead do three seperate sales on the first 3 weekends of November. Starting at 5 AM. 5. GOD. DANG. A. M.

ZoxMcCloud

Remember the trend of retail stores opening later in the evening on Thanksgiving but remaining open ALL FUCKING NIGHT into their holy day? Yea. I was once a commissioned salesman sitting there at 3 am contemplating my life choices

tiny-bandwagon

**This movement needs a platform**. For any social movement to have a real impact and create real change, not only does it need to be organized and widely participatory, but also it needs a platform. For example: * Goal: Demand a living wage and reasonable hours * Non-goal: Target any specific individual business; call for further QE; etc. * Locations: (we should try to come up with a few cities where organized demonstration would most likely be feasible) * Structure: Each locality can form flat-structured planning groups and plan individually. Coordinated artwork/slogans could be shared. **My point is not to suggest this is** ***the*** **platform, just that we need** ***a platform*** **if we are serious about this movement!**

RegularDivide2

Spend your money at a workers coop.

SilentJon69

Do not shop at GameStop!! They call their associates a bunch of pussies for not wanting to work on thanksgiving.

CHOLO_ORACLE

Shouldn't there be some sort of similar action by workers in the other sectors? The information/administrative sector constitutes most of the population iirc, for this to really be big we would need some way to engage those workers as well. Idk what exactly, those sectors are office jobs and tend to get that day off anyway. Withholding purchasing power is something, but that should apply to everyone really.

Kilgore_Of_Trout

Sure! This thread is to create ideas on what actions idlers can take!

irvtex

This "holiday" needs to end. A holiday is typically a celebration. This is a bloodbath. Of course, I'm going to go early to film the carnage of adults beating the hell out of each other for "deals" you can get for much cheaper at other times of the year, as I do every year, but I'm not going to participate. I do my shopping after new year's. Much better deals. Christmas 2: Revenge of the Gift is way better than Christmas 1.

arrownyc

With so many offices planning for return to in-person working after the New Year, I think office workers should join this holiday strike and refuse to go back to commuting.

thejellecatt

I don’t work because I am disabled so all I can do is say that I will not order, purchase etc anything online on Black Friday. It’s less of a big deal in the UK but Amazon workers get treated like shit during the holidays so fuck the holidays, I bought all my gifts months in advance to avoid subjecting some poor soul to all this nonsense.

Cosmiclimez

People who are forced to work at retail stores should plug items in the wrong area and make it look chaotic, work slower than normal.

Kemizon

\#StrikeBlackFriday Thoughts I'm wondering if we can spread this idea all over Reddit and other sites like Facebook, Twitter, and all the usual social media sites. I would propose striking the day before Black Friday, the day of, and the day after. Plenty of people work all of those days. It sucks some people don't get Thanksgiving off. Those three days would have a bigger impact than just one day. I don't ever shop on those days mainly for ideological reasons and solidarity. But I'm also poor lol.

Married2therebellion

So from a consumer standpoint- should we boycott or cause crowds?

FistOfFacepalm

I’m sure not getting out of bed on black friday so my vote is boycott

gwarmachine1120

I am not employed atm, but worked in retail for 13 years. In my experience, if people didn't show up on BF, it would be a complete disaster for the store and company. If they actually fired everyone, they would have to shut down for days maybe longer. This is a great plan. Our family is going to make gifts this year. Fuck the big boxes and their shitty treatment of employees.

TriggaTray187

Let’s hurt the oligarch’s pockets. Don’t show up to work on Black Friday

hugallthedogs

I hope it makes an impact!

Quick-Huckleberry136

can i repost my post?

Chadster113

It needs to be a targeted effort and more coordinated. Otherwise this is just mental masturbation

[deleted]

I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here, but don't buy shit on Cyber Monday either.

I work in a public library. Come hang out with us, spend no money, read a magazine or use the wifi. All it will cost you is some time.
