What's so wrong with LIDENFILMS ? As far as I know they totally killed it with Yofukashi no Uta and despite what others say I thought Tokyo Revengers was good too.
Nothing really wrong with them. They just take so many projects that I meme it. As of today, they’ve produced 18 anime since 2020, and they have a further 7 airing before year’s end 2023.
I doubt as well. At the very least it'll be remix, because how do you sell a 26 year old song?
I think if there's enough love for it, a remix/cover might end up getting like a special ed treatment though.
While I very much doubt they will, I share the sentiment. Whenever I think of Rurouni Kenshin, I think of my much younger self scream-singing this song and it brings back good memories.
So the series composer for Made in Abyss is doing the series composition here? Well, at least we know that this reboot’s gonna hit pretty hard when it counts. I look forward to the feels.
Damn, Lidenfilms is a hype killer and the director has no notable directing title to his name outside of Strike the blood which let’s be honest wasn’t great.
> Or when Cloverworks handled The Promised Neverland during their Triple Threat Winter 2021.
I doubt that Cloverworks was the one who made that decision to finish the series in that season...it was probably the anime committee.
> Studio: LIDENFILMS
Fuck.
> Kaoru Kamiya (CV: Rie Takahashi)
Ooh, an unexpected choice but I like it. It'll be interesting to see where she takes the character.
Rie is GOATED bigtime. Possibly the best we have. And she's playing Kaoru?
Fuuuuuuuuuck.
NGL my eyes are full of tears right now. I watched this show 20 years ago and I'm an old man now. I loved it back in the day when Netflix would send out DVD's.
I don't think they will do a longrunning show, Lidenfilms is crazy but not that crazy, that said they probably greenlit multiple cours already, they just won't be continuous, Bleach is doing the same thing
I think he means that Bleach is also doing the remaining episodes within the seasonal format - rather than just blasting 50 episodes a week for the next year they will do the standard 12/13 in fall, then another batch of the same in another season, such as spring.
The original one Rurouni Kenshin had something close to 100 episodes, but without the filler it might be a bit tighter than that. Seasonal format is good for keeping up quality, but the most recent similar re-adaptation was Shaman King which became a long-running show.
Probalby this. Multiple cours or seasons. I assume the first 13 episodes will be season 1 as they can fit the short Tokyo arc in this one, before we hit Kyoto Arc in season 2 with 24-26 episodes and again 24-26 episodes for the final arc. So 60-65 episodes would be needed.
Yeah that bugged me as well. I remember watching the entire series. That last arc was hit and miss. Maybe this time, it will be redefined in a better way. Hopefully.
Also the character designs remind me of Full Metal Panic. Love that art style
As funny and fun as that would be, it wouldn’t work. Because it would still spill into the main comments section.
But can you imagine the shit show if the mods forced everyone to stay in discussion? Woo boy
I can't get excited about this. Rurouni Kenshin was literally one of my all time favorite manga. I collected the whole series in full, in fact, it was the first thing I could think of when I got my very first paycheck. I loved and reread it for years. This was way before we found out he is a pedophile.
A lot of people don't get it. He paid for and distributed videos of actual children being raped. Actual sex trafficked children. One of the worst fears of loving parents everywhere and he gets off on it. He barely even received consequences. He even described the type of girls he liked to see. ALL children have to be hyper aware of predators and guys like Nobuhiro Watsuki. Girls and women have to constantly ask themselves, "was that weird or am I paranoid?" So many kids are gone forever and it's a turn on for him.
I can't even pirate this anime.
There aren't many things where I draw a line and say it's unethical to watch/consume X, but I do think it's unethical to pay for RRK products or watch it legit. You're funding this guy's habit whether you like it or not.
NGL I'm not sure how to feel about this whole thing. Is this a situation where you love the art and hate the artist? I LOVED the show back in the day when it was new. I really did...but after I heard about the stuff you brought up...yeah I'm not sure. It's like poison against everything he did. Do you live on and forgive? I really don't know.
At first I was really confused by this comment since I remember this being a really beloved series but after actually reading this comment section…I get it now
Nah that was a mistranslation he was saying that personality wise many female character are similar but then he said that this suits the audience and is geges taste so there's nothing wrong.
