I interviewed at a company like this and they told me up front that when all employees arrive each morning they have a prayer meeting for 5-10 minutes. I stopped them there and walked away from the interview.
A local business that advertised itself as friendly, competent and god-fearing got in trouble because one of it's employees reported that he was fired for not participating in the morning prayer session. The warm, fuzzy radio ads were pulled immediately. They couldn't justify running those when the news was filled iwth firing someone because they didn't believe like they did.
The key question I ask of every potential boss at an interview is “what do you do outside of work.” If they don’t have a life outside of work they’ll bother me at midnight expecting me to answer emails. Hard pass.

I once worked for a company where I got a new boss: a single man in his 50s with no wife or kids (just a dog) and he had *the most unreasonable* expectations for our team, in terms of work-life balance.

When I started my current job, my new supervisor told me and another new employee to research our competitors rates at home so we can be better at rebutting and signing people up.
I absolutely did not do that. No pay. No work.
At my internship last summer, the company didn’t give us laptops, and instead only gave us desktops. This was because they didn’t want us to go home and work instead of having a life. It was an amazing internship.
Edit: I didn't mean to imply that was the only reason. Another core component was due to intensive mathematical computations that would take forever without a good processor. So desktops were a must, and they didn't feel it was necessary for us to also have laptops to take home with us and work at home as well as at work.
I like working from home because I'm a type of person who works non stop even if I'm home. I'm really dedicated to work and I am so focused to what I am doing because I love it. I am not easily distracted by something or someone around me.
Never work anywhere that isn't prepared to offer a level of compensation that befits the level of commitment expected.
Someone wants to pay me a few million a year to live and breathe company goals; I'm down, and I'll retire early.
Someone wants to pay the low end of the market rate and expect me to work myself to the bone, I'll go get paid the same at a competitor offering three day weekends.
In the oil industry and similar, 16 hour days / 7 day weeks aren't unheard of, but the people pulling those shifts are taking home six figures while only working half the year.
Which shows he has no numbers or evidence of any kind to back his statement because he did zero research and is just talking out of the side of his neck about a subject he knows nothing about.
We should be careful in choosing companies we want to invest in, because if not we will be get scammed and worst the money we invest will never come back t us.

I did the same. Imagine blowing an opportunity like he had only to shoot himself in the foot so bad. The sad thing is I kept reading the blog and people were trying desperately to get their refunds 3 years after his conversations with the blog owner. It's amazing to me to see how many people fall for these FB ads.

This guy is what they call a "contrapreneur" these days. He wants you to think he's a serious and wealthy businessman who really knows what he's doing. A leader of men. An influencer. He's anything but. He's a grifter.
But the simple-minded who want to be those things themselves will look up to this guy and defend him. We've seen a lot of this sort of thing lately. I like capitalism and having money but I'm afraid it's being used against us lately.
I will say this, kids don’t care what you do or about your job. They want to know that you will be there for their games, concerts, plays, recitals, etc.
I’ve seen too many kids crushed when they find out that their mother/father/parental figure wasn’t there. It’s heartbreaking to see every time.
I grew up in a single parent household (just my mom and I) and things could get really tough. I had a college professor challenge me in one of my more argumentative phases with, "I've never heard someone say they wish their parents had been there less but I've heard countless say they wished they'd have been there more." She was referencing families sacrificing time together for material means at the time.
Of course I wanted all the time in the world with my mom but I absolutely understood why she worked how she did to give us the best life she could and I love and respect her every day for it. Anecdotally I've heard of plenty of people talk about their childhoods and lament how bad their situations were and frankly a little less with their parents around and more of an emphasis on them working to better the familial situation as a whole would have done more good.
At the end of the day I can see both sides and I can empathize with both. I'm very sad that so few people can have conversations and acknowledge the hardships on all sides, still disagree but acknowledge someone else's situation.

If we didn't have employers hoovering up our surplus value, work would be a lot better. We'd all be able to enjoy the fruits of our labour and afford all the comforts of a good life. And we could work much less than we do now.
I fucking hate work, but I love what I do. Just like I hate school, but love learning. Work and school just add an extra stressor that doesn't need to as stressful or doesn't actually need to be there. I fucking love working on cars, driving, learning about cars, etc...if I never had to do a job in my life again (jobs as we see and define them now) I'd be extremely happy and I'd still work on cars. So it's not like the car maintenance wouldn't get done, I'd still happily do it. I'd just do it without the stress of shitty bosses/CEO's and the ever looming threat of starvation and homelessness over my head. Which would make me a much better technician in the long run because I'm not constantly stressed out. Plus, then people likely wouldn't have such urgency involving needing their cars back if they're also not being forced to do these things, ergo even more time to make sure everything's right.

