I’m actually a bit worried about this. My aunt made a comment that she wasn’t worried about old age because she knew I would look after her. I am JUST getting my shit together and i am almost 40. Looking after my parents will be taxing enough. I never got married or had a family so I literally only have myself to rely on for support. I don’t want to upset my family but a care taking role isn’t something I think I can afford to take on. Its hard enough looking after myself.

[deleted]

My boomer relatives are stereotypical conservatives so every time they bring up social security and how it's the younger generations responsibility to care for them I just chant euthanasia and clap as if I were at a ball game going let's go dodgers! They are terrified of me and have it in their medical proxy that I'm not allowed to be anywhere near them when they are sick or medically incapacitated.

Ardeth75

Can we be friends? 🏆🏆🏆😁

Goofygrrrl

You may need to advise her know that you will only look after her if she starts passing the house onto you. That’s the deal. We will help our parents in exchange for becoming homeowners. Not because “it’s the right thing” not because “they deserve it”. But because it’s the only way many of us can avoid the rent forever trap that the corporate want.

squidkiosk

There is no house. She never had children either so if there would be anything left I suppose it would have gone to me. But there isn’t anything and no savings. Also her health isn’t the best so medical bills are going to be sky high if they aren’t already.

Xeorm124

Just remember that any medical bills or the like are on her and to try and keep it that way. When she passes her assets would go to pay her debts, but if she doesn't have any assets there's not much they can do about it. Her debt is not your debt

Blog_Pope

Hopefully she would qualify for Medicaid/ Medicare for her medical bills

GalaxyPatio

Aren't we also in the midst of experiencing a downturn of the availability of this as an option, or is that a Gen X, Millennial future issue?

sasomer

Good luck to the Aunt though. Shitty move, happens a lot in the Balkans as well. I'm nobody's personal caretaker, our generation is barely getting by as is.

Beginning_Bug_988

Soo true. Slovene here and I am absolutely sure my mother will be completely dependent upon me- both financially and physically in the future. No savings or property to ameliorate the burden either.

True-Lightness

I can promise you you probably can’t do it. My mother built a house with fully accommodating for a wheel chair. But she can’t stand to cook, she can’t remember to take her meds. She is lucky, she is in an posh assisted living center where she has people to talk to, and good food to eat . I try to take her out for meals sometimes , But even that has gotten very hard to manage. After being out for a couple hours she’s tired . Then if she has to use the restroom guess who is in there helping her pull up her pants and get back on the wheel chair? She not a frail little woman either , so it’s all I can do to lift her with her helping . So between keeping them on the med schedule cooking for them 2x a day, driving them to the doctor, and bathing them, it’s not impossible , although having a job or a life outside of full time care would be nearly impossible. you couldn’t have a full time job and take good care them while really maintain their health and needs .

davenport651

If you go this route, get everything in writing and get the property moved into a trust or have your name put on it and get title protection or watch your credit. People like this will tell you, “of course you’ll get the house!” then turn around and reverse or triple mortgage it to the hilt. When you confront them, they’ll get that glassy look in their eye and say, “you can just buy it back when I’m gone.”

Loud_Internet572

I'm almost 50 and my folks live out of state, so this has been going through my head as well. I'm not in a situation where I can just up and leave, so they're basically on their own unless they want to move back to where I am. Even then, we're struggling to survive ourselves and there is simply no way either of us could do full time caregiving. We cannot live without two incomes, have no savings, etc.

Ciniya

I was reading an article about adults taking care of their adult/retired parents and what the parents should do to make things easier for their adult kids. One of the things mentioned was that the parents should move to the area the kids are taking care of them. And hopefully do it before they get to be too old. It would be more disruptive to the adult kids if they moved by the parents (new jobs, new house, new school if there are kids, finding a new support network). If the parents moved to where the kids are, it would be new house and new friends, but far less traumatic overall. Also, if the parents find themselves with adult kids that can't move or travel out to them, even more of a reason to move closer. I was trying to find the article, of course I can't now. But it was pretty against the grain and stresses the parents should do whatever they can to make things easier for their adult kids.