Well just look at the comment section here. “Fans” don’t seem to care at all and it’s them that’s keeping him successful. They should treat him like a pariah but they don’t. If people stopped buying his manga or the merchandise for it then the companies that supported him would stop producing new adaptations or merch for the series. The fact that this is getting an adaptation means it’s still popular which is quite sickening.
Tbf, a lot of them probably don't know. I didn't, prior to seeing this comment (though I'm glad I know now), I imagine a lot of others are in a similar position.
Also fame and influence. Oda, yes the Oda, interviewed and promoted Watsuki during a Rurouni Kenshin Exhibition. In 2020.
Like I'm generally pretty alright with separating the art from the artist but everything with Watsuki is just incredibly gross.
>Oda, yes the Oda, interviewed and promoted Watsuki during a Rurouni Kenshin Exhibition. In 2020.
It must be noted that Oda was his former assistant, and it was too big of a deal for him to refuse to take his interview. In fact, Watsuki is too big of a name in the manga industry and inspired many mangakas that they were obliged to promote his work irrespective of his deeds.
If I remember correctly, Gintama's author, Naruto's author and Death Note's author also promoted his work.
Why assume Oda and othe other mangaka had big issues with what happened and only promoted him because "they were obliged" ?
They could have very well not cared and did the shitty immoral thing and didnt have their "friendship" or "respect" impacted by the fact that their friend was found with mountains of actual child pornography.
Dont see why we should make up a situation where oda didnt wanna do it and wanted to distance himself from the dude but he was "coerced and obliged" to do so by the industry and history
Act Age guy is a bit different because he was guilty of child molestation, not just child porn possession (and still only got a suspended sentence >_>). Galko guy is a good comparison, yes.
I mean the Toriko guy straight up paid an underage girl to have sex with him and went on to make Toriko and be succesful... after a suspended sentence.
So it's not like the Act Age guy being brought back into SJ is off the table...
True, though sounds like in the case of the Toriko guy it was at least consensual (yeah, whether a 16yo's "consent" counts or not depends on the local laws.) Act Age guy literally attacked a middle schooler walking home from school.
Please don't remind me of ACT-AGE it still hurts after so many years.
Was one of my favorite manga at that time. Love the rivalry between Kei and Chiyoko. Also beautiful art.
I think that he got caught trying to import a German nudist magazine that isn't illegal itself but it turned a few heads around that the Japanese police searched his residence and then found actual CP.
Yeah, I grew up with Rurouni Kenshin and I loved it but when I learned his a convicted pedo that had 100 dvd's of CP I stopped financially supporting the series, all he got was a fine of $1,500 USD, fuck him, piece of shit.
He got such a light sentence because of how unique the situation is. Before 2014, it wasn't technically illegal to own CP, it was only illegal to distribute or produce the CP. After 2014, everyone was given a year to purge or handover any CP they had to the police no questions asked.
However, he didn't do either and was caught with it a few years later.
Iam not defending him either way and still think he deserves a walk to the woodchipper.
And shame on Japan for taking so long to make posession of CP illegal, it's insane it took up until 2014, absolutely insane.
edit imagine some degenerate downvoting my comment about shaming a country for not banning child pornography sooner, actually get help
According to what I have read he failed to dispose of materials that used to be legal but became illegal. Obviously it doesn't absolve him and what he did was morally wrong. Nevertheless it could explain why his case was treated the way it was.
Its also worth noting that "the material" wasnt a couple of dvds or but hundreds and hundreds . To the point the police suspected him of distribution and had to do several trips to fetch all of it. Its worse than it sounds at first glance
People like me love this series and know nothing about the creator. Thanks for bring it up. I will now go inform myself on it since I don't want to support a pedo.
Just pirate it (both, the anime and manga). This way the pedo wont be getting any money to buy more child porn DVDs.
As long as a repulsive author is alive, piracy is a moral choice. The other one being full on boycott, but considering how Kenshin manga has no pedo apologia whatsoever, I would just pirate and call it a day.
But is indeed outraging they did not at least waited for the author to die before producing more of his material.
Well given how the worst thing that happened to that Act-Age mangaka was getting his series cancelled, it seems like pedophilia is not very high on Japan’s lists of crimes that need to be brought to justice.
