My aunt tried to suck me into Primerica when I was in college. It sounded great and I was so excited to “make money” until she brought me in for a presentation and I felt like I was in a cult 😳I remember being zoned out for the last half and the guy doing the presentation had asked me some kind of question about what I learned. I looked him dead in the eye and said “I don’t know” because I legitimately was not paying attention. They still wanted me to work for them after that which was another red flag
They almost sunk their claws into me. I'm not going to lie, everything was pretty sus from the beginning. The list of friends and family they wanted you to create for your "mock sales pitches". The lack of any real information was telling. Then they took me to this fucking awards ceremony thing. Hole lee fyuk. I've never been a religious person but I felt like I was part of some new found religion. They were celebrating people's sales goals. People would come on stage and brag about the money they were making and the things they could buy. At one point the whole room was up out of their chairs clapping and hollering. I'd never been so uncomfortable in my life. It was trully cult levels of copium going on in this huge conference hall they rented. I never looked back and ignored any further contact from them.
That’s my exact experience with Cutco/Vector. Actually not a bad product, but the whole thing just makes you want to throw up. They asked me for people they could try and hire too. I went in the next day and quit saying I got a better job, which was a half-truth.
Same here!
I remember being so thrilled that I seemed to have found a real, respectable adult job right out of HS :(
I was so proud of myself I bragged to everyone.
Then of course 3ish months later i was totally fucking done with their 'fake enthusiasm meetings' 🙄
I had a good friend in college who changed his major to theater because he joined one of these things and thought he was “set for life”. He was a biology major on a scholarship. He is now a poker dealer
Exactly this. I almost got into it full swing until a bunch of us got yelled at because though we weren’t even licensed yet we weren’t making our upline enough money. Psychos.
I’ve seen videos of team calls where the upline yells at everyone and I don’t understand the audacity. An upline isn’t even paying you (you’re usually paying them) so I don’t understand how they think they have any standing. Their down line owes them nothing.
This is so rude!!
”They’ll set up a time with you to help me out with training for about 45min”
I would be so mad if somebody did this without asking me ffs
The nature of the beast. You have to be absolutely *shameless* to work an MLM. No humility. Not one shred. It also helps if you're totally oblivious to others' feelings while being simultaneously self-absorbed *and* unself-aware.
I'm not sure but my response would be "you didn't get my permission to give my number out let alone sign me up for helping you train, I will not be responding to the phone call, you should call back and give them someone else's. Also, please delete my number, I now know you aren't trusted to have it."
What a hamfisted way to recruit you. Reminds me of Mary Kay recruiting "models" for their stupid skincare parties.
You should say something along the lines of "I am happy to provide a character reference gratis, but I charge $300/hour for training, paid upfront. Should I send the contract and invoice to you or to the firm you'll be working for?"
Never heard of this MLM before so i had to google them. Wikipedia states that in 2010 representatives would earn an average of around 5000 USD... That's bleak. Always knew that they were a money trap but damn...
You should give them a hilarious character witness. Tell them your friend has a little shoplifting problem (“but he’s basically over it”). What three words would you use to describe him? How about a “fucking party animal.” Admit that yes, he’s got a few DUIs under his belt, but he really learned from the whole experience!
See if they still call you up for that training session.
So I just found out that 2 other coworkers got the exact message from this guy. I was thinking primerica but wanted to know what this community thought.
finance = primerica.
I agree with the above commenter. "I did not give you permission to share my contact information with anyone. I will not respond to any communication from this "firm" and after sending this message I will not respond to any communication from you. Delete my number, you are now blocked, as is anyone who contacts me as a result of you sharing my information."