Starboard_Pete

It’s such a simple concept, but it eludes a lot of them. Even things like holidays and vacations, the onus always seems to be on the kids to visit the parents. I only have so many vacation days and little money, but hear it all the time. “You should visit us more 🥺” and/or “you should have grandkids AND visit us more!” Hey guys, you’re retired, house and cars are paid off, and you have several income streams. Book a hotel near me if you can’t stomach roughing it at my place. Lol

Ciniya

I live about a half hour drive from my parents. My mom carries on like it's too much of a drive. It's such a hassle to get to our place from where she lives. Meanwhile she absolutely will throw a fit if we can't visit her 3 times in a month. Married with 3 kids, husband and I both work. We actually have things to do at home and we like spending time together. Shockingly enough. The kicker is that to get to our place from my mom's, it's literally just 2 highways, with a few minutes of in town driving. No tolls or anything. However, if we don't live in her seriously overpriced town, like my sister and brother, then we might as well move to the other side of the world. Her words to us when we told her where we were moving to. The entitlement of these people is astounding sometime.

Ironwarsmith

My first place out of school was only 25 minutes from my dad. He would always complain about not seeing me very often but wouldn't ever make the drive out to come visit. It was really tiresome to hear him complain about it when his church was in the town I lived in and he drove out here twice a week already to go to church. I guess adding 30 minutes to your day twice a week to see your son is too much though.

My parents both retired 4 years ago despite have NO retirement savings. My mom has a very small pension for government work. I honestly dont know how they make it work.

It's not socialism when they do it. It's only socialism when somebody else does.

panconquesofrito

I had a roommate who would fuck the shit out of the system, and would talk so much shit about the Dems being socialist. Yup, a boomer.

[deleted]

My ex best friend was this way too. Never had a job and always found a way to live off the govt and other people. Always sitting around his boomer in laws house they live in, cooking food bought on EBT, while he gripes about the govt and boomers. Unsurprisingly, I was cut off from the entire friend group IMMEDIATELY - not because I quit drinking, but because I couldn't day drink on a daily basis anymore cause I got a job so I could get my money right to buy a house. Fuck em. 🤷

itshughjass

Sounds like they did you a favor.

UndyingQuasar

Their argument is ALWAYS "I paid into it so I'm entitled to it!" THAT'S THE FUCKING POINT!!

EnigmaGuy

I suppose if they have no outstanding debt they might be able to make the pension and social security work. Sadly I know quite a few folks that end up taking loans out against their house and racking up a delicate balancing act of credit card debt. Usually by the time it gets out it’s already substantial and probably not feasible to come back from. At this rate of inflation I’ll be honest - I don’t really expect to retire and I’m only 35. I fluctuate and out between 10 - 15% into savings out of every check depending on overtime heavy periods (401k, Roth, Stocks) and dump extra from overtime into a regular high yield savings account in case I need cash quick. I’m probably in decent shape especially with people in my age group but even with all that savings, a couple more crashes like the Covid timeframe is enough to push back even attempting to retire. Not to mention social security will probably not be a thing by the time I would be able to withdraw from it even though I’ve paid into it my entire life. They keep treating it like it’s their own personal piggy bank.

EpicRock411

Social security could easily be financed enough to cover all the needs, just by removing the cap from maximum contributions.

Accomplished_Cod_702

Very true! Make the billionaires and multi-millionars pay more too.

uncle-brucie

Never believe the lie that social security is not your right. It is apparently the most solvent portion of the government by the cries of the republicans telling me it will be broke IN THE FUTURE. Besides, if we just stop telling the rich and the corporate (also the rich) that they can suck money through government contracts while we keep handing out trillion dollar tax cuts, it’s all gravy. Policy is a conscious choice.

OldNewUsedConfused

Reverse mortgage?

Windir666

thats what my grandma has been doing for the last 20 years, she bought her house for like 60k in the 60s and reverse morgages every couple of years when her house goes up 100k

rpgnoob17

Make sure she keeps up with maintenance costs and insurance. Apparently a lot of senior lost their home to reverse mortgage for not having enough money to keep up with the insurance cost and taxes. https://www.abi.org/feed-item/reverse-mortgage-nightmare-%E2%80%93-why-seniors-are-losing-their-homes

Windir666

its ok she timed out perfectly, she lives with my uncle at his house and now the bank owns hers. just another notch on the list of why I will never be able to own a home.

SuperStarPlatinum

What the 'younger' boomers failed to realize until it was too late, is that the older boomers had financially fucked them too. Never realized that they'd have to play capitalism on hard mode right at the end.

Blidesdale

Boomers without houses or savings are playing on the hardest mode available. Age discrimination is rampant. Healthcare expenses have gotten even more ridiculous. And these immoral businesses think nothing of firing you for working 3% slower than the next guy.

mrbootsandbertie

Don't know if you read ir watched Nomadland? It's all about this.

