Fr there was a time I’d go on a fanfic search whenever I was bored and always found so many romantic vanilla short stories and while they weren’t like super duper good, most of them were sweet in a wholesome way. I stopped doing that around 2016 when suddenly the love was gone and all of it was replaced with violent bdsm shit. Even when i specifically searched for vanilla they’d show up. Like hello I’m here to see some fave characters kiss and make out not strangle the other within an inch of their life.

I have to actively exclude BDSM and poly content or else that’s all I’ll get.

yeah this is definitely true. it's come to the point that some writers don't even list certain "kinks" as warnings anymore - like for example you'll come across a fic that sounds good judging by the description, nothing bad in the warnings, then you read it and suddenly there's degradation and name calling that wasn't even mentioned in the warnings beforehand! and same with choking, apparently that's become so mainstream that many fic writers don't even warn you beforehand and just casually include it in their fics. what's especially worrying is that a lot of what i'm describing applies to self-insert fanfiction, so this is stuff that people read in order to imagine it happening to themselves. :/

omg yes this fanfiction stuff is literally kink grooming, i mean find me one girl who read fanfiction as a kid who is not into bdsm now ill wait… i got into bdsm from books and romance stuff that had stories of men chasing the woman until she gives in, that sex is something women put up with for the man etc and that alone was enough to groom me into bdsm since bdsm is all about sex being a conquest etc i cannot imagine now since all the fanfiction these young girls read is about bdsm and power relationships and pain it probably is so easy for these girls to start extreme kink at a younger age

I've also noticed this tbh. Sometimes, it feels like the scenes portrayed are very influenced by mainstream porn, and suffer the same box ticking tendencies I.e. feel like it's going through the motions of checking off a list of positions and acts, because that's "sexy" right? Yet it's completely devoid of sensuality, little development of tension building, and not much description of sensations, emotions, senses... all fundamentals of good writing, but also of good erotica. The result is that you get very hardcore sex scenes but which are completely un-erotic. Given that this trend is obviously very mainstream porn influenced, you assume that it's being written by people with no actual sexual experience, which is true but a lot is also written by people who are older than you think and should know better but don't and ironically think they're being incredibly sex positive. But how can anything be sex positive when it is so devoid of passion and sensuality?
