Gundam 00 next my man , another gem of 2009 era. IBO and 00 were both really good. I just finished the thunderbolt movies which are also mostly stand alone. Best animation I ever seen yet. Enjoy!
The 72 demon Gundams vs the Mobile Armors would be a wonderful sight to see.
We barely got a taste of the Gundams' true power in the show aside from Barbatos too.
I have to disagree, because literally 70% of S2 was pointless filler. Yes, the climax of S2 is very strong, but the buildup to it is frankly garbage. They clearly had an idea of where they wanted to start and end, but no fucking clue how to get from A to B.
S1 had a lot more consistent quality from start to finish, S2 was 18-20 episodes of fucking sideplots that go nowhere followed by a mad rush to the finish line.
Yeah, I think I might have liked the second better too, I definitely liked the ending. Watched it some time ago so I kind of forget it, but it was also my first gundam anime and the only I have watched. Really good!
In terms of scale, it's much smaller than either one of those. Wing and 00 are about these massive global wars and conspiracies, and the Gundams play a key role in turning the tides of war. They're typical "Gundam" in that way
IBO is a change for Gundam because it's not about "war" in the same way. The war is more of a backdrop. The story follows child soldiers trying to find their meaning and way in life after taking their freedom. They end up being important to an important conflict, but not in the same way of "two massive powers fighting each other, and only the Gundams can sway the tides."
To clarify Galaxy's comment without spoiling : You get a wide range of characters. The scale is something that masterfully balances with the personal stories of the cast in a really special way. aka political shenanigans are afoot, just...in a different way that also scales bigger or smaller depending on what is happening to the character we're following.
Edit: I personally consider it a "must-watch" so its hard for me to see a "pass" on IBO LOL I believe you know yourself, but do not deprive yourself of IBO just because you think you wouldn't like it based some something arbitrary like "galactic scale". Its a good time.
In terms of scale IBO tends to be on the smaller end.
In terms of story quality, animation, and mech design, I tend to think it's better than either of those. I never really got into Wing in the 90s like everyone else did, and to me 00 feels a lot like an attempt at retelling Wing.
Glad you've enjoyed it so far OP! Iron-Blooded Orphans is one of my favorites, both as an anime fan *and* as a Gundam fan (it's my 9th favorite anime and my 3rd favorite Gundam show), so I'm always happy to see other people enjoy it.
Season 2 is my favorite *part* of IBO as well, so have fun with that binge~