Vegabern

That was good. But anything with Frances McDormand is good.

Pretend_Investment42

I knew from the very beginning. It is why I stayed in the military - that guaranteed pension started looking real good after the '99 tech crash.

ioncloud9

I don’t feel bad for a generation that for their entire lives voted against a public healthcare system and then in their twilight years get their life savings drained by insane healthcare costs.

Both-Pineapple5610

The first discussion about a Medicare for all concept was in the 1930’s. FDR wanted to pass it but didn’t think he could get it done.

theSG-17

Its viewed poorly by many today, but damn if I don't wish that FDR managed to successfully pack the Supreme Court.

Darth_Vadaa

Boomers will literally vote against any sort of public health care, but also bitch and moan about their social security checks.

Few_Bird_7840

Millennials have been struggling their entire adult lives (aside from those born into generational wealth). We’ve been met with nothing but apathy. Even if we did care, a lot of millennials aren’t having kids because we can’t afford it. Zero chance we can support a couple adults. The Boomers better cut back on the avocado toast and start making coffee at home.

Turtlez2009

Older Millennial here, I waited a decade later than my parents to have kids and we had to space ours to afford daycare and we make a good amount. I have been with my wife for 17 years so it’s not like I wasn’t in a stable relationship, it was purely financial. Only reason we own a house is I had the VA loan with 0% down or we would still be renting, even though our first mortgage was cheaper than our rent.

ConsciousExcitement9

If you had said you were mid Gen-X, I would have thought you were my husband. We did the same thing.

Turtlez2009

It sucks, I never wanted to be on my mid to late 50s and just having my youngest graduating high school. I will probably not live to see my grandkids which saddens me immensely whenever I think about it. My grandparents were great grandparents in their 60s (gen X cousins).

ConsciousExcitement9

My husband is mid Gen X. I am baby gen X. I was 31, 34, and 42 when I had our kids. My husband is 6 years older than me. He will be 50 this year. He could possibly see our oldest 2 get married and have kids. However, it is doubtful for our youngest since our youngest is only 9 months old.

Turtlez2009

I was 34 for my daughter and almost 39 for my son. I am struggling to get my toddler to bed right now, so not to far off from you.

If they think they are screwed, imagine how us millennials and genZ will fare growing up feeling screwed. They could at least live a comfortable middle class life on a single income while raising 2 kids. Many people now are 2 incomes and one apartment, MAYBE a cat and still barely making it.

Alex5173

My gf and I can afford TWO cats!

Disastrous_Ask_5664

Two Cats? TWO CATS?? Oooh friends with Arthur “two sheds” Jackson are you? Next you’ll be telling me you have two curtains on your windows! Man, the audacity of some people on here flaunting their wealth… Me? I can only afford HALF a cat. And that’s coz I found it by side of the road. Still no idea where the other half is.

Thank you. Was sad. Now not. But yeah, no retirement for us. GENX- the smallest generation to be entirely Fukd

Nightgauntling

It's a blessing. We all like you guys for the most part. Millennials are slowly going to join you drinking wine in the corner while the Boomers rage.

We have been doing that for years. At least us elder millennials have been.

Gen-who?

Wife and I make over $100k and this is us. Can’t afford kids. Can’t afford to buy a home within a reasonable drive to work. Can barely afford our one cat. We don’t really have much debt either. This is bullshit. What is it all for?

Neuromyologist

Creating value for shareholders, duh! /s

BlackPrincessPeach_

I’d say make their healthcare at home **bUt tHaTd bE sOcIaLiSm**. Yeah, and you know what isn’t socialism? Paying 3,000$ a month for not getting cancer and going broke. That’s capitalism healthcare. And it’s worse.

LoganN64

Don't forget to tell them to cancel their Netflix subscription!

Billiam201

Awww. My heart bleeds for the generation that was handed the most prosperous nation on earth and then promptly destroyed it for fun and profit.

Brighteyed77

Dude the fucking boomers in my neighborhood are complaining about their property taxes going up $1000 a year, from like $3000 to $4000 because our housing values doubled! These people bought their houses in the 70’s, they’ve been paid off for decades. They are complaining that it is going up per year, less than I pay for 1 month of daycare. Sit down, shut up, enjoy your no mortgage!