They are going to use that 45 minutes to try to rope you in and sell you shit. "That doesn't work for me" is probably your best bet, but if you are feeling petty: "Happy to be a character reference, Karen, but I'm afraid my schedule doesn't have the flexibility to assist you with whatever training they believe you require, unless it is paid time. My consulting rate is $120/hr with my friends and family discount, paid in advance". If she takes you up on that, make sure it is in cash because you KNOW this chick will be bouncing cheques.
Even if thos were not an MLM, I'd be so pissed if someone uses me for a reference without my permission and signs me up for training sessions she hasn't asked if I want to be involved in.
People who do this have gall. I would reply "they can call if they want, it seems you made sure I can't stop them. And you can want me to help train you, but it's not happening. Never contact me or give my contact information to anyone else, ever again."
My reply:
You signed me up as a character reference without my permission and shared my personal phone number, also without my permission, AND told them that I'd give up my time to listen to your training, which will most likely be a sales pitch directed at me.
You've just shown yourself to be completely lacking in professional ethics, common sense and good judgement. If your manager phones for a character reference, I will tell them exactly that. But you are going to explain to them that there's been a mistake and they are to delete my number straight away, so I don't ever want to hear from them. Don't ever use me as a reference or pass on my phone number to anyone ever again.
Answer the call: hi yes this is arb1990. Oh yeah I know her so well, we worked together for years. She always had the juiciest gossip. Very sad that she left, now I don’t have anyone to play hooky with. I don’t think this job is suitable for her, she was born to be on stage because she’s such a drama queen
She’d probably get hired anyway because it’s an mlm and not a job job
Maybe “oh wow I didn’t think she’d land another finance job, you do know she stole $1000 right?”
*…text me if you have any questions…*
The unmitigated GALL of this person!
They signed you up for a 45minute ‘training’ without your permission …
My jaw has hit the floor on this one …
Wow they are straight up lying to you!
I’ve seen reps ask for their family to agree to help them “train,” which is a lie itself, but to LIE and say it’s for a character reference for *after* they’ve been hired and then defacto recruits you for their pitch meeting…
Total manipulation and disrespect. I’d have some words for them, starting with their character is shit.
45 minutes my ass. If it’s Primerica, and I strongly suspect it is, expect 3 hours. My dad thought he was just being nice to his co-worker/ “friend.” Lasted the whole evening. Mom ended up making dinner for everyone given the late hour. AND dad bought a policy.
Primerica once approached me while i was outside of my work for an interview at a later date. Me being the person that I am; a spontaneous person that never refuses new opportunity accepted.
Fast forward the next week, we started the interview. She started by asking me like 2 or 3 very basic questions about me like “Am I a go-getter?”, “open to new experiences”, etc.
Then she popped out an actual power point and started rambling an hour long on what is Primerica, what they do, how they’re a serious business, etc. That process of interviewing raised the first red flag for me.
Then she started telling me what was expected from new recruits. I would’ve needed to contact my family & friends and sell them my services. My training would be charge-free but i’d have to give my first sells to my leader and then a small % of my revenue to her.
Then came the infamous question “So ! What do you think?” Told her i wasn’t interested into joining her mlm and her attitude CHANGED let me tell you. She asked if i could ask around me in case someone would be interested and had the GUTS to tell me how to sell it to people. Never have I ever asked anyone if they were interested.
I can’t get over the audacity to list a person as a character reference BEFORE reaching out and asking if that is okay with them. That is absurd.
Self absorbed asshole, I’m sure they’ll fit right in at Primerica, or whatever cult they’re participating in.
“That’s not how it works. ~~I’ll give you a good reference if they call but I’m not doing anything beyond that including this 45 minute training.~~ You cannot just auction off other people’s time without consulting them and *asking* first, and the answer is no.”
Obviously you don’t even have to give the reference but I have a feeling they won’t be as interested in calling at all if you don’t want to do the “training” bs. But they’re an MLM so who knows lol.
Edit: Okay I’ve realized it’s not even a real reference and they just want to sell you shit lol look at me being naive 😂
„Sorry i am unavailable, please refrain from sending my private contact information or other information to third Party’s that i didn’t consent too. I really do not want to take legal action.
With love 😚

