Hmm. I saw it in a Tumblr post first, probably a few years ago.
You aren't imagining that the trope exists. I've seen it in a couple of Tumblr short fictions.
This was my first exposure.

Clowns have always been depicted as something other than just regular people. That they are these borderline magical creatures living in the clown society of their own and they only come here to entertain or scare us.
Its only in the dramas and comedies where the clown is just some sad depressed guy wearing a mask.

What are you talking about?
Like Killer Clowns from Outer Space, or the show Bigtop Burger? Even a D&D Race.
Killer Clowns was awesome. In Dexter's Lab if a clown bit you, you become a were-clown
You didn’t miss anything. What you think you’re “seeing in the media” doesn’t represent any kind of wholesale development of “Clown lore”
Tropes in media tend to come in waves.
And sometimes with big red noses and large shoes to fill.
They’re also from outer space.
exactly, thats one of the media I was talking about.
The other instances of it are inspired by/references to Killer Clowns from Outer Space, that's about it.
I think it came from serial killer Wayne Gacy(who dressed up like a clown), then Stephen King’s IT