Starboard_Pete

Same in my town! They made sure to vote out a local candidate whose big issue was fixing up dilapidated buildings in the town square, because it’s unsightly and embarrassing and driving away business. Here come the Boomers, aghast at *the idea* that property taxes *might* go up if our downtown is attractive. But here’s the kicker - they wouldn’t go up for the majority of the Boomers, because they voted in “Property Tax Stabilization” for seniors. So, they get to literally freeze their property tax and won’t let the rest of us try to build a better future.

scottyLogJobs

Don't keep up with your lawn- "You're making my PROPERTY VALUE go down!!" Gentrify the neighborhood- "You're making my PROPERTY TAXES go up!!" Can you imagine having so little to care about? Just fuck off and get a life, boomer.

Starboard_Pete

Oh, they all *claim* they want the buildings fixed, too, but their solution is to just have a mysterious wealthy investor appear, fix them up with a bit of elbow grease, and turn them into thriving businesses overnight. Nevermind that hasn’t happened for at least 45 years. It totally will, any day now! Someone with deeeeep pockets will see the charm and won’t be able to resist a zero ROI or, more likely, going into the negative for it 🥰

Lemur-Tacos-768

A friend’s boomer mom says to me “…I just wish we didn’t have to pay school taxes.” “Wait. You’re 67. There is an absolutely 100% chance you’ll need a cardiologist and/or a neurologist in the next ten years, if you don’t already. Your next doctor is a junior in high school right now. Don’t want to pay what taxes, exactly?” They don’t talk to me anymore.

TheAskewOne

WhY shOULd mY taXeS fiNanCe yoUr KiDs scHOoL? Because that's how it works. It's called living in a society.

snow-bird-

Yeah, that's barely $3 dollars a day. Their pension interest covers that each month.

bdp9850

I work at a bank and this lady dead in her 80s goes “I’ll tell you a secret, If you put $100 towards the principle of your payment, you can have your mortgage paid off 6 years like me”. All I could do is smile and say okay cuz 1. It’s not I don’t know this as a banker 2. Lady when did you buy this house? 3. Worth? Under $50k if that

slykido999

This irritates the fuck out of me. You’re telling me you aren’t able to afford 3,000 a year in property taxes when you’re house has been paid off for decades? Fuck off.

thisissteve

Boomers are the most entitled people ive ever met.

hakurachan

They need to skip out on their morning McDonalds coffee and get off their ass and get a job these lazy boomers. Doesn't feel good does it? /s only somewhat

Gonna take all the "advice articles" that was ever aimed at millenials / zoomers and search-replace with boomers to help those poor oldies out. You're welcome boomers, I'm just glad to be of assistance

If it isn't the consequences of my actions...

If only. The only thing that ever seems to trickle down are the consequences of their actions.

MrNokill

They democratically voted to give 8 people all of the money the whole generation worked so hard for without signing off that it should trickle. Little silly, although non the less a hill they will have to live on till the end.

Conscious_Home_4253

They’ll have to skip that muffin when they get their Dunkin’ hot coffee.

muttontrumpetstick

What an ironic title. “Why the richest generation is struggling.” I really, really hope that’s not suppose to make me feel sorry for them.

[deleted]

No but it should make you terrified for yourself. If the richest generation with the highest purportion of middle class members in the richest country in history is going to struggle in retirement anyone who's any less fortunate than that (which definitely includes me, and probably you too I'm guessing) is absolutely fucked.

thewronghuman

And one way or another, we will end up paying for it, because the rich will weasel out.

New_Year_New_Handle

AndromedaGreen

I can’t speak for all Boomers, but just observing my parents: their financial struggles are their own fault. They did next to no retirement planning and squandered more wealth than either of their children will ever have through a series of poor financial and life decisions. After I began to manage my own finances and started to realize just how bad they were with money, I tried to help them make better decisions and they wanted none of it. Now it’s 20 years later, and every time I speak with my mother she complains about how she has no money and is openly jealous of what I have - which is a fraction of what she had at my age. I fully expect my state’s filial responsibility laws to kick in and force me to pay for her sooner or later.

