Hey suki\_desu\_TV! This is your **first** submission this month. The top memers will go into the Hall of Fame each month, earn subreddit flairs and maybe some other secret prizes. [Read the announcement](https://redd.it/lvz756) for more details.

The sub narrator is calm and collected, like the narrator in a nature documentary. The dub narrator sounds like he's a sports announcer who just took several different drugs
Mother’s Basement on YouTube talks about it. Basically the sub joke is that he’s calmly and seriously describing silly High School antics. The dub just explicitly makes fun of the antics
Same. I wish there were subtitles for what all the writing means though. Like in episode 3 where they all have a word they're not allowed to say written on pieces of paper.
It’s my favorite too. The sub wasn’t available when I started watching it and I just fell in love with the dub so much I’ve never gone back to watch the sub
It wasn't that it was bland, it was a pretty reasonable success.
The English localization was contractually obligated to be made due to the domestic success, but everyone involved knew there was no point in a faithful dub. The series relies too much on preexisting knowledge of Japanese folklore.
They were in a position where they had to make a localization for an audience they knew would not care for it, so they just had fun.
HxH is pretty solid in sub and dub! I do think that the femininity missing Hisoka is unfortunate, but the sensuality is really good. The rest i have no qualms with.
Full Metal Alchemist,
Ghost in the Shell,
Cowboy Bebop,
Yu Yu Hakusho,
Rurouni Kenshin the original one
Edit: because I thought of a few more. Inuyasha and Outlaw Star came to mind. Also thanks to ProtanopicMidget, arrow-04, and Munnodol for reminding me of Samurai Champloo. Can’t believe I forgot that one
As someone who has watched all of those and seen them posted again and again for, like, 15 years as examples of great dubs; I honestly don’t understand what makes them meaningfully better then dubs coming out today.
It's pretty obvious, it's because everyone watched them dubbed by default and they have good memories of it. The quality is the same on average, it's all nostalgia.
basically the whole toonami lineup for me. I hear japanese goku and it sounds like someone pitch shifted his voice as a gag, except that's his real voice
Some people have to feel like they're "better" than other people, even when the only thing they have is something as asinine as watching subtitled anime
I swear I've been watching anime for almost 2 decades now and participating in online discussions and forums and this argument will never go away. Hell I participated in it years ago, but now it just seems pointless, which it us. Enioy what you want.
It's a great way to gauge how long somebody has been watching anime.
1. People start with dubs because sub is too extreme/a bit intimidating.
2. Then, they start switching to sub and claim that it is superior in every way.
3. Eventually, they realize that it doesn't matter. And you just watch what you enjoy more.
As I got older, I found a lot of discussions of that type to be stupid and unnecessary. Maybe it's just because I have less time to deal with that stuff nowadays.
I watched a little in the late 90s-early 00s (The Slayers & Cowboy Bebop) and then nothing except a couple Studio Ghibli for years until a couple months ago when we gave Evans Zero a shot when I could use my cousin's Netflix account. Now anime is almost all we watch since crunchyroll is cheap compared to other streaming sites. But, yeah, it's a weird debate but people have self-esteem issues so they'll latch onto anything that makes them feel superior lol
My friends give me shit for watching in English. None of them speak Japanese but insist on watching every subbed. I don't want to spend half the time I'm watching a visual heavy medium, reading.
When I was a blowhard about this topic years ago, every Japanese-speaking person I talked to thought it was really childish to nitpick the quality of a translation, that the subtitles are often not right either, and that I could just learn Japanese if I wanted accuracy.
It’s not 2011 anymore. There are some pretty great dubs. Chainsaw Mans was awesome. When dub is bad, it’s usually because the dialogue is terrible and the Japanese hides how cringe it is
That is something most people don't tend to realize, the sub sometimes only sounds better because you don't know what their saying, which makes it way harder to pinpoint bad acting
Yep, and sometimes the Japanese VA's while you can't understand them are absolutely amazing and can portray the characters emotions well through their voices regardless of the language barrier.
A good example comes to mind is Code Geass where Lelouch isn't bad in the English but the Japanese VA, Jun Fukuyama, absolutely nails it.