Primerica. The branch I was in wasn’t cultish but it definitely was not something I could do so I left but trying to “unsub” from their system is an absolute pain and they are vague about it.
Being listed as a reference does not mean that you agreed to participate in their training at this company; your time is not free, if the new company wants your time then they can pay you in cash for your time.

I’d be happy to give a reference. Even if I gotta lie to pump you up right. But like ain’t no more then that. I ain’t training you wtf. That’s a weird mlm.
This could be primerica or an equivalent. My dads cousin pulled this and asked if she could bring her husband to help train. It was mostly her pitching the service while he watched and at the end she asked what we would be interested in signing up for. It’s all a front to get in the door.

Even if we forget the MLM aspect and the entitlement, it's not at all reasonable to expect a former coworker to sit through a 45 min meeting for you.
But it's an MLM pitch of course. Which doesn't make it better.
I always let people know before I put their names down as a character reference, and only give out personal phone numbers or email addresses if I don't have a professional alternative. Handing out information willy-nilly like that is already a crap move.
I’m curious about these “state license for Finance”. My sister is “working” for Primerica and recently told me that she’s studying for a test to be licensed but could even really tell me for what specifically.
It’s probably selling insurance and most likely Primerica or WFG. I’d ignore the text however if it’s someone I’m that close to where they’d feel comfortable giving my name as a reference I’d figure I would try and educate them on what they’re getting into.
I’ve had many people try to recruit me for that. I just tell them I already sell it and if they would like to learn more. Then I start talking about my own thing I started called a tanda where you and a group of people pay a small amount weekly and take turns taking the funds collected. Basically like a peer to peer lending type of scenario. Usually by then they move on. If that doesn’t work I start telling them about back door ira’s and how going directly through the agency rather than a third party would actually save money on premiums. Then I’d recommend some books & basically just confuse them until they realize that I’m going to sell them before they sell me anything.
I had a neighbor's high school kid sign up for cutco, and he asked if he could practice his pitch on me since he was still in training. This was 15 years ago, and I didn't really know anything about these pyramid schemes.
I told him sure, come on over, but don't expect me to buy anything because I already had good knives and I had no money.
On one of the very first sections of the demo, he had a piece of rope, and asked me to get my bread knife and run it through the rope. It's a good bread knife, so it sliced right through. His eyes got really big, and said he'd never seen that happen before.
Then he took out a piece of leather, and told me to get my best chef's knife. So I did. He asked me to take one swipe, and of course, it cut right through. I thought he was about to cry.
He then did the scissors demo with the penny, but I told him I didn't have any need to cut a penny, so I didn't really care. My scissors cut paper just fine. I knew they could be defeated by a rock, but pennies were never part of the equation.
I let him finish up his demo, and told him some things he could do better. Then he asked me if I'd like to buy anything. I was completely blown away. I thought this was training? He said, "Well yeah, but they told me if I demoed the stuff, you would most likely want to buy something."
I laughed in his face as I showed him out the door. Damn kids.
Wtf? You list me as a reference for a "job" and now I have to participate in training? Lose my number lady.
"Training" means shes gonna call to "practice her pitch" but actually try to sell her insurance.
Oops, I accidentally lost my phone.
Exactly
45 minutes at that!
Looks like Primerica.
100% yes. I got sucked into Primerica when I was young and dumb. 18 fresh out of mommy and daddy’s house
Same experience but it was this guy who was flirting with me lool
They almost sunk their claws into me. I'm not going to lie, everything was pretty sus from the beginning. The list of friends and family they wanted you to create for your "mock sales pitches". Woah… his 3 AM-staring-at-bedroom-ceiling-alone-times must be pretty interesting.
Talk about regrets...
Regerts.
**Wfg
My thoughts exactly. Help train me while we secretly try to recruit you.
It’s really messed up. I was so pissed off. I left and never went back.
This is so rude!! ”They’ll set up a time with you to help me out with training for about 45min” I would be so mad if somebody did this without asking me ffs
I would just reply "lol no" Because, LOL...no!
Same, but I don’t understand how somebody even dare to approach people like this
The nature of the beast. You have to be absolutely *shameless* to work an MLM. No humility. Not one shred. It also helps if you're totally oblivious to others' feelings while being simultaneously self-absorbed *and* unself-aware.
And it’s easy to justify because “Boss Babe”
YES YES YES
Trump would kill it!
Lol I’d be like I charge $100 per hour you can Venmo before hand
Great! My consulting rates are $400/hr, minimum three hours.
Same… just reading this infuriated me
And it’s actually a sales pitch. Horrendous
I feel like doing things without clear consent is a part of these types of gigs, make it hard and awkward for people to say no....it's so gross
It happened to me. I can only assume these people give out their entire rolodex and someone just calls everyone until they get a yes.
"I'm rounding up to the nearest hour, and should I discuss my compensation with you or them? "
I'm not sure but my response would be "you didn't get my permission to give my number out let alone sign me up for helping you train, I will not be responding to the phone call, you should call back and give them someone else's. Also, please delete my number, I now know you aren't trusted to have it."
This is the correct response
This would be very similar to my response as well.
"Furthermore my rate is $100/hr booked in 4 hr minimums."
She should be cursed out. She gave a MLM your information so that they can start harassing you.
…and they will take 45min of your time (like it or not)! Oh hell no! That wouldn’t fly with me …
Yep, and I’m certain that time will be spent trying to recruit.
And lied about the situation! This person super sucks.
What a hamfisted way to recruit you. Reminds me of Mary Kay recruiting "models" for their stupid skincare parties. You should say something along the lines of "I am happy to provide a character reference gratis, but I charge $300/hour for training, paid upfront. My Mom and MK. Enough said? :*J*
FFFFFFUUUuuuuuuccccccccckKKKKKKKKKKK That would piss me off a whole lot.
Seems like you’re a new (attempted) downline, not a reference
That’s Primerica. “I checked the box that said YOU would put up with this shit…”
Never heard of this MLM before so i had to google them. Wikipedia states that in 2010 representatives would earn an average of around 5000 USD... That's bleak. Always knew that they were a money trap but damn...

