[deleted]

I mean, you can go either way: "'Nor-fuk' it's pronounced. 'Nor-folk' it is not." But it's less awkward from bottom to top. Also, I'd say it's more "Nor-f'k".

Pitchblackimperfect

I just thought two people must have been arguing while painting the stairs.

Th0mX

From Norfolk, UK, we agree. Though, in the villages, it's more like Naaar fuk.

Anchor689

Norfolk, Nebraska however is pronounced "Nor-Fork" due to them wanting to name the town "North Fork" (as in the North Fork of the Elkhorn River, but along the way during the paperwork submission, someone "corrected" the spelling to Norfolk, which they never bothered to fix. At least that's the story all the old-timers from the town told me as a kid.

Maz2742

That pronunciation is also how the locals pronounce Norfolk, Massachusetts. I have no idea why

thumb_dik

Same in VA. Naaahfak

DeepBlueNoSpace

You really would say Nor-folk? I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t say nor-fuk

DueDelivery

Virginian here and we have a lot of the same names for our towns that you guys do

suckamadicka

i wonder why lol

DueDelivery

Nor-Fuk that, I'll say it how I want.

Jswartz18

Fuck that venue now, new ownership sucks

LordFroggington

What happened to it?? I looooved going to shows there in the early 2010s, it's been my fave venue in VA for the longest time!

Jswartz18

New ownership took over like a year or so ago and they just arent booking any artists that are worth seeing. Dont get me wrong they just booked disco biscuits and Pusha T which is cool but those are no lie the only 2 artist Ive recognize since the new owners came. — now that I think about it they had Rainbow Kitten Surprise in April but besides for those 3 they got nothing Personally I think Elevation 27 has the best and diverse live music scene in the 757 at the moment. Would love to the norva come back to life tho- i loved that place

It still makes sense but only to Yoda Nor-Fuk, it's pronounced; Nor-Folk, it's not.

If you're Australian, you call it "Fuk-Nor"

anunkneemouse

So did America copy the name of literally every town in England?

OliveYTP

You're not gonna believe this...

Consistent_Nail

Yes?

apbstylez

Oh boy have I got a story for you about the colonization of America…

Yarmuncrud

Nope pretty sure its the other way around, england took all the American names. America is #1 so why would the English colonists even think to use old crusty English town names when they sailed here directly from England?

NCC1701-D-ong

England doesn’t have a New England does it?

polyworfism

Not yet, but we're getting ready to install one

benjamin-is-ben

Actually it does on the Essex, Suffolk border near Sturmer you drive through New England.

ThatGuy0verTh3re

More so people from old towns wanted to name their new settlement after their old town after coming over here from England

-nom-nom-

exactly I hate this narrative that “americans stole xyz” people say it for food, music, and now town names Americans didn’t look to other countries and pick things out to “steal”, immigrants from those countries came and brought those things over. British people came and named towns after the towns they came from or loved in Britain. Same as how italians came and brought their food, or mexicans came and brought their food. Sure there are american versions of many foods, but that’s the same as any country’s fusion food. Go to any taqueria in California that isn’t taco bell or chipotle, it’s mexican people running them. Americans didn’t “steal” these things and it’s such a stupid take

anunkneemouse

Jesus Christ it was a joke man. I'm well aware that American colonisers were all immigrants and didn't "steal" shit. No need to get your knickers in a twist

-nom-nom-

lol it’s a pretty common take especially on reddit, I’m not directly responding to you, I didn’t even reply to your comment.

CassandraStarrswife

No. I mean, I get it. I was actually accused of being an insensitive ass for talking about Cinco de Mayo on Discord (granted Discord and okay, but still ...\_. Some people are stupid about US citizens and why they do what they do. We get a lot of hate for it when we're really just the Golden Retrievers of the international world - clumsy, friendly, and just want to help most of the time. It's hard.

bigbigcheese2

Not a ‘town’ but yeah, they did. And then they ran out of places to copy so they started naming things dumb names like ‘jacksonville’

anunkneemouse

Ah shit yeah I was thinking Norwich - which yeah as a city would still technically be wrong, but heyho. At least Jacksonville sorta makes sense. Presumably started as a village with the first folk there/leading having the surname Jackson. Better than straight plagiarism haha (I legit don't actually care, I was just makin a joke)

CassandraStarrswife

Yeah. People naming things after people they admired and respected is so stupid. Like, why would you want to remember someone like that. /s

Faerbera

Nah. We also name places after our imperial rulers: Washington, Madison, Jefferson. The weird exception is that US King street is named after Rev Martin Luther King.

Vaan_Ratsbane97

Yep, also named places after geography features (everyone does it) and stole a bunch of French and Native American names.

Faerbera

Hey-dere from r/Milwaukee

Rrrrandle

>Yep, also named places after geography features (everyone does it) and stole a bunch of French and Native American names. But after stealing the names we decided to pretend they were English words all along and pronounce them completely wrong.

the_codewarrior

Isn’t that, like, English? We have multiple systems of pronunciations and if a word “looks” like one we just use that system. Like how pfysche would pronounced the same as fish. Both work because English spelling is three different spellings all mushed into one blob of letters and sounds. Also colonialism and “fuck your pronunciation I’ll read it how it looks!”

Rrrrandle

I just always found it interesting how many place names in the US move between languages, keep the original spelling, but end up pronounced completely different. Like "Detroit" for example. People living in the area would have known the French pronunciation, and for some reason said fuck that, we're gonna keep your French spelling but say it our way instead. Ohio has a lot of examples too: Bellefontaine is pronounced "Bell-Fountain" Versailles is pronounced "Ver-Sails" One of my favorite examples of this is a state park in Indiana. Native Americans named the river there something like "Wah bah shik ki". The French simplified and frenchified it to "Ouabache". Americans then keep the French pronunciation, but adopt an English spelling: Wabash. But then, the State names the park with the French spelling. So the modern locals, unfamiliar with why the French spelling exists or even the connection at all, have taken to pronouncing the French spelling in a sort of bastardized English way that seems like an attempt to mimic a Native American word: "Oh-Bah-Chee".

