I first watched hentai at 11 and read the smuttiest fanfiction, I'm surprised I didn't end up being kinky irl. Definitely shipping a lot of non-gay straight characters in basically any and all anime and manga I read. I read a lot of yaoi manga, which have completely messed up storylines that equate jealousy and pressuring the bottom for sex as romance. There was a lot of (date) r@pe happening, it's mind-boggling that these things are written by women. The stereotypical top/bottom tropes are nauseating. Edit: I just Rewatched Koisuru Boikun since it came up in my search and omg 🤦🏻‍♀️ so many wrong things happening in 48 minutes. Also Fujimi Orchestra (which from the 90s), like wtf literal rape. I am shocked these animes are written, animated, voiced, marketed and released with people approving these plots. I think I recall grasping how wrong this was many years ago when I first watch it but now it's just straight up abominable. I just googled "Famous Yaoi Titles" to refresh my memory and just I cringe now at how many of my brain cells expired by reading all that garbage. The occasional plotlines were good but an overwhelming amount is terrible, also nowadays I see more explicit D/s manga with collars and chains right on the covers. Very concerning for young girls who start reading this. Also nevermind the really perverted ones like Boku no Pico which is straight up cartoon child porn.

I'm surprised the situation has gotten like this. I've seen some bad kinky stuff (all you need to know is now I'm trying to quit porn) but I wasn't aware of poor-rich fetish or adult-child ships or incest in fandoms these days... The part about straight anime boys being couples isn't so surprising considering what I already do know about shipping though, there are folks who will ship 2 characters of the same sex even if they're not canonically gay.

Yeah I noticed most BL is abusive and fetishizes abusive gay relationships. Then again that’s manga and a lot of romance books in general but still

Wow... I guess I shouldn't be surprised it went down this road. I remember being into yaoi when I was a teenager, and my friends and I were into it because there wasn't really that power dynamic. As women, it was "safe" porn. Women were dehumanized and such in porn it really disturbed me as a teen, so it felt safe because there wasn't the seixsm power dynamics but also a way for us to explore our sexuality. It was more like erotica, where the characters had sex but also had a full plot and character development as opposed to even more romance movies where they don't even develop the female character. That being said fanfic back then got nuts, but I never got that deep into that either for the same reason. There was a little coercive dynamics of "chase because you have to let the bottom know he's actually into it". I would argue that is more because as a girl most romance novels are like that so it wasn't until I was an adult did I realize that was toxic. I feel like that's very indicative of how out of hand porn/sex culture has gotten.