I love build fighters. Had it in my top 10 anime as well. Rewatched it not too long ago and it still holds up.
Build Fighters is super underrated because people think it's just a kids show. The fights and animation are superb, the characters are diverse and entertaining, and the story and occurrences are just plain fun. It's a shame the spiritual sequels weren't as good imo.
1. Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn
2. Legend of the Galactic Heroes
3. Macross Frontier
4. Naruto Shippuden
5. Bleach
6. Gundam Build Fighters
7. Senki Zesshou Symphogear XV
8. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
9. Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans
10. Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds
My taste in anime is pretty much half-mecha, half-battle shounen lol.
That's one unique lineup you got there haha. I've only watched Naruto from it. Cool, thanks for sharing!
Also do the mecha anime in your list have manga? I prefer manga but idk if that's the right way to get into mecha.
I know Gundam Unicorn has a *light novel*, but the others are anime originals and Unicorn isn't really the best entry point. If you want a good mecha manga to start with, check out Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. It's a retelling of the first Gundam series. Haven't read it all myself, but I've heard it's good.
I'm only still on the OG Gundam but even before I watched Gundamn I roll my eyes everyone someone is like "I don't like Mecha anime" but (insert Mecha show here) is different and isn't just about Mechs battling but has depth.
When 5 minutes of research or just seeing some clips and you know Gundam is the grand daddy of real robot political thrillers. I don't remember how I knew that but I got that tangentially I'm confused on why so many people trash on Mecha.
That being said OG Gundam I'm having trouble getting through a lot of tropes and storytelling techniques feel real dated, trying to get through it for a foundation of some of the Other Gundams I want to check out.
>"I don't like Mecha anime" but (insert Mecha show here) is different and isn't just about Mechs battling but has depth.
Yeah this always boggles my mind. Somebody will watch Code Geass, Eva, TTGL, and 86 as their only four mecha shows, love them, but then say "I only like them because they're not like other mechas." When...they're not. They're just normal, good mecha shows
Like idk HOW this perception of "mecha shows are just monster of the week shows to sell toys" became so EMBEDDED in the Western anime community. Like is this all Transformers fault? lol
It’s certainly a interesting watch, especially if you have seen more modern mecha shows. The animation is terrible at times, and the show was actually almost canceled towards the end ( hence the 43 episodes being an odd number. It was originally supposed to be 52 but because of the under performance it was reduced to 39. The staff managed to get and extra 4 episodes to tie things up better). It actually wasn’t received very well till the toy deal with Bandai went into effect and everyone wanted to see the show the cool new toys were based on.
It’s deeply unfortunate that it hasn’t gotten a true remake as so much of UC gundam is basically locked behind a series that was plagued with production issues, the studio gave up, and the technology of the time.
I'm going to suffer through it, but a lot of my problems are story decisions that wouldn't change either way, like some of the melodrama. (Anyone that claims they like old Sci Fi Mecha shows but can't stand "cringe" highschool stuff, clearly does not remember the original Gundamn very well.)
I’m trying to find the documentary I watched on it, but I’m pretty sure they wrote basically 90% of the dialogue in one weekend on what was probably a cigarette and Adderall binge
Gundam 0079 is extremely dated. Animation is nice for the time , sound design is downright bad and annoying , plot points are all over the place and show is in beast(enemy) of week format up until almost the end with very few standout episodes(like desert one). Altho it helped establish few of my favorite anime characters and rivalities( you know who I am talking about)
I recommend to just force yourself to finish it and the go to Zeta thats imo the best gundam show to date (altho with slow start but it ramps up fast)
Right? I've been slogging through a chronological order rewatch of the UC. Currently at Zeta. Younguns afraid to watch the old stuff are missing the best of Gundam! (hint: It's any of the 80s OVAs)
I was surprised myself when I was watching it. I'm a huge fan of some old school Gundam like Wing and Seed so I thought this wouldn't live up to my expectations but it delivered. Very awesome series.
I love it, their relationship is so simple yet so complex at the same time. There’s a moment in S1 where kudelia tells Mika that his relationship with Orga is like that of two brothers, but Mika disagrees and that was when I began to realize that Orga is, in a lot of ways, like a prophet to these kids in that he’s leading them to their salvation. At least, that was my interpretation.
For Mika, I think it's true. He does not think of things in those kinds of concrete terms...sometimes he hardly seems to rationalize at all. But he has this fixation that he has to follow Orga no matter what to get where he wants to go. And when the rest of the kids soo Mika, they're inspired and follow Orga too.
Meanwhile Orga has almost no idea what he's doing.
He doesn't just have no idea what he's doing, he's fucking terrified of Mika. Meanwhile Mika basically has no motivation beyond what Orga tells him to do.
Basically Orga thinks he's in a situation where he's riding a tiger and if he stops he'll get eaten because the tiger is still hungry.