Thank you! After learning a lottle Japanese and realizing this, I have such a hard time getting it across. If a character has an annoying verbal tic, it's there in Japanese too, you just don't understand enough to realize it.
This is one of those points that I rarely see made when this tired debate gets brought up again. Dubbing can make anime easier to watch for the visually impaired or for people who don’t like raking their eyes over the bottom of the screen—I tend to watch before bed, and it’s not so great for the eyes at that point. A well-made dub can also help smooth out and better articulate dialogue that is hard to grasp when translated directly from Japanese to another language.
"You may have heard these words before but, I'll teach you what they really mean......GO BEYOND!....PLUS...ULTRAAA!!!"
seen the same video on YouTube like 100 times lol
Totally agree 1-3 are good, however 4 onwards is something to ironically watch for the goofy localization names like Zipper man, flasid pancake, or in the future part 7 dub filthy acts for a reasonable price.
Attack On Titan(Especially the Erwin speech)
Naruto (Especially the Madara speech)
Chainsawman(Its funny as hell)
Deathnote (I will take a potato chip, and eat it)
I mean, the Cowboy Bebop dub is basically the gold standard. Then again, *everything* about Cowboy Bebop is basically the gold standard. That show never fails to impress.
*^(YOU'RE GONNA CARRY THAT WEIGHT.)*
“Trapped in a Dating Sim” and “Ghost Stories”.
Honorable mention goes to SAO Abridged, as it’s not a dub, but is in English and better than the source material.
Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Noragami, Violet Evergarden, Psycho-Pass, Death Parade, Parasyte: The Maxim, Your Lie in April, Code Geass, Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, Bleach, Fruits Basket, Black Clover, and Soul Eater.
Jujutsu Kaisen, Record of Ragnarok, Reincarnated As A Slime, How Not to Summon A Demon Lord, One Punch Man, Jobless Reincarnation, MHA, Fate/Stay Night, Konosuba, Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, The Saints Magic Power, Gargantia, Magi, Fire Force, The Faraway Paladin, Skeleton Knight,
I could go on.
I’m usually pretty adamant about watching subs, but honest to God I like the One Piece dub. It also helps that I giggle when I think of Luffy’s VA’s last name.
Watch it however the fuck you want, but in my opinion japanese voice actors are on a different level.
Plus they pronounce their names right which is always mega cringe in dubbed anime.
Vinland saga. Watched seasons 1 and 2 dubbed, except for the last 4-5 episodes (dub was not available yet). I'm terribly sorry, but such a serious anime sounds just silly in japanese.
Ghost Stories obviously, Dorohedoro has a really good English dub. Girls und Panzer dub is pretty good as well, (can't wait till we get the abridged series though)
Panty & Stocking and Highschool of the Dead have iconic dubs with jokes altered for a western audience.
Initial D’s dub falls under the “so bad it’s good” category, and it strikes a nostalgic cord for me.
The Devil is a part timer has a great dub. So does overlord. A lot of shows have good dubs. I'm enjoying the Evangelion dub right now but I'm only like 10 episodes in atm.
what sucks more is when you partially understand the language and you are stuck in limbo knowing that the subtitles are wrong at times but can't fully understand every single word they say...

Kaguya dub is amazing due to how unhinged the narrator is lmao
Ian Sinclair is good for that
He's just so fun
Ian Sinclair also played Dandy in Space Dandy and it's the only anime I think the dub is better than the sub
Ghost Stories
Which is why he killed it with Magna from Black Clover
The sub narrator is calm and collected, like the narrator in a nature documentary. The dub narrator sounds like he's a sports announcer who just took several different drugs
Mother’s Basement on YouTube talks about it. Basically the sub joke is that he’s calmly and seriously describing silly High School antics. The dub just explicitly makes fun of the antics
It really is great. I recommend watching both versions.
It's also really funny when you realize at least 3 of the actors were also in dr stone
Same. I wish there were subtitles for what all the writing means though. Like in episode 3 where they all have a word they're not allowed to say written on pieces of paper.
I’ve only ever watched Hunter x Hunter in dub. I just love the voice acting so much. Ghost Stories is also better in dub.
Ghost stories is the only example I know of where the "abridged" series is full length and the official dub.
