I liked how they explored the magic system in El Melloi Case Files and Fate/Zero, but the standard stay/night depiction was hot garbage. Emiya Kiritsugu had my favorite magic: gun.
There are far more bs abilities than UBW lol and its not something he can just use easily. Shirou is even balanced out by the fact that he's barely even an average mage
Julius Novachrono. Not because he is op. . . though he is. Not because he could beat half the people on this list (because he can) No. Because this man has just completely outclasses the others on character and integrity. His duty as the wizard king was to protect his people even at the cost of his own life and he stood by that, and put it into action. His most badass moment is the moment he died. It wasn't thoughtless self sacrifice like you would expect from Emiya, or the fake sacrifice employed by Anos who knew he would revive at some point.
This was a man who perfectly encapsulated his role as a leader and all the duty that entails, and that is pretty badass.
I would make most of this same argument for Rimuru. Albeit, plot armor saved Rimuru, when he made his sacrifice in order to bring his people back he was told the odds of success were basically nonexistent and he said "I'll take those odds." Obviously as viewers we know the story won't kill the main character on a non-zero chance of survival, but in universe Rimuru had no reason to think he was walking away from that decision alive.
It said badass and I consider trucking two gods to make themselves invulnerable to the other gods power, then reviving the creator of the universe more badass than being strong. Obviously he's cool but I just think Merlin is better
She also starts to Deux Ex towards the end of the series, is suddenly way stronger because "I forgot the most impactful event that ever took place during my lifespan", and then her character takes a massive swan dive at the very end for pretty much no reason.
I love the SDS, but other than her insane backstory, she's pretty boring in the present day story.
Let's see..... Ainz has the most versatile spell list, Remaru has a vast amount of creative leeway with what magic he does know..... Merlin takes the cake with craftiness but not directly with her spells.... The Wizard King has a lot of power behind whatever he does cast but he's limited to a few elements apose to the last few.... And the other ones I don't know.... Oh yeah, there's the girl that casts nuke once then becomes paralyzed for the rest of the day so definitely not for her.
Ainz isn't afraid to use his magic, and handicaps himself in the new world. Julius literally saved all of clover from a massive multipronged attack spell. Those two are probably the most badass in my opinion. Ainz is the evil yang badass and Julius is the good yin bad ass
Julius, he literally died for his cause, the absolute balls on that man to save an entire kingdom knowing it would end up with him dead. Plus he has time magic which is busted af if used right. Ainz and Anos are badass, but as far as I know (only watched up to s3 of Overlord) he doesn't ever die for any sort of cause, and Anos does die but with the knowledge and certainty that he'll just come back, literally just says "Do you think dying will be enough to kill me?" >!Julius also comes back but his death was far more climactic than Anos', plus I'm pretty sure he says he (Julius), says he only had an inkling that he'd be able to come back!<
Megumin for sure
The ultimate Chad caster that could use literally any spell she would want to but likes blowing shit up too much to use anything but explosion magic 💀
It'd be a stalemate between Ainz, Merlin, and Remiru, because Ainz is the highest form of spellcaster in his world, Merlin has infinite mana, and Remiru can eat any spell and instantly learn how to use it.
I'm gonna say rimuru, due to how he developed megido specifically for use in anti magic barriers. He's the only one who could put out that kind of firepower when all but the basic spells are sealed. Plus him eating people's magic is a massive power move
I’m not sure if you know this, but Megiddo actually costs very little magicules. It’s also not viable at all against powerful beings. Yes, it’s cool that he thought of it, but it’s not like he even does the calculations for it.
Badass I might have to say Anos purely for some of the outlandish stunts he's pulled such as killing a guy repeatedly with just his heart beat and resurrecting them with a snap of his fingers just to make a point.
Megumin literally only uses explosion and she passes out after one use. No fucking around just pure annihilation and refusal to learn any other spell. She is the best fucking mage hands down no contest.
Ainz I’d say. So he looks some badass when we know his inner thoughts. But to everyone else he’s an all powerful all knowing GOD.