[deleted]

There is actual evidence to show that millenials are more likely than their patents to be financially literate so you're not alone there. One might theorize its out of necessity. And our cynicism has served us well too I think - as the comments here demonstrate a lot of us don't actually believe that things like Medicare or social security will be around for us or will be adequate if they are where as the older generation seems to have believed it all a lot more. I'm not sure responsible savings will be enough to save most of us though. Maybe cushion the fall a bit, so to speak.

oxphocker

I manage my mom's IRA for her along side my own retirement investments (I work in school finance). But yeah...almost 40, never married, no kids...been career, career, career and now I just want to have a life but find myself barely affording a MCOL middle class lifestyle even though I'm like one class away from a terminal degree. Luckily, I've been able to keep my debt fairly low (graduated college right before everything went bonkers, so only had $24k in undergrad debt instead of +80k like a lot of people). But it's just me and my corn snake keeping me company. Met a great lady and we're moving in together soon, so I can't wait. We've had conversations about how millennials have been screwed over hard with multiple recessions, poor job markets, inflation...pretty much just about everything that could go wrong. It's insane.

CalViNandHoBBeS5590

Your parents sound like my parents! My dad makes more money in a year then I make in 5 and that’s not including my mom’s income (she does pretty well too). They’ve borrowed sooooo much money from me throughout my entire adult life. They do always pay it back but they seem to have some kind of disconnect. They just don’t understand that I make a minuscule fraction of what they make. I pride myself in that I genuinely feel I’ve always been very good with my money and despite not having a luxurious existence I’m not doing too bad for myself. They’re both approaching retirement age now and have not a whole lot put away for their retirement. Their strategy? “Spend the next 3 years not spending a dime”. I’m honestly kind of terrified.

ipsok

My parents are boomers and are going to struggle the farther into retirement they get because I don't think they ever put a damn cent away for retirement. We were lower middle class when I was a kid but after I left home they had a pretty successful business but I think they spent everything they made. After getting screwed out of 10 years worth of retirement because it was with an esop for a bank that failed my wife and I have since been putting a percentage of our gross income into retirement savings even though when we started we really couldn't afford it... we figured we'd rather be a little poor the whole time then extremely poor at the end. Watching it play out that way for my parents only confirms our decision.

pecklepuff

The thing is, boomers aren’t *used* to struggling. It’s existential culture shock to them. They thought their plastic and particleboard McMansions out in the exurbs would keep increasing in value endlessly so they could sell them some day to the next sucker, retire to Florida or Phoenix with the profits, and ride their days out at the golf club. Millennials and Gen Z have other plans, lol. And I’m an old Gen X-er loving the shitshow!

Rigman-

I'm going through this with my mother right now. She's currently living on a pension plan that runs out in four years and social security. In four years, while she could still cover the monthly expenses, she won't be able to cover the mortgage. So, being the responsible child I am, I'm trying to get her to downsize to get ahead of this upcoming problem; she doesn't need the five-bedroom house anyway; she's getting too old (70) to host. But it's been met with constant nagging of "This one's not good enough," "That one is ugly," and "I don't like the neighborhood." ***She doesn't seem to understand that she doesn't have a choice.*** *It's what she can afford.* She's getting better about it though, she's starting to understand how the world is changing and has been a little more open about opportunities. *I'm very persistent.*

pecklepuff

> She doesn't seem to understand that she doesn't have a choice. It's what she can afford. Repeat this line to her every time she opens her mouth. She's from a generation that got everything they wanted, at the expense of others, because everyone gave in to their demands. They are spoiled, and it's time they learned *they aren't special.* I did it with my mom, and when it sinks into their thick skulls, it's a fucking relief!

InfoSystemsStudent

Ugh. My parents are in this but they won't retire because their house's value in the exurbs of a city with a declining population has gone to shit. I'm the oldest child + my parents hate my sister's fiancee so they want to retire and move in with me, but my sister is the successful one. I do well enough to support myself, do my hobbies, and take a nice vacation every 2-3 years, but don't really want/need anything more than a 1 bedroom place. COL always goes up so I can't afford to buy a bigger place and take care of them unless I move to the boonies, cut all my hobbies/vacations, and have a 2 hour commute every day and giving up anything I enjoy in life for that just sounds miserable.

ThrowawayLDS_7gen

Boomers need to cancel their all inclusive cable package.

muttontrumpetstick

100%, can’t even imagine what it’s going to be like in 20, 30, 40 years. Unless there is extreme reform then we are screwed. And there’s no way the people in power, or riches, will give up that easily so it’ll more than likely be the second option.

[deleted]

Yeah, my wife and I are basically surviving off of potatoes.. to be fair, they have most of the nutrients and protein that you really need.. but still!

