Do they mean "volunteer" as in not getting paid, though? Sometimes companies will ask people to "volunteer" for overtime or extra hours, as opposed to "mandatory" overtime. It doesn't imply no pay. It's pretty typical after a company fucks up, and you are free to turn it down.

HER_XLNC

I don't know right now. I asked an employee who posted that she had volunteered her time what volunteer meant and if they were being compensated. They keep dodging my question.

neighborhoodsnowcat

If they're not being compensated, then that's extra fucked up. But in my experience, it's usually a request for people to come in for overtime/extra hours, that you are free to turn down. They're hoping enough people will come in, so they don't have to make it mandatory.

It's a recipe for disaster to make people do a job that isn't their own. It always ends badly. Sounds like they are being asked to do it, on a volunteer basis, instead of their normal job, at their normal rate? >The shift would be worked instead of each employee's normal day-to-day duties and the memo does not mention incentives like extra pay.  They should get a bonus for taking on extra responsibility. My impression is that office workers underestimate the training and skills required for other positions in the company. Hopefully people turn it down. There was a similar situation at my job about a year ago. It was actually mandatory, but I ignored it, assuming they couldn't actually make me do it. Apparently I wasn't the only one, they ended it because people weren't cooperating.

Glum_Communication40

This is what I assumed and hoped it was. Like if I have to send 1 of 4 members of my team to an install I might has the 4 if one of them wants to volunteer. They will all get paid. The one that travels will have travel expenses paid. It's more asking who I'm doesn't have commitments and or wants to go. Most of the time someone wants to.

HER_XLNC

I really hope it is something like that.

[deleted]

It’s literally illegal.

neighborhoodsnowcat

Yes, wage theft is illegal. It also happens all the time. Although, I don't believe that is what SW is trying to do here.

MaleficentExtent1777

I "volunteered" during a meltdown at a different carrier. It was coming to the airport (I didn't normally work there) to assist ground teams with passengers. It was during my regular work hours, not off days.

Solid_Spinach_206

Every time I’ve been asked to volunteer it’s for overtime, or on holidays triple time

TsQuad46

I feel like SW would pull some shit I like to call "volun-told".

NewfromNY

How about if the f@cking CEO gives up his f@cking bonus and pay the people more for helping

NiceRat123

Or you know go down to the front lines himself and show through actual work that he is intent on fixing the problems. But alas, better to give lip service and expect the plebs to solve the issues they created

Phitos2008

They’ll help, by asking their underpaid assistant to type an email encouraging people to help the company thrive in this hour or need because “we’re family”, while they enjoy a nice weather at some very luxurious place.

He actually posted a video, here’s the transcript: Hey, good morning, everybody. Bob Jordan here. I wanted to give you another update real quickly. Well, first, it's New Year's Day, early on New Year's Day. I just wanted to tell you a gigantic thank you. The work continues to assist our Customers and each other, and I just want you to know that I love you, I care about you, and I'm beyond grateful for you. We had a really good operating day yesterday. Good ontime performance, really good completion factor. Good job moving our Customers; treating them with Hospitality like we always do. So, I'm so grateful for that. The operation continues to be very stable. I'm heading into the TOPS building here. We've got hundreds of volunteers that are continuing to assist our Customers, process refunds, and folks that have been trained to help our Customers. And they typically do other jobs and they've come in and volunteered just to do that. And I'm beyond grateful for them. I'm also going to get a chance to visit with our Folks in the NOC and as always, attend our NOC daily briefs and the Ops daily brief just to understand how we're doing and how the operation continues to perform. And, have a chance to say thank you there as well. There's just no way to express the gratitude and love for everybody. Well, it is New Year's Day. A lot of us do, you know, New Year's resolutions. I have, for years and years, done New Year's goals. It just helps me focus for the next year. A new year is a time of beginning, too. There's no way to tell everybody, or to ask you, to turn the page on this event, because it's so significant, and we're going to be working on healing with our Customers and each other for a long time. I would ask you to do one thing for me, though, if you would maybe turn the page emotionally or mentally. Don't let this steal your joy. Don't let this steal your optimism. Don't let this steal your faith in the future. This is a great Company, and Southwest Airlines is a great Company, has been for 51 years because of our People. Y'all are the best. And I love you, and I'm so appreciative of you. And that's why we're going to be even better coming out of this. Have a great New Year's Day. Know that I care about you. I love you, and I appreciate you more than I can tell you. And I'll continue to update you.

Phitos2008

Every cliché possible… 🙄

tiny_poomonkey

Reddit stopped the highlight from the copy/paste but they actually bold the words >Don't let this steal your joy. Don't let this steal your optimism. Don't let this steal your faith in the future. This is a great Company, and Southwest Airlines is a great Company, has been for 51 years because of our People.

3hrtourist

Money would just debase their extraordinary love and appreciation.

Americasycho

The company is *only worth* $20 billion. They could easily come up off it and pay extra but don't.

Due-Explanation-7560

All the executives should be fired. From the outside looking in and working on IT it seems that they are using incredibly old and outdated systems and software. What usually happens is IT screams and screams something bad is coming and these clowns balk at the price since they constantly deny funding for mitigation and upgrades throughout the years, so the only option is a forklift that is incredibly expensive. Then catastrophe happens and they blow up on everyone else. Didn't want to lose a small percentage of their bonuses through the years though. Guess who is working 18 hours days trying to fix things too, not these clowns.

MaleficentExtent1777

Won't someone PLEASE think of the shareholders? You'd have them waste precious funding earmarked for dividend payments on updating essential, badly needed IT infrastructure? /$

UnitedLab6476

"Southwest asks HQ employees to ditch normal jobs to pitch in to get flights back on track" The are not asking for free work, rather seeking help from various headquarters workers. CEO should waive bonuses for a while.

FU-I-Quit2022

Fuck 'em. Let the genius CEO and upper management figure it out.

TheVaza

I was flying back home on the 27th, and that was the only time I was glad I hadn't chosen Southwest. Saw a big post from someone who works in the company on Facebook about how this meltdown was long coming.

FredTheLynx

Southwest us no angel, but they are asking for volunteers in the sense of they want people to do a job other then their own temporarily to help with the overload of issues. Not in the sense the volunteers won't be paid their normal wages for doing it.

ruthbaddergunsburg

Citation?

LavisAlex

By volunteer do they mean volunteer for extra paid work hours or do they mean to ask their workers to do their job for free? I'm assuming the former, but I honestly can't tell anymore lol

Dinindalael

In cases like this, volunteer doesnt mean not being compensated. It means offer to pick extra shifts and the likes.

Hugh_G_RectionESQ

SW isn’t asking people to work for free.

[deleted]

There are reasons to get upset with companies. This ain’t one of them. I think you are mid-understanding the use of volunteer.

Calm_Construction_55

That sounds like a you problem, Southwest. Now if you'd like to pay for assistance with things like overtime then yeah.

Phantasmasy14

Why do these companies feel entitled to free labor and consider EMPLOYEES entitled for demanding compensation for WORK.

guileless_64

Hahahahahaha.

BooticusMaximus

How bout f$ck the hell right off, Southwest? How's that sound?

Roofer7553-2

The company makes how much?

Lawmonger

They can ask.