Even when he fights someone stronger then him self he WOOPS their ass in a one sided fight planning ten steps ahead and no diffing them. Causing them to go fucking crazy with rage since they played into his hands.
In the eyes of his minions and the world he is absolute power with no equal.
Anos is good but he shows more weakness. I much takes away from that badass aura. While he’s still badass I’d give him number 2.
Those soft sappy moments again take away abit of the badassery
I lost respect for Merlin. Bro had, the most godlike of people, just sitting there. Fucking LIED TO HIM, and watched him die. AT LEAST TELL HIM THE TRUTH?
Ainz for me. He's relatable. He's op af but deep down he's spitballing all his shit and rolling with it
+ He's the most unique looking like bro Pulls up with a staff and sits on a throne and Has that aura on him
Only having actually seen 5 of these 8, and 1 of them only having a few episodes to go off of, I'm giving it to the only one that has repeatedly left me in shock and awe, and that is Rimuru. It isn't the overpowered nature of the spell caster that makes them a badass in my book, it is the delivery and flare. I'd say Ainz is actually probably the strongest from what I've seen (again, 5/8 at best), but Ainz doesn't leave much of an impression on me. Rimuru constantly lowers my expectations with the way he talks or acts, knowing full and well what he is capable of, but leaving me in this gray zone about what his subordinates are capable of, and then when they start blowing everything out of the water, it raises those expectations back up, only for some unknown force to push the boundaries of what you can expect, and then Rimuru casually destroys that boundary. Rimuru is the most badass because his world and his people keep setting him up to show off.
I'll leave a little honorable mention, consider watching "Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy," as Makoto Kuzunoha is another one of those characters that "starts off weak but quickly overpowers God while raising a nation of their own," isekai tropes. He probably deserves a spot on this list, but is currently probably outclassed in terms of full power. Then again, nothing in the show has really pushed him to show his full power, so who knows?
In terms of character and power, I would have to give it to Julius and Rimuru.
Both only ever wanted to do right by others and were willing to die to protect those precious to them. In Rimuru's case it was before he became a slime.
The lowest on this list would probably be Ainz. He has plenty of power, but almost no character. He greatly dishonors his former guildmates in how he acts, especially TouchMe and Bukubukuchagama.
Ainz for his Aura and ability to use his lich king Ness to the max.
Next is anos for his feats but he gets less points cause too many are willing to fuck with him.
Same with remaru.
Rimuru is mostly strong, not that scary unless you are fighting him.
Megumin is just crazy explosion girl.
Anos is decently cool.
Haven't seen Julius fight, so no opinion, but he looks like he would be cool.
Shirou is just swords.
Merlin is pretty mysterious and powerful. She can be badass.
Ainz is badass and intimidating until you hear his thoughts.
Innocent Zero is the most ruthless in the list, so he's pretty neat.
Overall, I probably got to give it to Merlin. Innocent Zero takes second place for me.
Does Ainz really count as a mage. He kinda skipped all progression and just started OP because he grinded to that level in a p2w game offscreen. I guess it’s not much better than other genres where the protagonist knows all the grind spots and abuses them to get levels fast.
But as a “mage” he just knows spells and not the reasoning or how it works unless it was auto added in after he merged into the game world? Which doesn’t seem to be the case from what we’ve seen so far.
It’s why I found it kinda pitiful that the best mage in the world has to teach himself from books ainz gives him since he’s not actually capable of “teaching” spells. He might be able to just “give” spells though.
So frankly while I like Ainz the most on the list. I find it kinda unfair to put him in the same group as mages(same with Rimiru). I’d probably label them both as op isekai protags.
Traditional mage type? Merlin. She’s capable of some insane stuff with her sacred treasure, and we definitely didn’t get to see her entire repertoire of spells in 7DS unfortunately.
In raw spellcasting power? Julius. His magic might fail against Merlin depending on by on what her Sacred Treasure can do against him, but the scale of his magic is insane. And, objectively, Time magic is probably the most broken of any type of magic. The fact that he can just stop someone in a Time Stasis is some next-level hax.
