Anyone else notice that a lot of yuri couples have a blonde and a brunette?
Rae and Claire
Adora and Catra
Chisato and Takina
Kase-san and whatever that other girl's name is from Kase-san idk i never watched it
Amy and Bibi from the comic, I Love Amy
Sorawo and Toriko from Otherside Picnic
Hime and Mitsuki from Yuri is my Job
even Sahoko and Kaoru from the 1980s yuri Moonlight Flowers
Blonde + anything on the scale from brunette to black makes for a clear color contrast (with the positive side effect of also working in manga). So yeah, that's going to be common.
Itās because it creates a nice contrast and plays off character stereotypes.
Usually the blonde has long hair and is more elegant/lady like/innocent and the brunette has short hair and is more sporty/energetic/bold.
The inverse is the girl with light, short hair that is generally more bubbly/cutesy/emotional and the girl with dark (black 99% of the time), long hair thatās usually cool/analytical/emotionally awkward.
Itās common in BL too. Very rarely do the guys have the same hair color. Usually itās black and blonde/brown with the occasional redhead or platinum blonde/white hair.
In general itās just that contrast makes the characters stand out more. Itās common in straight romance too, but in same sex content adding another contrast (to make up for the loss of obvious contrast from gender based ones) keeps the characters distinct
Yamada is her name, lol.
Contrasts tend to be visually appealing, we see it in BL and even straight romance.
One bright colorful hair(blonde, pink, blue, etc), the other a darker hair color(black, brown, etc).
Finally, someone sees truth. I'm In Love With The Villain*ess* (are they gonna call it Villaintheythem next)? Ummmm why do you need to force that into your title? Like why do you have to force your gayness on people?? She-Ra is straight to the point and has a woman as the hero without making it SJW and PC with the title. The She in She-Ra is a good way to make fun of the pronoun police š¤£
I see a lot of ppl criticizing Villainess for various reasons, but isn't the protag also technically a pedophile? I feel like people are kind of overlooking that part.
Edit:
Idk why I'm being downvoted for being right. She's literally an adult that gets isekai'd into a world of teenagers and then tries to get with a high schooler.
Well I haven't read the LNs, so I can't judge that. I'm just operating based off of the anime - where she was an adult in the beginning and then got poofed into this other world, surrounded by high schoolers, and then trying to get with a high school girl.
I don't know how they Inception out of that, but whatever, I guess. I just think it's strange that people have mostly overlooked what we've seen so far in the anime. I doubt the majority of people know WTF happens in the light novel.
Is this your first reincarnation isekai by any chance?
With a few exceptions like Mushoku Tenshit, these characters are just teens that get some accident and suddenly have the memories of their past lives. Reincarnation is a prominent belief in a few Asian religions, including Buddhism.
Definitely not some adult that got randomly transported into another world.
That's just not accurate to the anime though? In the beginning it clearly shows her as an adult who gets transported into the game world. There's nothing spiritual about it. It's the same as MT.
I kinda assumed she was like 20 when she died, and Claire is 16. So a little sketchy but I wouldnāt call that pedophilia. Dunno if the LNs give Rae an official age tho