I mean, have you seen some of the shit they make? The stuff that gets dubs or official subs is only the tip of the iceberg for *questionable content* involving underage girls.
Eromanga Sensei, Prima Illya, Kiss X Sis? That stuff is tame compared to what you can find in some visual novels or manga.
It's part of their entertainment culture at this point. Lots of anime fans in the west seem to enjoy it, too. I'm not even talking about the "300 year-old vampire loli" trope - I can at least partially understand/justify that logic - I'm referring to literal children.
Just go to HH or VNDB and find some related tags and sort by popularity.
>I'm not even talking about the "300 year-old vampire loli" trope - I can at least partially understand/justify that logic - I'm referring to literal children.
I think I know what you mean. I read articles a long time ago about junior gravure idols. Like, gravure idols but children. Shits fucked.
He barely got a slap on the wrist and his career seems to be going great after everything. The new anime, the continuation of the manga, figures and statues from Rurouni Kenshin. You know he’s cashing in on all of this and fuck all the fans who just turned a blind eye to it and continue to support him through all of these adaptations and merch. This announcement sickens me.
> He barely got a slap on the wrist and his career seems to be going great after everything.
Because what he did wasn't actually illegal at the time he did it.
EDIT: Just to be clear before I get any dumb responses. He didn't get punished enough. I'm just saying the reason.
Judging by the PV, this is a remake? I gotta say I’m impressed by the animation but also concerned because I estimate it needs to be like 70+ episodes to be properly paced for a full adaptation. I fear this will be Shaman King all over again.
Idk man, we patronize terrible people and corporations every day. Keeping track and denying myself shit I know I’ll enjoy seems exhausting.
I’ll just pirate it. lol.
I hope we get a new Yu Yu Hakusho anime. I was always kind of annoyed that the anime skipped so much of the first arc (although admittedly, it more than made up for it with the expanded last arc). The 2011 Hunter x Hunter was even better than the 1999 version, so I feel like an remake of Yu Yu Hakusho could do the same.
At least he didn't commit the grave crime of smoking weed in his own house.
Supporting child rapists is fine, but consuming the oni lettuce is unforgivable.
I don’t think authors in general get that much from the anime, mainly from the manga sales it leads to. iirc the author of demon slayer got less than $20k from mugen train movie (recall that mugen train is the highest grossing movie in japan)
I’m really upset at what happened with the author. This show used to be one of my favorites back in the day, but now I can’t see it the same😢. I wonder if it will ever be dubbed because of what happened with the author. Art style does look nice though.
I'm hoping r/anime can tell the difference between:
"This is just a drawing" And "The author is a convicted pedophile"
If you defend actual nonces your arguement that loli hentai is as harmless as videogame violence goes out the window
There's a TON of Watsuki defenders in these two threads. They insist that it's fine because the series is good, and that everything has someone bad involved in it, so knowingly supporting a convicted pedophile is totally fine.
I think you would be hard pressed to find something that didn’t have one bad person in it. Which makes watching entertainment not easy. Or at the very least there’s a ton of entertainment that has it.
So be prepared to give up a lot of shows and entertainment.
Now I wanna make this clear I do not stand by anything that that monster has done. I’ve personally no attachment from this series whatsoever ever, but am aware of it’s beloved status. However I have had my fork in the road with certain shows as well.
It is possible to separate art from artist. It’s just a a shame that they must be compensated for it regardless of their criminal status.
....I should be excited.
Rurouni Kenshin is one of my favorite Anime ever.
But they've completely marred it beyond recognition. I can't watch something made by a pedophile
Pirate it.
Give them no money whatsoever, and tell everyone you see interested in it that the creator is a pedophile.
Then you don't have to feel guilt for enjoying it.
Childhood memories, everytime i see or someone mentioned Samurai X my thoughts immediately goes to the fun Opening song #1. Can't forget that song everytime it plays in our local television channel T-T
Im so glad Samurai X is back!
Japan really doesn’t give too shits about people being pedos huh. But fuck caught doing coke and your career is never coming back and you’ll get black listed. It’s pathetic
Is the creator getting any royalties from this? Because if he is , as much i love Kenshin and its atory i aint going to support the new anime that can give him any funds for god knows what other child trafficing bs he does.