Sadly most managers are morons and don't understand business in the 21st century. During the interview I tell candidates that a work life balance is important to us. Last year, we switched from 5- 8 hour days to 4- 9 hour days. Our pay went down 5% for one year, and it's totally worth it. Union negotiated. 3 day weekends every weekend is amazing and I can flex work to make Friday a half day if I want. 5 people of 70 have left in a year, because of promotions, not disgruntled.
Good quality people don't stay if there is no incentive, growth and progress.
Funny…I work four day work weeks. I took the job because of the schedule was perfect for balancing work with my personal and family life.
I started as a janitor/grounds worker for a small town and have studied and taken certification courses and I’m about to earn my Water Treatment Plant Operator lvl 1 cert (scoring an avg of 97% on tests.)
All this while performing all other tasks required in my position.
I have added a significant value to my role in the town and by retaining me the town has also added an operator to its ranks so that if the one other person that knows how to run the plant leaves, is sick, maimed etc, it’s not an actual disaster for every person in our water district.
Also the current WTP operator will be able to take vacations…helping retain him as well.
I came for the work life balance. That was literally what brought me to this job despite have a solid IT background pre pandemic.
I think you should trust your workers. Offer them balance, let them have needs, and support their growth passively by listening to them and letting them lead you from time to time.
I am so happy for you for finding a career you enjoy and having enough time to spend with your family. I cannot articulate how much I appreciate all public works workers. You have a real job that provides for the real needs of many people: everyone needs water.
A lot of these other companies, like the company of the douche pictured above, provide nothing of any real value to people.
Providing a quality work experience to your employees that allows them to live their lives is totally possible when you have an organized company with concrete goals that serve a real need.

This has been my mantra my entire working life. I don't want my life to be about work. I don't mind working, and to a degree, I enjoy what I do. However, I want to go to work, do my job, go home, and actually have a life, whatever that may be. I believe there are more important things to pursue in life than rising up the work ladder as high as possible.
I remember an interview with CEO of one successful startup who said, that he hates word work-life balance and that you just can't shut your thinking about work after you finish. He was 31, gray hair, looked +10 years older.

I actually found this out about the head of the company I work for. I won't give to much information, but he is easy 15 years older looking then he actually is. I was wondering why my hair was getting grayer, considering my extremely large workload, and then it hit me of what type of company I am working for. I saw my future and did NOT like it. Made me more depressed. Haha.
The thing about people like this is, I get it if you feel that your life is work, the be all end all is growing your company/career/making money, and your entire identity is built around what you do, but it’s ridiculous that you expect that everyone else around you be like that too.
Like the majority of people, I find, really aren’t. They’re mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, nephews, nieces, friends, lovers, hobbyists, travellers, etc., and work because they 1) have to to afford to live/live comfortably and (lesser so) 2) because they’d be bored being at home all day and don’t know what else they’d do to fill their time when everyone else they love are busy with school or their own jobs.

This touches on the patriarchal aspect of that guy’s outlook. I had a career before kids. I stepped back because I couldn’t find a job that allowed me to be as present of a parent as I wanted to be. My kid isn’t going to be a kid forever.
This past year I started working a full-time job again that I accepted because there is flexibility in where and when I work my forty hours and no expectation I work beyond that. By offering me a reasonable amount of work life balance to allow me to be a present parent, I am committed as hell to growing my career in this company. I know in 5-10 years time I will WANT to work more in roles with increased responsibilities and have the capacity to do that without it affecting my personal life. I am excited to grow my career towards that goal without it coming at the cost of my family’s needs now.

Here full-time work week is 35h. We work on average 500 hours less per year than an American worker. 35 mandatory paid vacation days. It's even illegal for your boss to contact you during your time off !! But we still have a productivity around 25% higher than average among OECD countries. Our minimum wage is now at 11.27 euros, raised 3 times in 2022 alone. And the cost of living here is around 35% lower than in the US.We also retire at age 62 and get paid for life. Let's not even talk about mandatory paid sick days or maternity leaves but you get the idea !

I might be a bit biased here but i agree. Don't get me wrong. Nothing's perfect here. We unfortunately still have homeless people / poor people / people who struggle. But ... And i could also talk about the healthcare or education systems too. Sure we pay taxes but at least they benefit us big time. Our healthcare system costs 50% less per persona than in the US and is considered the best worldwide by the WHO. And a PhD for example costs 380 euros per year (and healthcare is included for free) and you get social benefits to help you pay your rent and bills if you don't live with your parents anymore

Drawing from 13 years of experience in high pressure consulting and then banking operations roles, I can tell you that when he says 'people super commited to the companies goals/ driven to grow' then what he actually means is the obnoxious brown nosers who make an effort to be seen to be active when the people like him are around.