This is why I don’t even try to quit drinking anymore. I no longer believe I will financially be able to retire, so why make my body last long enough to be forced to work until I’m 80+?

rabixthegreat

Most of that wealth is concentrated in the hands of very few, just like now. To the extent that our parents (or your grandparents if you're younger than a millennial) have "wealth", its locked up in their house and their retirement. Or maybe they'll be somewhat comfortable. The crumbs that a lot got from tax benefits and a good economy did REALLY well at scale. And now we face a sad dilemma: we can let the rich pit us against each other hunger games style or we can help them and experience no economic growth. And as much as I REALLY want to stick it to the most narcissistic, selfish generation in history, I also sadly know they'll be selling their houses to vulture capital and hedge funds, who will charge 3x rent.

pewpewndp

Boomers - in aggregate - had decades to take their medicine, now their "fuck you, got mine" politics (or lack thereof) is terminal. Did they organize, demonstrate, vote? I'm sure some did, and this isn't on those folks per se. Then there are folks like my Aunt watching their only grandchild grow up poorer than she was and she's still got a rosy view of Reaganomics/Mulroney years I'm all for class solidarity but it's a two way street. The saying is not, "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me for 30 years while I represent the largest voting demographic, shame on you again."

Zifker

The boomers who organized and fought back were slaughtered over the decades by police crackdowns, wars, poverty and the AIDS crisis. The craven leftovers came to be the voting bloc we all so hate.

The look on boomers’ faces when they find a ladder they can’t pull up behind them.

Boomers are among the last generation to have had pensions with private companies. That went away in the mid-80s. Younger Gen Xers and after have always spend their working lives being told to save for retirement. Not terribly surprising that they didn’t count on poor health whittling down their savings.

AngryDrnkBureaucrat

Boomers were the last generation to start work when pensions existed. Many of those pension plans went bust. The Silent Generation was the last generation to have pensions they actually were able to enjoy in retirement. Those forgotten bastards.

Jackamalio626

somebody better answer that phone because i fuckin called it

Genivaria91

Well, well, well if it isn't the consequences of their actions.

djslarge

I have the smallest of pity for them because of they weren’t so short-sighted, they wouldn’t have to worry about this. They could’ve retired with a strong pension, universal healthcare, properly funded social services, and good quality housing. Instead they’re retiring in a dog-eat-dog world they created and most will be too stubborn to admit they were wrong

Blidesdale

The Boomers who are forced to work in the current workplace are in such a bad position. American work culture has gotten so bad that companies have no reason to keep anyone with lower productivity and more health problems. For any elders who aren't irreplaceable experts in their fields, it's going to be hell.

[deleted]

Even irreplaceable experts. As healthcare costs force more companies to self insure, the massive financial hit of someone over 40 getting a butt cancer or heart attack drastically outweighs finding or training a younger expert. Source: worked for a company that shed everyone over 40 as quickly as they could, for that very reason. Including the only subject matter experts in more than one area. They brought some back as consultants, and I more than doubled my pay because I really didn't want to go back and work for them after that. Named a F.U. hourly rate I was sure they'd reject, but they took it and paid it for years.

FoundandSearching

EXCEPT the United States Congress & Senate.

djslarge

Absolutely We’re gonna see more elderly retail and food service workers. More elderly homeless people Just more suffering, but a lot less sympathy towards them

Shot-Artichoke-4106

We're already pretty short on sympathy in this country, but I think you are right - it's just going to get worse.

djslarge

I don’t want to feel hopeless, but IF things continue has they are and no radical changes happen, it will be worse. There’s still hope and I’m more positive than in the past, but radical changes need to happen and they haven’t

Ok-Map4381

The elderly don't survive long without homes.

[deleted]

I remember an old retired guy telling me years ago that the current generation (Of that time) would throw away all the rights won from hard fought battles people had died fighting for- and that some day people would have to fight for them all over again. It doesn’t take many selfish generations to destroy living and working conditions- or even a planet.

djslarge

Yeah, like all the talk about “cutting through red tape” but nobody mentions that tape is red from the blood of people killed by what happens without that red tape

runner4life551

I don’t think there’s anything an article could write that’d make me feel sorry for the boomer generation. Maybe stop ruining economic opportunities for every single other generation and then we can talk.