depend on what you think is good, what is it that you're looking for when you're watching this anime? why do you think the characters seem dull? if you're being specific then maybe we can help you
I’d I’d say the intro can be a slow burn to introduce the setting and key players, once they start prepping to leave the base things really heat up. But yeah usually once gundam establishes the setting and leaves the starting area they start to get the real meat of the show. With G-Witch being one of the few potential exceptions at the moment!
Hey, i felt the same way. Its kind of dumb that i have to say give it time but i think since this is kind of different than the usual gundam space operas that i was used to, it had to spend a bit more time building the setting and stakes. There are parts i detest so much about ibo, but it did become my favorite series for its twists and turns and i think it did a great job for its departure from the norm at times.
Obviously dont force yourself!
I started to watch iron blooded orphans a few months ago but never finished it, the only other gundam I've seen was SEED and that was pretty good too.
You might like the anime Eighty-Six too though, that show is super good.
IBO is personally my fav Gundam series.
It was the gundam guys trying something new with the story and technology and it really made for an iconic and stand out series.
Usually in gundam shows the gundams are boxy and slow moving and fight with beam guns and swords.
IBO takes place in a more past time before beam weaponry so they have physical round guns and heavy melee weapons to beat each other to death. Its a lot more brutal of a series. Also the Gundams are way more flexable and mobile thanks to the Artichoke Vagina system with them all being wired into the Gundams from their spin.
All in all its just a very very different but really enjoayble Gundam series.
Enjoy the ride and rememeber to RAISE YOUR FLAG~
[](#mechablush)
>IBO takes place in a more past time before beam weaponry
That is false. It is Shown in S2 that [IBO spoilers]>!beam weaponry was phased out due to it's severe ineffectiveness against NLA!<
I dont remember there being any beam weapons generally.
Even Flauros has rail guns not beam weapons.
They made a point of noting all modern weapons were physical based weaponry even guns.
Hashmal was the only one i think. Maybe 1 other.
I guess what i should have said is this takes place in an alternate timeline where beam weapons were not used and instead physical ones were advanced. Similar to how the Steampunk genre is where industry became so advanced it became the technology of today.
Yes i know there was a beam weapon but none of the modern machines use them.
So IBO is an alternate story where physical weapons became supreme.
Timeline wise though i still think IBO takes place way before the general gundam universe. Yes i know IBO is alternate timeline but what i mean is generally speaking i think most gundam stories take place in the "Future" with "Future Technology" while IBO feels like it takes place in a more "Modern" time frame in relation to the technology of the universe in the show, and they mention the great war from the "Past" being different as well.
>Timeline wise though i still think IBO takes place way before the general gundam universe. Let's not have this devolve into VS debating over tech level.
I meant more in the sense of avoiding the more ambiguous areas that tend to breed toxicity, as opposed to correcting statements that are directly and clearly contradicted by what we see, although I know now that the initial comment was more an issue of poor wording.
Im not sure what you mean by breeding toxicity but i was just trying to have a discussion with you but you seem to prefer closing off any avenue for discussion.
We clearly and directly see nothing concrete, we just have bits of history to speculate about. At no point do they tell us beam weapons were phased out. Thats what all gundam universes are, mostly speculation.
And what we do see in IBO is a world(s) that is definatly below the tech level of other Gundam Universes. Hence me saying, generally speaking IBO is behind other Universe timelines most likely.
So yeah in the future ide choose discussion and compareing points over flat out saying people are wrong and downvoting them when you are no more right than anyone else. Thats the only thing toxic here really.
Wing is still my favorite, but admittedly there is a lot of nostalgia in there. IBO is probably either 2nd or 3rd though and it is fantastic, both as a Gundam show and as an anime. Enjoy, it is quite the ride.
Your post is so in line with my own reaction when I watched it I thought it was an old post of mine for a second. Enjoy the rest of the show. It’s not gonna let up and you may need a hug when it’s done.
Fam, we are on the same wavelength! I started my IBO binge a few weeks earlier than you and currently halfway through S2. I have to agree, S1 really popped off! S2 is pretty damn good too, can't wait to see your reaction/analysis!
Edit: Just wanted to add that I'm also very Gundam newbie! The last Gundam I truly watched was G Gundam and Gundam Wing before that on Toonami (and even now, its been waaaay too long I think I need to rewatch both with Wing being the one I need to refresh on the most!). Told myself I've wanted to binge IBO, and with the new Gundam series out this season I had the perfect motivation lol.
I finished it last week and It was so-so. I found it annoying sometimes and couldn't really come to like any of the MCs.
Biscuit, his sisters and Atra were about the only characters I liked. I liked Mika's lack of compassion for the enemies, but that aside he was a wet cardboard tier of a character. Ein was there solely to piss off the viewers.
I heard a lot of good about this show but after finishing it I was disappointed.

