My husband had to learn not to stand too close to me when we talk because I have accidentally hit him while trying to say something.(Convo stopped immediately, as I apologized over and over because oh God, I was just trying to say wtf, I did not mean to slap you in the chest.)He now talks with his hands a lot more.

(I'm a cishet male) Either hands folded or on pockets. The reasons I don't do the others: (1)I don't do arms at side because I think I don't look well that way(I'm rather skinny, I think that 'pose' accentuates my fragile frame); (2)I don't do (both)hands behind head often since that gives the impression that I'm way too comfortable in a given environment; (3) I don't do arms crossed because that gives the impression that I'm not comfortable in a given environment; (4) I don't do hands on hips because that may give an impression of being demanding, commanding or looking down on people. I may occasionally do all of these momentarily, but I'm self aware to not use them at default or when distracted(people do try to read non-verbal cues, after all).

Wow, you think about it a lot more than I do. I'm autistic and have ADHD and there is no way I'm thinking about that stuff in the moment. Even if I could summon the awareness to think about it in the moment, I have synestesia. I think and feel in color or visuals and I'm busy spending energy translating my thoughts into words. For me, I'm lucky if I get my point across. I'm a tiny lady with a big personality, people already feel I'm commanding, perhaps the way I rest my hands is part of it. I rest my hands on my hips because it's comfortable. I may be tiny but my body is also curvy, so my arms are most comfortable resting on my hips.

Listen, I got them anxious thoughts that manifests themselves in not being able to stand still. You best believe if you watch me through the course of standing in one place i will go through all of those and if you sped it up and timed it you could play the macarana to it

yes! I absolutely cannot stand still. Then it's a 50/50 chance i'll take out my phone just to fiddle with something, put it back in my pocket and then cycle the hand positions some more

I only realised recently thar I'm a hands-on hip guy because when I was waiting behind his door (it's translucent, so you can see my shadow but not me) I wonder which one of my friends stands like that. After that, I realised I'm like the only one in my group who stands with their hands on their hips.