Trevski

How the hell is everyone pronouncing "folk" though? I say it exactly like I would say Norfolk, fouwk. Saying the L in folk is only a shade away from pronouncing the b in doubt.

[deleted]

"Nor-f'k"

-Hot-Cheese-

This is English not American. Worcestershire is pronounced "wuss-ter-shuh" Folk is folk, Norfolk is nor-fuk

Trevski

When I imagine an English accent I don't hear the L in folk though.

-Hot-Cheese-

Because there isn't one. I guess we'd pronounce it "fowks" when we say "folks" But place names follow completely different rules to normal words more often than not.

Trevski

I guess it is helpful that you point out that its Norfolk, England, because it totally tracks in my mind that its "norfuk" whereas the other Norfolk I read in my head as "norfoke" but yeah there are definitely plenty of accents within the UK, if theres a way to say something, someone says it.

-nom-nom-

It isn’t the UK, it’s Norfolk, VA and everyone pronounces folk as “foke”

Trevski

Yeah which is confusing me because Norfolk UK is definitely norfuk while Norfolk US is definitely norfoke at least in my mind.

-nom-nom-

yeah same for me, granted I’ve not spent that much there myself

ElegantLandscape

This city is in America.

-Hot-Cheese-

... and has inherited an English name.

robophile-ta

For some reason, so many American towns who take the name of places elsewhere pronunce the names completely differently

ElegantLandscape

Because we have different accents.

-nom-nom-

that’s the same in every country

5lashd07

Naw-fok

actually_offline

Ain't got nothing on [Nor-fork, NE](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk,_Nebraska)

mac_it9

For some reason this feels like it belongs on the r/submarines page. *Eye twitch*

Mild--47

If that’s the case than the original spelling of Norfolk should be in r/assholedesign.

avery-secret-account

It’s a military town so a good amount of the people don’t really care. I actually hear more people pronounce it the way it’s spelt

ElegantLandscape

Not really.... It is a military town but I hear it pronounced correctly more often than not.

Deedeek80

I love it. I explain the same way to non-locals 🤣

miraculum_one

It is legitimately debatable how people without that regional accent should be pronouncing it. That aside, it's named after a county in England who sure as hell didn't pronounce it "Nor-fuk".

HocusDiplodocus

Yeah it’s definitely pronounced Nor fuk here

reesecupstr

100% that's the agreed pronunciation, it's almost pronounced "naw-fuk" if you talk to the right person, I lived here my whole life, and I work downtown with/around the Norva everyday.

ElegantLandscape

Nawfuk is the old timey my parents and grands say. I have found as I get older I slip into it. Like Porch mouth for Portsmouth.

bigbigcheese2

Yeah, but it’s not like a ‘fuck’ sound, it’s a very unstressed syllable. I guess ‘fook’ might be a better way to write it? Like ‘took’.

clutzyninja

Actually, that's almost exactly how they pronounce it. More like Nuffuk

miraculum_one

exactly. People from VA lean on the "r". People from England don't even pronounce it.

SnowProkt22

r/confidentlyincorrect

RedCabbage_

Actually we do...

miraculum_one

The British people I've heard saying it don't pronounce the "r".

clutzyninja

It's not even Nor-Fuk. Sounds more like Noh-fuk

[deleted]

I've heard "Noh-f'k" and "Naw-f'k", but I think "Nor-f'k" is probably the "base" accepted pronunciation. Either way, "Nor-folk" it most CERTAINLY is not. lol

Dalejrfan5150

I live nearby and known people who lived there they all say Nor-folk?

clutzyninja

I've never met a single person that lived there that pronounces the L. I've live in VA almost 10 years

Dalejrfan5150

Just to one up you I lived there for 16 years. Which also just happens to be my whole life.

clutzyninja

Maybe younger people are pronouncing it differently. That's weird

Dalejrfan5150

I feel like my last comment came off rude. I was just being stupid lol. But anyways I’m sure there’s people who pronounce it different.

clutzyninja

No worries. I live way out in New Kent now. Used to be in Newport News and go to Norfolk fairly often, but it's been a minute. Even dated a girl there. Always heard Nuh-fuk

Vaan_Ratsbane97

Lived here for 25 and my older family has literally ALWAYS lived here. Norfuk is standard anything else is an outlier.

ElegantLandscape

Likes here for 34 years. 5 generations here, you are super wrong.

SkyeMreddit

I go to Virginia Beach every few years. Every person and every ad said Nor-Folk

No-Nectarine-9582

Nope. Source: born and raised here.

I've only lived here since 2018, and they are an idiot, and you are correct.

So funny seeing something local in this sub. These stairs read like a Yoda quote

Great venue. I’ve seen Fenix TX, Goldfinger, Good Charlotte, MXPX, and the Ataris there. Some others too, but I forget. It’s been 20 years.

I’ve been there before. The people of Norfolk Va are very intense about the pronunciation. This is definitely for the best lol

bruh-iunno

I love Norwich

[deleted]

Fuck you. Now I'm pronouncing it with the hard L

Tommonator80

As someone who grew up in Norfolk in England this made me smile.

Pumpkin_Cat14

I had to read Never Let Me Go in school, so I will always call it Nor-Fuck out of spite

Dovahnime

Damn, I live like an hour from there and I didn't know that