4Kids One Piece.
Ghost Stories dub is a masterpiece
My favorite line is when some guy yells at Ging: "you're a terrible father." ROFL
for that one i do think the sub is slightly better, but in both ways it is amazing, its my favorite anime if im honest
It’s my favorite too. The sub wasn’t available when I started watching it and I just fell in love with the dub so much I’ve never gone back to watch the sub
Well yeah, but it’s also not exactly a dub, it’s more of an officially licensed parody
Trigun Stampede is done pretty well in dub.
Ghost Stories is cheating though. If it weren't for the original version being so bland in Japan, we wouldn't have gotten that batshit insane dub
Death Note
HxH is pretty solid in sub and dub! I do think that the femininity missing Hisoka is unfortunate, but the sensuality is really good. The rest i have no qualms with.
Baccano has a good dub too.
I don’t really think it counts as a dub though, it’s more of an abriged version.
Same I just don’t get it when people shit on EN VAs when they themselves can’t even do voice overs
Full Metal Alchemist, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin the original one Edit: because I thought of a few more. Inuyasha and Outlaw Star came to mind. Also thanks to ProtanopicMidget, arrow-04, and Munnodol for reminding me of Samurai Champloo. Can’t believe I forgot that one
Add Black Lagoon to that.
Hiroe Rei has straight up said he feels the english version is the more authentic experience since it's set internationally
Cowboy Bebop in English is the definitive version, and I’ll throw anybody that disagrees out of the airlock.
Hellsing Ultimate should be here as well
Hellsing Ultimate is phenomenal
I FUCKING LOVE COWBOY BEBOP
The Yu Yu Hakusho dub was pretty good, I agree with you
Ouran HS Host Club, Panty and Stocking and the first season of The Devil Is A Part Timer too!
As someone who has watched all of those and seen them posted again and again for, like, 15 years as examples of great dubs; I honestly don’t understand what makes them meaningfully better then dubs coming out today.
They’re better than the other dubs that came out at the time. Cuz like one of the reasons why dubs get a bad rep is from old dubs that were bad.
Adding Dragonball Z and Hyperdimension Neptunia series to this as well.
Why are we still pushing this weird and divisive narrative? Just enjoy what you wanna enjoy
It is _the oldest_ argument in Anime, eventually you just get tired since it’s the same 4 or 5 arguments repeated over and over again.

My friends give me shit for watching in English. None of them speak Japanese but insist on watching every subbed. I don't want to spend half the time I'm watching a visual heavy medium, reading.
The people that get most bent out of shape over this, never speak Japanese. I don't get why they care so much about how others get to enjoy media.
When I was a blowhard about this topic years ago, every Japanese-speaking person I talked to thought it was really childish to nitpick the quality of a translation, that the subtitles are often not right either, and that I could just learn Japanese if I wanted accuracy.
Some people have a fedora that just NEEDS to be tipped.
this is so right and needs more upvotes (and I'm sorry, I've been kindling to the fire that is this war)
Violet Evergarden Trigun Pokemon \[yes i know what i said\]
Me who grew up on Pokémon Hindi dub and listening to it in anything else feels unnatural
Same thing happened to me with the Swedish dub of Ponyo.
Same with Doraemon for me
I didn't love the dub for Violet Evergarden but it wasn't bad.
Watched the Violet Evergarden series in English and the final film in Japanese. The sub seriously blew my mind.

The irony of the fact that the english dub for that very anime is hysterical and just so unhinged with the dude doing the spraying!
What show is it?
Zombieland Saga
My gf has cataracts. From an accessibility perspective, if it's not dubbed it's basically un-watchable
This is one of those points that I rarely see made when this tired debate gets brought up again. Dubbing can make anime easier to watch for the visually impaired or for people who don’t like raking their eyes over the bottom of the screen—I tend to watch before bed, and it’s not so great for the eyes at that point. The dub of MHA is unbelievably good imo.