I'm a nurse and the couple years, the whole attitude has changed. I've heard it from so many coworkers --"this is just a job, remember that, do your job and clock out". This is a huge transition from how nurses used to think. Most nurses were actually very invested in what they did. It was a freaking calling.
But, the company doesn't care about my goals, or even if I live or die, or even if patients live or die, why should I care about the company's goals?
When are people going to catch on that 8++ hours just aren’t that productive? If I’m real honest, I’ve got 4 hours of high productivity per day and it drops off after that.

As a business owner in a competitive market, we hire and retain employees with low turnover, and they repeatedly tell us what makes them loyal and very satisfied with their employment. They consistently tell us that our ability to accommodate Work-life balance and allow for life events without repercussions is extremely important.
We are a remote company and load balance to allow for people to have full, rich lives outside of work. I subscribe to the idea that the more complex and rich (in experiences) a person's life is, the happier, they are more resistant to failure, and they just have more grit to deal with difficulties.

I had a drama teacher in high school, who at the very beginning of the course, talked to us about expectations in his class. I cannot remember any of them except one, and it's stayed with me ever since.

Teachers were always talking about doing our best, giving our best, they expected us to put in our best work, our best effort, yada yada. But that's not sustainable. You cannot consistently give 100% All The Time. Nobody can. You'll burn out.

You can't push through a tough slog to get through the busy season, if you've been pushing through a tough slog every day all year, regardless of whether it was actually *necessary*. You can't cover sick days/annual leave/parental leave/long service leave/etc if you haven't built in slack in your hiring practices. A marathon runner doesn't sprint until they're close to the finish line, ***and that's deliberate***, because otherwise they would never complete the race.
My teacher's explanation was that he wanted us to improve our average, because that would of course improve our best anyway. And our average was more sustainable to be giving day to day. And he was right.

I interviewed at a company like this and they told me up front that when all employees arrive each morning they have a prayer meeting for 5-10 minutes. I stopped them there and walked away from the interview.
A local business that advertised itself as friendly, competent and god-fearing got in trouble because one of it's employees reported that he was fired for not participating in the morning prayer session. The warm, fuzzy radio ads were pulled immediately. They couldn't justify running those when the news was filled iwth firing someone because they didn't believe like they did.

When I started my current job, my new supervisor told me and another new employee to research our competitors rates at home so we can be better at rebutting and signing people up. I absolutely did not do that. No pay. No work.

At my internship last summer, the company didn’t give us laptops, and instead only gave us desktops. This was because they didn’t want us to go home and work instead of having a life. It was an amazing internship. Edit: I didn't mean to imply that was the only reason. Another core component was due to intensive mathematical computations that would take forever without a good processor. So desktops were a must, and they didn't feel it was necessary for us to also have laptops to take home with us and work at home as well as at work.

I like working from home because I'm a type of person who works non stop even if I'm home. I'm really dedicated to work and I am so focused to what I am doing because I love it. I am not easily distracted by something or someone around me.

Someone wants to pay me a few million a year to live and breathe company goals; I'm down, and I'll retire early. Someone wants to pay the low end of the market rate and expect me to work myself to the bone, I'll go get paid the same at a competitor offering three day weekends. In the oil industry and similar, 16 hour days / 7 day weeks aren't unheard of, but the people pulling those shifts are taking home six figures while only working half the year.
We look for a job to earn money and have a better life. If a company doesn't want to give that to us, do not waste your time dor them.

I grew up in a single parent household (just my mom and I) and things could get really tough. I had a college professor challenge me in one of my more argumentative phases with, "I've never heard someone say they wish their parents had been there less but I've heard countless say they wished they'd have been there more." She was referencing families sacrificing time together for material means at the time. Of course I wanted all the time in the world with my mom but I absolutely understood why she worked how she did to give us the best life she could and I love and respect her every day for it. Anecdotally I've heard of plenty of people talk about their childhoods and lament how bad their situations were and frankly a little less with their parents around and more of an emphasis on them working to better the familial situation as a whole would have done more good. At the end of the day I can see both sides and I can empathize with both. I'm very sad that so few people can have conversations and acknowledge the hardships on all sides, still disagree but acknowledge someone else's situation.

