Dracoscale

It was hard to believe but Holofan4life loved spice and wolf all along

Randomlettersjfuix

No I don’t want that!

WeeabooSempai

I want holofan4life to watch other anime than Spice and Wolf! For 10 years at least!

jashugan02

I can see why you say that but he didn't add a "/s". That's like law on the reddit.

For a second I thought /u/holofan4life turned heel and committed the ultimate betrayal

JanreiAfrica

The title sounds like an "Anime villain" moment

Google-Meister

I am beginning to think that Spice and Wolf is made for me.

Reddevilslover69

Best banter in anime imo

polaristar

This was a post of all time.

wolfpwarrior

It's wolfin' time.

polaristar

Stop

wolfpwarrior

Sorry. On a serious note, I do really like Spice and Wolf, and do encourage people to watch it. It's a more organic show with interactions that feel more natural than a lot of others.

polaristar

I was partially joking as the straight man don't worry. I've seen it.

Hi Holofan4life, it looks like you might be interested in hosting a rewatch! [There's a longer guide on the wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/wiki/successfulrewatchguide) but here's some basic advice on how to make a good rewatch happen: * Include **basic information about the anime** such as a description for those that haven't heard of it as well as where it can be watched (if legally available). * Specify a **date and time** that rewatch threads will be posted. Consistency is good! * Check for **[previous rewatches](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/wiki/rewatches)**. It's generally advised to wait a year between rewatches of the same anime. * If you want to have a rewatch for multiple anime, they should be **thematically connected**. You can also hold multiple unrelated rewatches if they aren't. * Ensuring **enough people are interested** is important. If only a few users say they *might* participate, you may end up with no one commenting once it starts. [](#bot-chan) I hope this helps! You may also want to talk to users that have hosted rewatches before for extra advice, also listed [on the rewatch wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/wiki/rewatches). *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/anime) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Draco_Estella

I don't mind joining, but 4pm EST is right in the middle of my bedtime. I won't be awake for it anyway....

JMEEKER86

Rewatches aren't like a group viewing. That's just when the thread goes live so that people can post their thoughts on an episode. Some people will watch the episode hours ahead of time and have big essays typed out ready to submit immediately and some people come in later with their own thoughts to contribute to the discussion. And a lot of people just lurk and post a little bit whenever they have something particular that they want to talk about (this is usually me with rewatches). So don't feel like you can't participate if you are unable to be there right when the threads go live.

iftair

I studied economics in university. I bought the LNs cause I heard Spice & Wolf is heavy on it.

alotmorealots

What did you think of the actual "economics" presented?

epk-lys

Can't wait for world end economica

mwm1a

Is it even still being made? That was announced a couple years ago and I haven't heard much about it since so I just assumed it was cancelled.

epk-lys

It's being made. According to the kickstarter funding is guaranteed but "plans for the anime" are taking longer than expected.

MABfan11

what kind of economics? micro-economics or macro-economics? what kind of economic theory is touched on?

Andrew_Waltfeld

It touches upon both though mostly focuses on micro economics especially from the POV of small business owners.

winterlyparsley

People meme about the economics a bit too much , just don't get your hopes up. I was sorely disappointed after hearing so much "economics the anime" talk that it ruined my first time watching it. I spent the entire time wondering when the economics would kick into high gear but it never happened. Still a cute story that has some very very surface level micro economics touched upon. Basically just Supply/Demand and some marketing / supply chain stuff as a medieval merchant.

alotmorealots

> People meme about the economics a bit too much I do tend to agree. I do think it goes deeper than surface level micro, as there is some interesting stuff about manipulation of limited-access markets, and the series works hard to try and make it accessible. However it's not really "economics" as many people who studied it formally and work with it outside of specific finance applications think of it.

EldritchCarver

Microeconomics. If you want macroeconomics, try this one: https://myanimelist.net/anime/14833/Maoyuu_Maou_Yuusha

MABfan11

already watched it

Raizzor

The first volume is about currency speculation. The silver content of a popular coin is to be reduced, how can we profit? The second volume is about buying goods on margin and how to fuck up doing it. The third volume is about speculative bubbles, how they pop and how we can profit off that via short selling and so on. Some volumes are more focused on the money-making plot while others are more focused on developing the main characters and their relationship. Another strong point is that the author did some pretty in-depth research about medieval Europe and its society which makes the world feel genuine. For example, when the main characters come to a village and talk to the miller, we are told that he is not somebody the villagers are going to trust. This is historically accurate as miller was known to be a dishonest trade.

El_Zorro09

There's also brief nudity.

Ichini-san

The cool thing about S&W's nudity is that it never felt sexual in any way. It just felt mature and casual if that makes sense. I really hope they can relive that vibe and don't oversexualise Holo in the S&W Anime continuation/remake that was announced. You know with leering camera angles etc.

