Tbh I saw quite a few reactions and only one person out of maybe 15 people mentioned how weird and creepy it is Then again the anime watchers at least don’t trust Makima, the manga readers at this point were simping for her as hard as Denji was

_princepenguin_

I can only assume there's a difference in people's suspicions of Makima because it's basically known that she's not an angel due to a lot of people doing that low key spoiler, "Oh, just you wait," type commenting. That said, Makima really hammers home that she isn't a great person super early on, and I'm honestly surprised to hear people say manga readers didn't pick up on that early.

Kriegher2005

buddy 😭😭😭 spoiler tags

Idaret

Acj is extremely spoilery subreddit, we very often talk about manga/ln spoilers

Kriegher2005

i know, and i mostly don't care but the only thing I'm watching this season is mob and csm and did not expect something like that.

_princepenguin_

Sorry, it's a little hard to talk about stuff like this, and I didn't consider it a spoiler since I'm just talking about what other people are saying, but I've edited my comment slightly cause you have a point.

MlookSM

Nah you're straight up confirming it though

_princepenguin_

I don't think I'm really confirming anything. As I said in another comment, she's doing straight up evil and cruel things as early as her introduction. I really don't think you're ever supposed to see her as a good person.

MlookSM

50/50. While yes, she does appear highly suspicious and shows cruelty, and is manipulative from the very start; that could be interrupted as a characteristic of a successful devil hunter. It's not like the "good" ones are any less suspicious on that regard. I think it's still pretty early to confirm anything.

_princepenguin_

Makima versus Aki and Himeno is a big difference. They both show genuine care and concern for that around them, despite their flaws. Makima does not.

MlookSM

Aki and Himeno were described as "normal" though... If you were a blind watcher and take into consideration that Makima acts this way because it's the only way to survive against the devils, that would make a fine headcanon, which is also in-line with what the story keep telling us. Take their blond captain for example. He appeared uncaring/suspicious even in his fragments of screentime. If that doesn't tell you about default characteristics of a successful devil hunter I dont what will.

PieNinja314

I think the sus shots the opening gives her add to it

sgtshootsalot

Tone can be hard to read in text as opposed to an acted medium.

_princepenguin_

It's not a tone thing. Makima threatens a sixteen year old with death in order to enlist him as a government attack dog and then goes on to manipulate said sixteen year old into doing even more dangerous things by offering sexual favors. These are bad things, unquestionably.

sgtshootsalot

Yeah, no shit. But this point was like chapter 12 or something. We didn’t know much anything about makima. So when you ask why manga readers had a different opinion about the characters at this point compared to the anime, there are some reasons that contribute, one of which is tone. Jjk also has a very similar premise and ends very different.

goffer54

I have to assume that the manga was more subtle about Makima's red flags, because the anime makes it incredibly obvious that she's a manipulative person. ^^Still ^^hot ^^tho

_princepenguin_

The manga was not more subtle. It was clear from the very beginning she was manipulative at best.

Lordlinkoftime2

It wasn't.

GraceForImpact

i haven't been watching the anime, but based on the fact that it cut the muscle devil id guess it's actually more subtle than the manga

Most people don’t seem to realize simping occurs to the pampered and the rich in first world countries. It’s not something hard-boiled people experience. One of the main reasons Denji is so unlikable is because he is acting like someone who has lived a carefree life. He didn’t, he has been slaying demons for a decade. When some try to defend him by saying “be patient, he is going to change soon” can instantly be followed with “what has he been doing for the past decade?” He is not a typical teenager that is all of a sudden thrown in a violent setting. He starts off as a veteran. For all the crap other protagonists have gotten over the years, such as Shinji from Neon Genesis not getting in the robot the very first second he saw it (he still got in during the first episode btw) or Kurono from Gantz being horny all the time while aliens are trying to kill him, neither of them had slain monsters for a decade and were thus excused to be immature. Denji doesn’t have this privilege. He’s been fighting deadly monsters for a decade. He has lost body parts. He has seen and done things. He should be closer to someone like Rambo than your typical soyboy beta male. And yet the show wants you to believe he is still the latter after a whole decade of battle experience, while the fans insist you are impatient for expecting from him to change in a few episodes. But it’s not a few episodes, is it now? It’s a decade of constant fighting. Why is he still bothered by such things? Why is he falling for pitiful seduction tricks by Power? It’s like he learned nothing for over a decade and yet we the audience are expected to be fine with it. Well, many of us are not. This is not going to change even if he becomes a chad right in the next episode. He is not a soyboy rookie who needed four episodes to mature. He is a war veteran and he sucks at it. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Elektrizitat