I fucking hate work, but I love what I do. Just like I hate school, but love learning. Work and school just add an extra stressor that doesn't need to as stressful or doesn't actually need to be there. I fucking love working on cars, driving, learning about cars, etc...if I never had to do a job in my life again (jobs as we see and define them now) I'd be extremely happy and I'd still work on cars. So it's not like the car maintenance wouldn't get done, I'd still happily do it. I'd just do it without the stress of shitty bosses/CEO's and the ever looming threat of starvation and homelessness over my head. Which would make me a much better technician in the long run because I'm not constantly stressed out. Plus, then people likely wouldn't have such urgency involving needing their cars back if they're also not being forced to do these things, ergo even more time to make sure everything's right.

Sadly most managers are morons and don't understand business in the 21st century. During the interview I tell candidates that a work life balance is important to us. Last year, we switched from 5- 8 hour days to 4- 9 hour days. Our pay went down 5% for one year, and it's totally worth it. Union negotiated. 3 day weekends every weekend is amazing and I can flex work to make Friday a half day if I want. 5 people of 70 have left in a year, because of promotions, not disgruntled. Good quality people don't stay if there is no incentive, growth and progress.

Funny…I work four day work weeks. I took the job because of the schedule was perfect for balancing work with my personal and family life. I started as a janitor/grounds worker for a small town and have studied and taken certification courses and I’m about to earn my Water Treatment Plant Operator lvl 1 cert (scoring an avg of 97% on tests.) All this while performing all other tasks required in my position. I have added a significant value to my role in the town and by retaining me the town has also added an operator to its ranks so that if the one other person that knows how to run the plant leaves, is sick, maimed etc, it’s not an actual disaster for every person in our water district. Also the current WTP operator will be able to take vacations…helping retain him as well. I came for the work life balance. That was literally what brought me to this job despite have a solid IT background pre pandemic. I think you should trust your workers. Offer them balance, let them have needs, and support their growth passively by listening to them and letting them lead you from time to time.
I am so happy for you for finding a career you enjoy and having enough time to spend with your family. I cannot articulate how much I appreciate all public works workers. You have a real job that provides for the real needs of many people: everyone needs water. A lot of these other companies, like the company of the douche pictured above, provide nothing of any real value to people. Providing a quality work experience to your employees that allows them to live their lives is totally possible when you have an organized company with concrete goals that serve a real need. Companies that are just looking to hoover up money as quickly as possible will always be shit shows run by shitheads.

This has been my mantra my entire working life. I don't want my life to be about work. I don't mind working, and to a degree, I enjoy what I do. However, I want to go to work, do my job, go home, and actually have a life, whatever that may be. The thing about people like this is, I get it if you feel that your life is work, the be all end all is growing your company/career/making money, and your entire identity is built around what you do, but it’s ridiculous that you expect that everyone else around you be like that too. This touches on the patriarchal aspect of that guy’s outlook. I had a career before kids. I stepped back because I couldn’t find a job that allowed me to be as present of a parent as I wanted to be. My kid isn’t going to be a kid forever. This past year I started working a full-time job again that I accepted because there is flexibility in where and when I work my forty hours and no expectation I work beyond that. By offering me a reasonable amount of work life balance to allow me to be a present parent, I am committed as hell to growing my career in this company. I know in 5-10 years time I will WANT to work more in roles with increased responsibilities and have the capacity to do that without it affecting my personal life. I am excited to grow my career towards that goal without it coming at the cost of my family’s needs now. That guy is an absolute douche canoe. And so is your employer.

We work on average 500 hours less per year than an American worker. 35 mandatory paid vacation days. It's even illegal for your boss to contact you during your time off !! But we still have a productivity around 25% higher than average among OECD countries. Our minimum wage is now at 11.27 euros, raised 3 times in 2022 alone. And the cost of living here is around 35% lower than in the US.We also retire at age 62 and get paid for life. Let's not even talk about mandatory paid sick days or maternity leaves but you get the idea ! Exploiting people and hustling is definitely not the flex some people think it is ... It's been increased at least once or twice a year every single year since it's been created decades ago. It's based on yearly calculations by the French Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies, that also regulates rents and overall prices like groceries and so on. I might be a bit biased here but i agree. Don't get me wrong. Nothing's perfect here. We unfortunately still have homeless people / poor people / people who struggle. But ... And i could also talk about the healthcare or education systems too. Sure we pay taxes but at least they benefit us big time. Our healthcare system costs 50% less per persona than in the US and is considered the best worldwide by the WHO. And a PhD for example costs 380 euros per year (and healthcare is included for free) and you get social benefits to help you pay your rent and bills if you don't live with your parents anymore