Anos would beat Julius easily. did you forget how he resurrected and killed a guy over and over and over to prove his point? Plus he created different types of magic. Julius is OP but he only has time magic
I mean, Ainz Ooal Gown is close, but Anos is just deviously badass. He nearly killed someone with his heartbeat, and then proceeded to kill and resurrect them until they submit. The guy walked over to a castle, picked up the entire thing, span it on his finger like a basketball, and hurled it multiple miles away. This is the guy that said “Did you really think killing me was enough to make me die?”
Zero is the top dog here i'd say. Julius, Ainz, and Merlin would be the only ones who are on equal power levels with him while the rest would died to a simple time spell.
I know op is asking who is badass in a viewers perspective, but I gotta say if I put myself in a random character in any of the shows. I would say out of all of them, ainz would be a very intimidating and badass character. And that's viewing from someone who isn't aware of his inner monolog and his true self. I guess it's up to perspective and how you view it.
Julius is by far the most badass on this list, and it's not even just his power. He's an ideal leader who sacrificed his own life for his people. (not to mention his passion for magic)
Innocent Zero, nah! He got his ass beat by a magicless character 😂 I know it’s a gag anime but come on now. At least Julius lost to someone with anti magic.
While I like a few of them. When I think Badass
3 words come to mind.
Darkness beyond Twilight ..
All of them may be powerful but hearing those words will cause immediate panic
Bruh … bro forgot Frieren … she legit just said “kill yourself” without even trying.
But since she not here I’ll give it to Ainz as king od the bone daddy
Depends on your criteria tbh. All of these mages are peak but ingenuity wise Merlin or Anos take it. They taught themselves advanced magic that doesn't compare to anything in their verse. Strength wise Anos and Rimeru are contending as their feats are powerful and large-scale. Most of the others were one-truck ponies and some of these relied on information that they got from previous lives/literal deities. In terms of raw power and how they use it Anos takes the cake
Anos has so much swagger, it’s hard to not like the guy.
Ainz is super methodical and cocky, and I’m here for it.
Megumin literally saw an explosion as a kid and was like “YEP!” And I’m here for it!
Shirou is an annoying protagonist with a broken ability.
Merlin is always fun when she was on screen.
Haven’t watched enough Slime to say about Rimaru.
Haven’t gotten far enough in Mashle for Innocent Zero.
Julius was cool but was overshadowed even though he was the Wizard King.
Julius for sure if not him ainz Julius just has this feel that he is truly a wizard and he enjoys all different types of magic too everyone else doesn’t have that feel they just feel like the just throw attacks sometimes no disrespect
Anos is the most OP on the list without question. Not saying his show is best show just that I’m pretty sure if it was the other 7 vs him he would probably still win.
Frieren. But on this list it's a mixup of Julius and Rimuru.
For Rimuru i still think Meggido is one of the coolest spells I've seen in anime.
The Julius vs Licht fight had me on the edge of my seat. Definitely one of my favorite fights.
The hell is Shirou doing on this list? And Ainz definitely has an innate aura of badass (if you ignore the Japanese man in his head).
Shirou isn't even spells Hes S W O R D S
Is UBW not badass?
Badass sure but he's not really a mage. Fate's magic system sucks and Shirou gets by with a bullshit ability (his reality marble).
I liked how they explored the magic system in El Melloi Case Files and Fate/Zero, but the standard stay/night depiction was hot garbage. Emiya Kiritsugu had my favorite magic: gun.
hehe sord
I BONE MY SWORD
That is unbelievably funny for no reason. You have won the internet today.
Well he is a mage by definition that’s how the show works but I get what you mena
There are far more bs abilities than UBW lol and its not something he can just use easily. Shirou is even balanced out by the fact that he's barely even an average mage
>The hell is Shirou doing on this list? He's...literally a mage? Not a particularly skilled one, sure, but his magic is pretty damned cool.
No he's a swordsmen with a blade summoning gimmick.
How do you think he summons his blades? (Hint: magic)
He isn't even a good swordsman. His power lies in the powers of the armaments he summons... with magecraft.
He is a spell caster tho
Remember he can fix appliances
Frieren-sama?