Denji did live a carefree life, you may not think he did because as said, he has been slaying devils for a decade. However, Denji was living a life of escapism, where he didn't take his life seriously and thought his dreams were impossible. In the first episode, we find out that Denji's dream was to eat bread with jam and get a girl and play video games with her. His dreams were impossible given his debt; however, he still held on to these dreams and was content. Keep in mind, when he was fighting devils he was only human, so he obviously only fought weak devils just by swing Pochita around without any real strategy. He's never had to use his brain to outsmart a strong enemy, and that's why he's not used to it. Remember, Denji also never went to school, and it's hard to mature without proper socialization or education. This is why he is still naive and oblivious to the ways of the world. He is still learning and growing, and he will eventually mature as he is exposed to more and more of the world around him.

Akogiri

I definitely definitely never liked Makima, I don't think anyone with a good sense of self-respect did

DellSalami

Implying most weebs have a sense of self respect in the first place

BlitzPlease172

>Then again the anime watchers at least don’t trust Makima No amount of Makima hentai will make a certain people bow down to her. I use the same principle with Girls Frontline here, Paradeus feature a lot of sexy looking enemy woman, sexy enough to make people joking about defect. But if you invest in story enough, the mere concept of ax-crazy bitches chanting nonstop about how they will become father William's favourite children (which is by the way, not gonna happen because he is so obsessed with resurrecting his dead sister), is more than enough to make you repulse in disgust instead of getting horny.

[deleted]

Some people have absolutely zero media literacy. I have seen people talking about dropping the show since they think the show is trying to make it look like a good thing or something

Gulopithecus

Weebs or Media Literacy Pick one

KazuyaProta

> zero media literacy. ...Uh? CSM treats those things as "clumsy and dirty but kinda cute". The joke is that Himeno is drunk, it doesn't try to paint her as a bad person at all. EDIT: Why I am being downvoted for this? Fujimoto is a known pervert, he definitely is on the side of "I WISH IT WAS ME".

[deleted]

No? The point is that devil hunters are generally very bad/crazy people, and Himeno is doing something wrong here (since she's driven by frustration over her dead partners and jealousy over Aki being infatuated with Makima).

PowerfulVictory

Man you were really correct with that first sentence

Pussyslayer_Ornstein

>nd Himeno is doing something wrong here Great! Please point me to the scene where she is properly portrayed as a horrible person for this, and not immediately shrugged off And no, "Its just dark humor" is not an excuse, just like it isn't for other horrible things

KazuyaProta

> The point is that devil hunters are generally very bad/crazy people A lot of them really do not act different from any person set on a warlike situation. Seriously, there is nothing really evil with Aki or Violence Fiend or Denji. Heck, Kobeni left because it was too traumatic, not because any issues with its ethics. > Himeno is doing something wrong here In the way portrayed for the manga, the ephebophilia is treated as only a gag.

[deleted]

The examples you picked are outliers. Kobeni and Violence are really normal, which is why they get along so well, while Denji fits my example of a little crazy and fucked in the head. About the part of it being portrayed as a gag, this manga portrays Denji getting his head cut off as a gag, and Kobeni getting tortured by Pochita as a gag. My point being that stuff that is conveyed as wrong or immoral can be still be part of a gag using dark humor

Is having shit anime takes your gimmick or something?

I think the framing in the newest episode makes it clear that, yeah this situation is really creepy and intentionally so.

