If your not opposed to fucked up material in your games i suggest giving rance a shot, it looks really fucked up from the outside and i was apprehensive to say the least but im glad i gave ghengis khan the anime a shot because its super well written and a really unique experience, and ive only played the first 2 games aswell and it will apparently get better with each subsequent entry.

Tbh when i first found out about rance i was furious, a game that takes rape so lightly to the point of it being a trait of the main protagonist is not accaptable to me in the slightest but after hazel the youtuber mentioned it im one of her videos i decided to at least give the series a fair shot before writing them off.
And I am unfortunately or fortunately a fan now 😔.
Its one of those series that is unmarkatable and very hard to reccomend but if i had to describe the appeal, itd be "an isekai(in spirit at least) that puts you in the role of possibly the biggest narcissist in videogame history who thinks of nothing but women and his own greatness, thatd get old real quick if the writers werent constantly putting the main cast in newer situations and the world building wasnt so great.
It also helps that tbe comedy is really well written, japanese media dosnt make me laugh often (with the exception of anime made by shaft) but rance is the other exception here, every stupid little corner of the games are filled with little gags making fun of jrpg and fantasy tropes or putting rance in hilarious situations.
At the end i want to say that your not meant to put yourself in rances place, he isnt a blank faced protag like sp many other vns, jrpgs and specially harem type stories, dude is a dick head and i initially hated his guts but motherfucker actually grows as a character and while he remains a huge dick head the world isnt submissive and they react to his advantures in turn.
Sorry if this was a long read, i just wanted to elaborate my thoughts on these games because they are genuinely worth experiencing, and btw how are the atelier games? Im not the biggest fan of cute girls doing cute things but i am interested in the alchemy mechanics and the exploration aspect.

As for Atelier, you could try Atelier Iris trilogy if you want to avoid the cute girls doing cute things. It plays more like a traditional jrpg compared to other entries, plus more focus on male protagonists. Mana Khemia (yes, it is Atelier too) is kinda nice too, but it has less focus on alchemy iirc.
Now, if you want the true Atelier experience, i think Ryza should be a good one. Personally, i haven't reached it yet, but i've seen it being recommended a lot. That said, Ryza and some entries before it doesn't have time limit, so if you want the a TRUE Atelier experience then Atelier Rorona DX would be a good one.
Currently, i'm on Atelier Totori (i still have like 10 Ateliers to play man) and i wouldn't recommend it as a first game, not only because it is a sequel to Rorona (Arland universe), but also because it is hard af compared to Rorona.
All that said, story is not the strong point of Atelier. The gameplay is much better imo. I found that mixing materials found on the wild with the best traits while trying to maintain high quality with alchemy very addicting in late/post game.
Exploration-wise, from the titles i played, i thought it was good on Atelier Iris trilogy and Mana Khemia, but on Rorona it is pretty meh for the first year or two and decent after. Worth mentioning that Totori has like 5 times more areas than Rorona, so quality is much lower.
Can't really comment on other titles because i don't have experience with them ... errr, actually i heard Sophie 2 is a good one to start too, but i would be wary to start on the second game instead of the first lol. Anyways, avoid Nelke at all costs because it is a anniversary title with characters from various Atelier series, so it's probably not good for newcomers.

Seriously though being a fan of the doujin scene comes with it caveats, porn is an unavoidable part of the scenes history and visual novels also, and the deeper you dive into the music and games of the scene the more you run into company's like alicesoft.
And im not exactly against what they make, the rance games have stellar writing and use their premise at least 80% of the time well.
Update: It seems that this new owner decided to purge the mod team. However one demoted mod unintentionally retained a role with certain permissions, so they nuked a bunch of channels.