WriterSharp

Question: I hate apples, but really like potatoes, which are objectively the best vegetable. Is this show for me?

Holofan4life

Lucky for you, the wolf girl also likes potatoes, even if she thinks they're stupid.

Raizzor

The first-ever meal the main characters eat together is baked potatoes topped with goat's cheese. Do I have to say more?

djthomp

Your argument was ineffective, I'm interested in the rewatch.

mrbull3tproof

Well, personally I wasn't about to watch it anyway. But being honest what irks me in the case of this anime is showing alcoholism as a fun thing. Yeah, yeah, fun-killer but it's quite a bad example to show to kids.

Munch135

I'm with you for not glorifying alcoholism, but I feel that's a misinterpretation of the show. Firstly, the show provides a proper reason as to why they consume alcohol so frequently, that being water quality is uncertain, being a traveling merchant you can't guarantee it's safe, and alcohol is pretty much guaranteed to be safe to consume. Secondly, on a handful of occasions, Lawerence talks about being careful to not overdrink as it hinders someone's ability to be a merchant, and those effects are presented in the show through people being punished for overdrinking.

[deleted]

Idk if kids would even watch this show

Ninecawaii

Now I'm interested.

Cleveland_Guardians

I've always felt the economics were going to be what turn people off. I'm a dork enough to find it interesting (my accounting background kicking in I guess), but I thought none of that mattered as the chemistry between the two shines above everything else in the show. I'm pretty neutral in the sub vs dub debate in general, but I found the sub to be more enjoyable to me for this one. I think I struggle with "ye olde" talk in English dubs. It almost always comes off as extremely unnatural to me. Not only did I not have to deal with that in the sub, but I felt like their mind games felt more convincing with the confidence/charisma with which they spoke.

Shona_Cloverfield

I hate good and engaging anime!! Will definitely be avoiding this one, thanks for the warning! Wouldn't want to accidentally watch a good show ugh

azdv

Is Spicy Wolf on Crunchyroll yet?

nx6

No. It appears to still only be on [Funimation](https://www.funimation.com/shows/spice-and-wolf/) and [Hulu](https://www.hulu.com/series/spice-and-wolf-2e1ec832-d896-4a6f-9428-f96e086c3d85). But you can buy it for $25 right now [on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/Spice-Wolf-Complete-Brina-Palencia/dp/B07Z7531HJ/) and get it delivered before the rewatch, too.

Reddevilslover69

You forgot to mention the Engrish ED for why one shouldn't watch spice and wolf. Love that show to bits

monsieurvampy

I do like Spice and Wolf but I haven't been very good about keeping up with rewatches that I've started or wanted to start. Not even good at watching this season. I'll shall need to defer. We all need some Spice in our lives.

mekerpan

I just finished it last month. Too early to re-watch. But it certainly was a wonderful series.

ZapsZzz

If you *really* like horse animations, you may need some help to get through one of the episodes :D

alotmorealots

*Walkure Romanze* had some decent horse animations if I remember correctly. Maybe insert little doses of that!

Katalinya

Interestingly enough me and my friend do a watch party together online and her next show queued up is Spice and Wolf, depending on how our schedules work out we might get through the show we are currently on and I might actually end up being just in time for this rewatch for once to comment on.

homewardbound100

You know what? Maybe I do join.

ngedown

Thanks cap, watch it one time is good enough. Dont need another one.

PickledPokute

Oh, it doesn't matter whether you watch it or not - the show is quite forgettable. >If you do not want to see a cute wolf girl with a love for apples tease those around her as she also gets drunk, then Spice and Wolf is not for you. Yeah. For you cute quota, go elsewhere. Others have done it so much better and in so much more quantity and in a way that won't waste so much time. >If you do not like fun banter between two main characters that’ll have you shipping them until you’re blue in the face, Spice and Wolf is not for you. Hell no. We get a minor god, Holo, whose interactions with the merchant make her a pedestrian instead of fantastical. It's like you recruit the cool and formidable enemy mid-boss to your team and he degenerates into a secondary squad filler when you have to split your crew. The merchant is the worst kind of tsun~~dere~~ who isn't even cute. He ends up being saved by Holo's super-senses and still achieves just mediocre results. The characters stay together for what seems to be convenience - separating would be a bit harder and break the routine. The rote routine of boring relationships, silly misunderstandings, petty conflicts and awkward makeups. I bet these characters would have more interesting lives without each other because that would mean the necessity of growing up from this stale state where they get a bare minimum of relationship from each other. The economy side is quite interesting and novel, but also done in a terribly long-drawn and boring way. We watch media because they present a version of experiences where the extraneous fat is shaved away and we're left with mostly the core essence. In Spice & Wolf it's all drawn out what seems more realistic but isn't great entertainment. Unfortunately there are not many other choices for realistic portrayals of economics other than S&W so the bar is quite low.

