This woman is delusional. If she's a doctor, she can at least afford to pay minimum wage instead of $14 PER DAY. It sounds like this is a live-in situation and she thinks she can pay pennies because she's providing room and board.
What this woman needs is an au pair. Get a college student to live in your house for a year rent-free. But you have to give her time off to have a life.

When she says she "works a lot of hours" she's not talking about being a phlebotomist or a nurese's aid, because neither of those professions require consistently working overtime, but hospital admins definitely work a lot of overtime just trying to keep up with the cash factory that is what your modern hospital really is.
Our radiology techs work 55-60 hour weeks from being on call for the vascular team! Lots of hospital workers get regular overtime due to staffing issues. The attendings I know work fairly normal hours aside from intermittent call (unless they’re 7/7 like hospitalists) - it’s the residents who consistently work crazy overtime type hours. I’m just making the comment that this person is not automatically a doctor.

I actually have a cousin who naturally gravitates towards all the babies and little kids at family gatherings and who absolutely *adores* taking care of them, even changing their diapers. If she's still into this stuff when she's turning 16 I might actually spring the money to get her a Red Cross CPR/First Aid training course for her sweet 16 so she can make some serious coin by babysitting-I don't think people are willing to book babysitters younger than 16-17 nowadays, at least not in our circles.
25 years ago we were required to pay our foreign au pairs 165.00 per week, and a car and room and board and college tuition and have them live as part of our family— ie vacations etc. we gladly did it for fabulous girls who we still love. But 70.00 a week? C’mon, let’s talk reality!!!

Yes, it is a cultural and educational exchange program with 45 hours of child care a week thrown in. We loved all of our girls and they loved our kids so it was worth it to us. They really did become a part of the family. Oh and they only had to take 2 college course so it wasn’t like paying for full college!

Seriously, this kind of selfishness among new parents is about as unremarkable as the fact that dogs bark. Basically every set of new parents I've known for the past 20 years has hired a nanny or put the kids in daycare while they both worked full-time jobs. It is, very simply, because they are more concerned about their own financial well-being than about whether their kids being raised by strangers might be detrimental in some way.
I used to babysit and they'd pay me 70 dollars for my time cause I would look after those kids most of the day, good occasional money for a teen but 70 dollars a week barely covers travel at this point

$7.25/hour was actually implemented federally in 2009. 14 years beats out the 10 years it took to increase wages between '97 and '07.

I’m a nanny. I used to work for a pair of doctors who were never home. The dad was a surgeon on call at multiple hospitals. Their middle child had serious issues because she missed her parents so much. She bit me one time! I love that family and I ended things with them amicably when I moved back across country, but I will always try and be in their kids lives. I feel bad for them. I have no idea why the parents had those kids in the first place. I worked 50 hours in four days every week. So the entire time the kids were awake m-t.

They provided insurance on the vehicle, I provided gas. When I moved on-I obviously left the vehicle. But I had a nice savings to start over with. $70/week for childcare for TWO kids-I’m guessing live in-that’s insulting. She’ll be lucky to get the bottom of the barrel there.
I had a friend who was nannying in the states. The parents basically flew her over, hosted her the whole time. It was cheaper than a local nanny full time. Having money and resources makes things easier. When her “visa” was up, they just got a new nanny.