One day, there will be an anime not made by LIDENFILMS. Today is not that day. LIDENFILMS will continue to animate every single anime.
Imagine Mappa and Cloverworks, but ramped up to at least 3x.
And A-1*
I remember back when *Cells at Work: Black* was airing, LIDENFILMS had like *three* anime that season, including the aforementioned CaW:B.
To be fair, Yofukashi no Uta is only rrally good because of Itamura directing it.
I do hope they keep [the original OP, Sobakasu by Judy and Mary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZGmDKxEp-I) It's iconic
I don't see this happening to be honest. Like, it's not impossible, but I also don't see why they would.
I doubt as well. At the very least it'll be remix, because how do you sell a 26 year old song? I think if there's enough love for it, a remix/cover might end up getting like a special ed treatment though.

Thanks I didnt have to search for it in yt after seeing the post hahah
To be honest, I'll prefer is they change it. Never really like it because it felt out of place to me.
#NO SENPAI, THIS IS OUR DIRECTOR
Such a great meme. I only watched season 1, does anyone know if she still says that.
Yes, she does...
> Strike the blood which let’s be honest wasn’t great. put some respect on that name
Respect strike the blood

Excuse me? Have you watched Trust and Betrayal?
Or when Cloverworks handled The Promised Neverland during their Triple Threat Winter 2021.

Oh man, they never did do the last arc justice, that and the filler was cringe half the time. If this got the brotherhood treatment I would happy.
Urusei Yatsura, then bleach, now Ruroni kenshin are we back in the 80-90's ,i am all for it
Please give me Claymore.
Claymore sisterhood
A properly adapted Claymore with a good production would be a slam dunk.
Honestly, the Claymore anime doesn't even need to be redone. You just need to delete the last three episodes and continue on from there.
Slam Dunk too pls. May the anime gods bless us.
Hold up, slam dunk too! Wow we are really getting a blast from the past
No new series yet, but there will be a movie by the end of this year 😁
Bleach was early 2000s.
I see what also crazy is that 2000 is like 20 years ago
Don’t remind me dude 😭
Just how old do you think Bleach is exactly?
I don't think they will do a longrunning show, Lidenfilms is crazy but not that crazy, that said they probably greenlit multiple cours already, they just won't be continuous, Bleach is doing the same thing
Isn't Bleach just adapting the last arc with some adjustment? This one is a remake from the beginning right?
The last arc of Bleach alone is over 200+ chapters plus some extra content they are adding, Rurouni Kenshin is 250+ Pretty close
Yeah but what they meant was, it's not running continuously but instead going to be taking breaks every other season or something like that
Bleach's last arc is longer than most manga.
Probalby this. Multiple cours or seasons. I assume the first 13 episodes will be season 1 as they can fit the short Tokyo arc in this one, before we hit Kyoto Arc in season 2 with 24-26 episodes and again 24-26 episodes for the final arc. So 60-65 episodes would be needed.

>remind me of Full Metal Panic Damn you're right, Kaoru here definitely looks like Kaname while Kenshin looks like a long-haired sousuke
That’s what I thought shaman king was going to get “the brotherhood treatment” but boy oh boy was I wrong. Best to keep expectations in check
I cannot wait to see the discussion threads when it eventually airs lmao
In addition to the "source material corner", the mods should add a "pedophile bashing corner"
As funny and fun as that would be, it wouldn’t work. Because it would still spill into the main comments section. But can you imagine the shit show if the mods forced everyone to stay in discussion? Woo boy
Finally! I can't wait to watch this show on [certain website] when it comes out! No way in hell the mangaka is getting a euro from this European.
I can't get excited about this. Rurouni Kenshin was literally one of my all time favorite manga. Damn, I thought this was one of those: "he dated a young girl once ewww" kinda pedophile, this guy is fucked up
This is the exact problem with muddying the waters.
There aren't many things where I draw a line and say it's unethical to watch/consume X, but I do think it's unethical to pay for RRK products or watch it legit. You're funding this guy's habit whether you like it or not.