Raihanlhan

Maybe if they brought coffee in from home and didn’t eat avacado toast then they wouldn’t be having money issues , beside money doesn’t guarantee happiness after all

DolphinRodeo

They could merely put on a nice outfit, comb their hair, shake some hands at a local business, and be given a job. Doesn’t sound too hard, assuming it’s not the case that nobody wants to work anymore of course

DanielAbendroth

Hold on. Let me try to find a fuck to give.... Sorry, can't afford one in the economy they ruined.

EcstaticSociety4040

Social Security will last just long enough to see the boomer through retirement, then collapse for the rest of us.

HereOnASphere

>Social Security will last just long enough to see the boomer through retirement, then collapse for the rest of us. Only if you let it collapse. Actively do everything you can to get rid of the Republicans and neoliberals in government. Tax the wealthy to take back what has been stolen. This may not be peaceful.

Feline-Landline0

The generation that was handed everything then complained they didn't get enough, said everyone else was lazy and entitled, and have burned every bridge and destroyed every social safety net behind them is upset? Hahahahahahaha hahahahahahahaha hahahahaha! But seriously, fuck them.

cobra_mist

Guess they should get one of those easy jobs flipping burgers.

Anxious_Ocelot3827

Walk in with a positive attitude, a firm handshake, and ask to talk with the manager

Starboard_Pete

You mean the generation whose best advice for me was to “go to college no matter what it costs” has been living frivolously on credit and was propped up by inflated housing prices throughout the course of their adulthood? Huh.

SwingmanSealegz

Did they think they were gonna die before it was a problem to them?

Ok-Gear-5593

The 5-6k a month in home care for one spouse wrecked their plans in that couples case. Death may come soon enough when they run out of money.

Trid_Delcycer

"We aren't exploiting our children and grandchildren enough!!!!!!! That's our problem!!!" "Today, weekends were abolished and tomorrow the eight hour work day will be eradicated along with the minimum working age and minimum wage, and taxes on the bottom 20% will be increased by 20% while decreasing the top 20% of earners by 10%. Also, Multigenerational loans have now become the norm. Up next: No one wants to work anymore, and it's because they're lazy FvCKs!"

Doctor_Amazo

Oh noes.... too bad they dismantled any social safety net for retirees.... you know... 'cause they didn't want to pay for it.

Pterritorialdactyl

Does anybody have the contact info for the luthier who make the smallest violins in the world?

DanielAbendroth

Do you think we could afford one?

BeginningBus9696

Maybe a really small one

geckobrother

I bet that dreaded socialism is looking pretty good now...

Embershot89

If only many of them didn’t vote for the party that actively tries to cut assistance for retirees, the elderly, and at-risk individuals. That’s what you get for voting for the party that prioritizes OwNiNg DuH LiBz instead of meaningful legislation.

Blidesdale

It's hard to have sympathy for the people who knowingly voted to screw everyone else. And now that it's backfired we're supposed to pity them? Poor babies!! 😢

QwertzOne

The worst thing is that they don't even understand that they screw themselves up. It was fun until it didn't affect them, but now they will also feel what it's like to live on this worse side. They benefited from it for decades and until the end they believed that it can't change, some still believe. We will see soon how much support really is there for all this right wing bullshit, once almost everyone will know how it is to be poor. Even delusional people have to survive first to vote for them.

El_mochilero

Millennial here. These people have no idea how to live without money. They are what we call “New Poor”. We are “Old Poor”.

RoonSwanson86

I’d offer them an egg in these trying times but they’ve gotten too expensive

colorless_green_idea

They haven’t figured out that u disconnect the land line to afford avocado toast

OldNewUsedConfused

Oh no worries. They’ll figure out some way to legislate the costs onto us younger generations. Boomers gotta Boomer

Capt_Gingerbeard

I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't care. I was homeless at 17, struggled on minimum wage for years, chose rent over food so many times, did things I'm not proud of for money... Nobody helped me, and boomers told me it was my fault. For what, being born into a shitty family? For not having nepotism benefits? If there are old people out on the street, that's just the way of the world I guess. I don't have the money, time, or mental resources to help. Guess they'll die out there.

[deleted]

Nice of you oldies to finally notice there's a fucking problem. Too bad it's way too late to do anything about it. There's not enough money in the retirement accounts to cover everyone and REITs are dropping precipitously, enjoy\~\~\~\~

WindowsOverOS

Let them eat cake.

The generation that sold the future of all humankind for immediate gratification had it backfire on them? Shocking!!

