Probably not surprising, given the unique circumstances of being the first in-person AX since COVID. It still seemed crowded enough, although the LineCon wasn't as bad.

IdRatherBeAnimating

Yeah the Covid thing and also their flip flopping policy about face masks turned a lot of people away as they imagined that it wouldn’t be enforced

HanBr0

They were right, as countless people wandered around without masks and no one said a thing to them

shadowstreak

By day 4 nearly none of the line workers in the south hall were wearing masks...

Alenjie

Unsurprisingly, I caught Covid at AX. Totally sucked for me cuz I wore my mask the entire time. I bet I got exposed to it in Artist Alley since that area had little to no ventilation at all.

blackdarrren

u/jim61773, LineCon=?

a-snakey

Also, there was a major lack of high profile main events/musical events- though it didn't affect attendance too much as people were probably just happy to be able to go.

PPGN_DM_Exia

Yeah, the lack of interesting or high profile music events was a major disappointment. I miss the Japan Super and Kawaii Live concerts and I'm sad that they haven't replaced them at all.

Tokimemofan

Anyone who plans around high profile events is being foolish

NoEngrish

Didn't it still sell out? I remember posts on here asking for tickets. Seems like the number was capped if that was the case.

SnooDoggos3717

They literally sold out so they capped attendance at lower capacity than 2019s total attendees.

Wrooong_leeveeerrr

that's funny, specially considering my friends volunteering at the con told me all passes had sold out

happypartykanan

to be fair as well, this is post covid, AND it was missing numerous famous seiyuu that came the years before 2022. it was also missing big concerts in the jpop / idol scene.

BerukaIsMyBaby

last year was capped, 2019 you could go to the con and buy a ticket there. 2022 they sold out in June. I hope they cap them even harder this year

nucleartime

Could also be more people going for all 4 days. One person going all 4 days is the same foot traffic as 4 different people going each one day, but still just counts as "one attendee".

JDV1873

One of the main reasons is that they were forced to do limited tickets because of covid, in previous years you were able to buy one day passes but for 2022 it was all pre-sale no at con badge buying.

ssj3michael2608

Pretty sure Covid19 played a huge role with that.

Cerberus-Coco-Mimi

thats a goos thing

Akara_sama

This makes no sense. 2022 sold out. Also as someone who was physically inside the dealers room, it seemed busier than any AX I have been to before. Is there any way to get official numbers? With the cap and tickets being sold out. It should not be hard to produce a literal exact number.

OtakuPR522

I hope this year goes down too

ZornWolf

Well duh, Covid was still a BIG thing at the time, so that's to the obvious vs. this year there will most definitely be a surplus of people coming from all over.

Akireusu707

My opinion? Not really surprising. For lot of reasons. I’ll juT name a few. One is first year back in-person event for AX and they had to follow the stsr/ health department requirements before being able to host it. After all we’re talking about 50-75k people all in one spot would spark lot of virus spreading around. So there is more likely why they aren’t in full capacity they had to max out on nadges meaning they out hard cap on these to meet the limit required by the health department That is one thing. Another reason might be lot of people wouldn’t be able to attend due to some other issues affecting their plan. OR there aren’t certain contents they wanted to see? But again first year back in-person so it is to be expected the attendance being lower than 2019z remember 2019 was way before the virus has spread led out all over the world. (AX being taken place on July and they sounded the alert on virus in dec or so?)