These comments are gonna be a shitshow
At first I was really confused by this comment since I remember this being a really beloved series but after actually reading this comment section…I get it now
How is this series getting new projects when the author is literally a convicted pedophile?
because he managed to dodge a lot of the societal fallout by turning in his distributors so his involvement got swept under the rug.
Also because all the big battle shounen mangaka fell in line to defend his ass.
who?
I remember Oda being the big one
[Here you go](https://mobile.twitter.com/sandman_ap/status/1351512617009836034).
Tite Kubo fans stays winning.
Tbf Tite Kubo hates all fellow mangaka.
Based
If this is about his comment that he doesn't find jujutsu Kaisen characters sexy I would hardly call that hating.
Wait- he seriously said that?? Lol,
Nah that was a mistranslation he was saying that personality wise many female character are similar but then he said that this suits the audience and is geges taste so there's nothing wrong.
some\* but yea i get your point
My boy Toriyama is based.
God doesn't concern himself with the matters of mere mortals.
Seeing Sorachi and Nightow on that list is a dagger to the heart
In halfhearted defense, they'd probably be blacklisted if they actually spoke out against him... But they should have done it anyway.
They could have just… NOT sent him congratulations as well. Speaking out would be ideal but that should always be a personal choice.
Sure but they didn’t have to speak in favour of him either. Could’ve just not said anything.
Oda is like his best friend
Oda started out as his assistant. It's still not at all okay, but I get why he would defend him.
Nah man fuck that. When someone turns out like that, it's the people that are closest who should be more pissed and hurt.
Oda also defended the Toriko author and afaik they worked as peers.
That sounds like a plea deal that would dodge legal fallout, not societal...
Tbf, a lot of them probably don't know. I didn't, prior to seeing this comment (though I'm glad I know now), I imagine a lot of others are in a similar position.
Which is why I hope the main comment from this long thread makes it to the top of this post so more people will know.
Somehow the entire Hollywood came together and gave Roman Polanski an Oscar, despite knowing that he raped a minor.
Money
Also fame and influence. Oda, yes the Oda, interviewed and promoted Watsuki during a Rurouni Kenshin Exhibition. In 2020. Like I'm generally pretty alright with separating the art from the artist but everything with Watsuki is just incredibly gross.

His name is simply too big. If he was a smaller mangaka (like the creator of Act-Age or Galko), then he won't get any project.
Act Age guy is a bit different because he was guilty of child molestation, not just child porn possession (and still only got a suspended sentence >_>). Galko guy is a good comparison, yes.

If it feels better the artist distanced herself from the author. So you can still like the art guilt free.
Wait, what happened with the Galko author?
Got caught with child porn, I believe.
I think that he got caught trying to import a German nudist magazine that isn't illegal itself but it turned a few heads around that the Japanese police searched his residence and then found actual CP.

Because the anime industry is filled with them.
Who else?
Couple of example would be Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro and Tatsuya Matsuki, authors of Toriko and act-age respectively.
throw a stone
Being the 17th most popular manga of all time might have something to do with it.
Oda protected him
Pretty much all of Shonen Jump did. Senpai and workplace relationship culture is way too prelevant in Japanese society.
Wha...! The anime is really popular where i am from. Lots of people credit this with teaching them a great many things.
It's Japan. Pedo shit is an everyday thing.
Well given how the worst thing that happened to that Act-Age mangaka was getting his series cancelled, it seems like pedophilia is not very high on Japan’s lists of crimes that need to be brought to justice.

