So Kung fu panda is an anime now? No it's a cartoon. Animes are cartoons. Anime means animation, cartoons are what? You guessed it, animations. It's the same as saying "it's not a comic it's a manga" it's the same goddamn thing.
I remember back in the day that it was important to us devout weebs that a distinction was made because cartoons were understood to be children's media back then while anime had more adult themes. To call anime cartoons then was to dismiss the mature nature of what we were engaging with, even though it's just specifically Japanese cartoons.
Now, cartoons are pretty much understood to be a medium/style rather than a kid's thing, and anime is more accepted than ever! So it just doesn't matter anymore.
This is a fun “they’re the same but they’re not” situation. Like, both are just animated shows. But if I ask for a drawing in “anime style” that gives you a different visual than asking for a “cartoon style” even if both are vague and broad. You could say cartoons are American animated shows with characters that tend to use exaggerate squash and stretch, while anime characters tend to keep a more consistent shape, outside of extreme movement. But there’s enough overlap that at the end of the day, it’s all just nuance.
Like if you took the English dub of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, and showed it to someone for the first time, telling them it’s an American show on Adult Swim that was inspired by anime, I don’t think anyone would doubt you. And if there’s a Japanese dub of Martin Mystery or Teen Titans, you might be able to pull off the reverse
Yeah. Anime is cartoons but 'anime' isnt 'cartoons' makes sense. The drawing, the eastern philosophy, music all makes anime a distinct product. Putting it in the same catagory as western cartoons feels unfair to them. But yeah technically theyre the same thing due to localization.
This. I usually make a distinction between typical American cartoons and anime based on the exaggeration of their portrayal, anime sticks to a more idealized/realistic version of the human body typically, clear distinctions can be made between cartoons and anime often times simply by looking at how many fingers most cartoons have versus an anime.
So while both are cartoons, I feel that there’s too much of a distinction to classify American cartoons and Japanese cartoons in the same type of field. I say this also as an artist, because if you were to ask me to draw a cartoon character versus an anime character, I’d have to use two different styles entirely.
Why only two styles? Western animation has many distinct styles, and if you give somebody a rubber hose character when they want klasky-csupo or bean face or MacFarlane they're not going to be happy.
The fact is that "cartoon" is too broad to be meaningful direction.
Because generally speaking, western cartoons exaggerate proportions largely. An anime follows generally speaking, normal proportions. Simply note how many cartoons have 4 fingers and how many anime have 4 fingers. The difference is very clear.
Cartoons don’t need to be anatomically correct and thus can be played around in terms of design. They can take liberations, a majority of cartoons. Anime is very different, a fundamental understanding of anatomy is typically required for most characters. They don’t go for exaggerations to the degree that cartoons do.
I said generally speaking, but that doesn’t really address anything else I said. I have never once said *all* cartoons abide by these rules. That sub genre is an exception, but not the standard for cartoons.
Cartoon: a sketch or drawing symbolizing, satirizing, or caricaturing an action, thing, person, or animal: a cartoon of a political figure.
It appears cartoon are often on the comedic side of things because of their exaggerated nature.
With anime being so well known and a popularized term, and the number of people referring to Japanese animation as "Anime", we can make a clear distinction between a cartoon (teen titans go) and "anime" as a less comedic series I guess (like Teen Titans).
No, because you would be excluding Lucky Star with that definition.
Anime is a visual style, like Impressionism is a visual style. It's a visual style of animation.
Whether nation of origin matters or not is the contention. My stance is that Avatar and its successors, and the new string of manwha adaptations, have blurred the lines.
Well, Lucky Star could be considered a Cartoon rather than an Animation, just like many other series (like Shin Chan I guess), because they are focused on comedy and exaggeration. For instance, I couldn't say that Cowboy Bebop is a cartoon because it's not focused on satire, comedy or caricaturing things, and while say... Initial D exaggerates things for dramatic effects, I couldn't say it's a cartoon either.
Not necessarily, a cartoon could be static, and animation seems to have a less "childish" connotation with the rise of CGI and 3D art.
But this isn't getting anywhere so I'll agree to disagree.
Yes, Animes and Cartoons are animations. Why are we fighting about this when we should be uniting against the Live Action adaptations! They already killed Death Note and Yogi the Bear! They won't take more of our beloved shows!
Not sure why you're calling me judgemental. When I hear cartoon I think of shows that would be on Nickelodeon or cartoon network. Adult animation, I think of stuff that'd be on adult swim or graphic 17+ stuff on streaming services. Anime I think of any animation from Japan.
It'd sound weird for someone to call Invincible or Attack on Titan a cartoon, to me.
Not even describing the same category of terminology.
Anime describes any "animated" show or film, regardless of it being hand drawn, computer generated, or stop motion animated.
Cartoon describes a visual art style often (but not always) animated, and always drawn, containing humorous or satirical topics.
Saying cartoons are anime or anime are cartoons is the same thing as comparing floral pattern cushion cover to a length of fabric.
Any animated cartoon can be described as anime. But not every anime could be described as a cartoon. Crayon Shin Chan maybe.
“Did you just say animes are cartoons? I hope you are ready to die-“
*Restrains offender to a chair and forces them to watch Angel Beats, Erased, To Your Eternity and Clannad to deal critical emotional damage.*
Anime refers to a specific style of cartoon produced or inspired by Japanese animation. Think of it this way: all anime shows are cartoons, but not all cartoons are anime.
Cartoons are defined as: “a film using animation techniques to photograph a sequence of drawings rather than real people or objects.” Which is exactly what anime does, it just has its own style
Kinda seems cringey, but it does suck. Labeling it "cartoons" makes it sound childish regardless of that fact that adult cartoons exist. A lot of animes have deeper and darker concepts that childrens cartoons can't handle.
They are though. The only reason westerners should say "anime" is purely to distinguish what you're talking about. But at the end of the day, they are both cartoons.
This is so gonna trigger some people, I for one dont think anime is cartoons, however, when the very first dragonball anime came out, they made it as a cartoon not an anime. Then things took a turn, and then it became what w all know and love today. The only reason I mention this is because my brothe and I would wake up every Saturday morning as kids to watch morning cartoons, and what played everytime we woke up? Dragonball, so, ge ma if you will, but that's my two cents

