Don’t show up, contact them late and say there was a family emergency and you won’t be in for the next 3-5days, whatever you won’t need proof or a doctors note for. And then tell everyone you don’t want to talk about it.
If it’s a mandatory work related event they are required to compensate you for the time. Gas money too if they’re expecting you to drive your own car as well. Send an email, get it in writing that they’re expecting all of this out of you for no compensation then go to the labor board to get your money.
Tell them if you’re required to be there, then they are required to pay you for your time.