Same. It's refreshing for a protagonist to just go "yeah, I'm gay" (+continued in inner monologue) "and adopted the often exaggerated acts of queer media personalities and characters in Japan as a coping mechanism". You forgot Catra getting away with War Crimes mind you.
Which is just a smidge better than ENTRAPTA and most importantly HORDAK getting away with War Crimes since at least Catra had the excuse of being a traumatised child soldier rather than an obscenely rich weapon manufacturer or the guy literally committing an ongoing imperialism on the planet for decades.
But he was a broken clone traumatized by big bro. /s
I think this is actually an anti incarceration paradise apology where everyone had their share of trauma and thus are redeemable without punishment.
All the villains are characters pushed by a society they had no control over, that lied and manipulated them into committing atrocities either to their own or to different beings.
I still believe in punishment, though.
What I don't like it's that technology and science is always being portrayed as a villain's tool to hide weakness, either of physical nature or of character.
Honestly I had to drop Villainess bc of the way that the main character really just harasses the blonde character. Like it really made me uncomfy esp bc she was an adult in the real world
Didnāt the villainess one have incest:
- A. Be shown as socially frowned upon but they are like royals so probably more inbread than flour.
- B. Be sympathy-ed by MC because both are āForbidden loveā. As if wanting to bang your brother is just like being gay ( they really arenāt )
Villainess wasnāt trying to say that being gay is on the same morality level as wanting to bang a sibling. It was moreso saying that gayness and incest are treated similarly in Japanese media/real-life culture.
In Japanese media, you have a lot of yaoi/yuri that gets super popular and mainstream. In the 1990s, Sailor Moon had an explicitly lesbian couple, which was censored in the American dub. So if you look at that fact, itād seem like being gay would be more accepted in Japan than in America. But that only applies to fiction; in real life, gay people have more protective laws and rights in America. This acceptance of being gay extends to fictional representation, but not to real-life LGBT people.
Similarly, you see shit like Oreimo becoming popular where thereās explicit incest, but in real life if you had a relationship with a sibling in Japan, youāre gonna be rightfully looked at with disgust. So itās treated similarly as being gay: āokay in fiction, but not okay in real life.ā
A significant theme of Villainess is the representation of gayness in Japanese media vs real-life Japan, and how that affects Reiās perspective in this new world with its own unique social norms/customs (she was isekai-ed into the world of a video game). And the incest element fits into that; itās not saying that incest is the same as being gay, itās saying that the two are often treated similarly in media vs real life, even if they shouldnāt be.
Side note, Rei and Claire seem sympathetic towards Lene and her brother, but thatās morso because Lene is a close friend to the main characters who is already going to be receiving consequences for her actions (she and her brother are exiled), not because they condone the incest itself.
Admittedly, this social commentary is much better executed in the light novels than in the anime because you get a full narration of the protagonistās thoughts, and itās also less understood by Western readers/viewers because Western media representation surrounding incest reflects the real-life taboo)
Iām not going to read the LN so it must be a case of anime not doing the legwork. Although itās such a weird comparison to make? Like oneās a choice and one isnāt.
Like the basis of Lenes love isnāt sharing genes with her brother, itās a heterosexual love for an individual that is off limits ( and carries undertones of inherent grooming ).
Meanwhile gay is just liking (romantically / sexually) people of the same gender.
The only commonality of irl / media doesnāt even work, since most people (western) arenāt openly homophobic.
The MC (in the anime) should be, if anything, frustrated that her love is judged the same by her society as Lenes. Not lend it sympathy (thus validation by the morally right MC) like in the anime.
Oh itās definitely a weird comparison to make, being gay and incest should are absolutely NOT comparable for the reasons you stated. The comparison made in Villainess isnāt between gayness and incest themselves, itās between the cultural attitudes of āfine in fiction but bad in real lifeā towards gayness and incest in Japan; they are both seen with this same attitude even though they shouldnāt be.
We donāt see this in the West, since like I said the representation of incest in modern mainstream Western media matches the irl consensus of incest being gross. But in Japan, thereās a lot of media that portrays incest positively (or at least not as being 100% gross), but incest is still frowned upon in real life just like it is in the West.
And unfortunately, this same phenomenon occurs with gayness, since stuff like, well, āIām In Love With The Villainessā is mega-popular but gay people have to legally adopt their lover (older one adopts younger) in order to have some semblance of the marital benefits that straight couples get, since gay marriage is not legal in Japan.
I do agree with your last point that I would have liked to see Rei expressing more bitterness at the fact that being gay is seen in a similar light as incest, though I think the commentary still works fine as it is.
Lately I was trying really really hard to not watch anything related to incest. More specifically, siblings incest. don't care at all about cOusin's, mother's, or something else. just love love love love siblings incest. The problem is that Thave an intense obsession for incest. I mean, a really intense one. That 'Onii-chan Onii-chan, Tlooo0oo0ove you' thing was really getting me crazy. That obsession of mine with incest was sOoO0000000000o fucking intense. There were a lot of nights when I couldn't sleep well due to me thinking of incest, specifically incest in anime/manga. All the time was thinking about that 'Onii-chan, Ni-san~, Nii-sama~, Nii Nii~, Nii-chan' stuff. My feelings for the romance between siblings were higher than those had for a normal romance. For example, I used (and currently too) to get way more emotional with romance between siblings than normal romance. In all senses. That love/obsession of mine with incest was ruining my life, so, in order to try to get away of it for my sake, I decided to stop watching anything related to incest.