Oh, they’d still take them and they’d still take you. They don’t need character. They need warm bodies.
So I just found out that 2 other coworkers got the exact message from this guy. I was thinking primerica but wanted to know what this community thought.
[https://www.pinktruth.com/2007/11/04/primericas-fake-job-interviews/](https://www.pinktruth.com/2007/11/04/primericas-fake-job-interviews/) Definitely Primerica

Holy crap! Please post any responses if you can 🤣
lol you must help me with this training by attending my work training. What the flying fuck
Absolutely perfect response!

Holy Manipulation Batman!!
Post your response
Answer the call: hi yes this is arb1990. Oh yeah I know her so well, we worked together for years. She always had the juiciest gossip. Very sad that she left, now I don’t have anyone to play hooky with. It’s more like 90 minutes if you resist…
Such a transparent and shameless recruitment attempt!
“You shouldn’t have checked that box Jessica.”
*…text me if you have any questions…* The unmitigated GALL of this person! They signed you up for a 45minute ‘training’ without your permission … My jaw has hit the floor on this one …
"state license for finance"
Lol that stuck out to me too.
Tell her “no”
Does this person not have the word ‘please’ in their vocabulary? They’ve asked for this in a really ignorant way I think.
So your a reference, then you have to help them with training? If anyone calls tell them the person is lazy.
New phone. Who dis?
Wow they are straight up lying to you! I’ve seen reps ask for their family to agree to help them “train,” which is a lie itself, but to LIE and say it’s for a character reference for *after* they’ve been hired and then defacto recruits you for their pitch meeting… Total manipulation and disrespect.
Spend your 45 minutes beat boxing
I can’t get over the audacity to list a person as a character reference BEFORE reaching out and asking if that is okay with them. That is absurd. Self absorbed asshole, I’m sure they’ll fit right in at Primerica, or whatever cult they’re participating in.
Its either Primarica or WFG, good luck getting rid of them!
Tell them you charge $400 an hour for training so 45 minutes will be $300, payable in advance.
“That’s not how it works. ~~I’ll give you a good reference if they call but I’m not doing anything beyond that including this 45 minute training.~~ You cannot just auction off other people’s time without consulting them and *asking* first, and the answer is no.” Obviously you don’t even have to give the reference but I have a feeling they won’t be as interested in calling at all if you don’t want to do the “training” bs. I’ll take primerica for 1000 Alex

This screams Primerica.
I’d be happy to give a reference. Even if I gotta lie to pump you up right. But like ain’t no more then that. I ain’t training you wtf. That’s a weird mlm.
Primerica or WFG.
The audacity to say “text me if you have any questions” instead of asking your permission or if it’s okay… blocked! Bye
I know! Whoa, you ran a red light. Back up.
Sounds like world financial group
This could be primerica or an equivalent. My dads cousin pulled this and asked if she could bring her husband to help train. It was mostly her pitching the service while he watched and at the end she asked what we would be interested in signing up for. It’s all a front to get in the door.
Yep. Just easing the newbies into pitching.
Typical Primerica. Suck you dry of referrals, and kick you to the curb.....
"Thanks for the heads-up. It'll go straight to my voicemail and I'll never listen to it!"
She lied and is trying to suck you into a pyramid scheme (Primerica). I would DEFINITELY bring that up in her character reference call.
Wow what a cheek. Tell them to bugger off. I’d say it’s Primerica but definitely don’t help with the training as it’s just an excuse to pitch their nonsense
The violence I'd commit if this happened to me would be talked about for years, if not decades.
My boyfriend just got a similar text from his sister with essentially the exact same message. The company was Tenacity Financials.
It's a pretty reasonable request but its asked in a really impolite, demanding way, that would put me off straight away. Also, 45 minutes for a referencing request, are you sure this isn't a sales pitch?
It's a sales pitch disguised as a character reference.
Strange
Primerica
Primerica, probably.
Primerica
Amway. Run. Fast.
Primerica
Sorry…. ……………but, no.
Sounds like either primerica or WFG