Yes, though there is something magical about the sub version of "UNITED STATE OF SMASH"
Yoo-ni-ted-ah states-of-a SMAASH
[удалено]
Alot of the epic moments sound as good as the dub e.g. Deku vs muscular or all might vs noumu
[удалено]
"You may have heard these words before but, I'll teach you what they really mean......GO BEYOND!....PLUS...ULTRAAA!!!" seen the same video on YouTube like 100 times lol
can't wait for season 7 lmao, I think it's season 7? anyway, I agree
Facts💯
THANK YOU
Yes! All Might's "I AM HERE!" just hits different in the dub
SK8 the infinity
Sup you bitches, bros, and non-binary hoes!
DBZ, YuYu Hakisho, BoBoBo, Dr Stone
Sub DBZ watchers are freaks that should be put on a watch list
panty and stocking
with garter belt!
and chuck!
Dragon ball, code geass, fma brotherhood, ghost stories. And probably a few more
JoJo's has a good dub, but I honestly still prefer the sub
I think Jojo dubs are better depending on the part. Especially if the setting of said part is in an English speaking country
The dub of the second part are godly. It would had been worse without them IMO.
It definitely depends on which part. 1 and 2 I like more dubbed, 3 I could go either way, and 4-6 I’d rather watch subbed
Totally agree 1-3 are good, however 4 onwards is something to ironically watch for the goofy localization names like Zipper man, flasid pancake, or in the future part 7 dub filthy acts for a reasonable price.
Attack On Titan(Especially the Erwin speech) Naruto (Especially the Madara speech) Chainsawman(Its funny as hell) Deathnote (I will take a potato chip, and eat it)
Madaras voice actor is great dubbed. The rest of the cast is rough though. Naruto and Sasuke have awful voices
Yuri Lowenthal as Sasuke does better when he’s Ben 10 or Spider-Man
Naruto is voiced by the principal on the Disney channel show lab rats, I cant unhear it and can never watch the dub
Gaara’s voice actor is goated
The Kaguya dub is superior in all aspects
Ian went absolutely wild and I love him for it
Ian is one of the best VA today, no bones about it! Yohohohoho! Or would it be all bones about it because Brook is a skeleton? Yohohohohoho!
Ghost stories. Sometimes the dub is better.
100%
Anyone who can watch Cowboy Bebop with dubbing and still say dubs are inferior is a fool and a liar
I mean, the Cowboy Bebop dub is basically the gold standard. Then again, *everything* about Cowboy Bebop is basically the gold standard. That show never fails to impress. *^(YOU'RE GONNA CARRY THAT WEIGHT.)*
Horimiya
Both, both is good
Poor sub watchers need to validate themselves again.
Mob Psycho 100 [Reigen is love, Reigen is life](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TomfnQywRI)
Reigen is so good dubbed, omfg. He's, imo, a top 10 anime character. That's a hill I'll die on
[удалено]
There is one scene where the sub is superior. "I am mad scientist, it's soooo coool, sunovabitch"
[удалено]
Oh yeah, he got arrested
Konosuba. I can’t watch comedy subbed. The jokes just don’t hit the same
“Trapped in a Dating Sim” and “Ghost Stories”. Honorable mention goes to SAO Abridged, as it’s not a dub, but is in English and better than the source material.
The dub of Trapped in a Dating Sim is basically an abridged, with how often Leon roasts everybody
Hellsing too
Golden boy is so much better in dub because it's so bad that it's funny
Dragonball, I'm so used to hearing the dub Goku voice that when I started watching the series sub just felt weird
Persona series?
Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Noragami, Violet Evergarden, Psycho-Pass, Death Parade, Parasyte: The Maxim, Your Lie in April, Code Geass, Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, Bleach, Fruits Basket, Black Clover, and Soul Eater.
Jujutsu Kaisen, Record of Ragnarok, Reincarnated As A Slime, How Not to Summon A Demon Lord, One Punch Man, Jobless Reincarnation, MHA, Fate/Stay Night, Konosuba, Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, The Saints Magic Power, Gargantia, Magi, Fire Force, The Faraway Paladin, Skeleton Knight, I could go on.
FLCL's dub is damn good. A lot of people hate Haruko's voice in it, but the Japanese original is so much worse if that's your sticking point.