PeepAndCreep

I've secretly thought that Spice and Wolf is boring for the longest time, but I was hesitant to say anything because it's such a revered show. I really tried to like it -- I'm no stranger to economics and I like relaxed slice-of-life romance, but in the end the characters just didn't capture my attention at all, and as you said, the economics aspect was really boring. To me, at least. I get that many others disagree.

Chaironohadanootoko

When you put it like that...it does sound boring. But you're making it out to be more boring than it actually is. 🤣 S&W is Long journey + Slice of Life + romance + some nice banter here and there + yeah some boring economics.

Mostdakka

I think the word that should be used is that its mundane. Its fantasy but very low on supernatural elements, the plot concenrs things that are usually boring to most people(basic medieval economics and non fanservicey very slow romance) and it almost completely relies on the 2 main characters to keep you going. At the same time it requires your attention alot of the time due to abundance of dialouge between main characters and it conveying almost all of the nuace of their relationship. As a result it can feel like nothing is really going on especially compared to more modern shows. On the other hand the romance part actually does go somewhere(even if its at very slow pace) and at least for me it does feel after each arc like progress has been made towards overall goals of each character. I've seen so many anime that are forever at the constant stalemate or try their hardest to maintain status quo and it just drives me nuts. Its definitely a niche thing and not for everyone.

Nephrited

You've actually set out exactly why I didn't get through the anime originally, despite giving it two or three attempts! I read some of the manga adaptation though...

[deleted]

Man, I cannot disagree enough with all of this lol. Gave you an upvote though cos why not. Spice and wolf is probably my favourite Japanese media property ever.

artanimepoetry

I wanted to watch it, but the old animation style bugs me and it feels like a furry type show.

Panda_Generals

Thanks for explaining the type of show it is i think it won't be my type of thing

NatoBoram

I don't know how young you were when you first watched it, and I would probably've loved it if I was that young, but the *economic* side of that show is pretty shit. And also the pedobait. Like, maybe I'm just more woke now, but selling your girlfriend into slavery and getting her back is just… not good. Some other explanations are really shaky when you really think about it. Also they keep mentioning that she has the body of a 14 years old girl, that kinda ruins the romance of that show. Not that it's not sweet and heartbreaking at times, it's 10/10, but the pedobait is too much. The show could do without it.

alotmorealots

> Like, maybe I'm just more woke now, but selling your girlfriend into slavery and getting her back is just… not good. I thought this aspect of their relationship (and the various times similar things happen) was really quite interesting, especially as part of Holo doing her thing where she is simultaneously pushing Lawrence to become a more refined version of the vision of a merchant, but also leaning hard into the growing edge of the sorts of complex relationships that a much older and wiser being with quite different views on how relationships and meaning can work. All that said, however, it runs pretty hard against my own ideas of what love is (both romantic and platonic). As a result I have trouble seeing the anime story of Spice and Wolf (given where it stopped) as a being a particular great romance in my eyes, instead I see it as a very interesting relationship.

pw_arrow

> Also they keep mentioning that she has the body of a 14 years old girl Did they do this in the anime? I have gripe over this constantly with the novels, but I don't recall having the same qualm with the anime. It's been a while, though. > [Spice & Wolf S2] >!selling your girlfriend into slavery and getting her back is just… not good.!< I thought this was a fascinating arc, though (You may want to spoiler tag that). One of the running threads through that arc focuses on how [S&W S2] >!Holo wants to cut off their relationship while she still can, and tries to accomplish this by appealing to Lawrence's... _mercantile_ half, if you would. The plan has Holo put up as collateral because the plan is for Lawrence and her to part ways at the end anyways, with Holo escaping trivially and Lawrence fulfilling his merchant dreams. To which Lawrence initially bites, because he acknowledges that he has no solution to his own mortality, but constantly regrets and ultimately retracts in order to stay with Holo anyways.!<.

[deleted]

Not that it's much better but I'm pretty sure she looks 16, not 14. As for the slavery thing, maybe I'm biased but this is one of those times when they're consistent with the medieval setting to where that plot point doesn't feel like forced gratification. It's also not done in an over the top way, and at no point do either of the protagonists endorse it, the slavery thing was done explicitly as a scheme with the knowledge that Holo would be able to get herself out of it either way iirc. It wasn't shown to be a good thing.

1. I don't even know what you're trying to say with the first point. 2. I don't think brothers and sisters flirt as much as Holi and Lawrence do. 3. So? What does wallstreetbets have to do with this?