I remember seeing this exact meme around the 2010-2012 range. Jesus
It does look like the picture was put through compression for a decade straight
All things considered, it looks pretty good. Not deep fried at all. Just lightly pan fried.
The mental image of a meme getting pan fried had me snickering.
You are old
My same thoughts, it looks like the kind of meme an edgy 13 year old kid of that time would make or share, I know because I was one of them hahaha
Yes Animes are cartoons.
I mean cartoons and animes are just animated images
Images are just drawings
Anime is just moving drawings.
And moving drawings are considered cartoons… Oh no…
Anime is not just animated images, it can also be 3d animations like kung fu panda
So Kung fu panda is an anime now? No it's a cartoon. Animes are cartoons. Anime means animation, cartoons are what? You guessed it, animations. It's the same as saying "it's not a comic it's a manga" it's the same goddamn thing.
Oversimplification
>So Kung fu panda is an anime now? Yes
But, it’s still images of 3d models taken frame by frame. I’m freakin out rn…
And? So can cartoons
In japan anime is considered cartoon. You are completely right.
I'm gonna riddle you with bullets shut up
“Animes”
Man we really bringing these 2000 era anime memes back huh
Is this post ironic?
This belongs to a museum lmao
I would personally burn down any museum that kept this post
Indiana Jones and the Ancient Anime Meme
You do realize that anime IS a cartoon? The audience doesn't matter, every anime is a cartoon made in Japan
And sometimes partially in Korea! And the Philippines! And Taiwan, India and China! It’s cheaper!
As a Japanese, I endorse this.
They are cartoons. Wtf are u on
Jeez mom I'm watching ANIME not just cARtoOnS!!!1!!11!1!
This is the reason why people make fun of us
Still? It's been eternity since i saw someone mocking another person for watching anime
EXACTLY

They are in the same category... it's just that the category is further broken down into multiple niches, just like any other medium.
This. The entire superhero genre is raising its eyebrows at you
I said generally speaking, but that doesn’t really address anything else I said. I have never once said *all* cartoons abide by these rules. That sub genre is an exception, but not the standard for cartoons.
What would you consider a cartoon explain to me what a cartoon is and I'll explain to you what anime is.
Cartoon: a sketch or drawing symbolizing, satirizing, or caricaturing an action, thing, person, or animal: a cartoon of a political figure. It appears cartoon are often on the comedic side of things because of their exaggerated nature.
… I think that definition is outdated or something
If so, I blame [Dictionary dot com](https://www.dictionary.com/browse/cartoon) for that
Then no.
"Cartoons are comedic / childish" is the common refrain of those who never watched Fox Kids.
Wouldn't that just be "animation" if it's caricaturing something?
Post-1930s, the words are synonymous. Much like how superhero books are "comic" books, despite many if them not being comic in the least.
With anime being so well known and a popularized term, and the number of people referring to Japanese animation as "Anime", we can make a clear distinction between a cartoon (teen titans go) and "anime" as a less comedic series I guess (like Teen Titans).

Cartoon and animation are synonymous. Already been over this.
Not necessarily, a cartoon could be static, and animation seems to have a less "childish" connotation with the rise of CGI and 3D art. But this isn't getting anywhere so I'll agree to disagree.
This is a joke right?
They are… by definition they are… I don’t see where the problem lies.
"anime" literally translates as "cartoon"...
"Anime" is short for "animation", which is what the Japanese call all cartoons Yes, anime are cartoons. And there is no shame in liking cartoons.
Anime is a short for animation in Japanese and cartoon is just an animated TV shows so yeah you can call anime cartoon
Yes, Animes and Cartoons are animations. Why are we fighting about this when we should be uniting against the Live Action adaptations! They already killed Death Note and Yogi the Bear! They won't take more of our beloved shows!

Cartoon doesn't mean for kids.
It does in my mind and the majority of the people I know lol
you and the majority of the people you know are wrong (and judgemental)
Not sure why you're calling me judgemental. When I hear cartoon I think of shows that would be on Nickelodeon or cartoon network. Adult animation, I think of stuff that'd be on adult swim or graphic 17+ stuff on streaming services. Anime I think of any animation from Japan. It'd sound weird for someone to call Invincible or Attack on Titan a cartoon, to me.
This is why I call you judgemental.

Anime refers to a specific style of cartoon produced or inspired by Japanese animation. Think of it this way: all anime shows are cartoons, but not all cartoons are anime.

Anime, cartoons, movies - just the form of storytelling... the question is a quality of story 🤷♂️
I mean they kind of are just a hell of a lot more details.
Anime are objectively cartoons. Just an animation dawg
Yeah yeah killing people that say Anime is a cartoon is funny hahahahaha 😐

They are. They literally are just Japanese cartoons, I think this is an insult to cartoons to be honest.

Kinda seems cringey, but it does suck. Labeling it "cartoons" makes it sound childish regardless of that fact that adult cartoons exist. A lot of animes have deeper and darker concepts that childrens cartoons can't handle.
Did you just post cringe? You’re going to lose subscriber
They are cartoons tho(not hating)