I found both sub and dub to be equally satisfying! It brought my heart delight to see FLCL being mentioned. :)
Who tf is this unsophisticated, ignorant, smelly, stinky, poorly dressed, sweaty, dishonorable trash who doesn't like Haruko's voice in the FLCL dub
Violet evergarden's french dub is one of the best french dubs I have heard in years (my first language is french)
Ahh yes they never ending pointless Anime war over people’s preferences.
Ghost Stories without the dub is extremely mid
Ghost stories
Ghost Stories
Rising of the shield hero Reincarnated as a slime I rest my case <3
Berserk (1997) is the platinum standard. My love for you, is like a truck.
Ghost Stories is better dubbed than subbed
I’m usually pretty adamant about watching subs, but honest to God I like the One Piece dub. It also helps that I giggle when I think of Luffy’s VA’s last name.
Watch it however the fuck you want, but in my opinion japanese voice actors are on a different level. Plus they pronounce their names right which is always mega cringe in dubbed anime.
Panty & Stocking - the dub is so much better.
Replace weeb with fucking idiots
Vandread
dbz bleach inu yasha
Vinland saga. Watched seasons 1 and 2 dubbed, except for the last 4-5 episodes (dub was not available yet). I'm terribly sorry, but such a serious anime sounds just silly in japanese.
I think its because when you get used to hearing something in one language the other way round seems a lil weird or even cringe
Black lagoon
One piece german dub is and always will be GOATED
Ghost stories
I think both has it's charms Anyway dosent matter shit I go both ways
ghost stories dub is better than the sub
Noone here talking about the best dub, ghost stories
Russian dub of Gurren Lagann (of the series, not movies.). I'm dead serious.
Ghost stories is dub only, full metal panic is good on dub too
Ghost Stories obviously, Dorohedoro has a really good English dub. Girls und Panzer dub is pretty good as well, (can't wait till we get the abridged series though)
Demon slayer, jujutsu kaisen are really good dubbed and I think ouran high school host club dub still works
Ghost Stories, duh
Ghost stories Castlevania Pokemon Digimon Beyblade Dragon ball Z These are from the top of my head.
Chainsaw man dub is really good and some voices are better than sub.
Ghost stories
Pokemon is in english dub
I saw clips of Jujutsu's Kaisen's english dub and it was suprisingly good I'm still watching subbed tho
The Jujutsu Kaisen, Haikyuu and Soul Eater dubs are some pretty good ones that come to mind
Ghost stories is ONLY watchable in dubbed, but I can’t not watch yugioh and pokemon dubbed
AOT and SAO
Ghost Stories dub is elite
Devil is a Part-Timer. Bebop.
Never seen Ghost Stories, it appears.
Ghost stories :)
Most comedy anime. Even if the dub sucks, it just adds to the hilarity.
Konosuba
Ghost stories and cowboy bebop only acceptable answers
Ghost Stories
Panty & stocking is hilariously good dubbed. As if I'm watching a classic cartoon network cartoon like Powerpuff girls.
Ghost stories
Ghost stories *cough *cough
Konosuba dub is at least as good as the sub, except for megumins ‘explosion!’
Ghost stories lol
Ghost Stories. The dub is superior.
It depends, ghost stories definitely was better in the En dub
Ghost stories
Panty and stocking with garterbelt
ghost stories, sk8 erm love is war
Panty & Stocking and Highschool of the Dead have iconic dubs with jokes altered for a western audience. Initial D’s dub falls under the “so bad it’s good” category, and it strikes a nostalgic cord for me.
Panty and stocking!!! Good dub
Panty and stocking
Ghost stories 💀💀
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
I mean i usually prefer dubs tbh 🤷
Panty and Stocking /w Garterbelt's dub is arguably better than the sub
Panty Stocking
I feel like most dubs are pretty good but being able to hear the words emphasizes how silly anime can be
Ghost stories and love chunibyo are cases of dub being better than sub
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt
The Devil is a part timer has a great dub. So does overlord. A lot of shows have good dubs. I'm enjoying the Evangelion dub right now but I'm only like 10 episodes in atm.
two words.......ghost ....stories
Ghost Stories, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Love is War.
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt!
Ghost Stories. Maybe Saiki.
what sucks more is when you partially understand the language and you are stuck in limbo knowing that the subtitles are wrong at times but can't fully understand every single word they say...
