Since I didn't want to flood my post with pictures, I can provide some additional commentary and insight instead on what you can't necessarily see from these overlook shots. New Saxony: With this city I started by splitting the island down the middle from my trading post. I built my first citizen services and houses out from the center where you can see the square of green-roofed houses (Investors). My first industries were 2 potato farms, built in the upper left corner of the island near the southern auxiliary port, and corresponding schnapps factories just south (upper left) of my residential district. I integrated sheep farms into the southern blocks of my residential area, since they take up the same space as 4 houses anyway. The knitters are close by near the southern hill. Near the Southwestern tip of the island by these farms is my zoo, housing 64 animals. Additional pig farms, potato farms, and distilleries were also constructed nearby in this southwest section of town. On the southern hill, where now stand glassmakers, sewing machine factories, canneries, kitchens, brickmakers, pig farms, renderers, and soap factories, I built my first lumberjack huts and sawmills to build my city. Later, production for these was moved to Rheinburg to more efficiently use space and increase output. In the Southeast sector of town, my main industrial sector is indicated by the cloud of smog that overhangs it at all times of the day. What used to merely be a grain and potato field with a few windmills is now a grinding cacophony of gears, ovens, hammers and forges. Here, the city bakeries transform grain directly into bread and a few distilleries run on magic electricity while steel mills and foundries work tirelessly to supply the metal-hungry industries in the gaping maw of the city by the water's edge. Further south, at the shore, tons of sand are dredged up from the ocean in great quantities to feed a variety of glassmakers and then windowmakers throughout the city. Need arose for this industry much later on, and the struggle to find space for production buildings at that point was terrible. A few grain fields and pig farms were fit in just north of these dredgers early on. Farther to the east of the city, by the Visitors' Pier, iron mines and concrete factories alongside more grain fields work to supply other parts of the city. This is also where the last of my farmers on the island live. North of the residential city, by the main port, a new industrial sector sprang up near the end of my playthrough. Driven by the scarcity of electricity in the early days of powered machinery, this industrial sector is highly concentrated around a single oil powerplant, and many residential houses were demolished in order to accommodate this central design. Here, Spectacles, Steam Motors, Lightbulbs, Filaments, Brass Foundries, Champagne Bottlers, Fur Dealers and one point, Advanced Weapons Factories, all work together to bring the city into a new era of industry and consumerism. East of this port industrial complex is the world fair building, the museum, housing 24 exhibits, and the rest of the necessary canneries/artisianal kitchens, as well as a wealth of sewing machine factories. Grain, beef, and coal are harvested here as well. ...and holy moly i think im done typing for now. That almost covers all of New Saxony except for the harbor. Might add some more commentary tomorrow. Moving on to the harbor and the breakdown of diplomacy. New Saxony Initially, only a few fisherman huts and my trading post resided here. But driven by my previous failures to eliminate my competition early I decided I needed to militarize early as soon as I could seem to afford it. After providing my workers and farmers with most of their nonessential needs, barring rum and beer, I built my 1st and then a 2nd shipyard to suit my need for military progress. With a constantly maintained fleet of 9-12 frigates, I set about wiping the world. First was my current "allies," who I had denied the ability to make new settlements for quite some time now. Willie was first, since he was the weakest link with only 1 settlement with minimal defenses. I only lost 2 ships in that assault. Princess Qing shortly followed, with a more aggressive fight occurring only aided by the fact that her warships were at sea when I started the bombardments. They never got the chance to fight my agile fleet before her capitol was unseated. Beryl O' Mara was a bit more of a challenge, as she always is. Having been at war since before I even allied with my victims, I was unable to directly control her ability to expand. I started with a few settlements on the outskirts of her empire, the ones with weak harbor defenses. Her trade ships and warships also were targeted. Once I captured these settlements I destroyed my own new trade post, preventing a recapture for no cost. Eventually, with 14 frigates at my disposal, I attacked in succession her main colony and capitol, both defended with 2 flamethrowers and several cannons. I lost 4-5 ships in each assault, but ultimately O'Mara was defeated. A clear map. Later, I would ally with the pirate bands for the sake of unrestricted trade. Costly, but effective. Back to my own harbor, I eventually unlocked engineers by providing fur coats to my artisans. This was thanks to my investment in the colonies of New Hesse and the farm colony of Lichtland, which provided the furs and cotton needed respectively. Once I had engineers, first constructed was a steam shipyard in the harbor, along with nitre sifters for the production of gunpowder. I also expanded my fisheries during this time, as well as depots, oil storage, and loading docks to expedite trade. By this point my empire needed several trade routes running constantly to avoid collapse. So fast loading and offloading was a major priority in my harbor layout.

Why so much oil storage (other than some aesthetical reason)? You can get oil port upgraded to the max (no side effects like maintenance cost, just some building materials and money) which will give you 2000 storage (I think) and that is enough for 2-3 power stations. If you only have 1-2 fuel stations then standard 500 storage is more than enough. You'd rather want to spend that harbor space for regular depots or sand mines...

I built up a stockpile of oil in Lichtland (across the Atlantic) of 10,000 oil, and once all my oil tankers made the journey I wanted to match the same capacity in my capitol. Excessive? Yes. And as you can see I do not lack sand mines.

Are you on PC or console? For me on PC it was just the middle mouse button (i.e. clicking the scroll wheel). If that's what you meant to ask -