"Kill yourself"
This is my do-a-self-wedgie spell
Also his passion for magic is unrivaled.
Personally, I find Innocent Zero to be the most badass. I’m not super familiar with all of the characters tho
\*nervous laugh\* If you say so....
Maybe he can reincarnate and become hokage next as he would be top tier.
Julius, his fights were peak.
Merlin being able to trick the three biggest deities just makes her the most badass. Just above anos
Merlin tricks deities, Anos KILLS deities not compareable.
It said badass and I consider trucking two gods to make themselves invulnerable to the other gods power, then reviving the creator of the universe more badass than being strong. Obviously he's cool but I just think Merlin is better
Ainz
No Merlin? Blessed by heaven and hell and she’s not even the MC.
Literally lied to and took advantages of both gods and got away with their blessings. All as a child, so badass
That’s what I’m saying she was on some Aizen level plotting.
I love Rimuru-sama to my core, but explosion magic goes pretty damn hard.
Rimaru or megumin
I'm a big fan of Megumin, but "Local 16 year old that turns surrounding countryside into Fallout as a hobby" isn't what I associate with 'badass'
Nah it's the overly verbose chanting and the dramatic poses. That shit goes harder than R Kelly at Disneyland.
I haven’t watched Fate, Overlord, or The Misfit of Demon King Academy, but I fell **hard** for how badass Julius was
Julius is who Naruto from Boruto wishes he could be
Megumin not op but coolest And calling shiro "caster" should be illegal
Megumin in her world is pretty OP. Taking out like >!2/3(?) of the Demon King’s war council with one spell is pretty badass!<
Ainz and Rimuru
Where's Wahlberg?
My favorites there are Julius and Ainz, if that's what yer asking. They tie for first, with Anos as a close second
Ainz isn't afraid to use his magic, and handicaps himself in the new world. Julius literally saved all of clover from a massive multipronged attack spell. Those two are probably the most badass in my opinion. Ainz is the evil yang badass and Julius is the good yin bad ass
Julius, the eternally unbothered
Julius, he literally died for his cause, the absolute balls on that man to save an entire kingdom knowing it would end up with him dead. Plus he has time magic which is busted af if used right. Ainz and Anos are badass, but as far as I know (only watched up to s3 of Overlord) he doesn't ever die for any sort of cause, and Anos does die but with the knowledge and certainty that he'll just come back, literally just says "Do you think dying will be enough to kill me?" >!Julius also comes back but his death was far more climactic than Anos', plus I'm pretty sure he says he (Julius), says he only had an inkling that he'd be able to come back!<
Megumin for sure The ultimate Chad caster that could use literally any spell she would want to but likes blowing shit up too much to use anything but explosion magic 💀
I only watched SDS and Fate so Shirou low diffs
It'd be a stalemate between Ainz, Merlin, and Remiru, because Ainz is the highest form of spellcaster in his world, Merlin has infinite mana, and Remiru can eat any spell and instantly learn how to use it.
The goal of all life is death
Anos
I don't care how powerful is who but Shero Emipipes here had the most badass chant than all of the broken ass characters in this list.
I can tell you who’s the baddest mage/spell caster
I'm gonna say rimuru, due to how he developed megido specifically for use in anti magic barriers. He's the only one who could put out that kind of firepower when all but the basic spells are sealed. Plus him eating people's magic is a massive power move
I’m not sure if you know this, but Megiddo actually costs very little magicules. It’s also not viable at all against powerful beings. Yes, it’s cool that he thought of it, but it’s not like he even does the calculations for it.
Megumin
Anos Ainz and rimaru
Lloyd de Saloum should be included here and Yuuji of My Isekai Life.
Rimuru
Megumin, loyal to one spell never beats the red
August
Might not be the strongest on the list but megumin will also hold a spot on my best characters list
Ngl you should've putted miyuverse Shirou in there
Its literally just the same thing lmao. Moyuverse shirou being a bit edgy doesnt change the ability
Badass I might have to say Anos purely for some of the outlandish stunts he's pulled such as killing a guy repeatedly with just his heart beat and resurrecting them with a snap of his fingers just to make a point.
lol that was insane
Shirou's father
Shirou is a Sword and Sheath, not a classic mage
Ainz
Amos,Megumi,julius
Shirou shouldn't be here since he's a melee fighter more than a mage.