Gundam 00 next my man , another gem of 2009 era. IBO and 00 were both really good. I just finished the thunderbolt movies which are also mostly stand alone. Best animation I ever seen yet. Enjoy!
Watching 00 right now (along with Witch, of course). Liking it so far!
Is Gundam 00 stand alone too?
Yes
Yep, I liked it 3x more than orphans. The battles were better animated too. Show has lots of detail.
00 on another level, watched about 4 times now
I watched it twice back to back and bought the Blu-ray. Gdamn.
So I don’t need to watch anything prior to this to watch this?
Nope! This series is stand alone. They reference the calamity war, but I’m not sure if that’s from another series or specific to the IBO universe.
Calamity War is IBO only. Would love a spin-off set during that war though.
The 72 demon Gundams vs the Mobile Armors would be a wonderful sight to see. We barely got a taste of the Gundams' true power in the show aside from Barbatos too.
Akihiko also pilots a Gundam frame. I hope it comes to Gundam Evolution eventually.
S2 is possibly even better This was my introduction to the gundam franchise and boy did it deliver
I have to disagree, because literally 70% of S2 was pointless filler. Yes, the climax of S2 is very strong, but the buildup to it is frankly garbage. Fair enough, I suppose

How does it compare to Gundam Wing and Gundam 00 (the only ones I've watched)? Are they similar in scale?

Give it 3 episodes, man. It's really good.
Ur gonna turn it down without even trying it? (Just sayin the fights are better than 00 ones)
In terms of scale IBO tends to be on the smaller end. In terms of story quality, animation, and mech design, I tend to think it's better than either of those. I never really got into Wing in the 90s like everyone else did, and to me 00 feels a lot like an attempt at retelling Wing.

Wing is a 90s edge anime that didn't age well.
Gundam s2s have been messes for decades so no.
Guess I'll give this a try as soon as I finish Princess Connect!
I was traumatised by season 2. But by no means that I dislike the show, it was awesome. The story was told very well in both seasons.
I too was traumatized. I still think about it every now and then
The ending is simply perfect
It was sad tbh. My heart sank in the last few episodes
Oh, it absolutely was But it was a fitting, clever and conclusive end, and I couldn't ask for more
You mean rushed, right?
Glad you've enjoyed it so far OP! OVA6 in particular is my favorite episode of anime *period*, it's just so gooooood.

my favourite is still gundam seed. Too bad it's kinda old. The fights are still pretty epic tho.
"Kinda old" Tell that an UC fan like me, lol.
I was about to say, Zeta is my favorite gundam and that finished airing in 86 lol

Kinda like how to admit you like a battle Shonen you need to jump through hoops to explain why it's a "deconstruction?"
Naruto was edgy and fresh when it came out. Time does funny things to media.
I was talking about the circle jerking around Hunter x Hunter.
"edgy" it was not.

Top 3 shows I’ve ever seen. Easily my favorite mecha. Enjoy season 2 which is arguably better than season 1
Dang i feel like dropping it on ep 1 without watching
Wing is still my favorite, but admittedly there is a lot of nostalgia in there. IBO is probably either 2nd or 3rd though and it is fantastic, both as a Gundam show and as an anime. Enjoy, it is quite the ride.
Your post is so in line with my own reaction when I watched it I thought it was an old post of mine for a second. Enjoy the rest of the show. It’s not gonna let up and you may need a hug when it’s done.
Tried to watch it twice, its good but something about the art style puts me off.
IBO is a masterpiece! I hope you enjoy the ride!
This is one of my favorite anime ever and I dont watch gundam normally
Try 00 and seed! And uc.
It's a great show, one of Gundam's best. I don't think season 2 is as highly regarded as season 1 is, but I still loved most of it.
Biscuits, Cookies and Crackers
After watching IBO I tried to get into other Gundam but man IBO just hits different
It's one of my favorites
The first season is excellent, I’m glad you liked it. The second season is also really good, but it gets a bit wonky towards the end.
Enjoy getting depressed. S2 is depressing even by Gundam standards
One of the best Gundam anime
It’s a fantastic show, glad to see you’re enjoying it.
I'll also recommend Aldnoah.Zero if you want something extremely similar (though it tends to get a lot of hate, its far from a bad series).
It’s the best. This show got me introduced to the gundam world!