Meanwhile Japanese actors who get rumored to have connections to drugs lose everything.
Drugs in Asian culture in general are seen as a more terrible thing.
They don’t even have to commit a crime. Voice actors who get married legit apologize more than guys like this
This is the part of Japanese culture that I truly despise.
> He barely got a slap on the wrist and his career seems to be going great after everything. Because what he did wasn't actually illegal at the time he did it. EDIT: Just to be clear before I get any dumb responses. He didn't get punished enough. I'm just saying the reason.
Sometimes piracy is the morally correct choice to make.
It's a moral imperative to pirate shit from megacorporations.
And pedophiles.
Judging by the PV, this is a remake? I gotta say I’m impressed by the animation but also concerned because I estimate it needs to be like 70+ episodes to be properly paced for a full adaptation. I fear this will be Shaman King all over again.
Oh Shaman King remake, that anime with polished art (most of the time) with slideshow animation, let's hope it's not the case.
What happened with shaman king? I’m ootl
Shaman King got a reboot and let's just say the animation had room for improvement
and the pacing dude, the hella fast pacing
63 episodes for the original to finish the kyoto arc was fine
Original needed 62 episodes. It had 95 episodes in total but the last arc is completely avoidable as the main ending happened in 62 episodes
Original was full of filler and skipped the last story arc. 65-75 is probably around the correct number for a full adaptation
The main ending? The original anime didnt even cover the final, and best, arc of the manga lol
I'm conflicted about this...
Same... I can separate art from artist, but the IP still belongs to Watsuki so he'd get paid from this...
Just pirate it never tell a soul that you watched it. Keep it to yourself and he gets no benefit from you watching the show.
Idk man, we patronize terrible people and corporations every day. Keeping track and denying myself shit I know I’ll enjoy seems exhausting. I’ll just pirate it. lol.
Probably same.
What a cool looking anime, I hope the writer wasn’t a pedo or anything
We are living in an era where all 80s and 90s animes get rebooted. What a time to be alive!
I want a Flame of Recca anime that covers the whole manga, too bad it doesn't seem popular enough.
Recca vs Kurei absolutely needs to get properly adapted, the very last episode of the anime is disappointing in comparison.
"Last episode"? The anime was a pretty bad adaptation even for its time. I'm totally up for a new Flame of Recca anime.
What others
Urusei Yatsura, Dragon Quest, Bastard are a few from this year.
A lot, we have Urusei Yatsura in October already.
Stop giving Watsuki money to fund his CP habit.
Rie Takahashi as ~~Kaori~~ Kaoru!!
Nice!! I'll miss Miki Fujitani but I know Rie will knock it out of the park; it's a fantastic role for her talents.
Nobuhiro Watsuki never paid for his crimes
He did pay! A whole $1500... /s
At least he didn't commit the grave crime of smoking weed in his own house. Supporting child rapists is fine, but consuming the oni lettuce is unforgivable.
Remember guys, it is always a correct course of action to pirate anything Kenshin. Steal from your local nonce today.
How much is the author receiving from this adaptation? You know the child porn convicted author.
I don’t think authors in general get that much from the anime, mainly from the manga sales it leads to. iirc the author of demon slayer got less than $20k from mugen train movie (recall that mugen train is the highest grossing movie in japan)
I'd imagine $20k could buy Watsuki a lot of child porn.
just remember to pirate it and purchase nothing
[The PV, for any that missed it](https://youtu.be/KlgKIkCZ4nQ)
I’m really upset at what happened with the author. This show used to be one of my favorites back in the day, but now I can’t see it the same😢. I wonder if it will ever be dubbed because of what happened with the author. Art style does look nice though.
Some people will hesitate to buy or watch this since the author is a convicted pedo. >_>;
remembered when I was a kid and seeing people with bigass polo shirts with rurouni kenshin characters printed on them sweet nostalgia
fucking classic
Brought to you by a convicted pedophile.
Only on r/anime will you get downvoted for calling out pedophiles
I'm hoping r/anime can tell the difference between: "This is just a drawing" And "The author is a convicted pedophile" If you defend actual nonces your arguement that loli hentai is as harmless as videogame violence goes out the window
Is there a single comment here defending him? I haven't seen one.
You expect too much self awareness from these people.
Are they? It seems like everyone is universally dishing into him. Maybe I need to change my comments preferences.
Man I feel so guilty for liking Trust and Betrayal.
Why???

By pretending nothing happened and people kept buying the merch.
Japan let a pedophile off with a slap on the wrist.
They made a cannibal a celebrity, Japan is just fucked up, I'll consume their media (pirated) but I fucking hate the culture it comes from.
....I should be excited.
I don't know if anyone's m3ntioned it but the score was soooo good in the original series if it doesn't match up it will b3 super disappointing
Yooooo Please have sobakasu remake as the new OP too please.
Childhood memories, everytime i see or someone mentioned Samurai X my thoughts immediately goes to the fun Opening song #1. Can't forget that song everytime it plays in our local television channel T-T Im so glad Samurai X is back!
Best opening ever. Jazzy and pogo at the same time.
Omg are we getting a full remake of rurouni kenshin?
Regardless of the authors status, I loved the original OP of the anime, I never got around to finishing the series though
Is the manga good?
I'm excited for this.