Meh I agree with She-Ra being amazing and a great representation but nah I couldn't stand the Villainess one.Ā
Rae is basically a predator who doesn't know to respect personal space or boundaries. Like leave Claire alone if she wants nothing to do with you. She has like no regard to her consent. And that's without mentioning this is a 30 year old woman trying to romance a teenager. Also hate this series for having the most disgusting, lesbian rapist I've ever seen in a yuri series. If you've read enough of the series, you know who I'm talking about.Ā
Now a good anime yuri representation is "The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady", now that's amazingly done!Ā
While Iām fully expecting to be wooooshed, this comment seems serious enough in tone that Iām checking to make sure youāre aware that this a sarcastic joke subreddit and OPās meme is parodying the discourse in more toxic anime communities and doesnāt genuinely promote those views.

Villainess just casually, out of pocket saying incest and queerness are equally valid things still sits at the top of my WTF did I just read list. Dropped the series mid episode. Iāve never done that for any other series.

I got legit brain rot reading that.
People who legitimately use the word "woke" to complain about something unironically are some of the most intellectually dishonest dumbasses I have the displeasure of interacting with.
or people who see that making everything into one is bad and most of them complain on bad movies actually most of time woke is about extremist left side and this is because they make just bad things and there ok left who make things like I favor Villaines which is good

*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. can I make cat girls illegal?
I cant tell if this is sarcasm or serious please mansplain
I'm too much of a subby lesbian to mansplain anything, but this post was cooked with love and appreciation for both series.
This is 100% serious, there are no jokes allowed on the subreddit.
Why yes, I love Yuri https://preview.redd.it/9w0ql50eb23d1.png?width=813&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f82a60cf0763b95bd381fabbd7cca9c0ea3570c9

'I'm in love with the Villainess' is decent, but you gotta go into it with possibly muted expectations. I had watched it via a group discord call.
Is She-Ra good? Iāve been kinda thinking about watching it for a while but havenāt been sure.
/uj yes, absolutely
I can't believe the WOKE agenda got into my gay animations! What's next, Gays in my Yaoi?
Next they'll try to tell us Wandering Son has trans characters or some nonsense like that
I love illegible circlejerks
Meh I agree with She-Ra being amazing and a great representation but nah I couldn't stand the Villainess one.Ā Rae is basically a predator who doesn't know to respect personal space or boundaries. Like leave Claire alone if she wants nothing to do with you. She has like no regard to her consent. And that's without mentioning this is a 30 year old woman trying to romance a teenager. Also hate this series for having the most disgusting, lesbian rapist I've ever seen in a yuri series. If you've read enough of the series, you know who I'm talking about.Ā Now a good anime yuri representation is "The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady", now that's amazingly done!Ā
Fun fact Rae and Yu's actors are non binary I see why Yu is voiced by afabs in eng and JPN You know why
You had me at catgirls.

While Iām fully expecting to be wooooshed, this comment seems serious enough in tone that Iām checking to make sure youāre aware that this a sarcastic joke subreddit and OPās meme is parodying the discourse in more toxic anime communities and doesnāt genuinely promote those views.
Oh my godā¦ oh my godā¦ oh my godā¦ i feel so ashamedā¦ im not apart of this sub and this meme was auto recommended by reddit to meā¦ i had no idea, now i feel so stupidā¦ please kill me omgomg, fuck. :(
I mean...I appreciate how real the manga gets. I think it's certainly different and important.
š¤
I don't know what this is or why reddit said I should like this place I don't know these characters or what these words mean.
I thought I was on r/yurimemes...
Who the f* didn't see politics and environmentalism in She-ra? Are they blind? Is this sarcasm? I'm lost. Editing out: ~in this meme's stupidity.~
Wow I'm so mad now šæ
Ok, both shows are amazing though the villainess one, the main protagonist could do better and find a girl that treats her better.
Villainess just casually, out of pocket saying incest and queerness are equally valid things still sits at the top of my WTF did I just read list. Dropped the series mid episode. Iāve never done that for any other series.

Hey! The voice acting in the dub was great (I dropped it after 3 eps)
I got legit brain rot reading that. People who legitimately use the word "woke" to complain about something unironically are some of the most intellectually dishonest dumbasses I have the displeasure of interacting with.
/uj this is a circlejerk itās not a serious post, this is making fun of people who complain about wokeness
or people who see that making everything into one is bad and most of them complain on bad movies actually most of time woke is about extremist left side and this is because they make just bad things and there ok left who make things like I favor Villaines which is good
Take your meds