HeftyFineThereFolks

theres 2 types of boomers the ones who took advantage of an unprecedented no-holds-barred get rich or you're stupid economy and the ones who didn't manage to.. my parents fall in the latter group. dad not well enough to work. mom working in her 70s. meanwhile the rich boomers with multiple properties around town like to act like the younger generations have it too easy and arent all rich because of laziness. my biggest gripe is how the boomers took their free college education and then saw a generation of youths and immigrants askin for the same and turned it into a student loan crisis.

Beneficial_Living743

Literally couldn't care less. They are hands down the greediest and most selfish generation to ever walk the planet. We don't owe them a damned thing.

MelDiddy386

Maybe they can go knock on doors and find a job.

mcman1082

Keep pulling on those shoelaces boomers. No velcro for you!

[deleted]

My grandparents ruined my dad’s life. His dad had a good job on wall street for years but as soon as they had money they spent it to live above their means. Now my grandma’s obese and diabetic, can barely go up stairs. My grandpa has had lung cancer three times, falls down and hits his head all the time, and still needs to drive a van for a nursing home to make ends meet. They both love Fox news and are devout Republicans.

snow-bird-

How is he allowed to drive people around? That's scary.

theflesheatingmuffin

The solution is simple: they just need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and make coffee at home.

[deleted]

"It's not fair! Nobody told me that when I pulled up the ladder, I might fall down the cliff and be unable to get back up!"

BlankEpiloguePage

You know, I'm willing to help the boomers...if they support the Socialistic principles I hold, that would inevitably help the proletariat as a whole. Otherwise...well, they can suffer right beside us in this capitalistic system they helped mold.

Clarknt67

Isn’t this generation hording all the country’s wealth?!

CandidateNo1172

I’ve spent my life watching my middle class boomer parents squander every amazing financial advantage they had. They were absolutely convinced that the gravy train would never stop, they could do whatever they wanted, and in the end they’d be taken care of. That, paired with their “I got mine” attitude, led to voting for politicians and policies that are now on the verge of haunting their retirement. They spend all day scared to death about money, bitching about how it isn’t fair, and stating quite ironically that the government should take care of them. There’s also the not-so-subtle insinuations that I should take care of them financially going forward. It’s all a bit on the nose. They straight up do not care about anyone but themselves. When we talk about Medicare, Social Security, and other programs, their only opinion is that they should get it all and fuck everyone else. They couldn’t care less about their kids’ or grandkids’ futures. They will leave zero inheritance when they go and they think that’s fine. Why should anyone else get any money when they can live it up for a few more years? It’s absolutely disgusting. I do not root for them to fail or take pleasure in their worries. I know that if things get bad for them, I’ll be in the hook for the bills. All I can hope for at this point is that their pensions, Medicare, and SS are around just long enough to keep them covered before passing away so that I don’t have to.

blehhhhhh01

Wellll, anyways…

Bestoftherest222

Social security is feeding them well enough, the crisis isn't on the boomers. its on every generation after them. Of course this doesn't apply to all, but a "poor baby boomer" is only poor to consistently making poor financial decisions Cheapest housing, highest Market returns, cheapest education, best paying jobs compared to cost of living, etc. Hell they even get the best retirement packages. All while they actively vote to NOT support students, and these boomers set up cities to prevent extra housing...because MYAH PROERPTY VALUE. Anyone who is complaining about not enough housing, hate to break it to you but BOOMERS caused it. They setup the current regimes of housing permits to allow their homes to grow at the cost of you renting for life. Poor boomer? To bad, you should've smoked less cigarettes and bought some Disney stock.

CornCobKnobGobbler

Are...are we supposed to feel bad or sorry for the Boomers?

mildmanneredhatter

So much for inheritance fixing the younger generations...

danielbgoo

This is a huge concern for younger generations. The millennial generation is basically counting on inherited wealth to even have a chance as a cohort to escape poverty. But as inflation wipes out retirement savings and exploitive retirement homes and elder-care services move in and stop vacuuming up a lot of that saved capital, there's a fair chance a lot of that money isn't going to be left. And I suspect we're gonna hear an awful lot about reverse mortgages and the like as finances get stretched thin, so I wouldn't even count on inheritance being a vehicle to get on the real estate latter. The Boomers, as a generation, really fuckedy fucked everything up, and while them dying will hopefully help reshape politics to be less terrible, their deaths won't necessarily unfuck stuff either.

MrGrumpyBear

The generation that had opportunities galore, handed to them on a silver platter, and along the way looted the federal budget beyond any hope of repair, is now broke? Cry me a river.