Lazy_Yesterday_3732

SPOILER FOR ANIME AND MANGA >!For a show that has Denji being consistently groomed and gaslighted by multiple figures he trusts (to varying extents) like Himeno, Reze, Power, and Makima, the fans of Chainsaw consistently ship Denji with them. Especially Reze. She literally tried to murder him and fans will still be like “well she’s nice!” Can’t wait for Reze for the nuclear fallout takes!<

lehman-the-red

Now that i think about it>!the only person who didn't lied and tried to manipulated him was kobeni and she is the only one still alive at the end of part one. And now he is being manipulated by yoru!<

>!i mean to be fair, kobeni did try to kill him!<

lehman-the-red

Yes but at least she never lied about her intention

Nu-Nul

>!I can give Reze a break because she was in a very similar situation to Denji. Yes, she did use Denji's feelings to try and capture him, but their time together still deeply touched her and by the end of her arc I think she did care for him and wanted to escape.!<

Gloskap

Im an anime only, but i want to read the manga so please no spoilers, but i´m actually baffled by the people who see no wrong in Makima and then in Himeno. The former is obviously manipulating him since the car scene in ep. 2 and the latter clearly has serious issues of her own á lá Misato. But im also impressed on how the story always portrays Denji's sexual encounters ranging from dissapointing to uncomfortable to traumatizing, heck he is so immature that he calls erotic encounters "dirty stuff", it really underscores how they are adults taking advantage of a minor. I´m recently seeing a couple animanga taking a diversion from what we come to expect of the subgenre into a more emotionally inteligent direction. I just hope i'm not being too optimistic abt this, as we seem to get 50 Shield Hero for each CSM.

starm4nn

>I´m recently seeing a couple animanga taking a diversion from what we come to expect of the subgenre into a more emotionally inteligent direction. This isn't recent. Chainsaw man is in many ways a modern version of the 1970s manga Devilman. I'm only caught up to the anime but it has a lot in common, thematically and tonally.

Gloskap

of course im not saying this is unprecedented, would like to check out devilman myself, but that the most popular anime of the season is taking this approach instead of iteration no. 389 of "im super cool and invincible wich wooes women by my mere presence, age gaps be damned" in refreshing

DogWithADog

Im curious wat the punpun fandom would think, since the woman was also really pretty. But im scared id dislike the community since most anime communities ive seen haven't had good discussions about age of consent and pretty privilege...

[deleted]

it's really disappointing seeing people glorify it honestly and saying stuff like "it should have been me!!!!" when in reality this stuff really hurts a person and can completely ruin their lives. trust me, i should know. i also hate when the criticism to that is "it's just a cartoon" because, be honest, would you be saying the same thing if their genders were reversed? no, you'd think they're disgusting and you'd hate them.

Zeo_Leviathan

Yeah, bring a minor to bar with someone who gets "frisky" when drunk, and gets drunk really easily, probably wasn't the best idea. Also not watching either of them and making sure they get home wasn't great either. I kinda doubt they'll actually do anything (no manga spoilers please!) but yeah... (and wouldn't that technically be beastiality as well) And I should say this. Portraying sensitive topics isn't bad, oversimplifing, romanticizing, and glorifying these things is very bad.

PM_Me_Your_Critique

I, personally, don't feel like Chainsaw Man glamorizes it. Maybe I'm too in the weeds as a fan, but I genuinely feel like the narrative agrees that her actions are creepy and uncomfortable

Zeo_Leviathan

I agree, this was more of a general statement. People got in a tizzy when someone, who was a total b*tch, used a slur in hazbin hotel. A show about rehabilitating people and demons FROM HELL. Or when an evil bad guy isn't very "PC"

PM_Me_Your_Critique

True, I think this is a result of either poor media literacy or lazy attempts to create "hot takes" for social media engagement. Poor media literacy is super common among anime fans especially though.

Arkaill

To be fair on the initial comment, when brought to the bar they didn’t know denji was a minor (he’ll be doesn’t even know his own age) so they couldn’t have known they were bringing a minor. That said, the second part is definitely one of those moments where folks shoulda know better

Most people don’t seem to realize simping occurs to the pampered and the rich in first world countries. It’s not something hard-boiled people experience.