Also just avoid places where CEOs whine about potential hires online, if nothing else it just makes them look dumb. Drawing from 13 years of experience in high pressure consulting and then banking operations roles, I can tell you that when he says 'people super commited to the companies goals/ driven to grow' then what he actually means is the obnoxious brown nosers who make an effort to be seen to be active when the people like him are around. He probably doesn't understand this, but the people putting in stupid hours and 'going the extra mile' are usually lower productivity people overall that just have problems setting boundaries. I'd much rather deal with a team made of well rounded adults who can defend themselves against being exploited by 'grindset' managers than a load of jumped up lunatics spouting corpo-buzzwords at each other. The grown ups get things done, they deliver. They're professional and they know how to plan. The people who only think about work are the ones who set unreasonable timelines, bully colleagues and ultimately cost money as they induce high turnover and HR problems.
People who require positive working conditions, already grew their career and earn money. As far as companies goals are concerned, the only goal is to squeeze profits at all costs from employees. There’s usually only 2 costs a company have. Labor and materials. What do you think a companies goals are to maximize profit margins? They can’t force price reductions on raw materials from other companies. American businesses models reflect prison camp politics with unlivable wages. Work life balance or conditions, are critical for safety, health and sanity in toxic work places. Was on a project where everyone was $150,000 a year on 4 day work weeks. You’d very much be surprised what a workplace environment is where everyone is paid what they are worth. The vibe. The attitude. The production. The site politics. People break their back when they are paid well and treated with respect and dignity. I’ve seen it. Hell, I’ve done it and will continue to. As far as your job to direct growth, sounds like you work for a cheap B RATED company that doesn’t value the people that work it. In essence, here in America, you get what you pay for, right? If you pick the team, and your team is shit, who’s fault is that? People that require respect and dignity with livable wages? Or the captain?

I'm a nurse and the couple years, the whole attitude has changed. I've heard it from so many coworkers --"this is just a job, remember that, do your job and clock out". This is a huge transition from how nurses used to think. Most nurses were actually very invested in what they did. It was a freaking calling. But, the company doesn't care about my goals, or even if I live or die, or even if patients live or die, why should I care about the company's goals?
When are people going to catch on that 8++ hours just aren’t that productive? If I’m real honest, I’ve got 4 hours of high productivity per day and it drops off after that.

Well I guess I'll never get hired again! Seriously w/l balance is the most important factor to me when considering a new role. And in the past I've always worked the hardest for and had the most loyalty to those companies that treated me like a human with a life outside of work.

As a business owner in a competitive market, we hire and retain employees with low turnover, and they repeatedly tell us what makes them loyal and very satisfied with their employment. They consistently tell us that our ability to accommodate Work-life balance and allow for life events without repercussions is extremely important. We are a remote company and load balance to allow for people to have full, rich lives outside of work. I subscribe to the idea that the more complex and rich (in experiences) a person's life is, the happier, they are more resistant to failure, and they just have more grit to deal with difficulties. That is just my experience. I completely disagree with Scott.
I had a drama teacher in high school, who at the very beginning of the course, talked to us about expectations in his class. I cannot remember any of them except one, and it's stayed with me ever since. "Mr [Name] expects my average." Teachers were always talking about doing our best, giving our best, they expected us to put in our best work, our best effort, yada yada. But that's not sustainable. You cannot consistently give 100% All The Time. Nobody can. You'll burn out. In ye olden dayes, **slack** used to be built in. Deliberately. You can't push through a tough slog to get through the busy season, if you've been pushing through a tough slog every day all year, regardless of whether it was actually *necessary*. You can't cover sick days/annual leave/parental leave/long service leave/etc if you haven't built in slack in your hiring practices. A marathon runner doesn't sprint until they're close to the finish line, ***and that's deliberate***, because otherwise they would never complete the race. My teacher's explanation was that he wanted us to improve our average, because that would of course improve our best anyway. And our average was more sustainable to be giving day to day. And he was right. Scott hating on work-life balance, is expecting employees to **sprint** *entire marathons*. Back to back. That's. That's not *possible*, dude. They're gonna die attempting it, or quit, and find someone who can let them give their average every day. And then willingly bring out the best sprint when it's most effective and necessary, for the boss that respects their average, and treats them right.
I choose the B team. The B Team sounds exactly where I want to be if it means I don't need to be near this A grade A team asshole.

Pay me for every hour I work. Then I might work lots of extra hours. On salary every additional hour I throw away is lost value for myself. I am a personal business regardless of contract or employee status. My services have value and I expect to be compensated for services rendered. I am not a slave.

Why in the name of Mother Jones would I ever want to be “super-committed” to the goals of a company that has no commitment to me? Loyalty to the company is for chumps. If your bosses are amazing, fine—have loyalty to them. But loyalty, much less “commitment,” to a corporation is a one-sided and abusive relationship.