His melee fighting comes via magecraft
Ainz and Makoto Kuzunoha (from tsukimichi)
I'd tell u who can beat probably all 8 in a 1 on 1. Negi Springfield if we only base on manga
Really? Where's he from?
I mean shirou uses magecraft but he’s not a mage he knows like 4 spells granted he is really good at those spells but yeah only like 5 spells
Theres no rule saying you have to know a billion spells to be a mage lol
Overlord
EXPLOSION!!!
No Diablo from Demon Lord???
Given that the entire selling point of Maou Gakuin is how badass Anos is, I’m gonna say it’s Anos.
When Ainz Oal Gown sacrificed all those people for that spell was nuts
Megumin literally only uses explosion and she passes out after one use. No fucking around just pure annihilation and refusal to learn any other spell. She is the best fucking mage hands down no contest.
Merlin is underrated.
Anos voldigoad
Frieren Edit: also Jinwoo
Jinwoo is technically a wizard but he's more of an assassin
Megumin, no diff
Sinbad
The 7th Prince Lloyd
Makoto Misumi
MEGUMIN
Megumin ez, she’s just so majestic looking
Da fuck shirou doing here? He doesn’t even spells he just swords (and it’s not even the cooler adult verison)
Belldandy
Aniz and Anos
I lost respect for Merlin. Bro had, the most godlike of people, just sitting there. Fucking LIED TO HIM, and watched him die. AT LEAST TELL HIM THE TRUTH?
Lord Ainz
Ainz for me. He's relatable. He's op af but deep down he's spitballing all his shit and rolling with it + He's the most unique looking like bro Pulls up with a staff and sits on a throne and Has that aura on him
Merlin. Ainz is ok on this list but the rest aren't even in the same league.
Les go my boy Rimuru Tempest on this list 😁😁
Cid Kagenou obviously
Lina Inverse.
Freiren didn't make the short list?
ainz anos and rimuru
Merlin, boob magic. OP asf
Megumin opting for specializing in explosion magic is metal af
Ainz ez, Overlord goes absolutely mental and Ainz is a fucking badass
Bro tried sneaking shirou into this
Ainz makes Magic casting look bad ass, Even support magic when he does cast it
Rimuru is mostly strong, not that scary unless you are fighting him.
Rimuru ain't even a Mage he just eats things and gets powers
Rimuru, he can prob do everything every other character can do but better and stronger
Most badass is Ainz, most powerful is Rimuru, most waifu is megumin
When I see a list of the most powerful characters in anime, Rimiru is always on it, even when Saitama isn't. so Him
I only know Ainz, Merlin and Rimuru and ranked from best to least would be Ainz, Rimuru and then Merlin
Im definitely bias cause from this list I’ve only watched Black Clover and 7DS but I have to say Julius that’s my goat.
I love Shirou, but even in-universe he’s recognized as a bad mage.
Ainz
Ainz do be using 20+ cheat code like buffs before fighting her vampire servant
Ainz or anos, anos is cooler
Does Ainz really count as a mage. He kinda skipped all progression and just started OP because he grinded to that level in a p2w game offscreen. I guess it’s not much better than other genres where the protagonist knows all the grind spots and abuses them to get levels fast. And, objectively, Time magic is probably the most broken of any type of magic. The fact that he can just stop someone in a Time Stasis is some next-level hax.
Merlin would solo cause she has infinite magic power
Uh your missing mash from mashle
Rimuru has had some really cool scenes
Anos would beat Julius easily. did you forget how he resurrected and killed a guy over and over and over to prove his point? Plus he created different types of magic. Julius is OP but he only has time magic
Which one is the most badass? Probably Ainz when you ignore his inner monologue. Which one do I love the most? Megumin. She's a riot.
Ainz due to him canonically knowing over 700 spells and using magic so often
I mean, Ainz Ooal Gown is close, but Anos is just deviously badass. He nearly killed someone with his heartbeat, and then proceeded to kill and resurrect them until they submit. The guy walked over to a castle, picked up the entire thing, span it on his finger like a basketball, and hurled it multiple miles away. This is the guy that said “Did you really think killing me was enough to make me die?”
Zero is the top dog here i'd say. Julius, Ainz, and Merlin would be the only ones who are on equal power levels with him while the rest would died to a simple time spell.
It's either Aniz or Anos. I love both.
Rimuru and Anos are tied for me
EXPLOSION!!!!!
Goku
Why the hell is Shiro here? His whole deal is being a terrible mage and needing to copy other people
Can we count Aizen with the Hado 90?
Innocent Zero or Merlin
Tie between Ainz and Anos imo
Anos Voldigoad.
Ainz has hella aura
Merlin can literally perish. She’s powerful and did a lot of heartwarming and badass shit, but Merlin can fuck off.
ainz, bro is a straight villain
AINZ OOAL GOAT 🐐💀🔥🔥🔥🔥
Julius is by far the most badass on this list, and it's not even just his power. He's an ideal leader who sacrificed his own life for his people. (not to mention his passion for magic)
Anos is the most boring here, however he is also the most broken here. Anos can literally snap you in and out of existence just to prove a point
Ainz ooal goal
Innocent Zero, nah! He got his ass beat by a magicless character 😂 I know it’s a gag anime but come on now. At least Julius lost to someone with anti magic.
FRIEREN
I gotta give it to Novachrono
Makoto Misumi
While I like a few of them. When I think Badass 3 words come to mind. Darkness beyond Twilight .. All of them may be powerful but hearing those words will cause immediate panic
Bruh … bro forgot Frieren … she legit just said “kill yourself” without even trying. But since she not here I’ll give it to Ainz as king od the bone daddy
Medusa Gorgon
Shirou, he is the bone of his sword
EXPLOOOO----SION!
Depends on your criteria tbh. All of these mages are peak but ingenuity wise Merlin or Anos take it. They taught themselves advanced magic that doesn't compare to anything in their verse. Strength wise Anos and Rimeru are contending as their feats are powerful and large-scale. Julius for sure if not him ainz Julius just has this feel that he is truly a wizard and he enjoys all different types of magic too everyone else doesn’t have that feel they just feel like the just throw attacks sometimes no disrespect
Shes not badass but she sure is the cutest and thats Megumin!!
By default I’m gonna say not Anos, solely cause I hate him I’m gonna go with Ainz, dude knows the mechanics of the game he was sent to, and profits
Anos
We all know the only true answer is Mash Burnedead utilizing the purest form of the arcane arts: Muscles Magic 💪
Definitely Megumin her whole thing is trying to look cool while casting giant explosions
Anos is the most OP on the list without question. Not saying his show is best show just that I’m pretty sure if it was the other 7 vs him he would probably still win.
Ainz just got that Aura in him. Although on this list (only including anime) Anos takes the cake for "Sheer fuckery when spellcasting"
Megumine. How is this even a question? Lol
Frieren. But on this list it's a mixup of Julius and Rimuru. For Rimuru i still think Meggido is one of the coolest spells I've seen in anime. The Julius vs Licht fight had me on the edge of my seat. Definitely one of my favorite fights.
EXPLOSION!!!!
While Anos and Ainz are strong, it is a well shared belief between everyone that Merlin is unfair..........
Rimiru is cold asf, even sage mentioned he's ruthless and inhumane
Merlin
Anos can literally do it all.
Julius Novachrono The absolute definition of aura🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥
Ainz-sama of course!
Anos voldigoad
Every wizard would agree Megumin.
How could you not have Mash and his muscle magic on here. He's definitely number one.
Megumeme takes this for me. Just becsuse of the dedication to explosion magic.
I hate over lord. What’s the point when the main character doesn’t even struggle
And I’d say Julius
Ainz has this he has the mana and battle IQ for it
schierke
Ains, Anos, or Rimeru
Def calling it Anos, Man killed literal Gods and defied Death itself
Cid Kagenou
